[OVERVIEW]

Zapdos's unique Electric / Flying typing alongside with Roost gives it the ability to fill multiple roles including dedicated wallbreaker, cleaner, and wall. Zapdos can fit on a variety of playstyles/teams. Zapdos is so customizable, that even the sets listed in this analysis do not do justice to its versatility. Zapdos has usable bulk that allows it to check the appropriate threats for a variety of teammates. Furthermore, Zapdos sports a fantastic Special Attack stat that allows it to plow through a large portion of the tier with a boost from Life Orb or Choice Specs. Unfortunately, Zapdos hits a somewhat disappointing Speed tier for an offensive minded set. However, it still functions very well as a pivot in addition to its offensive capabilities. Zapdos also checks important metagame threats such as Cobalion, Crobat, Doublade, Heracross, and Lucario. However, it does nothing against clerics with reliable recovery, such as Florges and Umbreon and also completely struggles against Reuniclus and Snorlax. It is also important to mention that Zapdos faces competition from Rotom-H, which checks Mamoswine. Lastly, Zapdos is weak to Stealth Rock and, as a result, Zapdos is also prone to being wore down due to the plethora of attackers it tends to regularly check. However, it is a fantastic case of positives outweighing negatives and is one of the most versatile Pokemon in all of UU.

[SET]
name: Triple Attack + Roost
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers / Magnet
ability: Static
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB move, OHKOing many frail Pokemon and 2HKOing a large portion of the metagame bar special walls. Heat Wave hits the Grass-, Steel-, Ice-, and Bug-types in the tier, including but not limited to Shaymin, Cobalion, Mamoswine, and Galvantula. Hidden Power Grass is mainly use for Swampert and its Mega Evolution, but it may also be used against Krookodile, Mamoswine, and Donphan. Hidden Power Ice targets towards Salamence, Mega Sceptile, Hydreigon, and Gligar, the latter of which walls this set if it doesn't run the move. It also affects other Ground-types such as Nidoqeen, Nidoking, and Donphan. Roost is used to increase Zapdos's overall longevity throughout the game. Volt Switch may be used over Heat Wave or Hidden Power if pivoting is more important than coverage. Metal Sound could replace one of Zapdos's coverage options for the capability to punch through special walls such as Umbreon and Florges.

Set Details
========

252 Special Attack EVs maximize Zapdos's power. 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed many offensive threats including Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Lucario. The choice between items is entirely dependent on the user and the team you are building. Leftovers helps Zapdos retain its longevity and prevents it from becoming overly reliant on Roost. Alternatively, Life Orb lets Zapdos pressure special walls quite a bit harder, but severely cuts into its health, preventing it from throwing out attacks as frequently and making it harder to check foes such as Doublade and other priority users. Magnet alleviates this while still providing a moderate boost to Thunderbolt. Static gives Zapdos a 30% chance to paralyze its foes when it gets hit by a physical move.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos is best use as a pseudo-offensive pivot, being able to take resisted hits and, for the most part, respond with Roost + the appropriate offensive move. This set is a moderately effective special wallbreaker and should be saved for a moment in which it can take something out via a revenge kill or wallbreaking. Zapdos has to be careful of incoming neutral hits when Stealth Rock is set up, as it will quickly get whittled down. Static gives Zapdos a niche by checking U-turn cores due to the chance at paralysis.

Team Options
========

Zapdos pairs up fantastically with both offensive and balance cores, including common Mega Beedrill and Florges cores. Almost all bulky Water-types such as Swampert, Suicune, Empoleon, and Tentacruel. love Zapdos's typing and typing synergy to compliment them. Almost every common balance Pokemon appreciates Zapdos's unique typing and ability to offset prior damage, including Pokemon such as Florges, Cobalion, Reuniclus, and Snorlax. Offensively, Pokemon such as Krookodile, Mienshao, and Entei serve to provide physical wallbreaking when Zapdos faces off against a special wall. Entry hazard control ensures that Zapdos won't be racking up Stealth Rock damage. Further, opposing entry hazard damage will greatly increase Zapdos's opportunity for a late-game cleanup. Forretress, Tentacruel, and Krookodile make great partners in this respect.

[SET]
name: Bulky Defog
move 1: Thunderbolt / Discharge
move 2: Roost
move 3: Defog
move 4: Heat Wave / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB move, and it can 2HKO a good portion of the Pokemon that Zapdos counters. Discharge is a secondary option, as the 30% paralysis rate increases Zapdos's overall utility; however, Thunderbolt is generally the preferable option since Discharges misses out on some important OHKOs, such as on Crobat, or 2HKOs, such as on Salamence. As a result, this option should only be used if long-term paralysis-spreading complements the makeup of your team. Roost greatly supports this set by giving Zapdos a reliable recovery option. Defog removes entry hazards, preventing Zapdos and its teammates from being worn down over the course of the match. Heat Wave complements Zapdos's coverage, especially against Grass-types and Mamoswine. Toxic is a fantastic option as well, applying passive pressure to all playing styles. Toxic also prevents Zapdos from being walled by Pokemon such as Cresselia and pressures offensive Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Kyurem. Hidden Power Ice and Hidden Power Grass are also viable options but are strictly team dependent.

Set Details
========

248 HP maximizes Zapdos's overall bulk in relation to Stealth Rock damage. More HP EVs also increases the HP recovered each turn from Leftovers and Roost. 236 Defense EVs with a Bold nature maximize Zapdos's overall bulk. The EVs here can be also be used for Special Defense. A mixed set using 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe with a Calm nature can be used to take on a wider variety of sets, although Zapdos's will no longer be able to reliably check Pokemon such as Gyarados and Life Orb Psyshock users such as Azelf. A faster set of 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe can be used as well if your team needs a faster defogger. Leftovers grants Zapdos passive recovery and increases its longevity. Pressure is a notable ability for this set as opposed to the more offensive options, since Roost can effectively stall out certain moves such as Fire Blast and Close Combat. Zapdos must use Pressure as its ability

Usage Tips
========

Almost all Zapdos's sets can fit on bulky balance cores, and this Zapdos is no different whatsoever. It operates effectively as a bulky Defogger option that can also pressure many offensive and defensive cores with Toxic stall. It can switch into many common Stealth Rock users such as Krookodile and Mega Aggron or mid-game against physical attackers such as Heracross and Honchkrow.

