The Next Best Thing
What is this?
I for one, along with many others I'm sure, feel as though there is some untapped power within the OU environment. There is substantial evidence for this idea in the form of one commonality for most tiers, OU included: There always seems to be one or more new-fangled, hyped up sets that weren't originally main-stay or seen as "viable" by the community, but somehow have taken the metagame by storm. This can be seen in DPP OU (with Special Lucario transitioning to SD Lucario, Heatran eventually running items other than Choice Scarf, and the influx of ChestoRest Kingdra), in ADV (with the vaunted TyraniBoah now becoming almost an urban myth in comparison to Special and DD Tyranitar, and the increasing popularity of Superachi), and in BW OU (with the advent of SubSalac Terrakion, SubDisable Gengar, and ChestoRest Volcarona). Yes, some of these sets may have been found early on with respect to the creation of the tier or fairly recently, the point is, though, that there seems to be an endless supply of effective and potent sets out there yet to be discovered, especially factoring in metagame swings and the possible tier shifts. The purpose of this project will be to systematically subject each and every OU pokemon to a collective body of research in an attempt to uncover these "hidden gems", so to speak, and hopefully spark some creativity throughout the OU community.
The Process:
Each week, I will choose a different OU Pokemon, sometimes chosen by random, sometimes chosen by curiousity, of which participants will try to personally create a new set for that is not already on-site or in the process of being put on-site. Participants will be given 5 days to create their set, with discussion about the particular sets being promoted throughout, and on the 6th and 7th day of the week, a vote will be held to choose which user's set represented the most creative and simultaneously competivitely viable set to utilize in the current OU metagame. Once the votes are tallied and a winner is crowned, the set will be archived in the OP and the process will start all over again for the next pokemon specimen.
What are we looking for?
Specifically, I want to stress the importance of the balance between creativity and viability when picking a set to post for the Pokemon in question. There's a very fine line between a "creative" set and a "gimmick", and this project is not meant to produce gimmicks, rather emphasize the ability to think outside the box when using a specific Pokemon in order to maximize it's potential. Having said that, I would also like to deviate from simple one move / item changes. For example, using Lum Berry over Life Orb on an SD Terrakion does nothing to show any untapped potential Terrakion has because we already have a basic understanding of what SD Terrakion is and does, it's just now better at dealing with status and has less power. The same goes for using Icy Wind over HP Flying on Keldeo, it doesn't yield productive discussion or results for the project. I am looking for sets that test what we think we know about checks or counters, so-called standards, and what it means to be viable. Maybe a particular option for a Pokemon looks inferior at first glance for that particular pokemon, but dig deeper and try and find what it might mean in the big picture.

That's about it, let's get started!

Firehusky went MIA, so I am the new showrunner of this topic for the time being! This project is always really fun, as it forces people to look past the standard "cookie-cutter" OU sets. To lead off we'll start with one of the most dangerous new threats in OU, Altaria!

Cotton Guard + DD Altaria is not innovation, sorry. You may now post!

Facade M-Altaria

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Atk / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Facade
- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Dragon Dance

Probably not optimized EVs but needed a starting ground anyways. Speed iirc correctly is to outpace Mega Lopunny and below after a Dragon Dance. Lets it function as a status absorber and benefit off of that (barring paralysis). Fire Blast is to lure in the natural M-Altaria switch ins M-Scizor and Ferrothorn. I mean there's not a whole lot to say other than Facade can be dangerous under the right conditions. Something to try out that you may see a bit more in the long run.

Gimmick

Electric potential
Parashuffler M-Altaria

Altaria-Mega @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine -> Pixilate
EVs: 248 HP / 164 Def / 96 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Slam
- Roar
- Roost
- Heal Bell / Substitute / Earthquake / Pursuit

M-Altaria has a fantastic defensive typing in this metagame and investing in physical defense makes it an excellent check to a lot of top tier threats like Keldeo, Latios, Charizard X, Mega Gyarados (bar Ice Fang variants), Rotom-W, and M-Sableye as well as some obscure offensive mons like Serperior and Victini. Anyone who played BW1 probably remembers the annoying af parashuffler Dragonite set, which definitely did its job really well; however, the addition of the Fairy typing in Gen 6 made it lose what merit it had at the time. This M-Alt set definitely doesn't spread paralysis as well as that Dragonite set did because it lacks Multiscale and a 100% chance to paralyze, but it has the ability to paralyze ground types like Landorus-T that like to switch in on physical variants. I decided Cloud Nine would be a preferred original ability if one chooses to use Heal Bell in the 4th slot so that it can switch into Charizard Y and Rain sweepers better. The nice thing about this set is that it's not completely passive as an uninvested Pixilate boosted Body Slam still does a really good amount of damage:

0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Body Slam vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Charizard X: 118-141 (39.7 - 47.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Body Slam vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 135-160 (46.2 - 54.7%) -- 63.7% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Body Slam vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 284-336 (87.9 - 104%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

The main idea obviously isn't to OHKO the things that it checks, but "lure" in checks like Scarf Heatran/Jirachi or defensive checks like Venusaur/Skarmory and potentially punish them for switching in. Roar is nice because if you get lucky and bring in something that Altaria naturally checks, you can potentially get more chances to Body Slam Para their switch ins, much like Parashuffler Dnite. Obviously, this set is meant to be paired with Spikes to abuse the "will he roar or body slam?" dilemma every time M-Alt comes in on something it checks. The last slot is obv team dependent. Heal Bell is nice for Stall teams which don't really care about this set unless you have a ton of hazards and spam Roar, Substitute is meh tbh but I haven't tried it so I'm not gonna remove it entirely, Earthquake can punish Heatran and Jirachi for coming in and getting paralyzed, and Pursuit is an interesting thing that I actually just found out yesterday while playing the cartridge game. Apparently it's an Egg Move and it seems pretty decent on this M-Alt which hard walls the Latis. If they switch, Pursuit does ~54% average to Latios which is all specs Keldeo needs to KO later on (with Rocks). Pursuit seems really gimmicky and otherwise completely useless if they don't have a Lati@s lol. The EV spread has enough speed to speed creep Jolly Azumarill speed creepers (Rotom-W and Def Landorus-T) and the rest is put into bulk.

