Virizion (Substitute + 3 Attacks) [QC 0/3]

uh i haven't been in here for a while and i'm a bit fuzzy on the process so sorry if i screw something up

the ou analysis lied about the EV spread on the Work Up set so i have to redo calcs, PRETTY SURE nothing changed except the Starmie OHKO and SLIGHT SLIGHT SLIGHT changes in chances to OHKO / 2HKO :/

[SET]
name: Substitute + 3 Attacks
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Giga Drain
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Hidden Power Ice / Stone Edge
item: Life Orb
ability: Justified
nature: Hasty / Naive
evs: 92 Atk / 164 SpA / 252 Spe

  • Set transforms Virizion from an easily-revenged, difficult-to-set-up sweeper to a mixed attacking check to many offensive and defensive threats with powerful STABs and several key unique resistances, high speed, and good special bulk even when uninvested
  • Can switch in and force things like bulky waters, Hippowdon, Blissey, Tyranitar, Salamence, Garchomp, both Landorus varients, Gliscor, and Choice-locked Terrakion out and set up a Substitute
  • Giga Drain lets Virizion 2HKO most bulky waters (except Specially Defensive Jellicent and Tentacruel) while tanking weak Ice Beams, as well as Tyranitar, has a 84.38% chance to 2HKO even specially defensive Hippowdon after Stealth Rock, and allows recovery from Substitute and Life Orb recoil
  • Close Combat allows Virizion to OHKO Blissey, Tyranitar, Mamoswine, and Magnezone, can 2HKO Ferrothorn and 0 / 0 Jirachi with Stealth Rock, and doesn't suffer from Focus Blast's crippling accuracy
  • Hidden Power Ice allows Virizion to OHKO Gliscor, Landorus, Landorus-T, Garchomp, Salamence, Thunderus-T, OHKOs offensive Dragonite and 2HKOs offensive Venusaur after Stealth Rock, and dents Lati@s
  • Stone Edge can be used to OHKO Volcarona and can dent Gengar, Gyarados, and Salamence, but losing the ability to lure Dragons, genies, and Gliscor is painful

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Max speed allows Virizion to speed tie with Terrakion, Keldeo, and Infernape, and outspeed Landorus, Thunderus-T, Garchomp, and base 100s like Salamence and Jirachi
  • 164 SpA allows Virizion to OHKO 0/4 Starmie after Stealth Rock, rest put into Attack to power up Close Combat
  • Life Orb necessary, as Virizion can't boost, to gain the power to achieve many of its 2HKOs, and powers up Giga Drain recovery as well
  • Virizion appreciates entry hazards even more with this set, since it lacks the ability to boost its offences, especially Stealth Rock against Flying- and Fire-types
  • Without a Substitute, Virizion is prone to being revenge killed by strong priority users like Mamoswine and Scizor
  • Without boosting moves Virizion is unable to punch through tanks it lacks super effective coverage against, such as Skarmory, Reuniclus, defensive Jirachi, and Tentacruel
  • Toxicroak resists both STABs and Stone Edge and hits back hard with Ice Punch
  • Heatran can deal with bulky steel types and Toxicroak with STAB Fire Blast, resists Flying, Fire, Ice, and Poison, and set up Stealth Rock to help Virizion secure 2HKOs while Virizion takes Ground- and Water-type moves for it and deals with Tyranitar and Blissey
  • Rotom-W resists Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-type moves and can deal with Fire-types and Flying-types, as well as Tentacruel and Metagross, while Virizion can absorb Grass moves and lure Dragon-types that resist Rotom-W's STABs and Ground-types that neuter its Volt Switch
  • Magnezone resists Flying, Ice, and Poison, and can trap and kill Steel-types that aren't weak to Close Combat, such as Scizor, Forretress, and Skarmory, as well as Tentacruel, while Virizion takes Ground-type moves for it
  • A fully-special set can be run to get a little more power out of Giga Drain at the cost of losing the ability to OHKO Blissey, but Focus Blast's accuracy is horrendous
  • Virizion can run Hidden Power Fire in its last slot to lure in Scizor, but it loses a lot of coverage and can't speed tie with other 108 pokemon like Terrakion and Keldeo.
  • If you don't want to bother with speed ties, you can run 208 Speed evs to outpace Jolly Garchomp and use the rest to juice up Virizion's offenses. Investing in SpA gives you an 81.25% chance to OHKO bulky Starmie with Giga Drain and a 56.25% to 2HKO specially defensive Jellicent, as well as a
86.72% chance to 2HKO 60 / 0 Celebi after Stealth Rock with Hidden Power Ice, while investing in Attack gives a 87.5% chance to OHKO 252 / 136 Kyurem-B after Stealth Rock damage

This set looks kinda weird; virizion has 90 base mixed offenses, and it doesn't exactly nuke the tier, AND it's not as frail as to warrant a substitute set. In my opinion, the whole premise of the set is wrong.

