The Rarely-rarely used Contest

Big thanks to Oglemi for approving this.

[Kerian or somebody needs to make a pic for me]

Preface:

I am assuming some of you have seen something like this around whether it's the Dark Horse project or the new Underdog Challenge in NU. For those who do not know, this project aims into creating more variety in the RU Metagame. This will attempt to find certain unique niches that lesser-user Pokemon have and raise their competitive presence. This does not stop here. The project also intends to raise discussion on the Pokemon used. This being but not limited to sets, team building, cores, etc.

Rules:
  • The main and defining rule of this project is you must use Rarely-Rarely Used [RRU] Pokemon. This is defined as any Pokemon below 3% usage in the August Usage Stats.
  • Only two Pokemon need to below 3%, the rest of the team can be any Pokemon allowed in RU.
  • When you sign up you have to make a new Alt. This will be on Pokemon Showdown.
  • You are allowed to switch your Pokemon in your team that are above 3%. But if you want to switch your rarely-rarely used team members you must post a new registration form.
  • This should go without saying but follow all rules. Do not be dishonest or cheat.

Discussion:
Discussion is one of the key points of this who project. This thread is for you and others to discuss the lesser used Pokemon, sets they use, and more! Also do not be afraid to ask questions or help with the Pokemon you are using. Here a some suggested discussion topics.

-What Underdog Pokemon you are using?
-What Pokemon you are pairing them with, as well as cores they're effective in?
-The state of the RU metagame and how to build teams in it.
-What Pokemon you used that worked, as well as ones that didn't?

A couple things to remember. Your PO Username should be a new alt. Hall of fame standing is empty at first but when you do make it feel free to link us to you accomplishments.

I also suggest you add the set you are using, links of other post pertaining to your Pokemon, and sprites for visualization!

Here is an example of a registration form.

I am glad to see our latter sign-ups are using more than two R-RU Pokemon. I can see people are going for the gold and diamond. Remember guys to discuss also the Pokemon you are using, why you are, and sets for them.

I made it, homies~

Here are the Michael Phelps of my team

Floatzel @ Life Orb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)
~ Waterfall
~ Bulk Up
~ Aqua Jet
~ Focus Punch

Floatzel's main selling point is its pimpin base 115 Speed. I can go Adamant so Floatzel can hit as hard as Kabutops while outgunning anything in the rain. Floatzel also comes in handy outside of rain, since it's still faster than +ve base 100 Speed mons even with neutral nature.

Waterfall, Bulk Up, and Aqua Jet are staples. Since I wanted Floatzel to lure and eliminate lol Ferroseed, the last slot went to Focus Punch, which actually came in handy a few times, lol, since all of his other options are weak. Crunch would've been nice to destroy Slowking, but +1 Waterfall 2HKOs in Rain. I don't really need Ice Punch, cuz +1 Waterfall OHKOs Sceptile and Lilligant.

Ludicolo @ Life Orb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 12 HP / 252 SpA / 244 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
~ Surf
~ Hydro Pump
~ Giga Drain
~ Ice Beam

Pretty much the best special rain sweeper in RU (& NU!). STAB Giga Drain sets it apart from Omastar and Gorebyss, being able to 2HKO Slowking (sometimes I need SR for the really defensive ones, though) and replenish its health. If Ludi can Giga Drain Slowking on the predicted switch, I'm golden. Giga Drain is weak otherwise, though, so it may be risky if the opponent has other mons that can switch into Ludicolo. Surf and Hydro Pump so Ludi has both consistency and power available. Ludicolo is surprisingly bulky despite its sweeper spread and Life Orb, so I can count on it to do some early- mid-game wallbreaking.

Volbeat @ Damp Rock
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 16 SpD
Calm Nature (+SpD, -Atk)
~ Encore
~ Substitute
~ Baton Pass
~ Rain Dance

Gorebyss @ White Herb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
~ Surf
~ Ice Beam
~ Shell Smash
~ Hidden Power [Grass]

Volbeat and Gorebyss makes the perfect pair. Volbeat is the only reason why Gorebyss can pull off Shell Smash easily. Usually it takes too much turns to set up both Rain Dance and SubPass, so I usually pass Substitutes to Gorebyss, which can then start sweeping with Shell Smash even without Rain. I could then use Volbeat later to set up Rain. Prankster is 2 Gud.

I first started with a Lanturn - Uxie - Volbeat Rain Inducer core, but I just needed more fire power, so I replaced Lanturn and Uxie with Rotom-C and SR Kabutops and it was smooth sailing from there :)

Here's my final match - my Kabutops haxing Brand Power's Tangrowth ruined it, but w/e

congrats to Pocket! Rain was certainly a strong option for this challenge, especially considering the two Prankster bugs at our disposal. Huge fan of Floatzel, would've loved to see some opponents reaction as he pulled out a Focus Punch on the switch lol.

