Project Victim of the Week

Knight of Cydonia

I COULD BE BANNED!
On Chansey I would definitely be using 252 / 252 Bold rather than 0 /252 Bold. In practice this makes it less likely that you get 2hkoed by low kick / gunk shot due to small prior damage or hazard damage.

40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (60 BP) vs. 0 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 221-265 (34.4 - 41.3%) -- 60.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and 1 layer of Spikes

40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 221-265 (31.3 - 37.6%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and 1 layer of Spikes

For actual stall teams this spread is better due to how sparse counters to Greninja are and Chansey may be the teams best shot before scouting the set.

Ability: Drizzle

Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump/Scald

Toed has decent enough bulk, both physical and special, that it can counter every non grass move greninja. It resists ice beam and takes very little from low kick. While d-pulse and gunk shot do alot, Hydro Pump in the rain always ko's after 2 turns of life orb damage, while politoed is only 3hkod by gunk and dark pulse after rocks. scald is definitely the better stab on toed, and would also beat ninja if 1v1 most of the time, especially considering burns, but there is a chance politoed will lose to it.

Calcs:
212 SpA Life Orb Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Politoed: 140-165 (36.4 - 42.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

reserving Volcanion jellicent (i promise to make a post this time.)

Counter (w/ Extrasensory)

Jellicent (Bearded Lady)@Leftovers
EV'S: 248 HP/172 SpD/88 Spe
Trait: Water Absorb
Calm Nature
-Scald
-Recover
-Will-O-Wisp
-Shadow Ball

Everything here is taken from Jellicent's analysis. Jellicent was one of the most popular defensive pokemon used in OU last generation but has fallen from its previous grace as an amazing Keldeo counter thanks to the abundance of Dark types like Bisharp+Greninja and Knock Off spam due to the base power increase from 20-65 plus the 50% boost if it knocks off an item. However, that doesn't mean Jellicent doesn't have its place on teams. Thanks to its immense special bulk, Jelli gives no damns about any of Greninja's moves in this position. Here are the calcs:

216 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 172+ SpD Jellicent: 58-70 (14.3 - 17.3%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery
216 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Extrasensory vs. 248 HP / 172+ SpD Jellicent: 105-125 (26 - 31%) -- 4.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Gunk Shot vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Jellicent: 113-133 (28 - 33%) -- 85.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Jellicent: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time (lol)

Whether Jellicent chooses to either attack, recover, or burn Greninja, Jellicent will not lose. Here is the calc for the weakest possible attack on Greninja (Greninja will never be water type against Jellicent for what I hope is an obvious reason):

0 SpA Jellicent Scald vs. 4 HP / 0- SpD Greninja: 111-132 (38.8 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

While a Shadow Ball after an Extrasensory will OHKO 81.25% of the time after two rounds of LO recoil:

0 SpA Jellicent Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0- SpD Greninja: 222-264 (77.6 - 92.3%)

So yea, with Extrasensory, Greninja loses every time. However, I dont think there's anyway in hell Jellicent can beat it with Dark Pulse. FOR FUCK SAKE GF GIVE US VOLCANION ALREADY.

As a general rule, your entry should at least be considered reasonably viable in OU.
How annoying - I know it isn't ranked but I've done some extensive testing with Registeel in OU on mid-ladder, and it makes for a decent rocker and answer to Ninja on the right team.

I feel it's better this gen!

It doesn't have to be on the viability rankings list to be viable, it's the other way around. registeel might just not be on the list because not many people use it and no one cared to make a good nomination

Beedrill actually loses if it comes in on Gunk shot if running knock off over drill run, since after becoming poison type it resists both U-turn and Poison jab, and knock off fails to OHKO.

However this can most likely be avoided by using protect again(even if mega-evolved), since it's unlikely the Greninja will use Gunk Shot twice in a row and risk missing, so it will probably use Ice Beam which would then allow you to OHKO it in return.

But, in the worst case scenario If Beedrill comes in on Gunk shot and the other player continues to use Gunk Shot, Greninja wins if Beedrill doesn't carry Drill Run.

Right, well I'll go for it then.

I know, I know. First reaction is 'eugh, that thing...'

This isn't the place for me to argue Registeel's viability in OU, so just trust me when I say I've tested it a lot, and it's very good on certain teams.

One of the main reasons it's good? Being a fantastic answer to 9/10 Ninja variants. The only thing it can't do all of the time is switch in on a Low Kick (it's a clean 2HKO). Check some of these calcs:

252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Registeel: 109-129 (29.9 - 35.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Registeel: 120-143 (32.9 - 39.2%) -- 13% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

EDIT: just realised I calced with
252 HP, not 248. Forgive me pls.

