Why does your Voodoom have 252 SpA when it doesn't have any direct attacks whatsoever? I think you meant speed, as you used Jolly.

SubBulkUp has worked really well for me too...

My current favourite way to use Voodoom, though, is just to abuse Volt Absorb. Basically, show him early, take a bit of damage, then go out and bring in Gyarados/Togekiss. Guess what? Both of these guys can basically set up much more easily when the opponent thinks I'm going to switch over and heal up - in fact, he generally won't try a SE Thunderbolt unless he literally has to - particularly since the most common Gyarados and Togekiss counters, Rotom-A and Zapdos, get so totally screwed over.
Abilities like Volt Absorb just make prediction so impossible for the other guy:)

Hey everyone! I just have a few initial comments about how my own play-testing has gone so far (I'm currently #25 on the ladder, but it's a mix of barely playing and playing the same people over and over).

I'd just like to share something I've been using to pretty decent success in playtesting. I am currently using this Special Defensive Shaymin to great effect:

Shaymin @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EV's: 252 HP / 220 SpD / 36 Spe
Nature: Calm
Moveset:
- Leech Seed
- Toxic
- Grass Knot
- Aromatherapy / Rest

It's been really, really good at sponging Special Attacks, and handles MixDoom easily (if Voodoom gets Seeded, Aura Sphere does around 15-20% damage to it after recovery). Togekiss does not want to switch in on Leech Seed or Toxic, and it cannot 2HKO Shaymin with an unboosted Air Slash while Shaymin still out-speeds it. Natural Cure + Aromatherapy/Rest allows it to absorb TWave and Toxic with ease. Zapdos' Heat Wave does not 2HKO. It needs to watch out for Substitute variants of Zapdos and Jolteon, since Grass Knot does not break subs. Bet you wish Voodoom had Ice Beam now, don't you? :P

I think that as far as counters to the actual pairing go, Jirachi really kind of slipped out of our minds it seems, as it really just wrecks this core. Once you eliminate Zapdos / Jolteon / Heatran, it just wrecks Togekiss and Voodoom, especially if it has Scarf / Body Slam. Magnezone seems to be a good partner for the pair overall, but I think that was kind of expected anyway.

Vacuum Wave is getting some popularity, as it ironically allows you to beat opposing Voodoom (especially after a Nasty Pass) with ease.

SubSplit is somewhat underwhelming, as I found that Voodoom really just can't pull it off like Gengar can (vulnerability to Toxic hurts bad). TauntSplit is interesting too, although TauntSplit Gengar might be just as good too by extension. Not sure.

That's it for now. I'll be doing more testing with new things throughout the week. So far, so good!

Well, Voodoom has been working pretty nicely for me as a lead with Taunt, Dark Pulse and Vaccum Wave access. I don't bother with Kiss though, but from what i've played with other teams using the core, the two are rather vulnerable to Toxic, though that could just mean Kiss needs to woman up and run Heal Bell. I am surprised by the lack of Gyarados I've seen throughout the ladder, as with electric attacks being utterly tarnished by Voodom and Jolteon jump, it seems this would be his area to shine. Maybe I'm just on the ladder at bad times! :D Will keep testing ofcourse, but my initial feel is that Togekiss is too difficult a Pokemon to partner without making said partner almost nonreliant upon Togekiss itself. Given that Voodoom doesn't attract any attack Togekiss can handle, the partnership seems very tilted.

I've been using a set of.
Voodoom @ Lefties
252 Spe / 252 SpA
Sub
Aura Sphere
Toxic
HP Ghost

The attacking moves give good neutral coverage and toxic completely ruins specially defensive Zapdos which seems to be the most used switch in.

are you kidding, the only thing you miss on is heracross and toxicroak i think, plus dark pulse is STAB making it 120 BP vs pathetic 70 BP of hp ghost.

theres 0 reason to use hp ghost over dark pulse

Well with HP ghost I hit everything. Dark Pulse doesn't have as good offensive synergy.
HP Ghost hits Heracross and Toxicroak for 70 BP, while Aura Sphere hits for 67.5. Everything else in the game is hit harder by Aura Sphere or Dark Pulse. It's hardcore not worth it to run HP Ghost just for 2.5 extra damage against Heracross and Toxicroak.

Hm, it would seem that Voodoom has little reason to run HP at all. Voodoom's most common counters are Flying types (with the second most common being Voodoom himself) and Doom has access to Rock Slide. Otherwise it has access to at leas one move to cover all of it's type weaknesses, all viable choices over HP too.... to my knowledge anyway.

tehy

Banned deucer.
Question?

If doom has a nasty plot and agility, what can absorb one attack or outspeed him?

Hazers/Phazers FTW!

Seriously, every team should have one for this reason alone (boosting). Skarm works great because it has access to both Roar and Whirlwind and can set up Spikes/Stealth Rocks.

Also woks great on anything hiding behind a sub.

Edit: Though in the case of Doom I'd go something more specially defensive.

But rock slide / stone edge is psysically based, even after a bulk up it won't be doing much damage. Then you gotta ask yourself, why not just use infernape/lucario/machamp if you want bulk up/swords dance user.

Machamp is arguably a better Bulk Up user, but there are a lot of things which make Voodoom potentially a superior choice.

Machamp gets much more attack and more bulk, basically, plus an incredible ability paired with Dynamic Punch (or Guts which is pretty nice too).

Voodoom has much much more speed and Baton Pass, but also since he hits harder on the special side the other guy's hardly going to bring in a Hippowdon or something until you have a boost. Plus, most of Voodoom's counters hate being hit by his physical moves.

So yeah, its basically power+confusion+bulk versus speed+baton pass+versatile
Both can fit pretty well on a team.

