Overview
########

Staraptor is one of the strongest wallbreakers in the OU metagame, boasting a solid base 120 Attack and a decent base 100 Speed backed up by a great ability in Reckless and a movepool that contains all the tools it needs to dismantle defensive cores. In addition to this, it can run Choice items effectively to either function as a powerful wallbreaker or a great revenge killer. However, Staraptor's dependency on recoil moves wears it down quickly, and its below average defenses means that it cannot take many hits before going down. Staraptor's common weaknesses and the ubiquity of Stealth Rock means that it also has limited switch-in opportunities.

Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double-Edge
move 3: Final Gambit / Close Combat / Quick Attack
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Band
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Adamant / Jolly

Moves
========

Brave Bird and Double-Edge are Staraptor's strongest STAB attacks, chunking even Pokemon which resist them. The third moveslot contains the surprise factor of this set. Final Gambit is usually the best option, allowing Staraptor to sacrifice itself to chunk would-be counters such as Skarmory, and let a teammate clean up afterwards. Close Combat allows Staraptor to handle Tyranitar as well as other Rock- and Steel-types, whereas Quick Attack lets it pick off a weakened enemy. U-turn is used in the final slot to gain momentum and capitalize on the switches that Staraptor forces.

Set Details
========

This set makes the most of Staraptor's offensive capabilities, using maximum investment in Attack and Speed to hit hard and fast. A Choice Band dramatically increases Staraptor's damage output, allowing it to break past some otherwise good checks such as Heatran. Reckless is used to boost the power of Staraptor's STAB moves. An Adamant nature is recommended for the chance to OHKO Rotom-W and the extra power in general, but a Jolly nature can be used to Speed tie with other base 100s such as Mega Gardevoir and Mega Medicham.

Usage Tips
========

Staraptor works best when brought in unscathed, allowing it to chunk whatever comes in. Close Combat, if elected, should only be used when absolutely necessary, as it allows common sweepers, such as Mega Pinsir and Gyarados, to set up for free. Staraptor should also be used early-game to punch holes in the opponent's team and pave the way for a mid- to late-game sweep by teammates.

Team Options
========

Mega Pinsir and Talonflame form a great offensive 'birdspam' core, weakening each other's checks and counters. Any Pokemon that appreciates walls removed works well with Staraptor, as it performs its wallbreaking duties very well. Entry hazard setters, such as Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Ferrothorn, as well as removers, such as Latios and Starmie, also pair well with Staraptor, allowing it to wallbreak and switch in more easily, respectively. Magnezone also pairs well with Staraptor, trapping Skarmory and offensive checks such as Mega Scizor.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double-Edge
move 3: Close Combat / Final Gambit
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========

This set works similarly to the Choice Band set, utilizing its STAB combination to revenge kill a multitude of threats in the tier. Close Combat is used to revenge kill Mega Tyranitar and Mega Gyarados at +1, but Final Gambit can be used to quickly dent a wall. U-turn is used to gain momentum on forced switches.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Attack and Speed allow Staraptor to revenge kill very effectively. An Jolly nature is recommended to outspeed as many threats as possible, although an Adamant nature can be used for more power; it notably has the chance to OHKO Terrakion and 2HKO Choice Scarf Landorus-T. A Choice Scarf is used to boost Staraptor's Speed and allow it to revenge kill faster threats. Reckless is used to boost the power of Staraptor's STAB moves.

Usage Tips
========

Staraptor still works well with Talonflame and Mega Pinsir in a 'birdspam' offensive core to break down each other's checks. U-turn is great to use early-game to get advantageous matchups and chip damage on some opponents. Staraptor is a neat revenge killer, due to its high-powered Reckless-boosted moves which allow it to take out many threats with minimal prior damage. This set is primarily used as a revenge killer, but it can also act as a late-game cleaner or a lead to punch holes early-game, especially against defensive teams.

Team Options
========

Entry hazard removers, such as Latios and Starmie, are crucial to allow Staraptor to switch in more often and revenge kill opponents. Rotom-W, Celebi, and Keldeo are great partners to handle Staraptor's checks such as Rhyperior, Mega Aerodactyl, and Skarmory.

