Whimsicott [Fairy] [QC: 0/3] [GP:0/1]

[OVERVIEW]

Fairy
========

* Whimsicott has earned itself a name throughout the entirety of competitive Pokemon through its ability to reliably supplement its team with effective buffs and striking points.
* With the Prankster ability and a very useful movepool, Whimsicott is sure to make an impact on the outcome of any match, no matter its duration on the field.
* Alongside this comes a quite decent bulk, which can be utilized in a number of ways.
* Although it has a 4x weakness to a rather common coverage type--Poison--Prankster and its high speed stat will allow it to set up all kinds of things against the opponent.
* Whimsicott's biggest weakness lies in its vulnerability to taunt, which, in most cases, nullifies its usefulness.
* The update to the Prankster ability, which makes dark types immune to its effects, makes it harder for Whimsicott to effectively do its job.

[SET]
name: Memento Support (Fairy)
move 1: Memento
move 2: Tailwind
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Encore
item: Darkium Z
ability: Prankster
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 180 SpD / 76 Def

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Z-Memento is the basis of this set. It typically will trigger a switch on your opponent's part, and allow you to safely send in another Pokemon that can do more damage to the opponent's team, and completely restore an injured Pokemon's HP.
* Tailwind is especially useful for being pitted against a faster foe, such as Mega Alakazam, Mega Beedrill, and Greninja, allowing your Pokemon to take on these speedy threats with much greater ease.
* Taunt can be used to cripple screens, hazards, recovery, and status conditions, and is especially useful against Pokemon like Cradily, Gastrodon, and Hippowdon, who pride themselves on being especially stall-reliant.
* Encore can be very effectively utilized to lock a foe into a weaker move, and allow Whimsicott to set up mostly everything within its support spectrum, before promptly sacrificing itself. This could also prompt switches that can cripple setup sweepers.

Set Details
========

* Maximum investment in HP is absolutely essential to maintain a good standard of bulk, allowing Whimsicott to sponge up certain attacks for itself or, if need be, for its allies.
* Because of its having more Special Atk. dominant than Atk. dominant weaknesses, favoring investment in Whimsicott's Sp. Def. over investment in Def. allows for a more bulky structure.
* Darkium Z allows Whimsicott to use Z-Memento, which allows Whimsicott to be a very valuable late-game asset that can safely bring in a heavy hitter that was weakened earlier in the game.

Usage Tips
========

* Whimsicott should very frequently be left on the sidelines until it is /actually/ needed. Keeping its use absolutely minimal until you are backed into some kind of corner by your opponent in essential to make sure Whimsicott can successfully carry out its mission.
* Using Whimsicott to open the door for setup sweepers is a very useful strategy that allows a fair amount of successful boosts through the help of Tailwind and/or Memento that can plow though much of a team.
* Encore is especially effective when used to lock foes into weaker or less effective moves, such as Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock, and allows Whimsicott to give whatever it switches into a plethora of buffs.
* Encore is also effective for crippling walls, by locking them into recovery and allowing for a setup sweep.

Team Options
========

* Assault Vest Magearna, completely lacking in recovery, could very much benefit from being paired with Whimsicott. This would allow players to take many more risks with Magearna, as, with Whimsicott, this metal-mon has two lives.
* Tailwind, a very valuable move, does well for max-speed Togekiss, in that it allows it to outspeed most other Pokemon, and abuse the ever-feared flinch torture for which Togekiss is known.
* Setup sweepers like Clefable and Mimikyu do well to have a Taunt user on their side, allowing them to effectively pull up their attack stats so they can be used effectively.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Fairy
--------

* As an alternative, Whimsicott could run a faster, Focus Sash set, so that it can outspeed any pesky dark types that like to pour poison all over fairy types, such as Greninja, Weavile, and Mega Sharpedo.
* Opting for U-Turn instead of Memento and Stun Spore instead of Tailwind, as well as some good speed investment would allow Whimsicott to act as a very reliable utility pivot.
* Running a Switcheroo set with a Lagging Tail can cripple speedy fairy sweepers, like Mega Beedrill.

Checks and Counters
===================

Fairy
--------
**Dark Types**: With Dark types now being immune to Pranksters effects, Whimsicott becomes exceptionally vulnerable against hard-hitting super-effective 'mons like Greninja and Weavile. Bisharp is especially threatening, as not only is it immune to Prankster, but the Defiant ability allows it to easily shake off the effects of Memento.
**Faster Priority Attackers**: Pokemon that can outspeed Whimsicott and have access to priority attacks--especially super-effective 'mons like Scizor and Mamoswine--can easily take it down, especially after things like hazard damage.
**Steel-Types**: Steel-types such as Celesteela, Magnezone, and Heatran are able to threaten Whimsicott out with their Steel-type STAB moves.
**Fire-Types**: Fire-types such as both formes of Mega Charizard, Alolan Marowak, and Volcanion threaten Whimsicott with a Fire-type STAB move.

