Wobbuffet (Bulky)

While a mention of bulkier EVs is mentioned in Wobbuffet's AC, Wobb with full defensive investment deserves a set of its own just because of how different it actually plays.

[SET]
name: Bulky

move 2: Mirror Coat
move 3: Counter
move 4: Safeguard
item: Leftovers
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 28 HP / 252 Def / 228 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Second only to Jirachi on the most-annoying-Pokemon-to-face scale, Wobbuffet demonstrates just how effective Shadow Tag can make a seemingly terrible Pokemon. With the deadly combination of Shadow Tag, Mirror Coat, and Counter, Wobbuffet can trap nearly any Choiced revenge killer, and take them out with either Mirror Coat or Counter. Encore helps provide the free turns that it's infamous for to support its teammates. Encore also helps when facing non-Choiced attackers, as it will help determine whether Wobbuffet should stay in to KO, or switch out for something else to take advantage of the Encore-locked Pokemon. Encore, Mirror Coat, and Counter are honestly the only things Wobbuffet needs, so the last moveslot is pure filler. Safeguard is used because it can offer status protection for Wobbuffet's team, but it really is just a waste of a turn to setup.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>The choice between Calm or Bold is entirely dependent on whether you want Wobbuffet to take special or physical hits better. The EV spread maximizes whatever defense Wobbuffet's nature is boosting, and the 28 HP EVs reach a Leftovers number. The remaining EVs are thrown into whatever defense is not being boosted by Wobbuffet's nature to bolster Wobbuffet's ability to take hits. The only other option Wobbuffet has to use in the last moveslot is Tickle, but considering that Wobbuffet is slower than Forretress, it doesn't have much use.</p>

<p>Because of Wobbuffet's ability to grant free turns and defeat Choice Scarf users, setup sweepers make great partners. Volcarona loves having Choice Scarf Terrakion removed, which Wobbuffet pulls off with ease, and can sweep quite easily with a free turn provided by Wobbuffet. Terrakion is much the same as Volcarona; it likes Choice Scarf users and priority being removed, and it loves to have a free turn of setup, both of which are provided by Wobbuffet. Terrakion also comes with the bonus of resisting Dark-type moves thrown at Wobbuffet, and even gets an Attack boost from them. Weather teams also appreciate Wobbuffet's support, because it can remove opposing teams' weather starters, which is amazingly helpful. Sadly, Wobbuffet's only curse is its lack of recovery, so a Wish passer will let Wobbuffet stay around like a cockroach and keep annoying teams. Blissey and Chansey are perfect for this job, and they can switch into Ghost-type moves aimed at Wobbuffet, while Wobbuffet can stomach the Fighting-type attacks hurled at the two blobs. It should also be mentioned that despite Wobbuffet's great bulk, it still faces the risk of being 2HKOed by powerful hits on the switch in.</p>

This is just the regular wobuffet set with a different ev spread. It plays almost exactly the same, u switch into a choiced move and u kill the mon' with the appropriate move

Lol you obviously haven't used this. The main purpose of fast Wobb is to outspeed as many walls as possible, Encore and Tickle them to the point where they get killed by Pursuit, Dugtrio, whatever. The main purpose of bulky Wobb is to facilitate a sweep as much as possible, by either removing Choiced revenge killers, or just Encoring resisted moves. They serve very different roles.

The choice of Calm and Bold is really just preference and involves the needs of the team (whether you want to eliminate special attackers or vice versa). I'm really not sure if there's a "superior" nature though.

in my opinion Calm nature should be mentioned first over Bold, since its more notable the difference in the chance of getting OHKO than the Bold nature one. Since Adamant Choice Banded Outrage from Haxorus does 88.07% - 101.7% and has a 12.5% chance to OHKO, with Bold Nature it does 79.55% - 91.48%. And Specs Hydreigons Draco Meteor does 90.53% - 104.55% with 31.25% chance to OHKO on Bold nature, and in Calm nature it recieves 81.82% - 94.32%(all after rocks.) So Calm Wobbuffet is less likely to get OHKO at full hp after rocks damage. But its your point of view and correct me if i made any mistakes or forgot to mentioned some common threats that can easily OHKO Calm nature making Bold nature a more viable option.:toast:

Just saying, Wobbuffet can't do anything to Hydreigon due to its immunity to Mirror Coat.

ohh sorry forgot about that xD,but what i was trying to show is trying to get one of the strongest special hitters in OU just for the example, but yeah thank you for reminding me that.

Don't know if it's important or not but might I recommend a spread of 92 HP / 172 Def / 244 SpD with a Bold nature. Wobbuffet's HP is divisible by 16, defences differential by 1. My spread takes physical attacks better but not special attacks than the EV spread listed (assuming it's running a Calm nature). Not that I'm saying my spread should be used but can someone explain the reason for the spread given?

A thought occurred to me, are there any benefits for Wobbuffet to run minimum Speed?

Enough lollygagging, Taunt support (U-turn or Volt Switch on the supporter helps) is very helpful for Wobbuffet to take down the odd tank. It's also has a great niche on weather teams to trap and finish off other weather starters (it does have trouble with Hippowdon and Ninetails that carry Nasty Plot and/or Hypnosis). This is what differentiates bulky from typical, it can take a hit and then hit back. Everything else I have to say is already in the analysis that has been uploaded.

You want to use less HP than 92, because investing in HP as opposed to defenses is reducing Wobb's overall defensive ability (see this applet). 28 EVs makes wobb's health divisible by 16 (a leftovers number), and is the first number available to do so.

Okay, gotcha (goes to Dream World to get berries to lower HP EVs). Still questioning Blissey. None the less, I think the later half of my previous comment is worth taking a look at. Aside from that, great job!

So other than the future writeup and deleting mentions of dedicated defensive investment on Fast Wobb, the only issue we'll have to think about is what to name this kind of Wobbuffet.

Quick and painless. Gotta love it.
