Victim Of The Week [VoTW #27 - Zygarde / Zygarde-Complete]

Not open for further replies.
I'm voting for Solerme's Espeon. I really think Espeon was a little underrated in this because it does have a very discernible niche over it's competition by virtue of dual screens + Magic Bounce, which not only walls Breloom, but cripples the opposing team for the rest of many games with screens. Not to mention being able to put Breloom to sleep with yawn and getting an easy KO with psychic.

chemcool's Amoonguss

It walls Breloom just as good as Venusaur, but can be better at punishing switchings with a 100% acc sleep move and foul play, especially since it doesn't have to waste time recovering due to black sludge and Regenerator. ,And most importantly, it doesn't use a mega slot :)

Congratulations to Moose And Goose for winning VoTW 12 (Breloom) with your submission of Mega-Venusaur! Your post will be logged into the archive.

VoTW #13 - Mega-Gengar

Time for some real talk. Mega-Gengar is easily one of the most annoying Pokemon to deal with. Blessed with an amazing offensive typing, blistering base 130 speed, and an even better special attack stat of 170, Mega-Gengar is one of the fastest and hardest hitters of the metagame. However, what makes Mega-Gengar threatening more than anything would be the plethora of viable sets that it can run which can checking both Offensive and Defensive threats depending on the set.
Three attacks + Substitute (Offensive)
Status move + Hex (Bulky / Offensive)
Perish Trapper (Bulky / Stall)
SubDisable (Offensive)
All Out Attacker (Offensive)
Given all the versatility in sets which Mega-Gengar can provide, counters can be extremely limited. This versatility along with the sheer inability to scout Mega-Gengar at team preview also makes Mega-Gengar a top pick amongst many BSS players, fitting in on practically any playstyle as it can be easily tailored to account for your team's weaknesses. So, how do you deal with Mega-Gengar?

Submissions are open and will be closed in four days from now. Best of luck everyone!

Also, obviously, it doesn't mind getting burned or taking an hypnosis and can support the team in various other ways (sr, roar, offensive coverage).

Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Claw
- Shadow Sneak
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough

(Sorry for no sick picture of Mimikyu, I'm on mobile :( )

Mimikyu can OHKO offensive Gengar with Claw (+ Sneak ~50% of the time) or +2 Sneak, for defensive variants you need Z-SC iirc but 2 SC will also kill (maybe even Claw + Sneak).
-> If you play decent you can beat all Gengar sets!
You can decide between two items:
Focus Sash makes it a counter and it can 1v1 Mega Gyara which might come in to beat you (if you go for Sash I'd move the HP EVs to Spe).
Ghostium Z makes it a check (but it is still a counter to some sets) but imo it has more utility in general. The EVs should let it take a Jolly 252 Atk Mega Gyarados Crunch/Waterfall most of the time.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 12 Def / 4 SpA / 244 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Trick Room

244 HP EVs ensure that your HP stat is not divisible by sixteen. Maximized HP would be, which would be bad against status like poison or burn and other forms of passive damage.
244 SpD EVs reach the highest relevant defensive benchmark against Mega Gengar. Investing more doesn't improve Porygon2's ability to handle it. Investing less increases the chance of a Focus Blast 2HKO.
4 SpA EVs allow Shadow Ball to 2HKO all offensive Mega Gengar builds that only invest 4 EVs into 'bulk'.
The rest is dumped into the physical Defense to slightly increase the physical durability.
4 EVs go to Speed, because investing in an even number of stats is a waste of stat points at level 50.

Porygon2 doesn't lose offensive presence by being burned and it also is immune to Hex. +
Porygon2 has Trick Room to gain the speed advantage against potential Substitute, Disable or Destiny Bond Gengar. +
Porygon2 has reliable recovery to not be worn down easily by status. +
Porygon2 has Trace to copy Mega Gengar's Shadow Tag and avoid getting trapped by a potential Perish Song trapper. +
Trick Room allows Porygon2 to willingly run into a Destiny Bond trade and get a free switch into something like Mawile, which could completely turn the game's momentum on the head. +
You don't need a dedicated Trick Room core or team to abuse the move effectively. +
Porygon2 is not a niche pick and can fill many pivoting roles on a variety of teams, especially with Trace. +
Garchomp and Landorus-T are number two and number three of Gengar's most common partners. Trace Porygon2 can use their Abilities against them and easily kill them with Ice Beam. +