Pretty impressive that LK is literally the only SE coverage Ninja carries that can ever come close to reliably beating you. You then proceed to threaten the Para or Rocks. Iron head is for a fairly spammable STAB an para flinch. SToss is for very reliable damage on everything else.

It's not perfect, and needs to be kept healthy with a Ninja on the other team (which can be super difficult, as Ninja can just hit n run), but it's one of the better stops around.

I'm also not going into my stance on Ninja, but let's just say I hope and pray.

Gastrodon can take greninja's most powerful attacks and recover off the damage. It can then proceed to 2hko the frog with earth power. Scald is to burn things on the switch, and earth power is for reliable damage against most mons, including a 2hko on heatran. Toxic is good to wear things down, and recover is for reliable recovery. Here are some calcs:

252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 133-157 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Gastrodon Earth Power vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 120-142 (41.9 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

the above set still common, 20% chance to lose isn't great, but not much else you can do

Not that reliable, but ninja is broken and this is the mon with the most offensive presence to stop it.

The standard Bulky SD set for Mega Scizor with the small diference in Sdef. Those +4 ev's guarantee that Dark Pulse Greninja is always a 3HKO after stealth rocks and then retaliate with Bullet Punch since it's a 2HKO. Another great thing about this mon is his ability before mega evolving that cuts Low kick power and his typing giving immunity to Gunk Shot. Also has Roost for recovery if you feeling low on health and a huge offensive power even before SD.

The Calc's:

40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 248 HP / 112 Def Mega Scizor: 97-114 (28.2 - 33.2%) -- 94.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Greninja Gunk Shot vs. Mega Scizor: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time

Neutral Damage against Greninja:

44+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 144-171 (50.5 - 60%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Status: Check

Victini @ Choice Scarf
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- V-create

Victini resists all of Greninja's moves except Dark Pulse (it can comfortably take Extrasensory) and OHKO back with V-Create when Greninja loses its Water typing. Bolt Strike is an option for Victini to catch bulky waters that try to switch-in on V-Create while U-Turn generates momentum for the team. Zen Headbutt can be used in the final slot to KO an opposing Greninja who had just used Gunk Shot. It is also an STAB move that can be used to clean up late game.

Calculations:
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Gunk Shot vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Victini: 168-199 (49.2 - 58.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Victini Zen Headbutt vs. 0 HP / 0 Def (Poison-type) Greninja: 332-392 (116.4 - 137.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Victini V-create vs. 0 HP / 0 Def (non-Water type) Greninja: 373-439 (130.8 - 154%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EDIT: Did anyone did Drapion yet? No time to do calculations or EV but it seems nice since with an AV and sufficient investment, Greninja's best neutral option to hit it is Low Kick

Flinches notwithstanding, you can switch into and reliably beat most Greninja while healthy. It pivots out as well, if Gren wants to hit and run, or attempt to Burn something on the switch. It can also handle Talonflame (even Natural Gift variants) as well as checking Keldeo, Thundurus, and takes on all Rotoms without Trick. It can be generally used on teams not needing the extra ground immunity that Rotom provides, and in need of a slower Voltturn.

Counter (Hard check for sets with Hydro Pump / HP Fire)

Klefki @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 120 SpD
Careful Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Spikes
- Play Rough
- Fairy Lock / Toxic

The EVs are super customizable, and the last slot is filler. I went with a balanced, but slightly more specially defensive EV spread. With Low Kick at 20 Base Power, an immunity to Gunk Shot, and a 4x resist to U-turn (if it carries that), physical defense doesn't matter against Greninja. So if you want Klefki to take on Greninja better, move more EVs to special defense.

In this case, I just use enough EVs so that Klefki doesn't get 2HKO'd by the combination of Ice Beam (or Dark Pulse or Extrasensory) + HP Fire (or Hydro Pump).

Dual screens sets also work. You would have to pick between Play Rough and Spikes then, and without Play Rough you're kind of pushing the definition of counter. But they do a good job setting up on Greninja.

Klefki resists every move on the given Greninja's set (Low Kick has 20 base power, that's the same as a resistance in my book). It also resists Grass Knot, can take a Hydro Pump or Hidden Power Fire if it needs to, and has no problem switching into U-turns with its 4x resist and SR resist. So basically Klefki can take whatever Greninja can throw at it, and the only moves that it would even notice hit it are Hydro Pump and HP Fire, neither of which are on the given set and don't KO anyways.