Other Options
########

A SubRoost Life Orb set can be used to take advantage of all the switches Staraptor forces, mitigating recoil damage and the HP lost from Substitute. Tailwind is also a feasible option to use on this set.

Checks & Counters
########

**Skarmory**: Skarmory avoids the 2HKO from all of Staraptor's moves, although switching in with Stealth Rock on the field is somewhat risky. However, Skarmory must be wary of Final Gambit.

**Faster Pokemon**: If Staraptor is not running Choice Scarf, anything faster can usually dent or outright KO it, due to its general fragility.

**Recoil and Residual Damage**: Staraptor's use of recoil moves means that it's worn down extremely quickly, and if combined with damage from Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs and Garchomp's Rough Skin, it can cause Staraptor to faint prematurely.

**Dedicated Physical Walls**: Pokemon such as Doublade, Rhyperior, Jirachi, and Magnezone can wall Staraptor most of the time, although all of them except for Doublade must be wary of Final Gambit. Depending on what move Staraptor is Choice-locked into, certain Pokemon, such as Rotom-W, Zapdos, and Landorus-T, can also switch in relatively well.

Overview
########
- reckless + STAB brave bird and double-edge demolishes so many things
- close combat breaks steel- and rock-types which wall its STAB moves
- base 120 Attack and base 100 Speed is pretty good for an offensive mon
- dual bird core with talonflame shreds a lot of stuff and flying spam is very good
- relatively frail, common weaknesses, not exactly a good typing, even struggles to take resisted hits
- SR weakness means it can't switch in as often as it'd like to
- recoil causes it to faint pretty quickly

Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double Edge
move 3: Final Gambit / Close Combat / Quick Attack
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Band
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Adamant / Jolly

Moves
========
- destroy stuff with dual stabs
- u-turn to run away
- final gambit to chunk something real hard if you have hp to spare, and doesn't hand the opponent any momentum. also seriously screws with all hard counters, and can even open up paths for teammates to clean up
- cc is garb move to be locked into, but dents things like ttar, magnezone, and heatran
- quick attack for priority

Set Details
========
- max speed and attack EVs to hit stuff hard and fast
- reckless because double-edge and brave bird
- choice band because double-edge and brave bird
- adamant because the power, but a jolly nature can be used to speed tie with other base 100s such as megacham, megazard x + y, and megagarde

Usage Tips
========
- obliterate things with stabs before falling
- only use cc on things like ttar if you must, since it gives free setup to things like pinsir and gyarados
- can't switch in much due to frailty + SR weakness
- use early-game to punch holes and clear the way for a potential mid- to late-game sweep

Team Options
========
- mega pinsir / tflame because dual flying core really does work; weaken each other's checks and counters
- anything that needs walls to die, because staraptor does that well
- hazard setters like garchomp, lando-t, and ferrothorn to turn a few 2hkos into ohkos
- hazard removers like the lati twins and starmie so SR doesn't cut into survivability
- scarfzone forms a voltturn core with raptor, and traps steel-types such as skarmory and checks most of raptor's offensive checks such as megazor

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double Edge
move 3: Close Combat / Final Gambit
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========
- destroy stuff with dual stabs
- destroy other stuff with cc
- scout with u-turn
- final gambit to chunk something if needed

Set Details
========
- max speed and attack EVs to hit stuff hard and fast
- reckless because double-edge and brave bird
- choice scarf to outspeed a lot of stuff and hit em real good
- jolly because base 100 is a pretty crowded speed tier and there are even common scarfers at 100
- adamant can be used for a higher chance to OHKO Pokemon such as terrakion and notably the chance to 2HKO scarfed landorus-t

Usage Tips
========
- u-turn to scout if needed early-game
- makes a really good revenge killer for things like +1 mega gyarados and megatar
- best used as a revenge killer or a late-game cleaner, due to its excellent speed + power, but it can also be used as a lead with final gambit, especially against defensive teams

Team Options
========
- band tflame and scarf raptor make really good late-game cleaners, pooping on each other's checks
- hazard removers, since SR limits switch-ins
- rotom-w, celebi, and keldeo make great partners, as they are able to handle most of raptor's checks such as skarmory, rhyperior, megazor, megadactyl, and ttar