Team Options
========

Zapdos is completely dominated by setup sweepers, so phazers such as Swampert, Empoleon, and Suicune are extremely effective at preventing opposing sweeps. Tentacruel is a great partner, as it is able to set up Toxic Spikes and pressure Pokemon such as Porygon2, Florges, and Umbreon. Furthermore, Pokemon such as Reuniclus and Florges love to set up Calm Minds against Zapdos, so having something like Choice Band Krookodile or Mega Aggron is a good idea to pressure these threats. This Zapdos set cannot do anything do Nidoqueen or Nidoking, and it struggles immensely against Mamoswine. As a result, it cannot be stressed how valuable it is to use bulky Water-types with this set. Other great partners include Choice Specs Chandelure and Kyurem for their ability to break past the Pokemon that this set struggles with; however, Chandelure is not a switch-in for Pokemon such as Nidoqueen, but rather, it is a strong wallbreaker that benefits from Zapdos's defensive typing.

[SET]
name: SubRoost
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Roost
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe

Moves
========

Substitute blocks status moves and weaker attacks including Scald from most Pokemon, such as Swampert. Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary method of inflicting damage against the metagame. Roost lets Zapdos offset Stealth Rock damage, and allows the Zapdos to outstall a good portion of the metagame alongside Toxic and Thunderbolt. Lastly, Toxic allows Zapdos to slowly wear down its foes while it hides safely behind the Substitute.

Set Details
========

It is important to note that these EVs are very cuztomizable, as Zapdos also functions extremely well as a defensive, mixed, or specially defensive wall. An alternative defensive spread could use 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe. Referring to the listed EVs, 248 HP EVs maximize Zapdos's bulk whilst minimizing Stealth Rock damage. 84 Def EVs give Zapdos some added physical bulk, allowing it to take resisted and neutral physical hits a bit better. 176 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed up to positive-natured base 90 Speed Pokemon and get the Substitute off. This allows Zapdos to outspeed more common threats such as Entei, Lucario, Rotom-H, Toxicroak, Heracross, and Porygon Z. The Speed particularly lets Zapdos set up Substitute on the Rotom formes and Entei. Pressure is notable on this set for enabling Zapdos to effectively PP stall many different Pokemon such as Entei.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos is best used as a standard Subtoxic Pokemon. Switch in Zapdos on a resisted hit, and try to bring a little mayhem to your opponent's longevity metre. Toxic is especially effective at getting past the various special walls that Zapdos struggles against. One of the most important Pokemon that this set succeeds against is Wish + Protect Florges.

Team Options
========

This set is best used on semi-stall or balanced cores focusing around phazing and passive pressure. Zapdos is usually supported well by a physical wallbreaker than can force its way past the few special walls that Zapdos struggles against, such as Umbreon and Blissey. Therefore, Cobalion and Swampert make great partners, as well as Florges and Whimsicott in order to have a proper Dragon-type check. Zapdos prefers to not have to switch into Stealth Rock, as this vastly minimizes its long-term potential, so entry hazard control is preferred via Empoleon, Forretress, Tentacruel, and Mega Blastoise.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Grass
move 4: Volt Switch / U-turn
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Static
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB move and will 2HKO most of the offensive metagame. Heat Wave is a standard coverage option that takes on bulkier Grass-types, Steel-types, and Mamoswine. Hidden Power Ice is a mandatory choice on this set due to its ability to reliably OHKO Salamence, Mega Sceptile, and Gligar, the latter of which walls this set if it doesn't run Hidden Power Ice. Hidden Power Ice also affects other Ground-types such as Nidoqueen, Nidoking, and Donphan, as well as other Dragon-types such as Hydreigon and Dragalge. Hidden Power Ice is also a decent last resort option against Moxie Salamence. Hidden Power Grass mainly targets Swampert and its Mega Evolution, but it may also be used against Krookodile and Donphan. It is important to note that Choice Scarf Zapdos outspeeds Adamant Mega Swampert and will OHKO it with Hidden Power Grass after some prior minor damage. Volt Switch is an incredibly effective pivoting move, allowing you to switch in the appropriate check or counter against the foe. U-turn can be used if Ground-types are complicating Zapdos's ability to pivot; however, the power drop is huge.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed investment is essential for the set in order to at least Speed tie +1 Salamence as well as outspeed other common Choice Scarf users such as Darmanitan and Hydreigon. Maximum Special Attack investment is also necessary in order to hit as hard as possible. Choice Scarf is the focal point of this set, letting Zapdos act as a standard special pivot and cleaner.

Usage Tips
========

Zapdos works somewhat decently as a lead against a good portion of the metagame, allowing you to pivot out to the appropriate teammate to take out the threat. Volt Switch is important to accumulate chip damage on special walls, which is helpful for teammates, as well as for Zapdos itself late-game. This set also functions perfectly as a revenge killer against Pokemon such as Hydreigon. This Zapdos operates mainly as a pivot for balance and offensive teams, and it also cleans up late-game.

Team Options
========

All offensive Zapdos sets are benefited by bulky Water-types such as Swampert, Suicune, Empoleon, and Tentacruel, which really appreciate Zapdos's ability to quickly pivot out to them. Almost every common balance Pokemon appreciates Zapdos's unique typing and ability to pivot into the appropriate Pokemon. Considering that these options range in variety and include walls, Calm Mind sweepers, and wallbreakers, Zapdos can find itself partnered with a variety of Pokemon, including Florges, Cobalion, Reuniclus, Snorlax, and Kyurem. Forretress, Empoleon, and Tentacruel are perfect partners in this regard.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Air Cutter
move 3: Heat Wave / Hidden Power Grass
move 4: Volt Switch
item: Choice Specs
ability: Static
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB move and will 2HKO most of the offensive metagame. This set is the only set that can properly utilize a Flying STAB in the form of Air Cutter, which tackles a decent portion of the metagame for reasonable damage, 2HKOing Pokemon such as Krookodile, Hydreigon, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, defensive Gligar after Stealth Rock, Kyurem after Stealth Rock, and Roserade. Heat Wave is mainly used to target the Steel-type Pokemon that won't get OHKOed by a Choice Specs boosted Thunderbolt, such as Cobalion. Alternatively, Hidden Power Grass mainly targets Swampert and its Mega Evolution, but may also be used against Krookodile, Mamoswine, and Donphan. Volt Switch is an incredibly effective pivoting move, allowing you to switch in the appropriate check or counter against the foe. It also provides excellent chip damage against Snorlax and other special walls such as Florges and Umbreon.

