Summer Freedom Round 2 Pairings

The first round was a fiasco. It stretched on for a very long period of time, for which I take full responsibility. Despite that, an astonishing number of battles were not completed. I have learned from my mistakes, and rest assured that next year’s starting format will be entirely different: 64 people max, with me getting to decide who gets to play and who does not.

Many of the entrants in the SF have been inactive. So many people, in fact, that the concept and process of double elimination has become untenable. As such, I have chosen to remove double elimination from the rest of this year’s tournament. I am sorry to all those who played, yet lost, their first round matches.

The rest of the tournament will be done on a strict deadline schedule. The deadline for this round is just over a week from today: Saturday, July 15th, at 6 PM EST. If you battle your opponent before that time, you do not need to show up to the cutoff. If you have not battled by 6 PM on Saturday, you must be on the netbattle server at the cutoff. Whichever person shows up to the cutoff receives the win. If both people show, they battle. If neither person shows, I pick randomly. I would like to trust you guys to complete your battles, but that seems to be a bad idea.

It's totally uncool to lose the first round "not caring" too much, as we could still have a chance to continue at the tourney, and then know that is already disqualified. But if there weren't any other option to choose, it's ok.

Also it seems "kinda" gay to me that the people who got their battles in and lost are totally DQed from this while people like natalie (said she quit) and Explodus (vanished) made round 2.

I don't see any other way of handling it really. This is far from optimal, I agree. However, a ridiculous amount of the loser's bracket would be inactive. As it is, there are a couple people in the winner's bracket who are still inactive, but thankfully they will be removed after one round. If a large number of inactives were placed in the loser's bracket, they could clog up the tournament for many more rounds.

I'm very sorry to the people who lost in the first round. If instead of complaining somebody could come up with a feasible solution, that would be lovely.

I don't think you should keep any inactives in the tournament: I think you should substitute inactives for people who lost first round but did get their battles in.

Also, what happens if I try to get my battle done, PM and try to set-up times and stuff but my opponent doesn't respond but does show up at the cut-off which is at 2AM for me?

(this is not the situation at all but more of a "what if" question)
