The mist engulfing the Spring Path makes it hard for you to understand where you are, even with the help of the map N gave you. On the upside, though, it provides you with a welcome cover. With the entire region roaming with Darkrai's vile minions, few places in Sinnoh can still be called safe.

Eventually, you find the entrance to Turnback Cave, although "stumbling" would better describe it. According to the information the Eon twins shared with you, Cresselia is being held captive somewhere inside. No one is guarding the entrance - either nothing of value is inside or there are defenses further in. Uncertain about which of the possibilities would be worse, you cautiously step in, piercing through the darkness with the faint light of your torches.

But what is the right direction? Every room you enter looks identical to the previous one. You can't even tell if you've been walking in circles or not, except you haven't stumbled upon the entrance in quite some time by now. You frequently glanced at your watches, wary about how much time passed. But ever since you entered the cave, the watches have marked the same time, as if they were frozen. Or have you really entered a place beyond time? Sure, travelling through time is one thing, but this? The blood chill in your veins, as you question what you've been putting yourselves through.

Then, out of nothing but your deepest fears, a room shows up with a glooming rift at the center of it. Eerie whispers and wails echo from it, and even in the light of your torches, the portal looks pitch black. The echoes would frighten even the bravest of the trainers. And yet, you feel enthralled to them. Is this a sorcery? Or was your rationality lost the moment you stepped in this ominous place? Maybe no one will ever know, as even before you decided it, your body is already walking inside, enticed by the voices.

You still had the suspect you didn't leave your homeworld while you were walking through the cave, even as your perception of time was drifting away. But nothing like that could prepare you to what awaited you on the other side of the portal. Even the most accurate descriptions of what was known as the Distortion World didn't resemble the realm of darkness now seeping around you. A colorless cloud of shadows, with visages sometimes emerging from the haze, their expressions twisted in agony and despair. Whether it is a phenomenon of self-suggestion or those visages are real, you can't tell. What could real mean, in that place? Is it real? Are you still real?

Then, as you slowly gain a glimpse of auto-conscience once again, you see the portal landed you on a gloomy bridge, suspended over the infinite, twisting shadow. At the end of the bridge, a being was floating motionless, its skin looking pale and sickeningly colorless. Even in this state, though, you could tell from its shape that the creature was indeed the Dreamer itself. The creature you came here to save, even if you don't know who will save yourselves should it come down to that.

Putting your fears aside for as long as you can muster, you approach the captive Pokemon, but a female, cold voice suddenly calls you out, shrieking like a frightening banshee in the endless night.

What is this disturbance? You dare trespass this hallowed ground? This shall be your final resting place

Chapter 13: Rescue in the Nightmare

The trip to Turnback Cave was a nightmare. No, we were not attacked by anything, but the map N gave us looked like some 4 year old had drawn it. As if it were not hard enough to find the path in the first place. Fortunately when we did find the path, I felt an odd serenity that I did not feel out in the routes. It seemed that, at least for now, Darkrai's influence had not reached this place.

Finding Turnback Cave was no easy task either, as the entire place was covered in fog, and wouldn't you know it, I forgot my Defog Pokemon again. Figures. According to the information the Eon twins shared with us, Cresselia was being held captive somewhere inside. Eerily, nothing seemed to be guarding the entrance, meaning either we found the wrong cave, or we were in for a nasty surprise at the end. Either way, we would need to head inside, using the flames from our fire type Pokemon to light the way inside the otherwise pitch dark cavern.

Making us even more confused, the place was a giant maze. Literally every room in that forsaken place was identical, save for some rubble here and there. The only clue we had that we were not going in circles was that we still saw no sign of the entrance. We frequently glanced at our watches, wary about how much time had passed. But to add to the surreal quality to the place, they were frozen in place, as though we had entered a place somehow...beyond time. I personally chalked it up to a really odd case of coincidental malfunction, but my Pokemon were even more spooked than I was. Sure our plot was to travel through time to stop Darkrai, but...this was something else. Both my Pokemon and I were chilled.

Then, what may as well have come out of a horror show, we find the room we were looking for. A large, pitch black portal opened up before us like an gaping maw, whispers and wails emanating from it. At times, I thought I could hear familiar voices from the rift, as though we were looking into a portal to the netherworld. Ordinarily I would run away at the sight of something like this, but I had to steel my courage, and we slowly walked up to the portal. Then all at once, everything was black, as though the portal had sucked us in.

When I came to, I briefly wondered whether I had left my sanity back at the League. The realm was one of shadows, fleeting from one place to the next. The trees were on the walls, the water was flowing up, and the giant cherries on said trees either fell up or down depending on what was less convenient. Jokes aside, it was a most eldritch of places, things appeared and disappeared as I walked closer. My friend had always said that the Distortion World was a colorful, if bizarre place, but this was different. Everything was in some shade of black, grey, or white, as though corrupted by the shadows all around. A colorless cloud took the shape of things...sometimes people, sometimes Pokemon, wrapped in the sheerest terror. I felt like I was wandering in a dream, was this place real, was I real?

I shook my head at this, of course this was real, and I very well still existed thank you very much. I noticed that we had ended up on a bridge...well it was not really a bridge, as it was floating despite only being attached to land at one end. Below me was a twisting abyss of shadow. On the...ceiling, I saw a being, floating motionless just below the ceiling. I knew right away that it was our target, Cresselia. Briefly, we looked around to see if there was an enemy around, but seeing nothing, we continued. It was a rather long walk, we had to jump across several platforms, until finally we had ended up in what seemed to be a forest of sorts on the wall, full of long, tentacle like "trees".

