Hi C&C, here is my Yanma UU analysis, originally posted by NightShadow. He gave me permission to take over it. http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81616

[Overview]

While Yanma may seem harmless at first glance, it can actually deal quite some damage, having the ability to 2HKO many common leads in UU. Yanma has two great abilities in Compoundeyes and Speed Boost, increasing the accuracy of its moves and raising Yanma's Speed every turn, respectively. After two boosts to its Speed, Yanma is capable of outspeeding everything in UU. Yanma also has access to Bug Buzz and Air Slash, two reliable STAB options with good coverage in UU, as well as a useful support move in Hypnosis, which has its accuracy issues alleviated somewhat by Compoundeyes. Yanma does have its fair share of drawbacks despite these many advantages, however, mainly its paper-thin defenses, and relatively shallow movepool. Also, Yanma's all around awful typing makes it 4x weak to the ever present Stealth Rock, pounding one more nail into its coffin. Nonetheless, Yanma is a very unique Pokemon who can be a real asset to a team that is designed to support it appropriately.

move 4: Hypnosis

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set Yanma can run without being harshly outclassed by another Pokemon in UU. Bug Buzz and Air Slash provide Yanma with two powerful STAB moves that hit Pokemon that don't resist them for solid damage. Air Slash also has a 30% flinch chance, which can come in handy once in a while. Protect allows Yanma to scout, beat Fake Out leads such as Ambipom, and gain a free boost of Speed if Speed Boost is the chosen ability. Hidden Power Ground is also an option, allowing Yanma to defeat Aggron, who would otherwise wall it, and hits Registeel and Regirock for at least super effective damage. Hypnosis is important so that Yanma can incapacitate a Pokemon that it cannot defeat directly. As for the choice of ability, Compoundeyes is very useful, increasing the accuracy of Hypnosis and to a lesser extent, Air Slash. Compoundeyes boosts Hypnosis's accuracy from 60% to 78%, while Air Slash becomes 100% accurate. Speed Boost is still a great ability, though, allowing Yanma to outspeed most Pokemon after just one turn, and defeat them before they can retaliate.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Yanma's EV spread allows it to hit as hard as possible, while outrunning most common UU leads. The remaining 4 Defense EVs are filler, and even with the extra point in Defense, Yanma isn't able to stand up to even powerful neutral hits. Spiritomb is a major issue for Yanma, as it's able to take all of Yanma's attacks with ease and retaliate with a powerful STAB attack, such as Pursuit.

Some common leads that Yanma can outspeed and put to sleep include Mesprit, Qwilfish, Cloyster, and most Uxie. Against faster leads such as Scyther, Yanma should use Hypnosis to incapacitate it before proceeding to attack. Focus Sash protects Yanma from being OHKOed, so you needn't worry about Yanma's well being before it can successfully sleep the opposing lead. Alternatively, Yanma can use Protect to stall out a turn if packing Speed Boost, after which it can use Hypnosis without fear of sustaining major damage. Against faster leads who may Taunt Yanma, such as Mismagius, Yanma should switch out immediately to a counter. Unless Yanma can OHKO or 2HKO the opposing lead, Yanma should first use Hypnosis to severely cripple it. After the other lead has been incapacitated, Yanma can proceed to batter the opponent's team with its powerful attacks.

[Team Options]

Chansey and Clefable are good teammates for Yanma, as both are capable of outspeeding Spiritomb and able to take it on with Toxic. Chansey is also able to set up Stealth Rock, which is very helpful for an offensive Pokemon such as Yanma. Hitmontop is an excellent teammate because of its access to Rapid Spin, which is able to rid your side of the field of Stealth Rock, giving Yanma the much needed ability to switch in repeatedly. Hitmontop can also defeat Pokemon that trouble Yanma, such as the special walls Chansey and Registeel. Finally, Milotic makes a great partner as it can switch into most Fire-types and Rhyperior with ease and threaten them out with STAB Surf. In return, Yanma can switch into Choice-locked Grass-type attacks aimed at Milotic.

[Optional Changes]

U-turn is a decent option to consider, though given Yanma's vulnerability to Stealth Rock, it's not recommended. Psychic and Shadow Ball are alternate attacking options that offer good coverage, but are quite weak unless they manage to score super effective damage on an opposing Pokemon. AncientPower enables Yanma to almost assuredly OHKO Moltres, which is otherwise only 3HKOed by Air Slash, when run with a Modest nature. Lastly, Quick Attack can be used for picking off Focus Sash users that are faster than Yanma, though it should only be used in tandem with Compoundeyes, as it is a redundant move alongside Speed Boost.

[Counters]

Spiritomb is a great counter to Yanma because it can take any attack Yanma typically uses, can set up on it with Calm Mind, and with a RestTalk setup can take Hypnosis with ease. Spiritomb also has decent offensive stats, and with Yanma's frail defenses, it isn't hard for Spiritomb to remove Yanma from the battle with a timely Shadow Ball or Pursuit. Chansey and Registeel are also issues for Yanma with their impressive special bulk and ability to set up Stealth Rock, making sure Yanma will not be coming back into play safely. Both of the aforementioned Pokemon can also slowly wear Yanma down with Seismic Toss, or cripple it outright with Thunder Wave. Other than the above threats, Sleep Talk Pokemon or those with Insomnia and respectable bulk can counter Yanma. Any Pokemon that can take a hit from Yanma and strike back with a powerful STAB move will usually be able to defeat it once sleep clause has been activated, however.

