Arena
The ASB Tournament Arena
Field Type: Neutral
Complexity: Simple
Format: All

Restrictions: No Restrictions

Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

Despite Hydro's small and soft stature, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. When Hydro met Subway as a wild Pokemon, he defeated Subway's entire team single-handedly! Well here we are once again looking to replace a fallen Gym Leader, this time it's Water who needs a new master. With a rather convoluted and complicated qualifier situation going on I won't bore you with the details and will simply say that only the winner of this match remains in the running for king of the seas and oceans of ASB.

Out first competitor is Someoneelse who appears to have gone for the best Water team to counter other Water mons, highlights of which include Rotom-W and Ludicolo. He also brings along the only Pokemon in the match capable of Mega Evolving in Skulkraken the Gyarados. A formidable team indeed.

SubwayJ meanwhile has sided with pure bulk. With no less than three Pokemon sporting 120 or more HP and a 110 HP Azumarill not far behind it's going to be quite a task to get through all the behemoths. While his team might struggle to hit other waters supereffectively (well outside of the ever reliable Krillowatt) it's still full of plenty of punch. Especially when Azumarill all but counters Someoneelses's Ludicolo.

Well all that's left is to work out who sends out first, never an enivable task in doubles. The coin is already in the air with Someonelese having called heads..

"We're finally here. In Gym Qualifiers. Plasma, you've been with me almost from the start. You are needed now. Skulkraken, I've had you since you were just a small Magikarp. You're one of my strongest members. Do well, you two."

Well, both teams lead off with a part Electric type they hope will wreck some stuff up and a veritable powerhouse. Then a bunch of stuff happens pre-round (seriously the biggest I can recall) including Skulkraken managing to Mega Evolve despite the lack of a Mega sprite on its profile. Once the round proper gets underway Alpha employs a little trickery to remove the most obvious Electric attacking options from both opponents, surely a solid plan one would think. But thankfully Someoneelese has another plan in mind and all eyes focus squarely on Revolver starting with a highly successful Charge Beam from Plasma the Rotom. Then Skullkraken looks to make the Clawitzer even slower with a weak electric jolt. Revolver is able to shake off this paralysis to immediately retaliate, and immediately prove why he was she was such a target with a Mega Launcher boosted Aura Sphere targeting Mega Skulkraken's newly acquired Fighting weakness. Seriously Game Freak that has to be one of the most nonsensical type changes ever imagined. You made Charizard into a Dragon why not Gyarados!? But I digress...

While Alpha shows off how much it benefited from that controversial Life Orb boost with some actual attacking prowess but it all looks a little weak in comparison to the real linchpin of Someonelse's plan coming into view. Plasma laughs off the idea of using a piddly move like Thunderbolt and unleashes a fully powered Electro Ball to wreak the little gun toting fishy on the other side. Revolver is able to respond with a Dragony blast aimed at Skulkraken before the Mega mon simply rams into Clawitzer with its Skull. Crude, but effective. The final round continues in much the same vein, Krillowatt's Thunder strikes true and hard on the weakening Gyarados but Plasma takes the cake by deleting Revolver with another Electro Ball while Skulkraken plays with a growing trend in these "bring more mons than you can use" matches and removes a portion of SubwayJ's choice in team mates with his not quiteDragon Tail.

The round ends slightly in Someonelse's favour. The dangerously powerful Clawitzer has been removed but Skulkraken is looking considerably weaker at the same time. Krillowatt is sitting prettily on the bench largely untouched but will have to wait till later to rejoin the fun. Subway J at least has to reveal his entire team very early in this match as we all wait patiently for him to send out a partner for Tempete the Kingdra, who itself is hardly a poor option for the roulette to have dished out.

Making the best out of a less than ideal situation Tempete and Alpha team up to ensure that Flood and Plasma focus their attention solely on the Kingdra. This of course allows her to Bide her time before unleashing kind of a mountain of damage on poor Flood the Swampert and seeing him out of this match almost as quickly as he arrived. Despite one small mistep of Alpha finding it a little hard to Dive into the levitating Plasma but at least that is evened up after a bit of Mirror Coating action.

True to how doubles tends to go this match has heavily favoured those ordering second. Lets see how that trend holds up.

Why am I here?
Rotom-Wash: Electroweb > Electroweb > Electroweb
IF [Gyarados's Bounce misses Kingdra A2], THEN [Use Electro Ball + Electro Ball (Lapras) A3].

Gyarados: Protect (self) > Bounce (Kingdra) > Reversal + Reversal (Lapras)
IF [Gyarados's Bounce misses Kingdra A2], THEN [Use Earthquake A3].

This could go really badly in so many ways. It can go really well though, I guess?

Worried about Alpha's dwindling energies SubwayJ elects to reveal the final member of his team in Sauveur the Lapras. Yep, he sure has gone for HP totals over everything else. Not that having access to Freeze-Dry in this match is anything to be chortled at. Someonelese meanwhile calls back his weakened Gyarados, thinking that he should be able to nurse him through with the advantage of ordering second.

Sure enough he starts off very successfully at this. Skullkraken Protects itself and lets Plasma take some hits for the beginning of the round while importantly the Rotom is able to release an Electroweb to give his entire team the speed advantage. This allows Skullkraken to Bounce into the air and watch laughing as both Kingdra and Lapras miss with attacks that had a good chance at knocking him out. Finally a barrage of repeated electronic webs from the washing machine brings down Tempete and the powerful Gyarados looks set to unleash a powerful chanelling of its weakened state and make it a two for of KOes in the round.. just up until lady luck exerts her will and Sauveur's Thunderbolt hits critially and does just enough to bring Skullkraken down before she can play her hand.

This turn of events leaves the match up more or less evenly poised. At least Someoneelse has the advantage of being able to choose his most well suited final team mate and making Lapras' Red Card more or less useless.