Set Details
========

Choice Specs packs incredible power behind Zapdos's moves, allowing it to 2HKO potential switch-ins such as Reuniclus, Bronzong, and Tyrantrum. Maximum Special Attack investment is also necessary in order to hit as hard as possible. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is essential for the set in order to at least Speed tie Salamence, as well as outspeed other common faster Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Heracross. Choice Specs maximizes Zapdos's potential to act as a wallbreaker and offensive pivot.

Usage Tips
========

This set is a fantastic mid-game option for its ability to operate as a wallbreaking pivot for balance and offensive teams, wearing down tanks and walls for other Pokemon to clean up or sweep. Zapdos works primarily as a wallbreaker and a minor defensive check against a few choice Pokemon such as Doublade and Cobalion. Since Zapdos will likely 2HKO a vast portion of the metagame, opponents will likely grant you opportunities to pivot out to the appropriate teammate to take out the threat.

Team Options
========

Offensive Zapdos sets are benefited by bulky Water-types such as Swampert, Suicune, Empoleon, and Tentacruel, which really appreciate Zapdos's ability to quickly pivot out to them. Offensively, Pokemon such as Choice Band Krookofile, Mienshao, and Entei serve to provide physical wallbreaking when Zapdos faces off against a special wall. Furthermore, since Zapdos is dedicated to a wallbreaking role, it can pair up with Pokemon such as Mega Sceptile and Mega Aerodactyl to clean up the threats that Zapdos damages. Entry hazard control ensures that Zapdos won't be racking up Stealth Rock damage. Further, opposing entry hazard damage will greatly increase Zapdos's opportunity for a late-game cleanup.

[SET]
name: AgiliPass
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Agility
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure / Static
nature: Timid
evs: 152 HP / 252 SpA / 104 Spe

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB move and is its main method of inflicting damage to the target. Agility increases Zapdos's Speed by two stages, which allows it to outspeed the entire metagame. Baton Pass is used to pass an Agility boost to an appropriate partner, in order to setup their sweep. Roost is used to offset Stealth Rock and switch in damage, and helps Zapdos setup more potential Agility passes.

Set Details
========

It must be prefaced that these EVs are very customizable, as Zapdos also functions extremely well as a defensive, mixed, or specially defensive wall. However, this set normally takes on a more offensive approach and could simply utilize maximum Speed and Special Attack for a more explosive setup. 252 Special Attack EVs maximize Zapdos's attacking power after using Agility. 104 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed all base 80 Pokemon and, more importantly, Gyarados. The rest of the 152 EVs are put into HP to improve Zapdos's ability to check Fighting-types. If the more recommended defensive route is taken, an alternative spread of 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe could be used to set up more long-term boosts.

Usage Tips
========

This set is deceptively simple to use, and the rewards are great. Bring in Zapdos when it is safe to get an Agility off. Most people's responses will be to go into their special walls or dedicated counters, allowing you to get a free Baton Pass.

Team Options
========

Defensive pivots such as Amoonguss and Forretress can easily find opportunities to bring in Zapdos, providing multiple chances to setup an Agility and Baton Pass it to a teammate such as Lucario or Feraligatr. In fact, these receivers of Agility can use Swords Dance sets in order to give themselves a Speed and power boost. Entry hazard control gives Zapdos more opportunities to come in. Empoleon, Forretress, Tentacruel, and Mega Blastoise all make fantastic partners in this respect. Mamoswine, Nidoqueen, and Machamp all enjoy the Speed boost provided by Agility and will be able to wreak havoc. It never hurts to be creative with the receivers of Agility. For example, Mega Camerupt with Growth becomes an absolute behemoth after such a boost.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Metal Sound + Roost set is perfectly viable utilizing Thunderbolt and another coverage option in Heat Wave or a Hidden Power move. Roar is a viable alternative option, especially if your team struggles against Calm Mind sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rock**: Zapdos is one of those Pokemon that really dislike having Stealth Rock on the field, even if it's the Defog set.

**Mamoswine**: Zapdos will almost always lose the one-on-one against Mamoswine, thus usually forcing it to switch out, with Hidden Power Grass being the only way to deal back any sort of damage to Mamoswine before being KOed.

**Setup Sweepers**: Zapdos struggles against Dragon Dance Salamence as well as Calm Mind sweepers. Even Suicune can take out Zapdos after one Calm Mind at full HP.

**Faster Pokemon**: Azelf, Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Beedrill, and Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Salamence, Darmanitan, and even Mienshao all put significant pressure on Zapdos's offensive sets and will sometimes be able to take out the defensive variants if Zapdos is too weak.

**Special Walls**: Blissey, Umbreon, and Florges can wall Zapdos all day long, although they won't be doing much back without some sort of status move such as Toxic.

subroost is better off with max speed cause hydreigon is a thing. the spread you have now doesnt even beat krooker :[

full defensive is also an option but speed is far more consistent imo tbh

and when you get to write some stuff, dugtrio is a pretty cool partner for that set cause its 100% walled by nidos and roserade, which dug can trap.

oh and specs is pretty cool too.

Zapdos is better off being slower than Krook so that it doesn't get caught on roost. The meta favours a slightly bulkier set. Dodmen and I settled on out speeding 90s, so that it can still take care of common threats such as heracross, entei, and other mons that hover in the upper 80-90 speed range (rotom, meloetta, mamo, chandelure). Ultimately, I think it's better for zap to risk losing its item to knock off and roosting turn one rather than being totally useless against krookodile.