This Yanma looks a lot like the Yanmega Anti-Lead. It seems it would work well withboth Speed Boost and Compoundeyes as abilities. However, Compoundeys boosts just the accuracy of Hypnosis, while Speed Boost allows you to outspeed everything in 2-3 turns.

This pretty much means that Speed Boost would be able to come back midgame better, while Compoundeyes makes for a better lead.

You can mention Psychic and Shadow Ball in Optional Changes. Noctowl can be mentioned as a counter too, as he has Insomnia and great Special Defense stat, but as it's never seen, I don't know if you should mention it or not...

Had been waiting for this to be updated. Just mention Registeel as the prime counter to that set:

Just saying, if you're using Compoundeyes it might be a good idea to replace Protect with another attack, since you're not getting a speed boost anyway. U-Turn can also be good OC material IMO (Hey if Butterfree gets U-Turn mentioned in its analysis, why doesn't Yanma??)

Protect is there mainly for Ambipom and scouting issues (find out what move Scarf Saur / CB Scyther are going to use) and such. Also, Protect > HP Ground.

Fake Out doesn't KO, you get the speed boost and sleep it, right?

Meanwhile, HP Ground deals with Kabutops, Omastar, and Registeel.

...does that mean HP Grass should be slashed in?

Bug Buzz deals the same damage to Kabutops and Omastar, and HP Ground deals some pretty pathetic damage to Registeel; it's mainly there to hit stuff like Aggron. This lead is meant to sleep others, preventing them to execute them strategy, and from there chip away on their health with its STABs, not outright OHKO it. Also, Compoundeyes is the main ability, so Ambipom still beats you without Protect.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Yanma’s EV spread allows it to hit as hard as possible, while outrunning most common leads that dominate the tier. The remaining 4 Defense EVs are filler, and even with the extra point in Defense, Yanma won’t be taking powerful hits any time soon. Spiritomb is quite problematic, not worrying about any of Yanma’s attacks, and can retaliate with a STAB attack that can seriously injure Yanma.

[Team Options]

Chansey and Clefable make good teammates with Yanma, outspeeding Spiritomb, and being able to take on it with Toxic. Chansey is also able to set up Stealth Rock, which is great for any offensive Pokemon. Hitmontop is also a good teammate thanks to Rapid Spin, so if Yanma was to switch out onto the field, it would not lose half of its health on its way back in. Hitmontop can also defeat Pokemon that trouble Yanma, such as Chansey and Registeel.

[Optional Changes]

U-Turn is a decent option, allowing Yanma to scout and switch out from Pokemon who can defeat it, though it must beware of Stealth Rock. Psychic and Shadow Ball are options for Yanma, offering good coverage, but both moves are quite weak unless they hit something super effectively. Spiritomb also has decent offensive stats, and with Yanma’s frail defenses, it won’t be hard for Spiritomb to knock out Yanma at all. Chansey and Registeel are also nightmares to Yanma, both having very good special bulk, as well as being able to set up Stealth Rock, making sure Yanma will not be coming back onto the field without a severe repercussions. Both of them can also slowly wear Yanma down with Seismic Toss, or cripple Yanma with Thunder Wave. Other than the above, Sleep Talk users and Pokemon who have Insomnia, not many can counter Yanma because of its ability to put that counter to sleep. However, once Sleep Clause has been activated, Yanma becomes much easier to deal with. Any Pokemon who can take a hit from Yanma will probably defeat it.

Wow, this is so much better than some of your previous work. =P Good job.

Unlike my other ones, I decided to take the advice of some of our fellow Smogonites, and actually TAKE TIME AND EFFORT. Though my C&C mentoring with SDS hasn't begun yet, I feel like I'm improving too. xP

Regardless, thank you for the proofread. =)

EDIT: Thanks Oglemi, I will mention some leads in the analysis. I gotta run now, so I'll do it when I get back. Thanks!

OK, I'm going to have to ask you to add more info into this analysis. Since it is a lead analysis, how does Yanma actually fare against the most threatening leads? You list the moves and what they do, but you don't give any specific Pokemon other than Ambipom and Spiritomb. Who is Yanma faster than that it can put to sleep with Hypnosis? What should Yanma do against Mismagius, Scyther, Snover, Hippopotas, etc.

You don't need to list all of them, but get the main ones. 2 paragraphs for an analysis isn't going to cut it in my book.

But, yes, this is much better than your usual writing. Thank you and good work.

grammar was decent, so i worked on prose. i re-arranged several sentences to make the analysis flow better, and i added/removed information where i felt that it was neccessary to do so.

Overall really well written. I fixed prose in a bunch of places, and also fixed the coordination of 'it' with 'that' and 'which' (instead of 'who'). Other than that and a few places where I added what I feel are important notes, good job.

Cheers.