Going to base this check off of what's here, but this set is a complete niche and isn't something that should be an analysis, more so than a description of an interesting set that might work.

This is an Amcheck and does not count for QC. Implement what you agree with and leave the rest for QC.
[OVERVIEW]

Fairy
========

* Whimsicott has earned itself a name throughout the entirety of competitive Pokemon through its ability to reliably supplement its team with effective buffs and striking points. Don't refer to previous generations and this point isn't saying anything. Pretty much fluff.
* With the Prankster ability and a very useful movepool, Whimsicott is sure to make an impact on the outcome of any match, no matter its duration on the field. All this is saying is it has Prankster and can do things with it, you aren't actually saying what Prankster + Utility moves do, let alone how they help Fairy. Also, most of this is fluff.
* Alongside this comes a quite decent bulk, which can be utilized in a number of ways. Not sure what "this" is referring to. You aren't utilizing decent bulk, it has decent bulk. I wouldn't call its bulk decent, either. It has an ok Defense stat and it only gets worse from there.
* Although it has a 4x weakness to a rather common coverage type--Poison--Prankster and its high speed stat will allow it to set up all kinds of things against the opponent. "Whimsicott is weak to common coverage types like Fire and Ice and has a x4 weakness to Poison," would be its own point, don't bring in Prankster because it has nothing to do with this.
* Whimsicott's biggest weakness lies in its vulnerability to taunt, which, in most cases, nullifies its usefulness. Whimsicott's biggest weaknesses lie in the fact that it's very frail, weak to common moves, and has a mediocre offensive presence. Taunt is a hard counter to this set because Whimsicott can't do anything after it's Taunted.
* The update to the Prankster ability, which makes dark types immune to its effects, makes it harder for Whimsicott to effectively do its job. Don't refer to past generations.

The Overview is severely lacking and has minimal to no detail, making it unclear what the point of using Whimsicott is.

When you do the Overview, you present the Pros for the Pokemon first, and then the Cons. Keep them separate and don't flip-flop with phrasing like, "It may be weak, but it gets the job done." You should also talk about things consecutively, so don't talk about Whimsicott's bulk, then Prankster, then it's typing, then Prankster, then it's bulk. Keep it grouped together in each respective section or you're just jumping around and it becomes difficult to read.

This set seems incredibly niche and gimmicky and not something that would belong in an analysis.

Moves
========

* Z-Memento is the basis of this set. It typically will trigger a switch on your opponent's part, and allow you to safely send in another Pokemon that can do more damage to the opponent's team, and completely restore an injured Pokemon's HP. This is confusing. Is your opponent provoked to switch after Z Memento is used? I'm also not sure why Fairy wouldn't use a better Z Move option like Z Belly Drum, Twinkle Tackle, Never-Ending Nightmare, etc.
* Tailwind is especially useful for being pitted against a faster foe, such as Mega Alakazam, Mega Beedrill, and Greninja, allowing your Pokemon to take on these speedy threats with much greater ease. Definitely think that Klefki and Magearna can manage these Pokemon while being much more effective for Fairy overall.
* Taunt can be used to cripple screens, hazards, recovery, and status conditions, and is especially useful against Pokemon like Cradily, Gastrodon, and Hippowdon, who pride themselves on being especially stall-reliant. Taunt cripples Pokemon that use those moves, not the moves themselves. Wouldn't Giga Drain be better for Gastrodon and Hippowdon? I'm also not so sure how much any of these Pokemon would care if you Taunt them because Whimsicott can't do anything offensively to these Pokemon and either has to switch out or setup and fodder itself off.
* Encore can be very effectively utilized to lock a foe into a weaker move, and allow Whimsicott to set up mostly everything within its support spectrum, before promptly sacrificing itself. This could also prompt switches that can cripple setup sweepers. All I'm getting from this is that this Pokemon is designed to go in and fodder itself off for 2 turns of Tailwind. The full heal from Z Memento is nice but there is little chance that it will become a saving grace except in incredibly specific scenarios. All this really does is force your opponent to switch out so it doesn't have lowered attacks while you're giving up one of your Pokemon.

Realistically any of Fairy's better team options can handle any of these niche issues without designating a single slot to complete niche utility and fodder.