Dugtrio is an interesting suggestion. Mamo is a big problem to the subroost set so I'm not sure if offensive minded options are ideal, but I'll run it past the other QC members.

I encourage you to add Mamoswine to this list of pokemon HP Grass hits because Mamo is probably the second most relevant pokemon HP grass is good for next to Swampert(Both Swampert and Mamo get free switch ins otherwise).

I would also encourage you to add Volt Switch as an option on the Bulky Defog set next to T Bolt / Discharge. A bulky Defoger with momentum is really useful and worth an add. To put into perspective, it works a lot like bulky Defog Mega Scizor in OU by using U-Turn.

I've only used the LO + 3 attacks and Choice Specs set, but I personally like the Specs set more because it doesn't get worn down as fast by LO recoil and Zapdos can find it hard to Roost sometimes. Also it frees up a slot for Volt Switch / U-turn. I know it's already mentioned in OO but I think it deserves its own set or at least a very strong mention in OO because it's really good

Cool, I'll follow up, thanks for your suggestion!

hey, so i think that non-lo options should be considered way more strongly on the offensive set. i dig that lo hits like a truck and all, i really do, but from past experience, you get tons of mileage out of alternative options, in a way that can't really be super adequately presented w/calcs. the thing w/zapdos is that, even with offensive sets, you're getting solid, inherent 'defensive value' from it by merit of natural bulk, good resists, consistent recovery, etc., and that's something that gets cut immensely by the lo recoil you're taking on a turn-per-turn basis. take for example playing this into a cune or something, you wanna keep it from boosting w/o apt punishment and you happen to get scald burned coming in. aside from the fact that you're now at 35% or so after sr, but now you're being put into a position wherein, between recoil and burn damage, you're being forced to roost almost every other turn or two in order to keep your head above the water, slicing it's theoretical proficiency against balance a ton. mind you, if you have some kinda alt scald switch, efficient hazard removal, etc., then perhaps you can actually be reaping the full benefits of lo's power w/o the scenario being flipped on you like that, but i just think that some consideration should really be given to that sort of issue. lefties can't really beat into stuff like lax and what have you like lo can, but backing it w/[t]spikes goes miles in alleviating that, and you can even like magnet / ebelt pretty effectively as a "middle ground" (not to feign choice, mind you, but to offer a boost in particular dmg output w/o the bulk-compromising effects of lo).

Hey King UU, I noticed you were using the old analysis format. I have provided the same skeleton with the new analysis format, so you can cut and paste this in your analysis.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Zapdos is unique with its Electric/Flying typing which, alongside with Roost, gives it the ability to fill multiple roles, including dedicated wallbreaker, cleaner, or wall.
  • Zapdos can be used on both offensive and defensive teams.
  • It is so customizable, that even the sets listed in this analysis do not do justice to its versatility.
  • Has usable bulk that allows it to check the appropriate threats for a variety of teammates.
  • Sports a fantastic Special Attack stat that allows it to power through a large portion of the tier with Life Orb or Choice Specs.
  • Hits a somewhat disappointing speed tier for an offensive minded set
  • Weak to one of the most common in the metagame, Mamoswine.
  • Does nothing against clerics with reliable recovery, such as Florges or Umbreon.
  • Faces competition from Rotom-H, which checks Mamoswine.
  • Weak to Stealth Rock, which is always a nuisance for any Pokemon in the UU tier.
  • However, a fantastic case of positives outweighing negatives; Zapdos is the shit
[SET]
name: Triple Attack + Roost
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers / Life Orb
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB, OHKOing many frail Pokemon and 2HKOing a large portion of the metagame bar special walls.
  • Heat Wave hits the Grass-, Steel-, Ice-, and Bug- types in the tier including, but not limited to, Shaymin, Cobalion, Mamoswine, and Galvantula, respectively.
  • Hidden Power Grass is mainly targetted towards Swampert and its mega variant, but may also be used against Krookodile, Mamoswine, and Donphan.
  • Hidden Power Ice is targeted towards Salamence and Gligar, the latter of which walls this set without Hidden Power Ice. It also affects other Ground-types such as Nidoqeen, Nidoking, and Donphan.
  • Roost is used to increase Zapdos's overall longevity throughout the game.
  • Volt Switch may be used over Heat Wave or Hidden Power if pivoting is more important than coverage.

Set Details
========
  • 252 Special Attack EVs maximizes Zapdos's power.
  • 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed many offensive threats including Hydreigon and Heracross.
  • The choice between items is entirely dependent on the user and the team you are building
  • Leftovers is an option for passive recovery, greatly increasing Zapdos's longterm longevity alongside Roost
  • Life Orb grants a decent power boost at the expense of recoil. It is a powerful option, but is equally represented by Magnet, which will 2HKO the same threats with Thunderbolt.
  • Expert Belt can also be used here and is a completely valid offensive option.

Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos is best use as a pseudo-offensive pivot, being able to take resisted hits, and, for the most part, respond with Roost + the appropriate offensive move.
  • This set is a moderately effective special wallbreaker, and should be saved for a moment in which it can take something out via revenge kill or wallbreaking.

Team Options
========
  • Pairs up fantastically with both offensive and balance cores
  • Almost all bulky Water-types love Zapdos's typing and typing synergy to compliment Pokemon such as Swampert, Suicune, Empoleon, and Tentacruel.
  • Almost every common balance mon appreciates Zapdos's unique typing and ability to offset prior damage, including Pokemon such as Florges, Cobalion, Reuniclus, Snorlax,
  • Offensively, Pokemon such as Krookofile, Mienshao, and Entei serve to provide physical wallbreaking when Zapdos faces off against a special wall.
  • Entry hazard control ensures that Zapdos won't be wracking up Stealth Rock damage. Further, opposing entry hazard damage will greatly increase Zapdos's opportunity for a late-game cleanup.
[SET]
name: Bulky Defog
move 1: Thunderbolt / Discharge
move 2: Roost
move 3: Defog
move 4: Heat Wave / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB, and can still 2hko a good portion of the Pokemon that Zapdos counters.
  • Discharge is a secondary option, as the 30% paralysis rate increases Zapdos's overall utility, however, Thunderbolt is generally the preferable option since you miss out on some important OHKOs and 2HKOs with Discharge. As a result, this option should only be used if long term paralysis fishing compliments the makeup of your team.
  • Roost greatly supports this set by giving Zapdos a reliable recovery option.
  • Defog removes hazards and is the overall point of this set.
  • Heat Wave compliments Zapdos's coverage, especially against Grass-types and Mamoswine.
  • Toxic is a fantastic option as well, applying passive pressure to all playing styles.