Have started my own attempt with 6 RRU pokes for kicks: Braivary, Jynx, Sawsbuck, Ditto, Charizard, and I did have Kanga but pretty sure he is about to be replaced.

my team of 6 misfit toys, may or may not continue with them!

Braviary (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Rock Slide
- Superpower

Braviary is just a worthwhile hard hitter and has superb coverage options. Chose Rock Slide over Return as there isnt really a bulky electric running around RU, and Rock Slide is necessary to OHKO Archeops and Moltres that think they will be faster. Surprise value of the scarf is great, but its also a necessary item to help support my two SD sweepers as they are not the fastest jokers around.

Jynx (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 200 HP / 56 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Lovely Kiss
- Substitute
- Ice Beam

My only mildly defensive mon, because I love SubCM Jynx so much. Can set up on a number of popular defensive mons like Slowking, Lanturn, Cryonogal, and Qwilfish. Mostly successful just because no one is prepared for it, and it can threaten many things if it gets behind a sub. Unfortunately things like Entei and Escavalier will stop it everytime all the time so dont even bother clicking sub if either of them are still alive.

Sawsbuck @ Lum Berry
Trait: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
- Double-Edge
- Nature Power

Because Smeargle and Lilligant exist and because he was my favorite new mon from BW (and not that you see it much, but this is the perfect Rotom counter)! Lum Berry allows me to SD up on Cofags and Uxies, only requiring a little prior damage on both to KO at +2, and even if they do status me at +2 he can still keep the pressure on. Pleasantly surprised with his performance, did his fair share of late game sweeping after faster things like Manectric and Sceptile were gone.

Ditto @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Imposter
EVs: 252 Def / 248 HP / 8 SDef
Bold Nature
IVs: 30 Def / 30 SDef / 30 Spd
- Transform
- Transform
- Transform
- Transform

A must have piece to this team, as nothing carries any bulk whatsoever and I need insurance against setup sweepers. Also the best option against suspected Aero leads. IVs are for HP rock, as very many HP users in the tier are weak to rock, notably Moltres and Typhlosion.

Samurott (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 252 SAtk / 120 Atk / 136 Spd
Mild Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Superpower
- Megahorn

Samurott is pretty awesome imo. Most teams only way to beat him is revenge killing, so the trick is just to get him in safely. He works very well with Ditto, Sawsbuck, and Jynx; Ditto jumps into electric attacks from Manectric and Electivire, Sawsbuck in grass attacks, and Jynx can take on Lanturn and Alomolalalala who otherwise wall Samurott. Powerful Hydro Pump spam works well, though his speed is a considerable letdown :/

Charizard @ Flying Gem
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast

Saw this set in some RU thread, looked like fun, and it was! Because Im using RRU mons I refuse to bother with a spinner, so that hurts zard a fair amount. His bulky is passable though so he can sometimes set up an SD even at 50%. Plays very similarly to Sawsbuck; they are both fearsome sweepers but really are hampered by that fast-but-not-too-fast speed tier. Zard excels are luring in Lanturn and Slowking though which is nice, and providing rocks aren't up he makes a a solid Cofagirus switch in.

Advice welcome! Normal Gem Hitmonlee can straight up gg this team :/

Belated Congrats to pocket. He has now been added to the Hall of fame.I actually will use some of his RRU Pokemon! I hope we can get some more activity and interest in the project!

(If you're gonna ask about my opponent's ladder score, my Showdown is derpy and it always shows them as 1000. Dunno why.)

I would definitely say my RRUs pulled their weight, as my little trick room team used them quite a bit. Here they are-

Marowak @ Thick Club
Trait: Rock Head
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SDef
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Double-Edge
- Substitute

Pretty standard Trick Room Sweeper. Set up a sub on something you know will be scared out, then sweep with EQ and Double-Edge. Stone Edge works for coverage, but the other moves were mainly used. It is one of the best sweepers in Trick Room in the tier, and definitely pulled its weight.

Solosis @ Focus Sash
Trait: Magic Guard
Level: 1
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Trick Room
- Endeavor
- Toxic
- Psychic

Now, what is this SHENANIGANS? Why, it is Solosis! Level 1, at that. Believe it or not, this thing is actually decent. At Level one, it has an AMAZING 4 speed, meaning it outspeeds pretty much everything in Trick Room. Essentially, use trick room as you go down to one, then go for an Endeavor to cripple their thingy. At one HP, they're pretty easy to take down.

So yeah, challenge complete. Gonna try again with a new team, this time gonna go for silver.

New name- Combustion
Hall of Fame standing- None yet!
Rarely-Rarely Used Pokemon- Volbeat, Emboar, Exeggutor and Sawsbuck

Reached 1752 with my new sun team. So yay! Two Bronzes! I will go for a higher rank, though. Also, the ladder actually shows my name now! It's a MIRACLE!

Also, I have now noticed that my team indeed had FOUR RRUs, not just two. I'll update my last post.
