Turnabout is Fair Play: Avnomke vs. chifii! (3 vs 3 LC Rotation)

Today at the ASB Arena, we're putting a new spin on battling! Rotation Battles are probably the least-common battles conducted in this arena, but that doesn't make them any less exciting than battles of other types. Avnomke and chifii are here today to demonstrate this fact in what promises to be a dizzying affair!

(no I will not stop making rotation-related puns I'm already on a roll)

Here are the rules for today's encounter:

This is how we do it (I think; I've never reffed Rotation before):
Dummy007 arbitrarily sends out everything.
Avnomke chooses his lead 'mon.
chifii chooses his lead 'mon and orders.
Avnomke orders.
Dummy007 refs/screws up/whines about how hard both of your usernames are to spell.
Avnomke makes another move.
chifii chooses chommands.
Dummy007 whines/refs some more.
etc.

And with that, the battle begins! Avnomke, pick your lead!

I'm going to lead with Pauly.

Also, since there is effectively three times the movepool and potential to switch to a resist, should we have three times the substitutions? (i.e. 6 subs)

I'm not sure how rotations go down. I know that we PM our orders and rotations to the ref instead of posting them in the thread. I'll ask around on IRC.

EDIT: IRC doesn't seem to have an answer, nor can I find anything in the Player's Handbook. In the meantime, it seems that this is the closest thing to an official guide to how these things work. It says we can't sub based on what pokemon is brought in; we can only sub based on the moves of our opponents, and I'm pretty sure rotating can't be influenced by subs.

Also, I lead with Colloshale.

EDIT EDIT: What we can do, though, is both agree to have an additional sub. That's always an option

So here's the consensus:

3 subs
PM me actions
Only rotate prior to A1
May not sub for rotations, but may sub for moves on other Pokemon

If you both agree to these terms, Avnomke and chifii, then PM me your first set of three(!) actions.

Round 1 Begin!

The ground starts spinning, signifying the beginning of the first round! When it stops, Zen and Timburr are left facing one another, which means they'll be taking each other on!

...Or, at least, they would be, but it seems as though they're both totally stalled. Neither is willing to make a move; it seems that Zen is trying to charge energy in his fist while also building up psychic energy, while Timburr has half a forcefield up and is also bracing for impact while trying to hoist a rock. Seeing no way out of this stalemate, I race over to IRC to discover the following:

<13:32> waterwarrior: conflicting subs cancel each other out

The Pokemon are both visibly relieved at this revelation, although Timburr's relief quickly fades after he is smacked upside the head with a brick-breaking blow. Gathering his wits, he responds by throwing a boulder. BUT WAIT!

As a result, it bounces almost harmlessly off of Zen's conditioned exterior.

Amused, Zen leaps forward, bringing his fist within inches of Timburr's face. Timburr recoils...only to be given a slap across the face instead of a punch. It seems that flinching wasn't worth it after all.

The third action is an exact repeat of the first, complete with SpongeBob picture. It seems that originality is not the primary focus here...

At the end of the first round, Avnomke has a notable advantage over chifii! But it's too early in the match to tell for sure who will win. Can Avnomke keep his lead stationary, or will chifii turn the tables on him? Find out next round!

Avnomke, chifii, send in your next rotations/orders/subs!

Best F***in subs ever.

Also, Avnomke, I think your Froakie's speed is incorrect. It should be 81 rather than 82 because you always round down when dealing with Speed.

IAR EDIT: Incorrect. +Speed Natures round up, -Speed Natures round down, & the Accuracy boost of a +Speed Nature is rounded normally. Read the rules.

Round 2 Begin!

chifii calls for a rotation to Tiny, and the battlefield happily obliges. Suddenly, Zen is being stared down by a whale nearly four times his size. And this whale. Wants. REVENGE.

Tiny immediately springs off the ground, leaping high into the air. She goes so high, in fact, that Zen fires a meaningless Psycho Cut forward, not expecting Tiny to ever come back down. So, naturally, Tiny smashes to the ground immediately afterwards, dealing some moderate damage to Zen in the process. (Moral of the action: Patience is a virtue.)

Tiny continues her merciless assault by leaping forward at Zen. Zen flinches at the thought of another whale attack, but Tiny merely slaps Zen across the face. How this scores a critical hit is beyond me, but it happened, so I guess we'll just have to live with it.

The third action proceeds the same way as the first, with Zen again losing faith in Tiny and expending a little pointless energy. Also like the first action, Tiny immediately follows that by crashing down onto Zen. It seems that the whole patience thing might be lost on Pokemon...

The match is about even at this point, with neither side having a real advantage. Will there be any new twists next round?

Avnomke, chifii, send in R3 actions when you can.

I should have used Drain Punch instead of Psycho Cut, thanks to my subs. And now that I think about it, Psycho Cut instead of Brick break in R1.
Subs in question:
(R1) If [Rotate Timburr] is used then replace actions with Psycho Cut ~ Fake Out ~ Psycho Cut
(R2) If [Rotate Coloshale] is used then replace all instances of Psycho Cut with Drain Punch

So here's the consensus:

3 subs

May not sub for rotations, but may sub for moves on other Pokemon
I also marked both of those subs as illegal in the "actions" section of their respective rounds. (Actually, it's a good thing Zen's Colosshale sub didn't activate, or Zen would have lost a good deal more energy.)

Round 3 Begin!

Oh, boy, this round is a doozy. Inside the following HIDE tags is an explanation of why I ignored one substitution from each of you.
There is no standard for Rotation Battles as to which player's subs kick in first in the case of a sub conflict. So let's look at each case separately.
First, assume that Avnomke's sub kicks in first. Timburr is using Counter 3 times, so Rodan's actions change to Ice Beam -> Ice Beam -> Ice Beam. chifii has no sub for Ice Beam, so all sub conditions are met and chifii gets absolutely ruined.
Now assume that chifii's sub kicks in first. Rodan is using Dig A1 and Acrobatics A2, so both of chifii's last two subs would activate. However, there is codification for a case like this: the sub listed first takes preference. Therefore, Timburr uses Bide all 3 actions, and, because Avnomke has no sub for Bide, Rodan proceeds with his normal actions and everything is fine.
Thus we have two sets of equally possible and legal actions: one that's roughly even and one that wrecks chifii. Unfortunately, we have no way to tell which set should happen, which, according to EspyOwner on IRC, qualifies as a sub conflict, so both of those subs are ignored. chifii's third sub doesn't cause a conflict, however, so it happens normally, leaving the actions the way you see them in the flavor.

The field rotates again, leaving Timburr and Rodan to duke it out this round. Timburr, sensing that Rodan is going to bust out some acrobatic moves later, braces himself to endure the hits. Rodan, however, isn't quite ready to get funky yet and instead tunnels his way over to Timburr (quite unnecessarily, I think), leaps out of the ground, and pushes Timburr over.

Now Rodan busts out his fancy moves. Walking like he's on a tightrope, jumping and flipping like a trapeze star, putting one leg behind his head- Rodan is a real acrobat! The sheer wow factor of this display does some serious damage to Timburr's self esteem, but that doesn't stop Timburr from more than repaying the damage in a massive physical blow to Rodan's chest!

Recovering somewhat from the Counter, Rodan pulls off another tunneling move, again dealing subpar damage to Timburr. Fortunately, this means that Timburr doesn't have a lot to Counter, although he stills expends a large amount of energy doing so.

In the end, Timburr barely outdamages Rodan at the cost of much more energy. Still, anything is possible this early in the match. What will happen the next go-round? Stay tuned to find out!