After Klefki comes in, it can Thunder Wave Greninja. A paralyzed Greninja is a dead Greninja, because almost the whole the tier can 1HKO it no problem. It can wear Greninja down with Play Rough after paralyzing, which is a 2HKO after the passive damage Greninja has taken at that point (3 rounds of Life Orb at least), unless Greninja is Fire type. But Klefki can also set up Spikes/Screens all over it if no Hydro Pump or HP Fire, since Ice Beam is its most damage move then and it's only a 5HKO.

For the posted set:
216 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 120+ SpD Klefki: 70-83 (22 - 26.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
Dark Pulse and Extrasensory are even worse due to also being resisted and having lower base power.
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (20 BP) vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Klefki: 27-32 (8.4 - 10%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Gunk Shot is lol.

Worst case scenario:
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 120+ SpD Klefki: 177-211 (55.6 - 66.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 120+ SpD Klefki: 198-234 (62.2 - 73.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

That's why more special defense EVs can help, but Klefki is still usually 2HKO'd unless it runs Light Screen:
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Klefki: 156-185 (49 - 58.1%) -- 62.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Offensively:
0 Atk Klefki Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 224-266 (78.5 - 93.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (If Greninja is part-Dark)
0 Atk Klefki Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 112-133 (39.2 - 46.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (Against a neutral type)

216 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 76 SpD Umbreon: 121-142 (30.7 - 36.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Umbreon unfortunately can't do much if ninja goes for low kick but a resisted foul play does decent damage and adds up with rocks and LO recoil
0- Atk Umbreon Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 71-84 (24.8 - 29.3%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO

Although umbreon is not the best mon in the ORAS meta it is great check to powerful mixed attackers such as greninja and kyub. Against ninja umbreon can switch in and wish protect using foul play when healthy enough. Foul play does very little to fighting type ninja unfortunately but the only way for gren to beat Umbro is a crit. Umbreon's Evs can be customemizable depending on your team but physically defensive Umbreon is a great answer to a lot of threats taking the latis with proper investment as well as non Sd bisharp, kyub, ninja and check certain set up sweepers thanks to foul play which is quite powerful thanks to STAB. Synchronize is also decent for absorbing burns from rotom-w, scalds, and whatever.

EDIT: Thanks firehusky . I've not used this thing since mid-XY and Mega Manectric was uncommon then. Implemented your suggestions.

Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 212 Atk / 44 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
- Aerial Ace

Mega Aerodactyl comes in on any move except Ice Beam, outspeed and OHKO Greninja with STAB Stone Edge. Aerial Ace is Aerodactyl's secondary STAB move and is boosted by Tough Claws so it can be used to hit neutral targets more reliably than Stone Edge. Ice Fang is also boosted by Tough Claws and is important to get the KO on Garchomp and Landorus while Earthquake completes the EdgeQuake coverage.

Calculations:
212 SpA Life Orb Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 146-173 (48.5 - 57.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 44 Def Mega Aerodactyl: 122-146 (40.5 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
212+ Atk Mega Aerodactyl Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 249-294 (87.3 - 103.1%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Just a little nit pick, but aerodactyl should be running the spread : 248 attack, 44 defense, and 216 speed with jolly to outspeed everything up to jolly mega beedrill, as adamant should never be used due to being outsped by threats such as mega manectric, mega lopunny, mega sceptile, and mega beedrill.

Since nobody is posting sets anymore, I'll nominate again then (not because I'm greedy but because I really hate Greninja)

Name: Swampert
Status: Counter

Swampert @ Swampertite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 104 HP / 248 Atk / 4 SpD / 152 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Rain Dance / Superpower

Mega Swampert avoids the 2HKO from any of Greninja's moves, outspeeds Greninja and OHKO it with STAB Earthquake . Waterfall is a reliable STAB move that also gets boosted by the rain and is Mega Pert's strongest option against neutral targets. Ice Punch is used to hit Dragons such as Mega Sceptile, Lati@s and Dragonite. Finally, Rain Dance can be used in the last slot so that Mega Pert can replenish it's own rain to reduce the pressure on Politoed to come in too often. Alternatively, Superpower can be used to heavily damage Ferrothorn which is a pain for Rain teams to deal with otherwise.

Calculations:
212 SpA Life Orb Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 104 HP / 4 SpD Mega Swampert: 144-172 (39.2 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
40 Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 104 HP / 0 Def Mega Swampert: 130-153 (35.4 - 41.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
244+ Atk Mega Swampert Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def (non-Water type) Greninja in Rain: 331-391 (116.1 - 137.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
244+ Atk Mega Swampert Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 276-325 (96.8 - 114%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
