Swinub

QC Approved [2/2]
(Darkamber8828, Heysup)
GP Approved [2/2] (elDino, NatGeo)

[Overview]

The Mamoswine evolution line has always been pretty cool, and Swinub is no exception to this. Swinub has a very unique Ground / Ice typing, giving it great offensive STAB, but a few undesirable weaknesses. With an exceptional movepool that boasts fantastic moves such as Earthquake and Icicle Crash, Swinub is easily capable of causing some good damage to the opponent's team. An acceptable Attack stat works well in conjunction with Swinub's movepool, meaning it has respectable sweeping capabilities, as well as the ability to revenge kill weakened Pokemon with STAB priority in the form of Ice Shard.

[SET]
name: Physical Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Icicle Crash
move 3: Ice Shard
move 4: Stealth Rock
item: Life Orb
ability: Snow Cloak
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set makes the best use of what Swinub has to offer. Earthquake gets STAB, and Swinub can spam it thanks to its great coverage and high base power. Icicle Crash pairs amazingly well with Earthquake, gets STAB, and combined with Earthquake it will complete the pair of attacks that Swinub most relies on. Ice Shard is great for picking off sweepers and any faster Pokemon that survives one of Swinub's first moves. Stealth Rock is on the set as Swinub can set it up easily, since Swinub causes many switches. Using Life Orb ties up the set by boosting Swinub's offensive prowess to sky high levels.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Snow Cloak is the preferred ability when using Swinub. As such, Snover pairs well with Swinub, as Swinub's Grass-type weakness is covered by Snover. Snover brings out the permanent hail that will kick Swinub's ability into use. Adamant is generally the preferred nature for the extra boost in attack power, although Jolly is a suitable alternative. Rock Slide can be used as a filler move, but it won't see much use otherwise. Icicle Spear can be used over Icicle Crash for the ability to break Substitutes and a chance at better damage.

[Other Options]

Superpower can be used by Swinub, but unfortunately it is illegal with Icicle Crash. Swinub has access to a variety of special attacks such as Ice Beam and Earth Power, but these do not work well due to its awful Special Attack stat. Icy Wind is gimmicky and can be used to catch a Swinub counter on the switch-in, rendering it slower than Swinub and at risk of being KOed on the next turn. Various support moves such as Reflect, Light Screen, Roar, and Toxic are also available to Swinub, though Swinub's poor defenses and defensive typing will make it hard to see effective use of them. A Choice Band or Choice Scarf can be used over Life Orb on the physical sweeper set.

[Checks and Counters]

Ferroseed can come into any move Swinub is using and threaten a OHKO with STAB Grass-type moves. Bronzor walls anything at Swinub's disposal. Fast Water-types can switch into Swinub and threaten it out with STAB Water-type moves, but it needs to be wary of switching directly into an Earthquake as it can take a lot of damage. Slowpoke can come into any move and Slack Off the damage while being able to threaten Swinub with Scald or Surf. Timburr and Meditite can both switch in, outspeed, and OHKO with Fighting-type STAB attacks. Wooper can take hits and Toxic stall Swinub away, as can Frillish.

I know this isn't finished, but I would honestly at the very least slash in Stealth Rock and Substitute before Rock Slide in the 4th slot, as Rock Slide is literally only useful to deal slightly more damage to Mantyke. Otherwise, it does absolutely nothing for Swinub. It can forces switches with its priority Ice Shard, and the most common Taunter, Gligar, would have to be insane to stay in against it.

Yeah I had Stealth Rock mentioned for use over Rock Slide in Additional Comments, but I wanted to wait and get some feedback first, I'll probably just slash it in if I don't hear any positive arguments for Rock slide.

It just has such redundant coverage with I think every single LC poke besides Mantyke.

Yes, do unslash Rock Slide, it does suck.

Swinub reaches 21 speed with a Scarf, has decent attack, and good coverage with its STABs. Scarf set could work.

DW section, I don't think Thick Fat is released. When it is, it's probably a better idea than Snow Cloak.

Mention Icicle Spear? It has a decent chance of doing more damage than Icicle Crash, breaks subs, and has more accuracy.

Curse is cool. It'd be a lot cooler with Thick Fat. Either way, fighting-weakness is very sad for Swinub.

Dokkora takes hits and Drain/Mach Punches. Meditite takes hits and Bullet/Drain Punches. Scarf Snover only really hates Rock Slide, and Giga Drains health back. Wooper takes hits and Waterfalls it to death. Slowpoke takes hits and Waters it to death. Pururiru takes hits and Waters it to death too.

Acknowledge and

The Mamoswine lineage has always been pretty cool, and Swinub is no exception. Swinub has a very unique typing consisting of Ground and Ice, giving it great offensive STAB, but someand less than undesirable weaknesses. With an exceptional movepool with staple moves likesuch as Earthquake and Icicle Crash, Swinub is easily capable of puttinginflicting quite a bit of damage ontoaround the opponent's team. Mediocre Speed and an acceptable Attack stat to go along with Swinub's movepool, it has respectable sweeping capabilities, as well as reliable revenge killing with STAB priority in the form of Ice Shard. Despite its mediocre Speed, Swinub is a respectable sweeper, as it has an acceptable Attack stat and an adequate movepool. It is also a reliable revenge killer because of Ice Shard, its STAB priority. [Just rephrasing the comments]

This set makes the best use of what Swinub has to offer. Earthquake gets STAB and is Swinub's mainprimary move to spam, as it has sporting great coverage and a sizable amount of damagebase power makes it the prime choice to use. Icicle Crash pairs amazingly well with Earthquake, and also gets STAB, which forms the core of Swinub's attacks. Ice Shard is very useful in picking off sweepers and any Pokemon faster than Swinub that survives one of Swinub's moves. Stealth Rock can be laid for the team quite easily when threatening a Pokemon to switch with Swinub. Swinub can easily set up Stealth Rock on the switch, as many Pokemon are threatened by its attacks. Life Orb ties it all up by kicking Swinub's offensive prowess to the maximum it can go whilest still being able to change it's moves without switching out.

Nice writeup, mostly nitpicking on my part though there were some things needed to help it flow.