Other Options
########
- LO + SubRoost
- tailwind on LO sets

Checks & Counters
########
- skarmory can stall with roost and isn't 2hko'd by any of staraptor's moves, meaning it can switch in
- anything faster can dent staraptor because it's pretty frail
- rocky helmet, iron barbs, and rough skin can rack up along with the recoil from dual stabs if locked into the wrong move, so it's worn down pretty easily
- most dedicated physical walls which resist staraptor's moves can force it out such as rhyperior, megadactyl, jirachi, doublade, lando-t, and magnezone, although they must be wary of cc and final gambit
- pokemon which can take advantage of raptor being locked into a move such as zapdos, scarf magnezone, and rotom-w can also force it out

final gambit slashes should be moved to cc. cc is the least important move, tran is already fucked up, tar doesn't like taking u-turns, there's your cc targets...while final gambit is actually useful to weaken skarm and stuff. think its the best option in that slot tbh. u-turn is a very important 'safe' and momentum-gaining move on staraptor, and shouldn't be forgone imo. can also slash qa with cc.

I disagree that Close Combat should be slashed with anything. Final Gambit is nice if you have a good match up on turn 1 or if you manage to preserve Raptor's health, but that is not always the case. Because of this, you want CC to make sure that only Skarmory will be able to wall you if Staraptor doesn't manage to stay at full health.

Also, U-turn is not that good on a Pokemon that can 2HKO most of the metagame with just its STABs, including a ton of Pokemon that resist them. Even if the opponent has like Heatran + Rotom-W, Double Edge is still the best option as it does a ton to Heatran (45.1 - 53.2%) and OHKOes Rotom-W. Staraptor's STABs are so strong and spammable that there are very few cases where U-turn is the best option. If it were up to me, i would even slash it after Quick Attack, as CB Quick Attack is a very helpful revenge killing tool.

Finally, LO 3 attacks + Tailwind is a really cool set that prolly should be added. Still unwallable and able to punish the opponent for bringing in death fodders, while also easing prediction against teams with offensive checks such as Scarf Tyranitar, Thundurus, Raikou, and Mega Manectric.

Agreeing with Jukain about the slashes. U-turn is still really helpful because there are definitely cases when you'd rather use a switch-in as a setup opportunity rather than outright obliterate them, not to mention it's about as spammable as Brave Bird. I rarely finding myself using Close Combat or even wanting to use it - it's a really inadequate move to be locked into for the cost of hitting a few targets that are more than easily taken care of by U-turn. Final Gambit and Quick Attack will almost always be more useful in my opinion.

Unrelated to the above, but something that should be added to the overview: Staraptor relies (for the most part) on recoil moves, so it really isn't going to last long.

on which set?
I usually find myself using bb / doubleedge / cc / uturn, on the few times I tried gambit or quick attack over uturn, I rarely found myself actually using them

On the Band set, I think Adamant deserves a slash. It allows Raptor to have a 68.8% chance to OHKo Rotom w with Double Edge after rocks (81.3% chance against 252 hp / 212 def variants). It also OHKOes a lot more things if they have taken prior damage than Jolly can. I know he sits in a crowded base 100 speed tier, but some mons like char y opt for modest and don't even run full speed, so I don't think raptor will miss the speed that much.

oh adamant > jolly on band for sure, you barely miss the speed and it's so strong... for example the chance to ohko rotom-w and

252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 174-205 (45.1 - 53.2%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

obv there's protect and stuff but that's pretty big. this is why i say you can run gambit over cc .-. cc hits two pokemon, and yes it's useful on a pokemon that can 2hko most of the tier...often you want a pivot move to get out of different situations safely, to maintain the offensive momentum that's lost if they get to revenge kill staraptor, as an easy out in situations where the opponent actually has a good raptor answer (basically skarmory), and to ease prediction. tyranitar takes about half from cb u-turn anyways, and heatran is 2hkoed by cb bb/edge. why do i need cc if i can just do that. meanwhile, final gambit actually lets you almost bring down skarmory instead of just getting walled by it, providing an excellent support for other pokemon that you would pair staraptor with. cc just feels really superfluous on raptor, and it's a garbage lock. you don't want garbage locks, bb and double-edge are good locks, u-turn is naturally a fine lock, final gambit you would use to weaken some wall... cc is easy as hell to take advantage of, making staraptor setup fodder for foes such as gyarados, charizard, and pinsir. idk how it stops you from being walled by skarmory because practically every skarm carries counter because it's needed for pinsir now, so don't see how raptor is beating it ?_? qa can slashed in that slot as well, i just don't think cc is very good.

cc should prob get the first slash on scarf for mega ttar and evo'd gyarados, though.

