Swampert [QC: 0/3]

Overview
########

  • Mega Evolution got introduced with ORAS
  • Now has Swift Swim, making it a great rain bulky sweeper
  • Amazing Attack stat, even better under rain
  • Great bulk, making it less susceptible to priority and the like
  • Great offensive typing and defensive typing
  • Has Ice Punch for coverage
  • Rain sweeper that can't be cut short of Thundurus's Thunder Wave, that's huge
  • Slow outside of rain
  • Easily worn down
  • Can't hold a Life Orb like other rain sweepers, which means moves other than Waterfall under rain will be somewhat underwhelming in damage
  • Overall the best asset rain teams have bar Politoed

Swift Swim
########
name: Swift Swim
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Ice Punch
move 4: Low Kick
ability: Torrent
item: Swampertite
evs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

  • Waterfall is a STAB attack, and deals huge damage in rain
  • Earthquake is a secondary STAB attack
  • Ice Punch hits weakened Grass-types for good damage
  • Albeit rarely used, Low Kick lets you hit Ferrothorn and Mega Gyarados
  • Rain Dance allows for manual rain if needed

Set Details
========

  • Torrent is the ability before you mega evolve, but it then turns into Swift Swim which doubles your Speed in rain
  • Swampertite lets you mega evolve
  • 252 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature maximize attack
  • 152 Speed EVs let you outspeed Timid Mega Sceptile under rain
  • 104 HP are for bulk

Usage Tips
========

  • Bring Swampert immediately after rain has been set, because 8 turns is somewhat short and you can't waste any time
  • Swampert should sweep late-game when its checks/counters are weakened as well as other Pokemon so it can sweep undisturbed
  • Avoid burns and status under all circumstances they wear you down and the former cuts your attack in half.
  • Very simple to use, set up rain and switch out immediately, while doing this late-game.

Team Options
========

  • The best teammate you could ever pair Swampert up with is Politoed. It sets up rain and activates Swift Swim, and it's a staple on any rain team. Furthermore, it can cripple opposing Ferrothorn and Pokemon that threaten Mega Swampert with Encore
  • Tornadus is also a good partner. It takes advantage of rain with Hurricane, can set up its own rain, and U-turn into Swampert.
  • Partners who also enjoy rain such as Kingdra are good partners, and they form rain offensive cores
  • Ferrothorn makes for a great partner because it counters all of Swampert's checks, and appreciates Fire-type attacks being weakened in rain, as well as set up hazards
  • Hazard support is great for netting more KOs
  • Magnezone traps and KOs Swampert's checks before rain is set

Other Options
########

  • Mega Swampert can run a non-rain offense set, and can run Stealth Rock and 3 Attacks to function more as a tank. However, no recovery greatly takes away from this set
  • Curse is an option, but being slow is bad in the metagame and special attackers are very prevalent, as well as setting up being hard.
  • Power-Up-Punch, while gimmicky, can be used to up Attack and sweep even better.
  • Superpower lets you hit weakened Rotom-W hard enough to ko it
  • Roar stops sweepers in their tracks

Checks & Counters
########

**Grass-types**: Because Swampert will won't OHKO most Grass-type opponents with Ice Punch, Grass-types are the easiest answer to Mega Swampert, granted that they aren't weakened. Ferrothorn in particular stands out as a good answer to Mega Swampert, as it can take any attack from Swampert, including Low Kick, and OHKO back with Power Whip. Mega Venusaur also is a great answer to Mega Swampert, as it can take any attack as well, and regain its health back with Giga Drain.

**Physical Walls*: Mega Swampert's sheer power does not suffice in allowing it to break through physically bulky Pokemon. Pokemon such as Mega Slowbro and Suicune can easily set up or outlast Mega Swampert given they have recovery.

**Burns**: Like the nature of any physical attacker, burns easily hinder Mega Swampert's ability to deal much damage throughout the match, as it slowly wears it down, as well as slices its Attack stat in half, leaving it to deal laughable amounts of damage. Sableye is able to use Prankster Will-O-Wisp before it mega evolves, making it a problem as well.

**Weather changes**: Swampert heavily relies on rain to be very effective, so if the weather changes between Charizard Y's Sun or Tyranitar and Hippowdon's Sand Stream, Swampert will be heavily impacted.

**Rotom-W**: Rotom-W resists every move Mega Swampert has in its arsenal, and it takes next to nothing from Low Kick. In return, Rotom-W can easily burn Mega Swampert or hit it with Hydro Pump, which will most likely be boosted by rain.

I really don't like superpower tbh, it does (as you said) not much to rotom-wash and rotom-wash just burns you. Taking up a moveslot to lose to mon rly isnt all that great :/ OO I guess
Tagging Rob because he used SP over Low Kick on a rain team he posted recently, I'd like to hear his thoughts on it.

Worthlessnoob is right. As minor as it is, Damp > Torrent.

Just a thought about Checks & Counters. I think Celebi needs a specific mention under grass types, since it can switch into EQ/Low Kick/Waterfall with ease and only takes 42% max from Ice Punch. With Giga Drain, Recover, and even Natural Cure (screw Freeze hax) it's probably the most reliable Grass-type counter.
