Voodoom is live on the CAP Server!

The inaugural battle was fought between Deck Knight (the CAP 11 Topic Leader) and Rising Dusk (the Stat Spread creator), both of whom were instrumental in shaping almost all competitive aspects of our strange and mysterious new CAP Pokemon. It was an up and down battle on both sides, and was great fun to watch. Deck Knight prevailed, winning 1-0 -- and a perfectly fitting ending with Togekiss as the last pokemon standing. Congratulations to both combatants on one of the best inaugural battles in CAP history!

So, let's get on with the playtesting!

The ladder has been reset and renamed to "Playtest", and all the other CAP pokemon have been removed. So for the next two weeks Voodoom will have our undivided attention. At the conclusion of the testing period, the top-rated battler will win the custom title of "CAP Playtesting Champion"!

If you want reference information on Voodoom-- check out Voodoom's dex page on the CAP Website. It has all you need to know about our battling voodoo doll. We also have a preliminary analysis to help battlers looking to get an idea of how Voodoom might be able to be used effectively. If you need help connecting to the CAP server, or downloading the CAP sprites -- check out the CAP Server Connection Guide. Join in with fellow CAP battlers on the server and let's put Voodoom to the test!

This thread will serve as home base for all playtesting results and comments. If you post battle logs or long excerpts, please use hide tags, or code tags please.

Yeah, it was a fun battle with mistakes and awesome stuff from both sides. Great start to the playtest, if you ask me. The battle log is in the hidden tag below for anyone who is interested, and our post-battle commentary is in the hidden tag just below that.

Commentary
elevator music: yeah
reachzero: for the flinch chance
elevator music: I was thinking that in my head
MSB has left the room.
macle: i was betting on rd
Deck Knight: Sweatin' Bullets
Rising_Dusk: He had Aura Sphere though
Rising_Dusk: Not sure why he kept using Dark Pulse.
reachzero: you
reachzero: I mean
reachzero: at the end
Deck Knight: I did not have Aura Sphere
DougJustDoug: That was a roller-coaster battle
reachzero: Rising_Dusk
reachzero: should have switched
Rising_Dusk: Aura Sphere hits Kiss harder than DPulse though.
Deck Knight: I have trolled Dusk with the set I posted in the topic.
reachzero: to Heatran
Rising_Dusk: But maybe flinch hax, yes, lol.
DougJustDoug: Big flinch on Rachi there at the end
Deck Knight: Good thing I won >_>
Deck Knight: Eh, Kiss would have just Aura Sphered anyway, he'd have needed a Dpulse flinch on Kiss to

win.
elevator music: yeah
Rising_Dusk: Yeah, better than a 0% chance I guess.
elevator music: but thats better than just hoping for crit
Rising_Dusk: Although you should've just aura sphered my Voodoom.
elevator music has left the room.
Rising_Dusk: And won with Togekiss+Voodoom left.
Rising_Dusk: That would've been nice. :)
capefeather: yeah that would have been pretty epic
Deck Knight: I say Voodoom made Kiss an offensive threat with para support >_>
Deck Knight: That'sa my story
capefeather: but honestly this fulfilled exactly what i saw togedoom doing
Rising_Dusk: I say if I had actually gone through with using Heracross I would've maimed your team. :P
Deck Knight: Gyarados yum :-D
Rising_Dusk: I had Zapdos!
Deck Knight: Zapdos too weak for Voodoom :-D
capefeather: obviously he had eq / se / bounce
capefeather: :P
Deck Knight: Nah, I figured between Doom and Jolteon Zapdos wasn't a huge problem.
DougJustDoug: Bounce was an interesting call with your Gyar DK
Rising_Dusk: I ALMOST got it off
Deck Knight: Voodoom everywhere.
Rising_Dusk: I was one hot step from getting the NP to Voodoom.
Rising_Dusk: With a Scarf.
Rising_Dusk: But the Air Slash would've KOd. :(
capefeather: yup
Rising_Dusk: That was my ultimate goal.
Rising_Dusk: Agili+NP Pass to Voodoom.
Deck Knight: Out teams were similar, Togekiss/Voodoom/mon that ends in "dos"
Rising_Dusk: Fortunately you didn't use Tyranitar, lawl.
Rising_Dusk: Or Dragonite.
Rising_Dusk: I ran Ice Punch on Jirachi for Toge/Nite
Rising_Dusk: Iron Head for TTar.
Rising_Dusk: But oof, that's all I had.
DougJustDoug: I liked the battle. One of closest inaugurals we've ever had.
Rising_Dusk: Yeah that was a blast.
DougJustDoug: Too often the first battle is a runaway
Rising_Dusk: I'm glad we both tried something crazy.
DougJustDoug: Togekiss as last pokemon standing is kinda cool for the concept...
Rising_Dusk: Yeah!
Rising_Dusk: I made a mistake trying to baton pass my NP.
Rising_Dusk: I could've roosted off the aura sphere and setup on his Togekiss.
Deck Knight: Err
Deck Knight: Roost on Aura Sphere?
Rising_Dusk: But I really wanted to do it.
Deck Knight: Considering my Kiss was slower....
Rising_Dusk: Well I figured you were expecting the pass and would air slash!
Rising_Dusk: My move wasn't the logical one.
Deck Knight: I figured you were going to pass to something that would resist Air Slash
Deck Knight: SO I used Aura Sphere instead
Rising_Dusk: You knew my whole team! Lol. xD
-Steel has entered the room.
reachzero has left the room.
-Steel has left the room.
Deck Knight: TBH I should have DD'd with Gyara again before Bounce since Cune's HP Elec couldn't 2HKO,