Focus Blast on Mega Gengar is not too common, but has a small chance to 2HKO. -

Offensive Calcs

4 SpA Porygon2 Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gengar-Mega: 68-80 (40.7 - 47.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
4 SpA Porygon2 Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar-Mega: 68-80 (50 - 58.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 SpA Porygon2 Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar-Mega: 68-80 (50.3 - 59.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Defensive Calcs

252 SpA Gengar-Mega Focus Blast vs. 244 HP / 244+ SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 84-100 (43.9 - 52.3%) -- 16% chance to 2HKO
Probably the worst case scenario. Not very likely, especially with the Focus Blast usage (~12%) and Accuracy (70%), but still possible. Special Defense drops are also a potential factor here (10%).

252 SpA Gengar-Mega Sludge Wave vs. 244 HP / 244+ SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 51-60 (26.7 - 31.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Gengar-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 244 HP / 244+ SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 48-57 (25.1 - 29.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

EDIT: Changed the nature from Sassy to Calm to not waste EVs and because it doesn't matter against Mega Gengar. This set is not trying to sweep with Trick Room so it doesn't really need to be as slow as possible anyway.

Looking for the alternative way to outspeed a fast Pokemon? Try the Prankster method.

Klefki @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Swagger
- Foul Play
- Thunder Wave
- Substitute

With Prankster Substitute, Klefki has a chance to scout Gengar's movepool and at least bypass taunt. Prankster Thunder Wave will cripple its wonderful speed instantly, and Swagger only adds insult to injury. Foul Play is the only attacking move on this set, hitting Gengar for supereffective damage. As the calc shows below, Foul Play is a likely KO once Gengar gets hit by confusion. Klefki's typing is fantastic, granting and immunity to Sludge Bomb and neutralities to Shadow Ball and Focus Blast.

Klefki is fairly bulky too as the calcs show:

252 SpA Gengar-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Klefki: 127-150 (39.9 - 47.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Gengar-Mega Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Klefki: 126-149 (39.6 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Klefki Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gengar-Mega: 104-124 (39.8 - 47.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 0 Atk Klefki Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gengar-Mega: 206-244 (78.9 - 93.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Rock Slide
- Poison Jab

252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Mega Gengar: 204-242 (122.1 - 144.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Mega Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 96-114 (52.1 - 61.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 SpA Mega Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 84-99 (45.6 - 53.8%) -- 39.5% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Mega Gengar Icy Wind vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 180-212 (97.8 - 115.2%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Gengar Icy Wind vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 144-172 (78.2 - 93.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

ScarfChomp is a difficult force to handle in BSS. Scarf is needed for Chomp to outspeed and OHKO the ghost with EQ, but it's just 2HKO in return, so it can come and take a hit (impossible with Icy Wind too).
ScarfChomp can manage all Mega-Gengar variants, from the bulkiest to the offensive one. If your opponent lure with a Sash Gengar, Garchomp only takes 93% from Icy Wind, and can retaliate thanks to Levitate being Cursed Body.

0 SpA Girafarig Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Gengar: 98-116 (72.5 - 85.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Girafarig Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Gengar: 102-120 (75.5 - 88.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Assault Vest + maximum special bulk allows you to switch in against ANY move Mega-Gengar throws at you, getting 3HKO'd at worst. Duel psychic STAB so that sub + disable doesn't beat you 1v1. Early Bird is great for waking up earlier and slapping the living shit out of Gengar.

I rest my case. Your move, viability.

Chandelure @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Infiltrator
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power [Ice] / Overheat

Chandelure works as a good Mega Gengar counter thanks to its Ghost stab in shadow ball and it's ability Infiltrator. By virtue of infiltrator chandelure breaks through Mega Gengar's substitutes and KO's. Timid max speed is to assure that M-Gengar is out-sped by Chandelure. Fire Blast is a nice stab for very nice damage, and Energy ball is great coverage alongside it. Overheat is to get a little more power out of an attack, which is especially helpful if you are using Flamethrower, but Hp ice is usually a better option to hit the plethora of 4x ice weak mons [Thanks Dogknees]. Additionally being a ghost type lets Chandelure switch out if need be.