Set Details
========
  • 248 HP maximizes Zapdos's overalll bulk in relation to Stealth Rock damage. More HP EVs also increases the HO recovered each turn.
  • 236 Defense EVs with a Bold nature maximize Zapdos's overall bulk. The EVs here can be also be used for Special Defense. A mixed set using 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe with a Calm nature can be used to take on a wider variety of sets, although Zapdos's will no longer be able to counter the dedicated Pokemon it could, such as Mega Aerodactyl.
  • Leftovers increase Zapdos's passive recovery and longevity.
  • Pressure is a notable ability for this set as opposed to the more offensive options, since Roost can effectively stall out certain moves such as Fire Blast or Close Combat.

Usage Tips
========
  • Almost all Zapdos's can fit on bulky balance cores, and this Zapdos is no different whatsoever.
  • Operates effectively as a bulky defogger option which can also stallbreak against non-clerics.

Team Options
========
  • Completely dominated by setup sweepers, so phasers such as Swampert, Empoleon, and Suicune are extremely effective at preventing sweeps.
  • Furthermore, Pokemon such as Reuniclus and Florges love to set up Calm Minds against Zapdos, so having something like Choice Band Krook or Mega Aggron is a good idea to offset these threats.
  • This Zapdos set cannot do anything do Nidoqueen or Nidoking, and it struggles immensely against Mamoswine. A bulky Water-type option becomes that much more effective as a partner.
  • Other great partners include Choice Specs Chandelure or Kyurem for their ability to break past the Pokemon that this set struggles with; however, Chandelure is not a switch in for Pokemon such as Nidoqueen, rather, it is a strong wallbreaker which benefits from Zapdos's defensive typing.
[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Volt Switch / U-turn
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB and will 2HKO most of the offensive metagame
  • Heat Wave is a standard coverage option that takes on bulkier Grass-types, Steel-types, and Mamoswine.
  • Hidden Power Grass is mainly targetted towards Swampert and its mega variant, but may also be used against Krookodile and Donphan.
  • Important to note that Choice Scarf Zapdos outspeeds Adamant Mega Swampert and will OHKO with Hidden Power Grass after some prior minor damage.
  • Hidden Power Ice is targeted towards Salamence and Gligar, the latter of which walls this set without Hidden Power Ice. It also affects other Ground-types such as Nidoqeen, Nidoking, and Donphan. Hidden Power Ice is also a decent last resort option against Moxie-mence.
  • Volt Switch is an incredibly effective pivoting move, allowing you to switch into the appropriate check or counter against the foe.
  • U-turn is used if Ground-types are complicating Zapdos's ability to pivot, however, the power drop is huge.

Set Details
========
  • Maximum Speed investment is essential for the set in order to at least Speed-tie +1 Salamence, as well as outspeed other common Choice Scarf users such as Darmanitan or Hydreigon.
  • Maximum Special Attack investment is also necessary in order to hit as hard as possible.
  • Choice Scarf is the focal point of this set, acting as a standard Special pivot and cleaner.

Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos works somewhat decently as a lead against a good portion of the metagame, allowing you to pivot into the appropriate teammate to take out the threat.
  • Operates mainly as a pivot for balance and offensive teams.
  • Cleans up late game.

Team Options
========
  • As with the non-Choice Scarfed offensive set, this set also benefits from almost all bulky Water-types, which really appreciate Zapdos's ability to quick pivot into them. Such examples include to Pokemon such as Swampert, Suicune, Empoleon, and Tentacruel.
  • Almost every common balance Pokemon appreciates Zapdos's unique typing and ability to pivot into the appropriate Pokemon. Considering that these options range in variety, and include walls, Calm Mind sweepers, and wallbreakers, Zapdos can find itself partnered with a variety of Pokemon, including, but not limited to, Pokemon such as Florges, Cobalion, Reuniclus, Snorlax, and Kyurem.

[SET]
name: SubRoost
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Roost
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe

Moves
========
  • Substitute works around status moves and weaker attacks including Scald from most Pokemon, such as Swampert.
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary method of inflicting damage against the metagame.
  • Roost offsets Stealth Rock damage, as well as any switch in damage, and allows the Zapdos to outstall a good portion of the metagame alongside Toxic and Thunderbolt.
  • Lastly, Toxic is a classic move on this set, allowing Zapdos to slowly wear down its opponents while it hides safely behind the Substitute.

Set Details
========
  • It is important to note that these EVs are very interchangeable, as Zapdos also functions extremely well as a defensive, mixed, or specially defensive wall.
  • An alternative defensive spread could use these EVs: 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe
  • Referring to the listed EVs, 248 HP EVs maximize Zapdos's bulk whilst minimizing Stealth Rock damage.
  • 84 Def EVs give Zapdos some added physical bulk, allowing it to take physically resisted and neutral hits a bit better.
  • 176 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed up to positive-natured base 90 Speed Pokemon and get the Substitute off. This allows Zapdos to outspeed more common threats such as Entei or Porygon Z.
  • Pressure is notable on this set for being able to effectively PP stall many different Pokemon, especially Special Walls.

Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos is best used as a standard Subtoxic Pokemon.
  • Switch in Zapdos on a resisted hit and try to bring a little mayhem to your opponent's longevity metre.
  • Toxic is especially effective at getting past the vast special walls that Zapdos struggles against.

