Tropius (GP 2/2)

[Overview]

Tropius doesn't fit in very well in NU. On one hand, Tropius's typing and bulk allows it to check threats such as Sawk, Golurk, and Swords Dance Samurott. In addition, Tropius's movepool is gigantic, and it has access to three good abilities. On the other hand, Tropius's typing leaves it vulnerable to most special attackers in NU, and its Speed is rather lackluster, which hinders any chances to go strictly offensive or defensive. The best bet Tropius has to fit on a team is to take advantage of Harvest, Leech Seed, and its Flying typing, turning it into a decent SubSeed user. Still, Tropius faces competition from Exeggutor, which wields similar bulk and higher Special Attack.

[SET]
name: SubSeed
move 1: Leech Seed
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Air Slash
move 4: Protect / Toxic
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Harvest
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 144 Def / 116 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With this set, Tropius supports its team with Leech Seed, spreading recovery to teammates whilst forcing switches. With Substitute, Tropius can wall many Pokemon by repeatedly using Substitute until Leech Seed KOes the opponent. This is possible because Harvest grants Tropius extra recovery through multiple Sitrus Berries. In addition, one of the greatest reasons to use Tropius over other SubSeed users is its Flying typing, which allows Tropius to threaten most Grass-type Pokemon attempting to switch in and absorb Leech Seed with a STAB Air Slash. Protect is an option so Tropius can stall longer and gain more chances to regain Sitrus Berries. However, Toxic can be used to dispose of the opponent more quickly.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The 116 Speed EVs allow Tropius to outspeed Alomomola and Tangela before they can use a crippling status move. Tropius can use its good bulk in a specially defensive set similar to this one, walling threats such as Gardevoir and Musharna. However, Tropius's weaknesses to Fire- and Ice-type moves really hinder its ability to wall special attackers. Metang is a good partner for Tropius because it can take all of the Poison-, Flying-, and Rock-type attacks aimed at Tropius as well as gaining valuable recovery from Leech Seed. Water-types such as Samurott and Seismitoad cover Tropius's Fire- and Ice-type weaknesses and appreciate the recovery as well. Entry hazard support is also very important to Tropius because of the many switches it forces. Toxic Spikes support from Roselia or Garbodor is the most crucial because it limits the amount of times a Pokemon can stay in on Tropius, allowing it to safely use Substitute more often. Lastly, good offensive partners for Tropius are Braviary, Charizard, and Swellow, which can eliminate the Grass-types that tend to annoy Tropius.

[Other Options]

Tropius has access to Roost, for even more recovery, and Whirlwind, for phazing. The LumRest combination is viable as well, allowing Tropius to fight status, which really hinders its performance in battle. Tropius has access to boosting moves such as Curse, Swords Dance, and Dragon Dance as well as offensive moves such as Leaf Blade, Aerial Ace, Nature Power, Bullet Seed, and Body Slam, but sweepers with higher Attack stats are more viable. Tropius can attempt to sweep in the sun with Chlorophyll or Solar Power, but it is outclassed by Victreebel, Sawsbuck, and Charizard in that regard. Tropius can also set sun, but Pokemon with better typings and abilities are more suited for the job.

[Checks and Counters]

Miltank absorbs Leech Seed with Sap Sipper, takes little damage from Air Slash, and can remove poison with Heal Bell. Duosion also avoids damage from Leech Seed and Toxic and can set up Calm Minds to minimize Air Slash damage. Pokemon with reliable recovery that take little damage from Air Slash can handle Tropius as well. RestTalk users can even beat Tropius with Toxic. Taunt users, such as Mandibuzz and Misdreavus, shut Tropius down. Status really hinders Tropius's performance in battle as well, so any faster Pokemon can cripple Tropius before it uses Substitute. Stealth Rock limits the amount of times Tropius can switch in, and setters such as Golem also wield Rock Blast, which can break through Tropius's Substitutes. Lastly, any special attacker with super effective coverage, such as Simisear or Charizard, can easily break through Tropius's Substitutes and force it out.