We put our fears aside, and approached closer, but suddenly the trees all dissolved at our passing, leaving a wide open field of grey colored sand. A cold, female voice suddenly called out, shrieking like a banshee in the myths.

Without bothering to wait for an explanation, the ghost attacked! In a flash, it punted me towards the edge of the arena, and I nearly lost balance. Taking a trip into the dark abyss was not my plan, so I quickly summoned my Pokemon to fight. Once I had done so, I recognized that this enemy was the same Necturna we had seen in the Old Flower Paradise. As if anticipating this, several ghosts came out of the woodwork and ambushed us as well, and it took my Pokemon all their might to prevent them from chucking me off the edge.

This was going to be my toughest battle yet.

The raid quickly wipes out Necturna's minions, before taking a shot at breaking the witch's shield. However, the shadowy barrier holds, and even if Necturna clearly possesses the magic to dismantle one team mate at a time, she decides to call more spectres to her side!

Overall, we were doing pretty well for ourselves, apparently Greninja was brainwashed, but Magenta's quick thinking managed to snap him back to his senses. In return, we dealt tremendous damage to Necturna, and our forces were galvanized. I decided to keep the pressure up, but Necturna had other ideas and summoned a strange ghost. Due to it's low life, I decided it was best dealt with by Flame Burst, which turned out to be lucky for me in the end.

At last we were making some progress. Our attacks were too much for Necturna's minions to bear, and even she herself was seeming quite weakened by our assault. However, she was far from down, we had to keep up the momentum, and our guys were running out of juice, both in terms of power and in terms of stamina. This was going to be close.

Final

As the witch's body fades in the surrounding shadows, the ground beneath you begins to collapse, and countless ghosts emerge from the darkness, eager to consume your souls. However, right when everything seems lost, a blinding, soothing light brights in the colorless sky, wiping out the evil phantoms and throwing you into a state of unspoken serenity. The otherwordly feeling lasts only for a few instants. A breath after, you find yourselves at the entrance of the Turnback Cave, wondering if everything which happened after you stepped inside was just a product of your immagination. But the wounds on your Pokemon are real, and so is the beautiful, majestic Pokemon floating right next to you, finally free from the witch's dark grasp. A crystalline voice echoes through your heads.

"Thank you for rescuing me, brave souls. The night is falling on us, but hope still shines in the twilight. And as long as humanity will not give up to the darkness, the Dreamer will stand by its side"

(Sorry for the delay, I meant to put this up way earlier. Sadly real life and stuff got in the way. Hope you guys enjoy the flavor.)

(Minor warning, this part's a bit of a victim of Anachronistic Order. There was supposed to be more foreshadowing for this part, but due to the nature of raids and me never getting to flavor my stuff, this could come off as a bit out of nowhere.)

End Chapter 13: The Dreamer Freed

After a long road of taking down Necturna's minions and finally whittling down her own stamina, Magenta finally ended the powerful ghost with a fiery punch. Wordlessly, Necturna fell to the ground face down, prompting a barrage of cheers from our company. As our merry making ended though, we found ourselves rather disoriented. During the fight, where had we gone? The path behind us had long disappeared thanks to the Distortion World's nature, and now we were left to wonder where to go. However, that wondering did not last long, as while our backs were turned, Necturna suddenly stood up and said

"Fools! I am not done yet!"

My heart stopped suddenly, in a moment she would launch a volley of bolts at us and our Pokemon, annihilating us all.

Just then though, I heard a female voice I did not recognize. It was definitely a human voice, and I heard it shout "Dragonair, use Holy Fire!". Before Necturna could even finish her move, a light appeared in the sky and crashed down upon Necturna! As the Necturna faded to nothingness, she let out a final, ominous warning as her final forces faded from her.

Baffled by the sudden deus ex machina, I spun around in order to try and discern who it was that saved us. Just a few yards from us, a girl with blue-black hair stood on a rock floating in the sky. She had a white scarf, and a red coat that was similar to the winter attire of most people in Sinnoh. She soon jumped down and landed with perfect precision right in front of us. She smiled and asked us who we were.


"...Harold."


"I am Maxim, what about you?"


"Me? My name is Scarlet. It's not often that we have visitors down here in the Distortion World. That girl...a minion of Darkrai's I presume?"


"Yeah. How'd you know where to find us? Did the League send you?"

Before we could continue the conversation, the ground beneath us began to collapse, and countless ghosts emerged from the darkness, eager to consume our souls. However, right when everything seemed lost, a blinding, soothing light blinded us in the colorless sky, wiping out the evil phantoms and throwing us into a state of unspoken serenity. The feeling only lasted for a few instants, and soon afterwards we breathed a collective breath of fresh air. Somehow, we found ourselves just in front of Turnback Cave, where we had started. At first, I wondered if the events we had seen was just a weird dream, but the girl next to us and the floating pink Pokemon above us dispelled the thought. It was Cresselia, Legendary Pokemon of good dreams, and the one we were trying to rescue. The girl, Scarlet, smiled, clearly this was the friend she was trying to help. An otherworldly, crystalline voice echoed through our heads.

"Thank you for rescuing me, brave souls. The night is falling on us, but hope still shines in the twilight. And as long as humanity will not give up to the darkness, the Dreamer will stand by its side"


Just as we were beginning to leave to head back to the League, I noticed an unusual object in my hand. Perhaps I had grabbed it when we were surrounded by light. For the time being, I stuck it in my backpack, simply hoping to make sense of what just happened, and what our next move was.