Calcs:
Against Bulky variants:
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mega Gengar: 156-186 (93.4 - 111.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO [This will kill if Gengar has a sub up]
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. 188 HP / 4 SpD Mega Gengar: 152-182 (95.5 - 114.4%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
Against No bulk variants:
252 SpA Chandelure Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 186-222 (137.7 - 164.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive:
It dies to ghost moves from any variant.
252 SpA Mega Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chandelure: 51-60 (37.7 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Mega Gengar Icy Wind vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chandelure: 21-25 (15.5 - 18.5%) -- possible 6HKO

A similar build to the Lando I use in my main team heavily borrowed from a high ranked Japanese player. Lum Berry is used for hypnosis/wisp. Offensive Mega Gengar at best 3HKOs Lando with Shadow Ball while it always gets OHKO-ed from Earthquake including the bulky variants of it. Also even if burned Lando still 2HKOs while Hex never OHKOs. Calcs below :
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gengar-Mega: 186-218 (111.3 - 130.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 Atk burned Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gengar-Mega: 93-109 (68.8 - 80.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Gengar-Mega Hex (130 BP) vs. 244 HP / 228+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 117-138 (60 - 70.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after burn damage

This Lando usually is used as a safe lead whom can set up rocks , reduce speed on key pokemon or gain momentum through U-Turn while enduring a lot of special hits including modest choice specs psychic from Tapu Lele and strong ice attacks. I usually use it in conjunction with MegaGross slow U-Turning on the likes of Garchomp or the aforementioned Tapu Lele and gaining the upper hand.
All in all special defensive Lando-T is awesome :)

If your opponent lure with a Sash Gengar, Garchomp only takes 93% from Icy Wind, and can retaliate thanks to Levitate being Cursed Body.
speaking of scarf ground types that can't counter willo hex but can counter virtually every other variant and can check every megagenga...
Excadrill @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rock Slide
- Horn Drill

driller, like garchomp, dies to a willo on switch and a hex after genga lives the first earthquake from burned driller, and cannot counter focus blast genga, but as a check is airtight, and has an immunity to sludge bomb to boot, while being a pretty goshdarn good mon in general, being able to dispatch koko lele and mimikyu relatively reliably. try it out!
[20:46:51] Get Haxed Nerds: What's the worst thing that a MGar could do to AssVest Early Bird Girafarig?
[20:47:46] +dogknees: sub disable

OUR SAVIOUR (Girafarig) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Early Bird
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Psyshock
- Some weird filler
- Does this monster even need a 4th move?

252 SpA Mega Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Girafarig: 58-70 (32.7 - 39.5%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO

[Edit]: Changed trick to hp ice

Salamence @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 244 HP / 4 Atk / 4 Def / 228 SpD / 28 Spe
Careful Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Facade
- Roost
- Earthquake / Substitute / Double Edge

old one from gen 6, only loses to Icy Wind Gengars. loves getting wisped and has enough bulk to tank hits and set up. If you don't get burned then just OHKO with EQ (otherwise Facade bops it).

Landorus-Therian(Lum Berry)
Ability : Intimidate
EVs : 244 Hp / 36 Def / 228 SpD
Careful Nature

Earthquake
U-Turn
Rock Tomb
Stealth Rock

252 SpA Gengar-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 244 HP / 228+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 72-85 (36.9 - 43.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

All in all special defensive Lando-T is awesome :)

cant say's Mega-Salamence.
I love how this set can actually lure in Mega-Gengar and take advantage of wisp, which would obviously usually be a huge hindrance for physical attackers. Creative and effective, I like it a lot

I think this is going to be a close vote, as everyone seems to be liking each other's counters very much. My vote goes to NOVED's Alolan-Muk. A classic pursuit trapper that resists both of Gengar's STABs. It may not be a threat to the rest of the team, and it doesn't have the best ability, but it is the best way to keep Gengar in checkmate, especially with Trick Room up.

I'm going to vote for Solerme's Tyranitar. This week has a ton of solid options for beating Mega Gengar, but Ttar feels like the most reliable check to any gengar variant. Mainly because of the fact that after T-tar beats Gengar it is not crippled nearly as much as most of the counters this week can be (t-tar doesn't mind burns as much as other physical attackers and Gengar really only damages it via focus blast). Not to mention it looks like it is one of the few mons on the list that can actually reliably beat Gengar if it already has a substitute up.