Substitute is there to ease prediction, guarantee that Virizion has enough time to get the 2HKO against stuff it outspeeds, and provides insurance against Close Combat defense drops when revenge killers come in. It's also great insurance against Scald burns, especially since Virizion's special defense means it'll take three or four Scalds for most bulky waters to take down a sub. All of the setup sweeper sets for Virizion never seem to get a sweep off. The CM and Work Up sets take multiple boosts (and Focus Blast sucks) and the SD can't get enough OHKOs to sweep and has no Giga Drain regen.

Virizion isn't the star of the show. Bad physical bulk, Close Combat drops, no access to priority or speed boosting with pretty-good-but-not-great speed, and Focus Blast's stupidness, when combined, make Virizion sweeps few and far between.

It's there for its resistances and Special Defense, its good STABs, and its nice speed, which lets it to come in on a variety of stuff that nobody else can and force it out. The sets in the analysis are all for late-game cleaning, which waste Virizion's resistances and pale in comparison to the many, many other late-game cleaners out there that have a much smaller list of things that can stop a sweep cold.

Also, for what it's worth, slow bulky tanks and walls that this Virizion has trouble with are set up on and plowed through or heavily dented by the boosting sweeper sets.

If you're really going to try this, it needs Leftovers. Otherwise there's no way it will happen.
So many of the 2HKOs it gets are just barely there with Life Orb and Stealth Rock. Leftovers make it a punching bag. And Giga Drain recovery really does help. There IS a defensive set in Other Options already, but it just seems like a waste of Virizion's speed and attacking power. Virizion isn't just a specially-defensive grass type. It does have some great special bulk and a unique set of resistances, but it also sits on a nice speed tier and has workable offenses off nearly-unique STAB combination.

Breloom can play a pivot role too with Spore and Toxic Orb and Leech Seed, and 130 base attack is nice, but it just doesn't have the raw specially defensive bulk or speed that Virizion does and is heavily reliant on Spore to deal with the stuff that it can't hurt with its STABs, and there are a lot of those, since defensive sets don't have Mach Punch and barely invest in that pathetic 70 Base Speed, and you can't invest in that nice Attack because it needs all the help it can get defensively. Poison Heal Breloom is used for status sponging and Spore. Technician Breloom is for strong priority, offensive Grass moves, and Spore. It has to choose. Virizion, as a pivot, can actually take hits, has decent recovery in Giga Drain, dish the damage back out, and isn't a half-bad cleaner off 108 Speed Close Combat spam. It's decent at everything at the same time, and I think it definitely has its own unique and useful niche in OU. I know I used this set because no form of Breloom (and no form of Virizion) could be offensive and defensive at the same time, while keeping up momentum, instead of attempting to set up and getting shut down immediately.

And I didn't even talk about all the 4x Ice weak stuff it outspeeds and OHKOs that every OU team would love to get out of the way.

I don't like this set. Virizion is already lacking power even with boosting moves and full investment. I know you cited that Substitute eases prediction, but it's not like Virizion was prediction heavy in the first place. It was pretty much 1) use Calm Mind, 2) use attack. If your opponent predicts your attack, just switch to another attack that works against said target. Since Leftovers Furthermore, another key reason we removed the old Work Up set was that it dropped one of Virizion's defenses, which you really don't want. You don't want to drop physical defense because you get destroyed by stuff like CB Scizor, and if you drop SpD, you're compromising what Virizion does best - tank special hits. With Substitute, you're eating at even more of Virizion's defenses.

I know I used this set because no form of Breloom (and no form of Virizion) could be offensive and defensive at the same time, while keeping up momentum, instead of attempting to set up and getting shut down immediately.
What are you getting shut down by? If you're talking Calm Mind and getting stopped by Jirachi, you still fail to 2HKO 252 HP Jirachi with Close Combat. You beat Blissey more easily now, but now you're losing to Skarmory, Scizor and Forretress. You can pretty much use Calm Mind over this and get the same kind of results. Substitute does not help much, neither does going mixed. I swear the only reason people run mixed Virizion is because they hate using Focus Blast. This may be so, but you need to remember by running mixed you're dropping a whole bunch of other benefits that Virizion would otherwise have if you were ready to make a gamble with Focus Blast.
