Warstory from the Suspect Ladder - BL's doin' great! Shiney vs. Jenigmat429

All right everyone. This took place on the Suspect Test ladder, so there are no Garchomps and no Deoxys-S. If you're concerned about the way it played out and the fact that we switched too much, neither team apparently carried Stealth Rock, or at least they didn't use it. I'm not gonna show you my opponent's team, for suspense reasons. I'm also not going to omit Leftovers/Poison/Leech Seed, unless you guys ask me to. It's not worth the effort, and since I used Knock Off on a couple pokemon it makes it easier to keep track of. When I list scores, I listed mine first, every time.

Here's my team:

Gengar - 100%
Blissey - 100%

I figured that he'd switch. I wasn't exactly sure what Moltres could do, so I decided to make the safest move. The fact that Hypnosis missed isn't exactly that important, because I'm gonna make the same move either way.

jenigmat429 switched in Heracross (lvl 100 Heracross ♂).
Blissey used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
Heracross lost 35% of its health.

Heracross - 65%
Blissey - 100% and scared.

All right, now, just so you know my Heracross is the amazingly powerful Choice Banded version, and apart from ghost types and resistances Close Combat will do a lot. Even though I have a good idea of the switch he's gonna make, I've only seen two members of his team, so I'm gonna go with the safe non predicting option.

Shiney switched in Moltres (lvl 100 Moltres).

Hell yea, now I don't even have to switch since Close Combat's gonna own the Moltres next turn anyway. Good thing too, since Moltres can do a number on some of my later team members. Still not sure what it's running, but anyways, good riddance.

Ah crap. Now, here's a tip. If you're unsure of what a pokemon can do, look it up in the analysis. I had no idea that Moltres were generally EV'd to outrun Adamant Heracross. I assumed that Moltres was more of a Stallish pokemon and that it'd be slower. Well it turns out that Moltres is actually more offensive. Crap. Now as far as my next move, Moltres isn't gonna stay in on my Gyarados (a standard DDGyara with leftovers), so I'll get a free DD.

No worries. If it didn't switch out I'm getting in a second DD. It'll put pain even on the bane of this team: Celebi. As far as it goes, Gyarados is there to mainly hurt Gliscor. Reckless as it is, I'm gonna be able to own most of what gets sent out after two DD's. I'll let the poison take out Gyarados if I need to, because as far as I've seen of his team, Gyarados can do damage.

Such a bad play on my part. I could have saved Gyarados as death fodder, switched to Tangrowth to take the incoming Aqua Jet, and I'd be up just a tad. But here's the scoop. I've seen Moltres, Blissey, Celebi and Azumarill. Moltres is dead, Celebi is weak, and my team can handle Blissey. Azumarill's gonna go down when I switch to a Tangrowth. Azu doesn't carry both Aqua Jet and Ice Punch, so this is gonna work.

---
jenigmat429 switched in Tangrowth (lvl 100 Tangrowth ♂).

Now since Tangrowth's generally Leech Seed, I figure that he'll switch in Celebi. I'm gonna Sleep Powder, then on the switch I'll Knock Off the item of whatever comes in.

Pointless. Now I have a WishBliss, but I don't like to Wishpass if I don't have to, and Poison damage is gonna rack up unless I switch. Celebi can't do crap to Blissey anyway, besides Leech Seed which isn't a problem if I switch soon. Neither of us have Stealth Rock up yet, so even though I can force switches well, it's hard to capitalise on them.

Whatever, Gyarados still took out Moltres so screw you Celebi. I don't want to directly switch Gengar in to Celebi, because I figure that with Life Orb the Leech Seed damage will just come back to bite me. Gyarados I'll sac easily, but Gengar I keep. Because of the huge number of SDLukes, Gengar's something I'll keep until the end. I'm just gonna keep Blissey in and hopefully do something to the switch-ins with Flamethrower.

Now, he has one pokemon down, a Blissey, a Celebi, an Azumarill, and two unknowns. Blissey's sleeping, Celebi can't switch in because of Shadow Ball, and Azumarill can't take a LO Focus Blast. Focus Blast will do about 30% to Blissey and it'll hurt Azu, and in general be a good move off of the switch that I predict.

