Finally, a little something extra. I calculated the probability for every Pokemon to feature in a battle, being in either or both competing teams. The formula I used is the following:

Code:
Probability for a Pokemon to feature in a battle = (U * (4*B - 1 - U)) / (B * (4*B - 2))

where B is the total number of battles played in the entire month
U is the amount of usage for that particular Pokemon
If you want to know from where I got this formula, post here and I'll reply with an explanation.

Amazing how Bullet Punch has a higher Typical use percentage than Dragon Dance considering:

Dragon Dance can be run on: Salamence/Gyarados/Tyranitar/Dragonite
All of which are top threats (less so Dragonite)

Bullet Punch can be run on: Scizor
And occasionally Lucario.

So basically Scizor has trumped every DD sweeper o.O
Thanks for these X-Act! They'll prove very helpful :D

Also Metagross, most leads set run Bullet Punch. The thing about this though is that not all, maybe not even most, Salamence run Dragon Dance, (most Gyara do though), most Tyranitar certainly do not use Dragon Dance. Just about every Scizor out there will have Bullet Punch.

Wow, just about 50% of teams have Scizor.

Thank you X-act.

imperfectluck

Banned deucer.
This does not mean that 50% of teams have Scizor, just that there is a 50% that either player will have Scizor.

Hmm, these are interesting. Especially this:

Bullet Punch 6.75%
Dragon Dance 6.73%
Swords Dance 6.71%

Thanks for these as always.

By the time the Garchomp peaked out usage (as in right before it was banned), it reached +50% usage. I wonder if Scizor will break that record?

Not only that, Bullet Punch trumped out Waterfall, meaning Scizor is more popular than Gyarados.

Are there going to be item percentages this month?

Since you didn't link.

Spikes at 2.06% for July, 2.27% for August. Looks like I'm keeping my spinner.
This is probably the effect of the high-profile RMT threads (Team Kevin Please Come Home, and also the recent SD Breloom team that got 16th). Both those teams featured Spikes and needed them to function, so people either copied the teams outright or made teams with similar strategies.

There's something that's always bugged me about the typical moveset statistics. I'll demonstrate by example.

6. YANMEGA (Usages: 15772)

Average EVs: 4 HP, 24 Def, 252 SpA, 228 Spe
Average Nature Boosts/Reductions: -10.0% Atk, +6.0% SpA, +4.0% Spe

Typical moveset:
- Bug Buzz
- Air Slash
- Hidden Power Ground
- Protect

* U-turn can replace any of the four moves listed.
| Yanmega | Move | Bug Buzz | 98.5 |
| Yanmega | Move | Air Slash | 97.5 |
| Yanmega | Move | HP-Ground | 40.1 |
| Yanmega | Move | Protect | 38.3 |
| Yanmega | Move | U-turn | 33.1 |
| Yanmega | Move | Hypnosis | 20.3 |
| Yanmega | Move | Shadow Ball | 13.6 |
| Yanmega | Move | Substitute | 12.7 |
| Yanmega | Move | Ancientpower | 11.5 |
| Yanmega | Move | Psychic | 7.6 |
| Yanmega | Move | HP-Rock | 5.5 |
| Yanmega | Move | Other (7) | < 4.2 |
Now, it says that U-turn can replace any of the 4 moves. However, can U-turn really replace Bug Buzz or Air Slash and still have a typical moveset? It seems more reasonable to say that U-turn could replace Protect or HP Ground, but it really can't replace Air Slash or Bug Buzz.

Heres the disclaimer from last month's:
The average EVs are first listed. Note that this provides an average indication of how the EVs were distributed. However, if, say, there were many users maxing out HP EVs and an equal number of users not providing any HP EVs on the same Pokemon, the average HP EVs would be near 128, which isn't very indicative of how the HP EVs were provided. In that case, just look at Doug's stats to be sure.

Next is the average nature boosts/reductions. Note that this may suffer from the same point above. If, say, players make a particular Pokemon Modest and an equal number of players make the same Pokemon Adamant, the average nature boosts/reductions would be 0% in all stats.

The typical moveset provides a moveset that is guaranteed to have been used by at least one player. Most of the time, this is not done by four moves, however, and hence the fifth, sixth, etc. moves are listed afterwards (in order of actual usage). In the example listed above, Scizor's typical moveset consists of four moves out of Bullet Punch, Superpower, U-turn, Pursuit and Swords Dance, where the moves are in increasing order of usage.
To shorten, these movesets/EV spreads are from number crunching, not actually looking at who used what specific moveset how many times.

Surprised no one asked about the formula yet.

Explanation please?
If there were a total of B battles, then 2*B teams competed. Of these 2*B teams, U of them contained the Pokemon in question. That means that (2*B - U) of them did not contain the Pokemon.

Suppose we're looking at a random battle, featuring two of these 2*B teams. The probability that one of these teams did not contain the Pokemon in question is (2*B - U) / (2*B). The probability that the other team also did not contain the Pokemon in question is (2*B - U - 1) / (2*B - 1), since the team couldn't have played against itself. Hence, the probability that a battle did NOT contain the Pokemon is ((2*B - U) / (2*B)) * ((2*B - U - 1) / (2*B - 1)). And thus, the probability that a battle DID contain the Pokemon is 1 minus the above expression, which can be simplified thus:

Code:
  1 - ((2*B - U) / (2*B)) * ((2*B - U - 1) / (2*B - 1))
= 1 - (2*B - U) * (2*B - 1 - U) / (B * (4*B - 2))
= 1 - (4*B^2 - 2*B - 2*B*U - 2*B*U + U + U^2) / (B * (4*B - 2))
= (B * (4*B - 2) - (4*B^2 - 2*B - 4*B*U + U + U^2)) / (B * (4*B - 2))
= (4*B^2 - 2*B - 4*B^2 + 2*B + 4*B*U - U - U^2) / (B * (4*B - 2))
= (4*B*U - U - U^2) / (B * (4*B - 2))
= U * (4*B - 1 - U) / (B * (4*B - 2))
as given in the original post.

Earthquake is realy good on OU and UU. That Thunder is used in Uber so much is because Kyogre is in Uber Tier.

Thanks a lot X-Act for this facts.

Er... *ahem* Good work as always, X-Act. I'm surprised Tbolt outraks SR in usage in OU.

Sub at 8.88% usage as well surprises me. Sub/Charge Beam Rotom-A/Magnezone ftw.

Nice job x-act, interesting as always. Don't have time to really look at them now just sort of skim.

In August, if you played 2 games, there was a 99.16% chance that you or your opponents had a Scizor. I'm not surprised, frankly.

Uh, actually, it's more to the line of 64.2%.
It's actually to the tune of 74.58%. :) A quick way to approximate this is to take the percentage listed in the original post, multiply it by the same percentage subtracted from 200 and then divide by 100..

Yeah, but uh since the original quote was "if you play 2 battles...", inferring that "your" team is counted twice. I'm not sure how to weight it (not that good at statistics) though...

Interesting, Ice Beam usage is dropping and Thunderbolt usage is rising. Is this due to the general decline in Dragon-types, or another reason altogether? More mysteries to ponder...

Let's look at the statistics, and see that this is really explainable. The biggest changes is that Rotom formes and Latias jumped 4 ranks each, with increases of about 2.5%. Now you might be saying, Ice Beam fares better against these guys than Tbolt! Why is Tbolt usage going up?

Because about 60% of Rotom formes and 44% of Latias carry Tbolt. Done.