(I moved SpD from standard Bulkydos)
Rising_Dusk: Yeah, mad SpD investment.
Rising_Dusk: And I was using a bulky spread without LO either.
Deck Knight: If Gyara got through Cune you'd have been so screwed lol
Housefantastic has entered the room.
Housefantastic has left the room.
Rising_Dusk: At +2? Yeah.
Rising_Dusk: At +1, not so much.
Deck Knight: It was at +2/+4 then lol
Deck Knight: If I DD"f anyway
Rising_Dusk: Oh yeah, haha, agility.
Rising_Dusk: SubPass Jolteon was cool.
Deck Knight: I was like "what if I passed Bulk Up and Agility to Gyara so I could DD...."
Deck Knight: Jolly Gyara anyway, just in case there were Jolteon about.
Rising_Dusk: Aye.
Deck Knight: ALthough I thought CUne was going to Roar so I just attacked.
Rising_Dusk: To be fair, for a Voodoom metagame, I had not nearly enough Fighting resists.
Deck Knight: That's why the last move was Bounce, in case I needed to evade Roar.
Rising_Dusk: I wanted to run Rotom-A to spite Togekiss.
Rising_Dusk: Lol.
DougJustDoug: I figured you were gonna DD again
Rising_Dusk: I like how I missed 2 Fire Blasts early game.
Deck Knight: Then I missed Zen Headbutt and was critted.
Rising_Dusk: And got flinch haxed by Voodoom at the end, lol.
Deck Knight: I should have just blown up on the stupid thing
DougJustDoug: Yeah, you overcame some big hax
Rising_Dusk: Was that a ColburZelf?
Deck Knight: Yeah
Rising_Dusk: Looked like it to me.
Rising_Dusk: Yeah.
Deck Knight: LeadChamps are notorious in inaugural battles.
Rising_Dusk: I considered Machamp.
Rising_Dusk: But I figured it was redundant with Voodoom.
Deck Knight: Especially ones with Guts and Dynamicpunch
ookiecookie has left the room.
Rising_Dusk: And I wanted something to cover opposing Heatran and stuff.
Rising_Dusk: Idk, lol.
Rising_Dusk: I was expecting you to use like lead Metagross or something.
Rising_Dusk: I almost did.
Deck Knight: Also I wanted to use the Full Support set I posted in pre-playtesting just to troll you if

I won >_>
Rising_Dusk: Amusingly, it trolled me damned well
Rising_Dusk: :P
Rising_Dusk: It's still AC material, IMO, but we'll see what playtesting says!
Deck Knight: It currently has a perfect record.
Deck Knight: Therefore I am retiring it.
Rising_Dusk: Ahaha.
Rising_Dusk: Well, shall we?
Rising_Dusk: I'll post this log in the playtest thread for amusement.
Deck Knight: Sure.
Rising_Dusk: GG
Deck Knight: Once Doug gets the playtest thread up
Deck Knight: GG

((In retrospect and after reviewing the log, it seems as though he didn't have Aura Sphere on Voodoom! I could've totally won the match if I had noticed and sent out my own Voodoom into his, but that's how the cookie crumbles. GG!))