No switch here. My only real physical attacker left is Lucario, and I'm going to keep that hidden for now. I can't take the possibility of something like a random Choice Scarfer getting rid of it, because SDLuke's my only real way to sweep his team right now. I'm gonna see about getting rid of Celebi, because so far I've seen Grass Knot, Leech Seed and Recover. HP Fire would greatly hinder my set up chances. I'm gonna send in Tangrowth to Sleep Powder+Knock Off again. Now, he'll probably switch to Celebi, which is good for a couple of reasons. Blissey has 60% left, and so Focus Blast will 2HKO (no lefties because of Knock Off.) He won't Leech Seed against Tangrowth, so Gengar's got a shot at taking out the Blissey.

Even if he switches in Celebi on a resist, it's still not going to be a big deal, cause I can Shadow Ball. He probably has no reason to not let Blissey die, because from what he's seen it isn't exactly walling much. The pokemon on my team he's come closest to walling with it is about to take the KO.

I'm going to Sleep Powder to try to get Celebi into the position of needing to switch. This is starting to get into the later game, where pokemon are starting to get KO'd and where the flow of the match is critical. Two pokemon are down for each of us. I've shown him my Blissey, my Tangrowth and my Gengar, with Gengar and Tangrowth weakened. I've seen his Celebi and his Azumarill, and two others of his team are unrevealed. Tangrowth walls Azumarill, but I don't want to waste momentum healing Tangrowth with Wish, not at this critical moment in the game. Tangrowth is only really gonna take a couple more Waterfalls, or one or two Superpowers. Celebi is going to be difficult for me to get through, especially since Lucario isn't sturdy enough to set up more than once or twice. If I reveal Lucario and am forced out by something after taking damage, then I'll lose. I'm going to gain the momentum I can with the Sleep.

I make another mistake that costs me a team member here. I assumed that since it was sleeping I'd be able to switch in Gengar. But the Toxic he got on me earlier is going to cost me a lot here. Tangrowth had walled Azumarill through the game, but with the damage it took switching in and the poison, it's added up to a dead Tangrowth. I'm going to have to find a way to use a combination of Blissey and Gengar to get rid of it, because Lucario is not taking any hits from it.

Blissey restored 6% of its health.

Blissey - 44%
Shaymin - 20%

Even better, I'd have protected next turn, but since he can't really KO me I'll get in the last hit and get back up to health.

Shaymin used Seed Flare.
A critical hit!
Blissey lost 44% of its health.
jenigmat429's Blissey fainted.

Shaymin - 20%

1-2

It's a really good thing I wore Shaymin down to 20%, because I'm going to need it to KO with Extremespeed. I had no idea how much a specs'd Seed Flare did to Lucario, but I was hoping it wasn't too much. Life Orb damage might be the difference between loss and victory here. I really really hope that Lucario can beat his last pokemon.

jenigmat429: wow
jenigmat429 switched in Lucario (lvl 100 Lucario ♂).
Shaymin used Seed Flare.
It's not very effective...
Lucario lost 75% of its health.
Lucario used Swords Dance.
Lucario's attack was sharply raised.

Lucario - 24%
Shaymin - 20%

I have to hope that Lucario can KO the next pokemon without dying.

Lucario used Extremespeed.
Shaymin lost 20% of its health.
Shiney's Shaymin fainted.
Lucario lost 10% of its health.

Lucario - 14%

1-1

This is it. Whatever he has left essentially determines the game.

Shiney switched in Dugtrio (lvl 100 Dugtrio ♂).

I cannot tell you how much my heart sank. I knew that Dugtrio was physically vulnerable, but I had my doubts on how much a SD Extreme speed would do. Sucker Punch would also be a huge problem. I typed gg in, knowing that it had been a good battle. Obviously this dugtrio was a LO one, and between Sucker Punch and EQ, predicting each other's attacks would be critical.

jenigmat429: ah gg
Shiney: gg
Dugtrio used Sucker Punch.
It's not very effective...
Lucario lost 11% of its health.
Dugtrio lost 10% of its health.
Lucario used Extremespeed.
Dugtrio lost 90% of its health.
Shiney's Dugtrio fainted.
jenigmat429 wins!