Team Options
========
  • Best used on semi-stall or balanced cores focusing around phasing and passive pressure.
  • Usually supported well by a singular wallbreaker than get physically get past the few Special walls that Zapdos struggles against, such as Umbreon.
  • As such, Cobalion and Swampert make great partners, as well as Florges/Whimsicott in order to have a proper Dragon-type check.
  • Zapdos prefers to not have to switch into Stealth Rock, as this vastly minimizes its longterm potential, so entry hazard control is preferred via Empoleon, Forretress, Tentacruel, or Blastoise.
[SET]
name: Agilipass
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Agility
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Spe (open to discussion)

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB and is its main method of inflicting damage to the tier.
  • Agility increases Zapdos's speed by 2x, outspeeding the entire UU metagame.
  • Baton Pass is used to pass an Agility boost to an appropriate partner, in order to setup their sweep.
  • Roost is used to offset Stealth Rock and switch in damage, and helps Zapdos setup more potential Agility passes.

Set Details
========
  • Similar to the Subtoxic set, it must be prefaced that these EVs are very interchangeable, as Zapdos also functions extremely well as a defensive, mixed, or specially defensive wall.
  • In fact, this set can even take on a more offensive approach and simply utilize maximum Speed and Special Attack for more immediate firepower.
  • However, if the more recommended defensive route is taken, an alternative defensive spread could use these EVs: 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe
  • 248 HP EVs maximize Zapdos's bulk whilst minimizing Stealth Rock damage.

Usage Tips
========
  • This set is deceptively simple to use, and the rewards are great.
  • Bring in Zapdos when it is safe to get an Agility off. Most people's responses will be to go into their Special walls or dedicated counters, allowing you to get a free Baton Pass.
Team Options
========
  • Defensive pivots such as Amoonguss or Forretress can easily find opportunities to bring in Zapdos, providing multiple opportunities to setup an Agility and Baton Pass it to a teammate such as Lucario or Feraligatr.
  • In fact, the aforementioned receivers of Agility can use Swords Dance sets in order to give themselves a Speed and power boost.
  • As always, entry hazard control gives Zapdos more opportunities to come in. Empoleon, Forretress, Tentacruel, and Mega Blastoise all make fantastic partners in this respect.
  • Mamoswine, Nidoqueen, and Machamp all enjoy the Speed boost provided by Agility, and will be able to wreak havoc.
  • It never hurts to be creative with the receivers of Agility. For example, Mega Camerupt with Growth becomes an absolute behemoth after such a bo

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rocks**: Zapdos is one of those Pokemon that really dislikes having Stealth Rock on the field, even if its the defog set. Mamoswine, in specific, puts major pressure on Zapdos, usually forcing it to switch.

**Setup Sweepers**: Almost all Zapdos's struggle against Salamence setups as well as Calm Mind sweepers. Even Suicune can take out Zapdos after one Calm Mind at full HP.

**Faster Pokemon**: Azelf, Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Beedrill, and Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Salamence, Darmanitan, and even Mienshao all put significant pressure on Zapdos's offensive sets, and will sometimes be able to take out the defensive variants if Zapdos is too weak.

**Special Walls**: Blissey, Umbreon, and Florges can wall Zapdos all day long, although they won't be doing much back without some sort of status move such as Toxic.

Three attacks:

Hydreigon is one of HP Ice's most important targets, so that should be listed before anything else. It also hits Mega Sceptile.

Tentacruel is probably the best hazard remover to go with Zapdos, its TSpikes put a ton of pressure on fat stuff like Florges Umbreon P2. Empoleon is another good option, so these should be listed specifically. Also needs to be said that reliable hazard removal allows Zapdos to carry LO a bit more freely, guess this would go in Usage Tips.

The wording for the items is a bit weird, it should go something like: Leftovers helps retain its longevity & preventing it from becoming overly reliant on Roost; Life Orb pressures special walls quite a bit harder, but severely cuts into its health, preventing it from throwing out attacks as frequently and making it harder to check Doublade and co. Options like Magnet and Expert Belt alleviate this while providing a moderate boost to some of Zapdos's attacks.

Phys Def:

I think list what OHKOs/2HKOs you miss out on with Discharge. Specify what Toxic does - it's mostly to avoid a stalemate with P2, Cress, and opposing Zapdos though it's also helpful for whittling down stuff like Hydreigon/Krookodile/Swampert/Kyurem in the long run.

Zapdos cannot counter Mega Aerodactyl lol, replace that with something more appropriate. Also make a quick note of what the Speed does.

Expand on Usage Tips - it can safely come in on a number of Stealth Rock users like Krookodile and Mega Aggron or Defog later in the game against various physical attackers like Heracross, Cobalion, and Honchkrow. Zapdos also does not stallbreak so remove that bit.

SubRoost

The Speed particularly lets it outspeed key threats like Lucario and Toxicroak and Sub on the Rotom formes and Entei (can waste all Sacred Fire PP and come out with near full health if you started near 100%).

A key part of this set is being able to beat non-CM Florges 1v1, even CM variants are hassled a lot between being forced to Aromatherapy and waste Moonblast PP.

Scarf

Again, Hydreigon is a key target of HP Ice. Volt Switch is important to accumulate chip damage on special walls which is helpful for teammates as well as Zapdos itself late game. This can be elaborated in Usage Tips.

In Usage Tips I'd also focus on its revenge killing capabilities in addition to its pivoting ones. Team Options: same thing goes for Tentacruel and Empoleon, Forretress is another good partner with Spikes.

Specs

Elaborate on Air Cutter. It 2HKOs several offensive HP Ice/Grass targets without being dependent on which HP - Krookodile, Hydreigon, Nidos, phys def Gligar after SR, Kyurem after SR (which walls any other set), and Roserade. Same thing with Volt Switch from Scarf, it provides exceptional free chip damage on Florges Snorax etc, which will be heavily appreciated by faster teammates.

Set Details: "Choice Specs packs incredible power behind Zapdos's moves, allowing it to 2HKO potential switchins such as Reuniclus, Bronzong, and Tyrantrum."