Echoing above point by clone
Adamant also gets:
2HKO w/ BB on 248/0 tran after sr/lefties when jolly only has 10.5%,
2HKO on Max def Lando again with BB after sr/lefties (jolly has a 90% and its not hard to wear down slightly but still)
36.3% to 2HKO 252/212+ tom-w with BB after sr/lefties with jolly has no chance of.
31.3% chance to ohko mandibuzz after sr, jolly has none
43.8% to ohko 248/0 M zor after sr, jolly has none
2HKO on zapdos after sr w/ bb, jolly has a 58.2%
56.3% to ohko max def clefable, jolly has a 6.3%

All these make bb way more spamable

edit gdi jukain. all that effort into a argument and you ninja me and just agree with me and make the point redundant

I agree close combat is not really necessary on Staraptor, and from the calcs ive seen stuff like ttar wouldnt want to switch in on Staraptor anyway, plus close combat leaves it pursuit-prone from Scizor and stuff like that.

Overview

- Mention recoil as one of Staraptor's cons, because its frailty + recoil + SR weakness make it a glass canon.

Choice Band

Moves

- You have no description for Double-Edge
- Explain that Final Gambit foils hard counters such as Skarmory, Mega Aerodactyl, and Rhyperior, and eases prediction in case the opponent has multiple checks and counters to Staraptor
- Include more targets of Close Combat, such as Magnezone, Heatran, and Rhyperior

Set Details

- Mention a Jolly nature somewhere. It helps Staraptor a lot against offensive teams, where the extra power is hardy noticeable but the added Speed helps against base 100s, such as Mega Char Y, Mega Char X, Mega Gardevoir, and Mega Medicham.

Usage Tips

- Mention that Staraptor should preferably be sent out early-game, to punch holes and prepare mid and end-game sweeps
- Elaborate on your last bullet when writing it up, it's very vague and says nothing meaningless as it is now

Team Options

- Remove Excadrill as an SR setter, it's not a good one. Instead, mention Pokemon such as Garchomp and Landorus-T, which fit nicely on offensive teams
- Not sure about Mandibuzz, i don't think it fits well on the offensive teams that Staraptor likes to be in. Latios, Latias, and Starmie are all better options
- Mention Scarf Magnezone, which formes a Volt-turn core with Staraptor, and traps Steel-types, especially Skarmory, easiny prediction and making wallbreaking easier, as well as checking many offensive Pokemon that Staraptor has troubles with

Choice Scarf

Moves

- Elaborate on what each moves does when writing this up

Set Details

- max hp and attack EVs to hit stuff hard and fast
Fix this, you meant Atk and Spe.
- Slash an Adamant nature after Jolly, and mention some relevant OHKO / 2HKOes you get with Adamant

Usage Tips

You just say the same things you said under moves here, which is not the purpose of this section. Mention how this set shoould be played (lead, wallbreaker, revenge killer, and at which stage of the game should it be used?). Also, explain that Scarf Final Gambit is often a great way to start the game if you know you can get a kill with it, especially against defensive teams

Team Options

- tailwind
Why? Staraptor is already pretty damn fast, so no need for Tailwind. Instead, mention Pokemon able to handle Staraptor's checks and counters, such as Skarmory, Rhyperior, Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Scizor, and Tyranitar. Rotom-W is an excellent partner for this reason, and so is Celebi and Keldeo

Other Options

- Add a mention of SubRoost + LO, or 3 attacks + Roost. Also, mention Tailwind for LO sets.

Checks and Counters

- Rhyperior, Rotom-W, Heatran, Landorus-T, defensive Mega Scizor, Mega Aerodactyl, Magnezone, especially Scarf, Zapdos, Jirachi, and Doublade. Your checks and counters are seriously lacking in content, so include all those Pokemon and explain how they deal with each Staraptor set

did the changes alexwolf

some of the checks are shaky, but i just made a point about raptor being locked into the wrong move, since double edge dents or even has a chance to ohko some would-be checks such as zapdos and rotom-w. spdf tran also takes nearly half from the band set on any of its stab moves

iirc, Final Gambit doesn't affect Ghosts like Doublade, so you should change that.