Lucario and Infernape are pretty terrible at Bulk Up. Even with one boost they still die pretty easily to physical attacks, and basically anything which hits hard on the special side and can outspeed/survive one turn will OHKO no probs. This includes a pretty vast number of pokemon.

I may be in the minority on this, but I think we spent so much time figuring out ways that Voodoom would cover all of Togekisses downfalls that we forgot to make it so that Togekiss could do the same for Voodoom.
I mean, that's just from me, but...any thoughts?

Togekiss screws over the Fighting-types that Voodoom has coming in on him - Lucario and Machamp being the big ones. Clearly Kiss has trouble coming in immediately, but she can still be very useful.

Kiss also provides paralysis support.

So far, I've made it a point not to use Voodoom with Togekiss just to see how well he gels with other pokemon. The only set that I've tried so far is the BUDoom set from the analysis with Baton Pass, so I will simply share my thoughts on this.

First off, I've never really managed to do any massive sweeping with it unless someone gifted me 2 or more BU's. It's proven to be more of a very good glue pokemon to not only maintain offensive momentum but also pass some boosts along the way.

It gels ridiculously well with an AgiPass Zapdos. First off, there are very few things that can stop a Zapdos from passing Agility if I get a good switch in (PHazing Swampert or Hippowdon might work). If going straight to Voodoom has not been possible, I have used Vaporeon as a pivot (to draw tbolts, pass a sub, or both).

Once in, with +2 Spd, Voodoom has very few things on the special side that can threaten it directly. Usually it forces a switch, which in turn grants a free Bulk Up. After Bulk Up, Starmie, opposing Voodoom, and Scarf Rotom are all outsped and OHKO'd with Night Slash or Low Kick. Scarf Togekiss, though I've faced only one, is easily escaped via Baton Pass. After BU, Scizor's bullet punch can be survived comfortably as I pass the stat or KO with Low Kick if Scizor has prior damage. The only pokemon that can really ruin the fun here is Skarmory, as it can Whirlwind without taking much damage from Low Kick. Hippowdon could do the same in theory, but I've yet to face one.

BUDoom seems to have a lot of options for teammates. So far, I've used CB Dragonite and SD LO Heracross as recipients. Both have worked nicely. If I am passing an agility along with the BU, then the opponent is in for some serious pain. +1 CB Outrage at +2 speed is not easy to stop, and a +2 speed Heracross with any sort of boost can win the whole game.

Speaking of which, I must say that the advent of Voodoom has really helped Heracross' case. Sadly, I'm quite certain that my favorite bug will again fade to obscurity once playtesting ends, but right now he's simply brilliant. I have won a fair number of matches in exactly this sequence:

  • Switch Zapdos in safely
  • Agility as opponent switches to Voodoom (seriously, why would anyone do this?)
  • BP to Heracross. If enemy Voodoom attacks, I'm in the money. If they taunt, well... I can still score a hit at least.
  • If not taunted, SD and proceed to sweep until taken out by a priority move or there are no more pokemon left (or a Mega- or Stone Miss).
Definitely, the above can be easily stopped, but using Voodoom is NOT THE WAY to do it! Honestly speaking, Voodoom should NOT be switching into Zapdos, ever. It cannot threaten an OHKO, risks getting OHKO'd by HP Flying, and risks giving away these free Agi boosts that can cost you the whole game.

All in all, BUDoom has been a fantastic team player, gelling beautifully with AgiPass Zapdos.

EDIT (@ SJCrew):
I agree that Voodoom does not feel the least bit lacking without Togekiss support. In fact, Togekiss has been one of the least commonly seen pokemon during my time playtesting.

Looks like Voodoom is just another sweeper to me. No doubt he can be very useful to Togekiss with Twave, getting rid of TTar, and abating its fear of Electric moves, but there are better things you could be using than Togekiss and I wouldn't mind tossing him on any team of mine as my token Fighting type.

Dark/Fighting is such good coverage and with such a competent offensive Pokemon to take advantage of it, I had no doubt in my mind he'd function well as a standalone - which is a problem because we wanted him to help Togekiss. I think we misstepped right out of the gate when we decided he'd be a standard sweeper, since Togekiss also had defensive shortcomings to account for that Voodoom simply can't cover. Focusing on overpowering its counters was not the way to go.

I've been using this;
Voodoom @ Choice Specs
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Aura Sphere
Dark Pulse
Phychic
HP Ice
Hits like a beast, with prediction can take out lots of pokemon.

I really don't like the idea of this set. Voodoom's biggest asset is its insane coverage, which you are essentially taken away for a Specs 105 SpA Pokemon. I'm not saying it isn't powerful, but its taking away that amazing perfect neutral coverage (bar 2 Pokemon) with just its STAB, for .2x more power than Life Orb gives it.

SJCrew said:

Actually, as I predicted way back when Fighting-type made primary typing, Zapdos + Voodoom is an immensely potent and successful attacking pair. Togekiss with Voodoom is underwhelming except in one case, and that's only when you are Baton Passing NP. Outside of that, I'd never use Togekiss. Zapdos, however, has nearly perfect defensive type coverage with Voodoom (with Voodoom only missing the Ice-type resist for Zapdos) and they all check each other's responses immaculately. Outside of that natural defensive coverage, they also have potent offensive synergy with their immense offensive presence and ability to sweep weakened teams once you've gone back and forth enough.

If anything, I'm going to say that we inadvertently succeeded in the concept, but did so with a Pokemon we didn't intend to do so with. Some people might look at that as a failure, but honestly, the point of CAP is to learn from what we make, and if we learn about offensive cores from Voodoom, despite that it's with Zapdos, we still dun' good.

SubPunchSplit may be a good set.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure DJD didn't win the sprite poll so.... what happened to Voodoom's credits?