Honestly these Team Options should be much different from Choice Scarf's. Specs Zapdos's team can focus on the damage Zapdos forces onto special walls, pairing it up with stuff like Mega Sceptile to take advantage of weakened Florges and P2 for example. CB Krookodile an excellent partner as well as it takes full advantage of the Volt Switch out of special walls, same goes for Machamp and Mamoswine (definitely put Crawdaunt here later too i m o). TSpikes and Spikes are fantastic as well punishing these switches even further, Tentacruel again in particular. Overall Specs Zapdos would fit much better on bulky offense than Scarf Zapdos.

Agilipass looks good. Roar in OO.

OK now the Overview. It does a good job highlighting how versatile Zapdos can be, though some of the wording can be clearer ("can fit on a variety of playstyles/teams" instead of "offensive or defensive teams"), and "pivot" can be added to the list of roles it perferms. You should definitely list out a couple important threats that Zapdos checks: Cobalion, Crobat, Doublade, NP Lucario. "Weak to Mamoswine" doesn't really need to be there. Snorlax can be added to the list of Pokemon it can't do anything to. Also, I think you should add that it's rather prone to being worn down as it tries to perform its various roles from switching into Stealth Rock, Scald, Fighting types, etc.

let me know if I missed anything. I actually mention tenta emp and forry everywhere you wanted me to mention, so let me know if I need to get more specific.

Also, not really sure if the changes to specs team options are sufficient. let me know.

good stuff, QC 1/3

e: wait i just realized there's no offensive agility set. i don't think defensive agili pass needs to be the main thing anyway so offensive agility with tbolt hp ice and roost / baton pass / heat wave should replace the current agility one.

e2: ok now 1/3

[OVERVIEW]
  • Zapdos is unique with its Electric/Flying typing which, alongside with Roost, gives it the ability to fill multiple roles, including dedicated wallbreaker, cleaner, or wall.
  • Zapdos can fit on a variety of playstyles/teams.
  • Hits a somewhat disappointing speed tier for an offensive minded set.
  • However, still functions very well as a pivot in addition to its offensive capabilities.
  • Checks important metagame threats such as Cobalion, Crobat, Doublade, Heracross, and Lucario.
  • Does nothing against clerics with reliable recovery, such as Florges or Umbreon.
  • Also completely struggles against Reuniclus and Snorlax.
  • Faces competition from Rotom-H, which checks Mamoswine.
  • Weak to Stealth Rock, which is always a nuisance for any Pokemon in the UU tier.
  • Zapdos is also prone to being wore down due to the plethora of attackers it tends to regularly check.
  • However, Zapdos is a fantastic case of positives outweighing negatives.

[SET]
name: Triple Attack + Roost
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers / Magnet
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Hidden Power Ice is targeted towards Salamence, Mega Sceptile, Hydreigon, and Gligar, the latter of which walls this set without Hidden Power Ice. It also affects other Ground-types such as Nidoqeen, Nidoking, and Donphan.
  • Roost is used to increase Zapdos's overall longevity throughout the game.
  • Volt Switch may be used over Heat Wave or Hidden Power if pivoting is more important than coverage.

Set Details
========
  • 252 Special Attack EVs maximizes Zapdos's power.
  • 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed many offensive threats including Hydreigon and Heracross.
  • The choice between items is entirely dependent on the user and the team you are building
  • Leftovers helps Zapdos retain its longevity and prevents it from becoming overly reliant on Roost
  • Life Orb pressures special walls quite a bit harder, but severely cuts into its health, preventing it from throwing out attacks as frequently and making it harder to check options such as Doublade and other priority users.
  • Options like Magnet and Expert Belt alleviate this while providing a moderate boost to some of Zapdos's attacks.

Usage Tips
========
Mention that while it is a really good pivot, it has to be careful of incoming strong neutral hits as, with Stealth Rock up, Zapdos has a hard time continously pivoting / answering with the common coverage whenever it has to be forced to Roost.

Team Options
========
  • Pairs up fantastically with both offensive and balance cores Give examples here, such as Mega Beedrill, Florges + Mega Aggron, and...
Further, opposing entry hazard damage will greatly increase Zapdos's opportunity for a late-game cleanup. ...here, such as Forretress, Tentacruel, and Mamoswine (for entry hazard damage that is)

move 2: Roost
move 3: Defog
move 4: Heat Wave / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB, and can still 2HKO a good portion of the Pokemon that Zapdos counters.
  • Discharge is a secondary option, as the 30% paralysis rate increases Zapdos's overall utility, however, Thunderbolt is generally the preferable option since you miss out on some important OHKOs such as Crobat, or 2HKOs, such as Salamence. As a result, this option should only be used if long-term paralysis-fishing compliments the makeup of your team.
Toxic also prevents Zapdos from being walled by Pokemon such as Cresselia.
  • Toxic also pressures offensive Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Kyurem.

Set Details
========
  • Leftovers increase Zapdos's passive recovery and longevity.
  • Pressure is a notable ability for this set as opposed to the more offensive options, since Roost can effectively stall out certain moves such as Fire Blast or Close Combat.

Usage Tips
========
  • Almost all Zapdos's can fit on bulky balance cores, and this Zapdos is no different whatsoever.
  • Operates effectively as a bulky defogger option which can also pressure many offensive and defensive cores with Toxic stall.
  • Can switch into many common Stealth Rock users such as Krookodile and Mega Aggron or mid-game against physical attackers such as Heracross and Honchkrow.

Team Options
========
  • Completely dominated by setup sweepers, so phasers such as Swampert, Empoleon, and Suicune are extremely effective at preventing sweeps.
  • Tentacruel is a great partner, as it is able to set up Toxic Spikes and pressure Pokemon such as Porygon 2, Florges, and Umbreon.

  • U-turn is used if Ground-types are complicating Zapdos's ability to pivot, however, the power drop is huge.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos works somewhat decently as a lead against a good portion of the metagame, allowing you to pivot into the appropriate teammate to take out the threat.
  • Volt Switch is important to accumulate chip damage on special walls which is helpful for teammates, as well as Zapdos itself late game.
  • This set also functions perfectly as a revenge killer against Pokemon such as Hydreigon.
  • Operates mainly as a pivot for balance and offensive teams.
  • Cleans up late game.