Set Details
========

* Maximum investment in HP is absolutely essential to maintain a good standard of bulk, allowing Whimsicott to sponge up certain attacks for itself or, if need be, for its allies. Whimsicott really can only take resisted attacks and if it's able to be 2HKOed with switch-in, it has to sacrifice itself immediately.
* Because of its having more Special Atk. dominant than Atk. dominant weaknesses, favoring investment in Whimsicott's Sp. Def. over investment in Def. allows for a more bulky structure. This sentence is just so confusing.
* Darkium Z allows Whimsicott to use Z-Memento, which allows Whimsicott to be a very valuable late-game asset that can safely bring in a heavy hitter that was weakened earlier in the game. Again, super niche.
* Have to talk about each investment specifically.
* Prankster

Need examples for each point.

Usage Tips
========

* Whimsicott should very frequently be left on the sidelines until it is /actually/ needed. Keeping its use absolutely minimal until you are backed into some kind of corner by your opponent in essential to make sure Whimsicott can successfully carry out its mission. A lot of unnecessary phrasing.
* Using Whimsicott to open the door for setup sweepers is a very useful strategy that allows a fair amount of successful boosts through the help of Tailwind and/or Memento that can plow though much of a team. What are these setup sweepers? Tailwind will only have 2 turns left if Whimsicott uses Z Memento "optimally" so there isn't a lot of setup time or anything like that. You're also probably getting one boost maximum on whatever Pokemon it happens to be because the opponent will guaranteed switch out on the turn of the first boost unless they don't need to.
* Encore is especially effective when used to lock foes into weaker or less effective moves, such as Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock, and allows Whimsicott to give whatever it switches into a plethora of buffs. A plethora of buffs? It's only providing 2-3 turns of Tailwind and a one-time full restore.
* Encore is also effective for crippling walls, by locking them into recovery and allowing for a setup sweep. This can just be in the last point.

Need examples for each point.

Team Options
========

* Assault Vest Magearna, completely lacking in recovery, could very much benefit from being paired with Whimsicott. This would allow players to take many more risks with Magearna, as, with Whimsicott, this metal-mon has two lives. What?
* Tailwind, a very valuable move, does well for max-speed Togekiss, in that it allows it to outspeed most other Pokemon, and abuse the ever-feared flinch torture for which Togekiss is known. Why does Scarf Togekiss need Tailwind? What is the move it's using?
* Setup sweepers like Clefable and Mimikyu do well to have a Taunt user on their side, allowing them to effectively pull up their attack stats so they can be used effectively. Clefable is not a setup sweeper.
* Tapu Koko
* Tapu Bulu
* Tapu Fini
* Azumarill
* Klefki
* Gardevoir

Stopped after team options. This analysis feels like a description for a niche Whimsicott set that would be like, half-gimmicky and half-underrated, but heavy on the gimmicky side. This is definitely not something that is acceptable for an actual Pokemon analysis. Everything is lacking and there's no detail anywhere. I can't formally reject this, but this is pretty much rejected.

If you want to become familiar with Smogon grammar standards and such, here's the link that you can review and practice with: http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/spelling-and-grammar-standards.3588427/

Oi ve, thank you for the notes.

Hi,

I don't like doing this much but this analysis just doesn't cut it. You're lacking too much basic information about Whimsicott, its flaws, its purpose, how to use it, and what should be used alongside it. The set is what makes me the most worried though, it's not even a set that I'd bother mentioning in Other Options, let alone make it the primary set. iLlama put it pretty well, there's absolutely zero reason to use a set like this over any other Z-move user. Moving on from the set, the Overview makes very little sense and fails to highlight Whimsicott's benefits and flaws. I don't even know what this means:

* Whimsicott has earned itself a name throughout the entirety of competitive Pokemon through its ability to reliably supplement its team with effective buffs and striking points.

Usage Tips is vague and uninformative and Team Options just shows a very clear lack of understanding on how to use Whimsicott. You don't have any viable sets in Other Options either and Dark-types are apparently the best checks to Whimsicott (kinda makes sense with your set considering you don't have Moonblast I guess but that shows how unreliable your set is).

I don't want to discourage you from writing analyses but you really need to work on your understanding on the Pokemon in question before writing an analysis on it. Lurk more and look at other analyses before having another shot at this, please.

QC Rejected 1/3

As terrors said, the only set you have here is simply not viable and really isn't even an option. It looks like there's a fundamental misunderstanding of how Whimsicott is used. QC would have to basically write the entire analysis over again, so I'm going to lock this. As terrors said again, feel free to reserve another Pokemon, but I would also strongly recommend becoming more familiar with Monotype first in general. Please use this as a learning experience, as iLlama's amcheck gave you a lot of good comments too regarding what sort of detail we're looking for.