cute

[Overview]
 • Doesn't contribute much to the current NU metagame.
 • Decent bulk and typing lets Tropius check threats such as Golurk, Sawk, and Swords Dance Samurott.
 • Its typing and lack of speed also leaves it vulnerable to most special attackers. *cough* Jynx.
 • Three good abilities. Harvest is its best niche.
 • Bulk + SubSeed makes Tropius an okay Pivot. It still faces competition from Exeggutor as a SubSeeder, as it has similar bulk and a much higher Special Attack stat.
 • Very large movepool.
[SET]
name: SubSeed
move 1: Leech Seed
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Air Slash
move 4: Protect / Toxic
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Harvest
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 144 Def / 116 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Supports the team with Leech Seed, and Substitute allows Tropius to stall out many opponents itself.
 • One of the main reasons to use SubSeed Tropius over other SubSeed Pokemon because STAB Air Slash hurts most Grass-types (bar specific cases such as Cradily) trying to absorb Leech Seed.
 • Protect racks up Leech Seed damage, gives Tropius more chances to harvest Sitrus Berries, and scouts for super effective attacks.
 • Toxic deals reliable damage to pokemon that can easily shrug off Leech Seed and Air Slash damage.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • 116 Speed evs to outspeed Alomomola and Tangela.
 • Tropius can use its great mixed bulk in a similar specially defensive set, walling threats such as Gardevoir and Musharna. However, Tropius's unfortunate 4x weakness to Ice-type coverage really hinders it, as it is a common coverage type for special attackers.
 • Metang is a good partner since it takes the Ice-, Rock-, and Poison-type attacks aimed at Tropius. Its lack of recovery also is supported by Tropius' Leech Seed.
 • Pokemon that can eliminate Grass-types quickly make Tropius' job much easier, such as Jynx, Charizard, and Swellow.
 • Hazard support from Pokemon such as Roselia, Scolipede, Garbodor, and Seismitoad are very helpful since Tropius causes a lot of switches. Toxic Spikes support deserves a special mention since it forces switches, limiting the chances Pokemon have to wear down Tropius. The most common Toxic Spikes absorber, Scolipede, is also weak to Air Slash, which is nice.
 • Samurott and Seismitoad are good partners that enjoy Leech Seed support and resist the Fire-type attacks aimed at Tropius.
[Other Options]
 • Roost for even more recovery.
 • LumRest helps Tropius fight status inducers.
 • Whirlwind can see some use on bulky sets.
 • Tropius can use Swords Dance, Curse, and Dragon Dance sets with moves such as Leaf Blade, Aerial Ace, Bullet Seed, Body Slam, and Nature Power, but it is outclassed by physical sweepers with higher Base Attack stats.
 • Tropius can attempt a sweep in the sun with Chlorophyll or Solar Power, but it is outclassed by Victreebel, Sawsbuck, and Charizard.
 • Tropius has Harvest as a niche in setting up Sunny Day, but Pokemon with Prankster or pivoting moves are generally better.
[Checks and Counters]
 • Miltank can absorb Leech Seed, wall Air Slash, and eliminate poisoning with Heal Bell.
 • Pokemon with reliable recovery moves that don't mind Air Slash can hold their own against Tropius.
 • Duosion is immune to Leech Seed due to Magic Guard and can set up multiple Calm Minds to minimize Air Slash damage.
 • RestTalk users can even beat sets with Toxic.
 • Taunt users shut Tropius down, such as Mandibuzz and Misdreavus.
 • Status cripples Tropius, so any Pokemon faster than it can severely hurt it.
 • Special Attackers with super effective coverage can easily KO Tropius, such as Jynx and Charizard.
 • Stealth Rock limits the amount of times Tropius can switch in. Golem can set these up and also break Tropius' Substitutes with Rock Blast.

no mention of leaf blade :o. Leaf Blade is a cool move, it just happens to be illegal with Dragon Dance. Should have an OO mention imo.

Also a SpDef EV spread should be mentioned in AC, it checks different things, but it still really viable. Tropius is a cool mon :o.

Also explicitly mention toxic spikes support imo. It makes it much harder to wear down Tropius, as you can't stay in and battle it. And the most common absorber, Scolipede, is wrecked by Air Slash.

i think this should be ev'ed to beat out standard alomomola but idk

roost in oo

mention that it faced competition from eggy as a subseeder

Okie dokie FLCL i put the speed evs to beat alomomola in AC for now, but if more people believe the loss of bulk is worth it I will add it to the set.

I did some calcs the few things that changes is that Choice Band Primeape's U-Turn has 50% to break Tropius's Substitute, and that Metang and Samurott can break the Substitute 100% of the time with Meteor Mash and Megahorn respectively. So it doesn't really change any 3HKO to 2HKO (unless I missed something).

TLDR 116 Speed evs is worth it imo as it let Tropius set up on more stuff like Alomomola, Tangela..

 • In the second sentence, Trop doesn't really *wall* Sawk and Golurk since they both like to carry Ice Punch which can OHKO. It's more of a check.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
It is also a bonus that Scolipede, the most popular Toxic Spikes absorber, is weak to Air Slash.
 • I'd honestly delete this sentence, it's true but not that important imo especially since Trop can't OHKO Scoli anyway.
Looks good aside from a few minor nitpicks, so do this and I'll stamp Lolkomori

Though not a very good strategy, I feel it's worth mentioning that Tropius can make use of Lansat Berry. Along with Natural Gift and havest, it gives Tropius access to a somewhat reusable 80 base power physical flying attack, which is considerably stronger than Aerial Ace. Additionally, if Lansat activates because of low HP, Leaf Blade provides a intimidating +3 crit rate. Unfortunately this set loses access to Dragon Dance, but retains access to Swords Dance.

I found this set to be rather difficult to do anything with while testing, but it caught enough things off guard that I feel it's worth mentioning in Other Options, especially seeing that Natural Gift is obscure enough that it's likely to be completely overlooked.