CroMalt

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 248 HP / 148 Def / 96 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Slam
- Dragon Dance
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

RestTalk sort of has some utility over Roost + Heal Bell / Substitute / Refresh. Heal Bell has massive utility, but only 8 pp, so in practise you tend to lose to everything with a status move. Substitute means you can't switch into Scald, Rotom-W, Heatran, etc. In comparison, CroMalt is very self-sufficient and dgaf about status. Refresh DD sets are very similar, but RestTalk still has some advantages such as absorbing Sleep from Breloom / Moonguss, recovering HP + removing status in one turn (which sounds insignificant but can be helpful when dealing with status and offensive pressure simultaneously), and winning PP stalls.

Body Slam > Return because you're a defensive set and the paralysis chance is super nifty. EV's just give solid mixed bulk and enough speed to beat Adamant BellyAzu.

Tailwind Mega Altaria

Altaria-Mega @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine -> Pixilate
EVs: 248 HP / 164 Def / 96 Spe
Impish Nature
- Tailwind
- Return
- Roost
- Heal Bell

It's fairly self explanatory. It's bulky enough to provide consistent tailwind support, gives heal bell support, and also doesn't mind having its own speed boosted.

"Nice win condition nerd" Mega Altaria

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Perish Song
- Roost
- Heal Bell
- Body Slam/Return

This set is designed for stall teams, to both provide cleric support and put a stop to the various boosting sweepers in OU, surviving hits from Clefable, Latias, Mega Sableye and Manaphy. Perish Song is a highly underrated move that can also beat Baton Pass teams, and we all know how powerful that particular archetype still is.

Its SpD is maxed out because I believe many threats to stall are special attackers (that means you, Manaphy). 148 Defense EVs and a positive nature could be used to take a hit from opposing Altaria, but you probably want someone else's set for that.

Return is slashed with Body Slam, because on a stall team you sometimes don't want your opponents to be paralyzed.

Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Rock]

Lures and severely weakens the ever common Talonflame, which normally acts as an excellent check to special M-Altaria. Also handles Zard-Y and Volcarona to an extent.

252 SpA Mega Altaria Hidden Power Rock vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Talonflame: 212-252 (59 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Mega Altaria Hidden Power Rock vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Talonflame: 232-276 (64.6 - 76.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Return
- Outrage
- Earthquake / Fire Blast
- Dragon Dance

This set acts as a lure for both of Altaria's best answers, Talonflame and Mega Venusaur, all the while being able to sweep.

252+ Atk Mega Altaria Outrage vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Venusaur: 160-190 (43.9 - 52.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock (you can even hold off MEvo, set up to +2 as it Sludge Bombs you, and OHKO it as you Mega)

+1 252+ Atk Mega Altaria Outrage vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Mega Venusaur: 180-213 (49.4 - 58.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock (doesn't OHKO back)

+1 252+ Atk Mega Altaria Outrage vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Talonflame: 381-448 (106.1 - 124.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Don't let your memes be dreams
Albacore Your set is max HP / max Spe jolly but your calcs are Max Atk adamant so I'd fix that.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Roost
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

Double-Edge is an extremely powerful move and it gets some very important OHKOs and 2HKOs compared to Return. The recoil damage sucks, but it can prevent you from getting statussed or from taking another strong attack (like TFlame's Brave Bird or Landorus-T's EQ)

+1 252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Rotom-W: 225-265 (74.2 - 87.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Rotom-W: 262-310 (86.4 - 102.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 0 HP / 24 Def Landorus-T: 226-267 (70.8 - 83.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 24 Def Landorus-T: 264-312 (82.7 - 97.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 232 HP / 0 Def Mega Venusaur: 132-156 (36.7 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Double-Edge vs. 232 HP / 0 Def Mega Venusaur: 156-183 (43.4 - 50.9%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 120 HP / 0 Def Talonflame: 140-165 (42.8 - 50.4%) -- 2% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Double-Edge vs. 120 HP / 0 Def Talonflame: 165-194 (50.4 - 59.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 80 HP / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Fire Blast
- Toxic
- Roar / Roost

Toxic is a really nice move on Mega Altaria, as it cripples a few of its checks, such as Talonflame, Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, Unaware Clefable, Togekiss, Mega Camerupt, and Azumarill, on the switch, rendering unable to switch in repeatedly later on or paving the way for a teammate. Roar is a nice option to phaze foes, racking up poison damage from Toxic, as well as potential entry hazards such as Stealth Rock. Mega Altaria is a cool supportive attacker with this set. EVs could be twisted a little bit but 176 Speed guarantees the jump on Adamant Bisharp.

Haze Malt

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature/Impish Nature
- Haze
- Roost
- Heal Bell
- Hyper Voice/Return

Haze Malt is a great mon for stall teams, checking a good amount of setup sweepers (sadly it loses to Bish) and being a reliable MSab check, even having Heal Bell for WoWand tesm support. Roost is given, while Heal Bell is a useful move on stall/semistall. Haze is a cool unexpected move that can screw over a chunk of threats, including some that think they can set up on the switch. I chose HV > Return as it allows for you to kill RockyChomp without taking recoil and still threaten MSab if you're WoW'd without having to heal bell first.
