Arena: Definitely-Not-A-Gym Mine.
Format: Singles.
Complexity: Medium.
Field Type: Steel.
Restrictions: Sun needs a Heat Rock to be summoned.

“Don’t be shy, come in!”

The young trainer said, his words directed at you. It was hard to think that he was a Gym Leader: easy-going, talkative, and apparently very fond of chocolate. You could see he had 3 or 4 bars of it in his jacket’s pockets, with the possibility of more being found in his pants.

The corridor you were walking through got deeper and deeper into a mountain; apparently a random one, since you couldn’t recall hearing it named in any particular way. It looked like a normal mine, the only thing particularly different being a sign reading “No Avnomkes Allowed” in the entrance.

The path was very straightforward: there were some forks in the way, but you continued walking in a straight line.

After about 10 minutes of walk, you arrived at a large room. Two large, glowing stones in the north and south walls quickly caught your attention: the first one with a bright pink light; and the second one with a light green tone.

“I know, impressive. Those two beauties took quite some work to get here. The Gym Committee wasn’t very fond of the idea, but I managed to convince them to fund their transportation.”

Forcing yourself to look away from the stones, you take a glance at the rest of the room. Numerous steel pillars of various sizes erected from the floor, which consisted mostly of dirt; some were even high enough to reach the ceiling.

The top of the room reached around 15 meters of height. You could distinguish the sparkling of something metallic up there, as well as some things that looked like magnets in the walls and the floor.

And finally, in the center of the room, the drawings of a Pokémon Arena could be seen. When you looked that way, you saw that the young man was already waiting.

You hurry up towards your spot, and once you got there you hear him talk.

“Alright, time to test your skills. I will not go easy on you, so I recommend that you don’t either.”

Then, from the ceiling, water started to fall like a downpour. After seeing your surprised face, the leader just said: “We don’t like fires much around here.”

After that short explanation, the battle started.

Summary:

- Default weather is Light Rain (+1 / -1 to Water / Fire Attacks). Any changes in weather will revert back to Light Rain once the effect of the move/ability ends.
Light Rain does not have any of the side effects of rain (100% acc Thunder and Hurricane, activating abilities, weak Solar Beam, etc.).

- Sun needs a Heat Rock to be summoned, and even then only lasts 4 rounds.

- The giant pink stone powers up Fairy-type moves by 2 BAP.

- The giant Leaf Stone gives every Pokémon in the field the ability to use the move Energy Ball.

- The magnets also allow Steel Pokémon to manipulate their weight, changing it anywhere from 2 WC lower and 2 WC higher than their original one while ordering first.

Codifications:
- Camouflage makes the user Steel Type.
- Natural Cure calls Gear Grind.
- Secret Power has a 30% chance to paralyze.

Welcome to the brand new Steel-type Gym! This position was previously held by C$FP and Complications, two formidable battlers. But now, hotshot tavok has risen to the challenge! Overall, he's a solid ASB trainer with a good variety of Pokemon. Lately, he's shifted towards raising some strong Steel-type Pokemon, just in time for qualifiers. His gym seems pretty balanced, but that weight malleability might play a huge role in racking up damage. I think tavok made a huge mistake here in not allowing any Mega Evolutions; Mawile, Steelix, Lucario, and Aggron are some of the best megas in the game... That being said, his Lucario will probably pull weight with its super effective Fighting-type STAB.

In the other corner, we have Eternal Drifter. While not as renowned for his battling skill, he can be a tough opponent when needed. I think he'll bring us a good match, personally! He is quite the storyteller; it will be interesting to see how this battle forms its way into his episodes. All of his Pokemon are going to need to put in extra work to pull off a win here. Zoroark is awesome for a lot of reasons and can devastate tavok's heavy hitters if allowed. Smeargle is a complete grab bag, where anything could happen if substitutions are not properly managed. Delphox rounds out the crew well by providing a key resistance to Lucario with its Psychic-type.

Best of luck to both!

Mirra (Mawile (F))
Nature: Careful (+SpD, -SpA)

Type:

- Steel: Steel STAB; immune to Sandstorm damage, immune to Poison/Toxic status, but can be corroded specifically by Acid and Acid Spray, making them susceptible to Poison-type attacks and Poison/Toxic Status.

- Fairy: Fairy STAB: -1 EN on non-Fairy typed Nature, Sound, and Scent moves (Stacks with second STAB where applicable). (Nature Power, Natural Gift; Sound Moves; Aromatherapy, Odor Sleuth, Sweet Scent)

Abilities:

- Hyper Cutter (Passive): This Pokemon always keeps its claws/teeth/pincers extremely sharp, and thus cannot have its attack reduced.

- Intimidate (Trigger): When this Pokemon initially goes out into the battlefield, it generates an intimidating roar or war cry that shakes all opponents on the battlefield, reducing their Attack stage by one (1). The attack drop is maintained at the end of each round. If an opponent switches in a new Pokemon, Intimidate can be activated again as a Command, and will affect all opponents.

Command: Activate Intimidate - 5 En - Lowers all foes' Attack by one (1) stage. Only usable if a foe entered play this round.

- Sheer Foce (Toggle) (UNLOCKED): At default this Pokemon can energize all its attacks with a secondary effect (These are damaging moves that either lower the target's stats, raise the user's stats, or inflict a status condition on the target). The Base Attack Power of every move with a secondary effect increases by two (2), but they will never have their usual secondary effect. When toggled, no effect.

The Base Attack Power of every move with a secondary effect increases by two (2), but they will never have their usual secondary effect. When toggled, no effect.

- Huge Power (Passive) (MEGA): This Pokemon has immense inner strength that grows with its development, raising its Attack and its Base Rank Total by one Rank for each evolution level (first of three stages = 1, first of two stages or second of three stages = 2, fully evolved = 3). Not much going on this first round, to be frank. Smeargle takes evasive action, but Lucario manages to trap it with Rock Tomb. Focus Blast does quite a bit of damage (five less than when mega evolved though...), which brings Smeargle down to a dangerous range. You gotta wonder if Eternal Drifter has something in mind with Sketching Focus Blast on A3; perhaps he'll hit some super effective damage here? Regardless, he's has the challenge of busting a move while ordering first.

I really don't think Rock Tomb actually "traps" opposing Pokémon. I believe that is more of a Flavor description that anything, since it is lacking the "preventing them from being switched out during Switch Phases" that partial trapping and trapping moves have.

PD: And no, I'm not getting Megas soon.

tavok decides to leave his Lucario in for a chance to order second. An interesting choice, considering how much damage Delphox can rail on it! The gambit pays off though, as Eternal Drifter forgets a crucial substitution for damaging evasive moves. But even when ordering second, Lucario struggles to win the damage race, as a single Fire Blast does close to 30 damage. Let's see if tavok cashes in on a switch phase, and how our challenger will respond.

Action 1:
Delphox used Fire Blast!

Mind you, I stayed in for the chance of that being a Zoroark. Also, the light rain should have reduced Fire Blast's power by 1, so Bastion gets a little hp back.

Hrm. Eternal Drifter makes a gutsy move and orders Zoroark to steal Empoleon's Rare Candy. While a great idea in theory, people will go to crazy lengths to keep their item. tavok is forced to utilize a wonky combo, but did it pay off? The challenger gets extremely fortunate thanks to the RNG; Dark Pulse snags a flinch, while Focus Blast drops Empoleon's Special Defense. Still, Empoleon pulls off a Roar, bringing out Delphox for next round. How will the Gym Leader respond to this unpredictable turn of events?