Team Options
========
Forretress, Empoleon, and Tentacruel are perfect partners in this regard.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Air Cutter
move 3: Heat Wave / Hidden Power Grass
move 4: Volt Switch
item: Choice Specs
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB and will 2HKO most of the offensive metagame
  • This set is the only set that can properly utilize a Flying STAB in the form of Air Cutter, which tackles a decent portion of the metagame for reasonable damage.
  • Air Cutter 2HKOs Pokemon such as Krookodile, Hydreigon, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, defensive Gligar after Stealth Rock, Kyurem after Stealth Rock, and Roserade.
  • Heat Wave is mainly used to target the Steel-type Pokemon that won't get OHKOed by a Choice Specs Thunderbolt, such as Cobalion.
  • Hidden Power Grass is mainly targetted towards Swampert and its mega variant, but may also be used against Krookodile, Mamoswine, and Donphan.
  • Volt Switch is an incredibly effective pivoting move, allowing you to switch into the appropriate check or counter against the foe. It also provides excellent chip damage against Snorlax.

Set Details
========
  • Choice Specs packs incredible power behind Zapdos's moves, allowing it to 2HKO potential switchins such as Reuniclus, Bronzong, and Tyrantrum.
  • Maximum Special Attack investment is also necessary in order to hit as hard as possible.
  • Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is essential for the set in order to at least Speed-tie Salamence, as well as outspeed other common faster Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Heracross.
  • Choice Specs is the focal point of this set, acting as a wallbreaker and offensive pivot.

Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos works primarily as a wallbreaker, and a minor defensive check against a few choice Pokemon such as Doublade or Cobalion. Since it'll likely 2HKO a vast portion of the metagame, opponents will likely grant you opportunities to pivot into the appropriate teammate to take out the threat.
  • Operates mainly as a wallbreaking pivot for balance and offensive teams.
  • A fantastic mid-game option. Explain why it is fantastic for mid-game (walls are worn down, etc.)

Team Options
========
  • Similar to the standard offensive set, this set also benefits from almost all bulky Water-types, which really appreciate Zapdos's ability to pivot into them.
  • Offensively, Pokemon such as Choice Band Krookofile, Mienshao, and Entei serve to provide physical wallbreaking when Zapdos faces off against a special wall.
  • Furthermore, since Zapdos is dedicated to a wallbreaking role, it can pair up with Pokemon such as Mega Sceptile or Mega Aerodactyl to clean up the threats that Zapdos damages.
  • Entry hazard control ensures that Zapdos won't be wracking up Stealth Rock damage. Further, opposing entry hazard damage will greatly increase Zapdos's opportunity for a late-game cleanup.

[SET]
name: Agilipass
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Agility
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 152 HP / 252 SpA / 104 Spe

Moves
========
  • Thunderbolt is Zapdos's primary STAB and is its main method of inflicting damage to the tier.
  • Agility increases Zapdos's speed by two stages, which allows it to outspeed the entire metagame.
  • Baton Pass is used to pass an Agility boost to an appropriate partner, in order to setup their sweep.
  • Roost is used to offset Stealth Rock and switch in damage, and helps Zapdos setup more potential Agility passes.

Set Details
========
  • It must be prefaced that these EVs are very interchangeable, as Zapdos also functions extremely well as a defensive, mixed, or specially defensive wall.
  • However, this set normally takes on a more offensive approach and could simply utilize maximum Speed and Special Attack for a more explosive setup.
  • 252 SpA EVs maximize Zapdos's attacking power after using Agility.
  • 104 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outspeed all base 80 Pokemon, and, more importantly, Gyarados. Mention here that it can go with a Modest nature and still outspeed Jolly Unburden Slurpuff at +2 if you want Zapdos to take advantage of Agility.
  • The rest of the 152 EVs are put into HP to maximize Zapdos's offensive and defensive capabilities.
  • If the more recommended defensive route is taken, an alternative spread of 248 HP / 140 Def / 96 SpD / 24 Spe could be used to set up more long-term boosts.

Usage Tips
========
  • This set is deceptively simple to use, and the rewards are great.
  • Bring in Zapdos when it is safe to get an Agility off. Most people's responses will be to go into their Special walls or dedicated counters, allowing you to get a free Baton Pass.

Team Options
========
For example, Mega Camerupt with Growth becomes an absolute behemoth after such a boost.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • A Metal Sound + Roost set is perfectly viable alongside Thunderbolt and another coverage option in Heat Wave or a Hidden Power move.
  • Roar is a great example of a viable alternative option, especially if your team struggles against Calm Mind sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

Small check (in bold), but you did really well the first time around! QC 2/3 if some official QC member agrees! :P

completed all of NVs changes except for the Modest mention in Agility set, since outspeeding Gyarados is an absolute must and losing the HP bulk due to modest (you have to put more speed without timid to hit 288) really minimizes the longterm utility of this set. However, if a QC member disagrees, I'll make the mention.

went through this w/ king on skype. will probably do some final touches later this week before giving it the 3rd check, mainly because i'm not that sold on subtoxic and have no experience with agility pass rn, but it's looking pretty good so far anyway

adding that we made edits to first set, adding Metal Sound to Set Details as an honourable mention. We flipped HP Grass for HP Ice as primary slot in Scarf set for the reasons listed in the set, and the main discussion behind subtoxic is whether or not it is too similar to defog set. Some of the major differences lies in SubToxic Zap's ability to handle stuff like Entei's Sacred Fire PP, but pearl, and admittedly myself, are unsure if this is enough of a difference to warrant its own set.

Discussion and opinions are welcome at this point.

Obviously not QC, but it would probably be good to mention what 24 Speed EVs outpaces on the Bulky Defog set, and maybe me posting here will put some progress in motion, it being the case that this analysis has been in the works since before i joined the site 0_0

This looks really nice, man.

I just have a few things for you to add:
  • Mention in the Set Details of the defensive Defog set that the spread of 248 / 84 def / 176 timid(same EVs on sub roost set) is also useable to outspeed key offensive threats like entei and lucario.
  • Also mention in the set details that HP ice and grass are viable in replace of HW/Toxic since that slot is very team dependent and should be able to hit Pokemon that the player's team is weak to.

After those additions, QC 3/3