Also, there's a hyphen in Double-Edge;)

Final Gambit is usually the best option, allowing Staraptor to sacrifice itself to chunk would-be counters, such as Skarmory, and let a teammate clean up afterwards. Close Combat allows Staraptor to handle Tyranitar, as well as other Rock- and Steel-types, whereas Quick Attack lets it pick off a weakened enemy. U-turn is used in the final slot to gain momentum and capitalize on the switches that Staraptor forces.

Set Details
========

This set makes the most of Staraptor's offensive capabilities, using maximum investment in Attack and Speed to hit hard and fast. A Choice Band dramatically increases Staraptor's damage output, allowing it to break past some otherwise good checks to it, such as Heatran. Reckless is used to boost the power of Staraptor's STAB moves. An Adamant nature is recommended for the chance to OHKO Rotom-W and the extra power in general, but a Jolly nature can be used to Speed tie with other Pokemon with base 100s Speed, such as Mega Gardevoir and Mega Medicham.

Usage Tips
========

Staraptor works best when brought in unscathed, allowing it to chunk whatever comes in. Close Combat, if electedchosen, should only be used when absolutely necessary, as it allows common sweepers, such as Mega Pinsir and Gyarados, to set up for free. Staraptor should also be used early-game to punch holes in the opponent's team and pave the way for a mid- to late-game sweep by teammates.

Team Options
========

Magnezone also pairs well with Staraptor, trapping Skarmory and offensive checks, such as Mega Scizor.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double-Edge
move 3: Close Combat / Final Gambit
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========

This set works similarly to the Choice Band set, utilizing its STAB combination to revenge kill a multitude of threats in the tier. Close Combat is used to revenge kill Mega Tyranitar and Mega Gyarados at +1, but Final Gambit can be used to quickly dent a wall. U-turn is used to gain momentum onff forced switches.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Staraptor still works well with Talonflame and Mega Pinsir in a 'birdspam' offensive core to break down each other's checks. U-turn is great to use early-game to get advantageous matchups and chipinflict some damage on some opponents. Staraptor is a neat revenge killer, due to its high-powered Reckless-boosted moves, which allow it to take out many threats with minimal prior damage. This set is primarily used as a revenge killer, but it can also act as a late-game cleaner or a lead to punch holes early-game, especially against defensive teams.

Team Options
========

Entry hazard removers, such as Latios and Starmie, are crucial soto allow Staraptor can afford to switch in more often and revenge kill opponents. Rotom-W, Celebi, and Keldeo are great partners to handle Staraptor's checks, such as Rhyperior, Mega Aerodactyl, and Skarmory.

However, Skarmory must also be wary of Final Gambit.

**Faster Pokemon**: If Staraptor is not running a Choice Scarf, anything faster can usually dent or outright KO it, due to its general fragility.

**Recoil and Residual Damage**: Staraptor's use of recoil moves means that it's worn down extremely quickly, and if combined with damage from Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs and Garchomp's Rough Skin, it can cause Staraptor to faintmake itself faint prematurely.

I can see the writer of this analysis hasn't implemented some changes in my check aboce. Perhaps he didn't agree with them? I thought you were supposed to indicate which, if any, changes you didn't implement. Anyways, using "base 100s" over "Pokemon with base 100 Speed" is correct. "Elect" also means to choose, so I don't see a reason to change that. "Chip damage" is a pretty accepted term, but your change for that is fine.

Changing this
However, Skarmory must also be wary of Final Gambit.
is kind of unnecessary in my opinion because there isn't anything else Skarmory should necessarily be wary of (Stealth Rock is only slightly risky) or any other Pokemon listed in the analysis that should be wary of Final Gambit. Again, I don't really see a reason to change the sentence because it works perfectly fine, but if you disagree with me, feel free to bring it up. :)

Other than that, nice check, Firebird03. I'm stamping this check with the changes/notes above for GP 2/2.