HOLY SHIT LUCARIO SURVIVED BY 10 HP TO DELIVER THE WINNING BLOW! I had no idea that Extremespeed was strong enough to do that, but I can't believe I won. I believe that there was a chance that Dugtrio would have KO'd so this was essentially a coinflip finish. Great Job Shiney amazing battle. Time for Props/Slops

Props:
  • Identifying that Azumarill was Banded and exploiting that with Tangrowth/Blissey/Gengar probably was the major part of the game
  • Gengar and Blissey putting an end to Celebi and Shiney's Blissey was another good thing.
  • Lucario barely survived that Sucker Punch. 10 HP is like nothing.
  • Tangrowth and Gengar easily won this for me. Tangrowth is an amazing pokemon, seriously. Double Powder sets and Leech Seed sets have both helped out my play immensely.
Slops:
  • Just to show you how much your errorrs matter, my bad play lead to the end of Heracross before it could rape his team, Gyarados while it had two DD's, and Tangrowth earlier than it needed to. I may have been able to do a lot more in terms of the game if I had been able to get a Wish passed to Tangrowth, or if I had not let it get Poisoned.
  • I don't like winning by luck
  • The occasional mispredict probably had a big impact on this game.
That's really about it guys. If you have anything to say or add, or if you like or dislike it, that's the Warstory.

BTW Shiney, I tried to ask you after this match if I could Warstory it, but I haven't seen you on since we battled and you left the server right after this. If you're on Smogon, please tell me whether or not it's ok.

Great Sage

Banned deucer.
Technically, this would be a tie ingame, because Life Orb damage would have killed your Lucario after it used ExtremeSpeed on Dugtrio. Yes, Life Orb damage is calculated on the last turn ingame.

Well, from what I can see, Superpower+Aqua Jet on Azumarill is illegal.

Also, about Moltres, most of the Moltres I've seen have been Scarfed anyway. Of course, if it knew Flamethrower as opposed to Fire Blast/Overheat, it may not have been.

OK war story, the comments were decent.

Well if Superpower+Aqua Jet is illegal, then that prolly should be fixed on Shoddy. It's not a big deal though.

And yea, I've never really battled against a Moltres. The times that I have it's been with a Deoxys-S lead, so it's not something I've ever really thought about.

Wow, I never thought I'd see my name in a warstory, (It's grand too :D) I had to leave for dinner right after the battle.

It was an interesting battle alright, you played very well during it. I was pretty predictable for the most part, my team is more stallish then I'm generally used to but it's a lot of fun to play.

Shaymin was pretty unimpressive during this match which was a pity. The only thing he did do was finish off your blissy and I needed a crit for that. You had the game in the bag at that stage really, I knew duggy couldn't take out blissy on his own. I probably should have brought him in on tangrowth sometime, or sacced him to let poison finish off gyrados at the start.

I didn't know wishbliss was unbanned on the suspect ladder either, it was a huge mistake on my part to let you give the wish to gengar for free like that.

Good game though, and great warstory, hope we meet again on the ladder sometime.

Edit, I didn't know aqua jet and superpower was illegal on azumarill, I'll have to change that.

Me too, it was a great battle. Yea, we both made a few errors here and there. If I hadn't wasted Heracross the battle would have gone much easier. And yea, when I used to use a SpecsShaymin, it'd usually be like that: the games it did well it was amazing, and the games it didn't do anything it'd be death fodder.

And as far as it's concerned, you played much better in the early game. Looking back, if I had kept Gyarados from dying it could have been threatening for Azumarill and Dugtrio.

Good game again.

I really enjoyed the story, but I really wonder why he didn't try something else on Azumarill. Double Edge would have done wonders for trying to wear down Tangrowth, although it was a losing battle anyway. Superpower and Aqua Jet being illegal also kinda ruined it for me, mostly because I have been breeding them for a couple weeks.

Would a Choice Band Sucker Punch have killed you? I think that would be hillarious if it would, because I have always been an advocate for Choice Band on Dugtrio no matter what.

That was a pretty good story. It really showed some pretty good insight into your thoughts.

A SDed ES is a OHKO on Dugtrio pretty much no matter what (181.52% - 213.74%). Even an unboosted ES has a chance at the OHKO (91% - 107.11%).
