Project The Next Best Thing

Obvious Power is the winner, beating Fiend with a vote.

Next best thing is "deep in thought" Magby

Posting sets deadline: 28th September 4 PM EST

Magby @ Life Orb / Berry Juice
Ability: Flame Body
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 0 HP (if you're using Life Orb)
- Substitute
- Flare Blitz
- Focus Punch
- Thunder Punch

Self explanatory set: set up Sub when predicting a switch and Focus Punch will be guaranteed to hit unless the opponent is faster and is using a multi hit move, Flare Blitz is for STAB and hurts most of the metagame that doesn't resist it, Thunder Punch is for Water-types. Berry Juice can be used for recovery especially with Magby losing its HP because of Substitute and Flare Blitz, and Life Orb is another option for more power. Vital Spirit can't be used because it's a Hidden Ability and Focus Punch is a 4th gen TM.

- Thief

SubThief Magby, basically can annoy/wear down chinchou/slowpoke/ponyta or just steal something's evio and then smash them with flare blitz. cross chop hits chinchou harder as well as getting decent coverage, thunder punch hits other water types/archen so that can also be used. berry juice is obviously the best item for healing/thief purposes. rip murkrow

Magby @ Liechi Berry / Apicot Berry
Ability: Vital Spirit
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Natural Gift
- Flare Blitz
- Thief
- Mach Punch

Standard Belly Drum Magby is walled by pretty much any bulky mon that resists its STAB and is neutral to Mach Punch, aka most Bulky Water and Fire-types. A 100 BP Grass/Ground-type move in Natural Gift allows Magby to KO or heavily damage common switch-ins to Magby. Thief lets Magby steal Eviolite from Chinchou and Slowpoke after you hit them with Natural Gift (magby is too weak to KO them smh). In this scenario, the added bulk lets Magby tank a Scald from them, and KO them the next turn. Mach Punch is piss-weak priority, but is useful for hitting Pawniard and winning speed ties in a pinch.

New Meta (Magby) @ Eviolite
Ability: Flame Body
Level: 5
EVs: 220 Def / 36 SpA / 236 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Clear Smog
- Lava Plume
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

So basically, this thing is god. Lava Plume and Flame Body spread burns easily, and with the given spread paired with Eviolite, Magby is surprisingly bulky. Clear Smog can help prevent setup and works well in tandem with this set's burn-spreading ability. When paired with defensive Cleric Chinchou, the two form a nice core with good synergy (although they are weak to Drilbur rip)--Magby can switch in on Chinchou's dreaded Grass-type opponents, like Foongus and Ferroseed, while Chinchou can sponge hits from the things that trouble Magby and cure sleep with Heal Bell.