Anyway, here's to another round of playtest, everyone!

Been playtesting since this morning and I can say that ZapDoomKiss is a pretty powerful trio. BP Zapdos seems to be everywhere.

Very effective Late gema cleaner set IMO:
Voodoom:
Nature: Timid
Ability: Volt Absorb
Item: Life Orb
EVs:
240 Speed (Outruns +speed nature Aerodactyl and Crobat, nothing notable is outrun with 252)
252 Special Atack (Hits as hard as possible)
16 Defence (Already has 321 HP which is a good life orb number, and is probably more scared of Physical)
Moves:
Aura Sphere (Stab)
Dark Pulse (Stab)
Hidden Power (I chose Grass for swampert, although rock would work well IMO for Zapdos and Slightly better Vs. Kiss)
Vacuum Wave (does 56.1% - 66% Vs. Neutral nature no Special defence voodoom, 61.7% - 72.9% Vs. Naive, and priority is great in general)

Been testing out a trick Macho Brace Rotom-H which has been working decently so far, as it can switch in onto Togekiss and then Tricks a Macho Brace onto a predicted Voodoom switch, which pretty much cripples Offensive Voodoom.

Sure it's gimmicky, but a lot of the common stuff on the ladder won't like to take a Macho Brace either. Togekiss, Heracross, Starmie and Zapdos all hate Macho Brace as well.

Did someone say ZapDoomKiss?
Yeah, I've been using that and getting great results just running BPass on all three and just accumulating boosts. I normally pass an Agility first, after which I can get off a Baton Pass from all of them before their counters attack. Between them they can handle almost any threat in the metagame.

The problem is everyone else is using them. Zapdos, by the way, is potentially going to benefit more than the predicted "collateral damage" like Gyarados due to its main few switch ins, Tyranitar and Rotom-A for instance, being easily handled.

:D Voodoom was really fun to use and I love how Volt Absorb can surprise people. I still have a BP/Bulk Up set I have to test later, but over all I think Voodoom is really cool and veratile :) .

Sorry, I didn't save any of my logs :( .

I tried just DoomKiss and I was thoroughly underwhelmed, though I never really play with BP teams. It's a lot of work for a little more reward than if you just attacked those turns. So, currently I'm trying out some other cool things!

I will say that Scizor is excellent. You know how Voodoom can't KO Scizor with Aura Sphere? SD in his face and KO with Bullet Punch, then proceed to survive Starmie's attacks and KO it too. I'm using Voodoom as my Zapdos/Rotom-A check and the team is finally clicking.

I havent paid much attention to this but read over the analysis surprised no mention of Choice Specs set?

Aura Sphere / Dark Pulse / HP Rock or Psychic / Vacuum Wave looks like just a faster Lucario with more switch-in opportunities.

I must say, that SubSplit Voodoom is absolutely amazing. It has pretty much everything Gengar wishes it had (Bulk, Aura Sphere, good dual-STAB). Surprisingly, I'm not using Togekiss with it just because I want to be different, so I'm pairing Gyarados and Zapdos with it. I should also mention Voodoom is probably one of the coolest Tyranitar counters ever (Fuck off Machamp), only incapable of switching into Superpower. Give the thing some Spikes support, and it runs through teams easily.

The good thing about Voodoom is that he doesn't feel all that broken either. He has the balance of being awesome while being manageable at the same time.

I don't know how DoomKiss was underwhelming for you. It works amazingly well with Jolteon passing Agility and subs. I've swept whole teams with it, and even reached #3 on the Playtest leaderboard, though I doubt it'll stay like that for long. DoomKiss is a really consistent winning core for me at least. I've been running an all out attacker Voodoom using Dark Pulse, Aura sphere, Vacuum Wave, and Psychic.

You're misunderstanding what I mean by DoomKiss. I mean just Togekiss + Voodoom as a singular pair, not with Zapdos or Jolteon support. I had my team set up so that everyone set up round Voodoom, with Togekiss being the final piece, passing Nasty Plots and Wishes. It was thoroughly underwhelming. I didn't build my team around Baton Passing, which is what it seems to me you have to do to get DoomKiss to work.

The original team was something like Iron Ball Metagross, SD Scizor, Voodoom, Togekiss, Starmie, and some random member or something. However that didn't really work at all. Currently the team is this:

Heatran (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Atk/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Hasty nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Explosion
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock
---
Metagross @ Iron Ball
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 236 HP/252 Atk/20 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Trick
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Explosion
---
Scizor (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP/252 Atk/8 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Bug Bite
- Superpower
---
Zapdos @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Roost
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Heat Wave
---
Starmie @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Thunderbolt
---
Voodoom (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Def/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Aura Sphere
- Dark Pulse
- Taunt
- Pain Split
---

Reach recommended that Voodoom set and I haven't really tried it but I never really used HP Ice/Baton Pass which were the two moves I had before.

Specially Defensive Skarmory + Voodoom completely annihilates the metagame. Phazer is nice to have as well.

rest / talk gyarados has been holding my teams together. careful and a bit of special defense investment makes him the best doom counter. without roar though, he loses to bulk up :C

I have been having quite a bit of success with DoomRaptor. Well, not "quite a bit". I've only played like 10 games. Still...

Voodoom is fully capable of dispatching Staraptor's primary counters in Rotom and Zapdos, and physical flying is such a fantastic attacking type that Staraptor can eat most teams alive with its LO set after those two are gone, especially since if you predict right you can easily 2hko all these specially defensive Skarmory running around (although they need to be Careful, Impish loses you the kill unless you have around 15% in residual damage on it). Brave Bird hits way harder than Togekiss' Air Slash too, which is definitely a plus.

Makes you a bit vulnerable to Starmie though :P

But yeah Specially Defensive Skarmory can't afford to run Impish really seeing as Careful takes about 55% from Gengar's Focus Blast and Voodoom's Aura Sphere.

Definitely have to test that Raptor. Were you using SubRoost?

Gyarados is something else I really need to test as Voodoom can sponge Rock and Electric, walls Rotom and takes out other stuff like Celebi pretty nicely too. It could even Baton Pass Bulk Ups...

I tried that w/ a CurseLax to try and ditch the drops in speed (not like it matters) and get a couple boosts ahead when he switches in. I liked the result but didn't get to play with it alot because of connection issues. Voodoom should be able to thoroughly dispose of any CurseLax counters though. I'll play with the idea more later.

Before I go out and make a team with Voodoom, I'm fighting in the ladder with my normal team to see how it works best. Honestly, Voodoom has yet to give me any serious trouble.

Lol, that's funny because there were more than a few times when I went "Oh F***! Voodoom! D: "

Who I'm hoping will be a little less common after the playtesting because with Aura Sphere it destroys my CurseLax :'( . Easy fix though...... Azelf go BOOM!

LO Aerodactyl looked nice in theory as I was having trouble with all the birds/gyara. Stone Edge OHKOs all Togekiss without defense EVs, and all Zapdos that arent physically defensive (who still fall with SR damage). Aerial Ace is pitiful but it grabs 82.9% - 97.8% on offensive Voodooms, so a pretty solid chance to KO considering the possibility of rocks and LO recoil. Always fun for late game cleaning and has been working alright, havent found the perfect partners for him yet though.

Since tennisace brought it up, let me explain my motivation on trying TauntSplit over SubSplit. Contra shrang, Gengar does the SubSplit set far better than Voodoom does, because Voodoom wishes it had Gengar's key attributes of being immune to Seismic Toss and Toxic--SubSplit Voodom requires a lot more work/luck to beat Blissey than SubSplit Gengar does. SubSplit Voodoom's best tactic against Blissey is to Sub all the way down, Pain Split, and try to flinch Blissey into Aura Sphere KO range with Dark Pulse as she uses Softboiled. This is obviously incredibly painful to attempt repeatedly....Considering that both of Voodoom's attack options are 100% accurate and it has far better defenses than Gengar, I thought I would try TauntSplit instead since it handles Blissey much better, and Taunt is useful against a lot of other Pokemon, like Vaporeon. Pain Split is still good for recovering when you're very low in HP, and Voodoom has plenty of chances to use it, even without a Substitute.
