Zapdos (QC 3/3) [GP: 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]
Zapdos has a great defensive typing and solid bulk that make it one of the premier setters of Tailwind in the tier. A base 125 Special Attack stat allows it to never be too passive on the field after setting Tailwind; in addition, it has access to Roost to keep itself healthy. However, Zapdos faces heavy competition from Thundurus, a support Electric-type with Prankster and access to Taunt, though Zapdos has more bulk and Tailwind to differentiate itself. Although Zapdos has few weaknesses, it is checked offensively by common threats such as Mega Diancie and Kyurem-B and walled by Pokemon that resist Electric and don't take much from its coverage moves such as Amoonguss.

[SET]
name: Bulky Tailwind
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Tailwind
move 3: Hidden Power Ice / Heat Wave
move 4: Roost

nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 32 Def / 84 SpA / 124 SpD / 16 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
Thunderbolt hits Water- and Flying-types for super effective damage and chips away at neutral foes due to Zapdos's respectable Special Attack stat. Tailwind allows Zapdos to support its team, doubling their Speed for three turns. This swings momentum in your team's favor, allowing Pokemon with middling to fast Speed to wreak havoc on the opposing side. Hidden Power Ice hits Landorus-T and Dragon-types such as Salamence, Latios, and Hydreigon for more damage than Thunderbolt. Heat Wave dents Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and provides spread damage; however, the move is somewhat weak, as it fails to break Kyurem-B's Substitute. Roost provides recovery, and the extra longevity enables Zapdos to set up Tailwind multiple times in the match and check threats more reliably. Roost also removes Zapdos's Flying typing, allowing it to stay in on Rock- and Ice-types that it outspeeds.

Set Details
========
Rocky Helmet punishes physical attackers such as Mega Kangaskhan when they hit Zapdos, which allows Zapdos to rack up consistent residual damage on these Pokemon as it recovers with Roost. Sitrus Berry is a staple item in Doubles for bulkier Pokemon, providing a burst of recovery and increasing Zapdos's lifespan. Safety Goggles can also be used to ignore Spore and Rage Powder from Pokemon like Breloom and Amoonguss, making Zapdos an effective switch-in to both. The EV spread allows Zapdos to take two Rock Slides from Adamant Landorus-T after spread reduction and two Ice Beams from Modest Ludicolo. The Speed investment allows Zapdos to outspeed neutral-natured base 70 Pokemon such as Bisharp. The rest of the EVs are pumped into Special Attack along with a Modest nature in order to increase Zapdos's offensive presence.

Usage Tips
========
Zapdos's bulk allows it to be easily switched in during the middle of the game to swing the momentum in your favor. Zapdos is also an effective lead against Mega Kangaskhan, threatening Rocky Helmet recoil damage if Mega Kangaskhan uses Fake Out on it. Use Roost liberally against Pokemon that Zapdos either threatens out or that can't harm it if you are predicting Protect or a switch out in order to keep Zapdos healthy. Zapdos gives a solid defensive backbone to a team with its excellent bulk and recovery, so utilize that by switching it into common threats such as Talonflame and Fighting-type moves from Pokemon such as Virizion. Tailwind is far from the only option on the first turn; attack if it makes more sense to do so.

Team Options
========
Mega Charizard Y aids Zapdos with sun for its Heat Wave, allowing it to break Kyurem-B's Substitute, and it appreciates the Tailwind Zapdos provides. Zapdos also beats one of the most common checks to sun teams: Talonflame. Fake Out users such as Mega Kangaskhan and Infernape and redirection users such as Jirachi help Zapdos set up Tailwind more easily. Steel-types like Aegislash and Mega Metagross take on Dragon-types and Mega Diancie, two of Zapdos's more difficult matchups. Hard hitters that appreciate Tailwind such as Hoopa-U, Mega Gardevoir, and Mega Kangaskhan are able to devastate the opponent's team with their Speed stat doubled. Fighting-types such as Keldeo are able to deal with Ice- and Rock-types such as Kyurem-B and Terrakion that threaten Zapdos with their STAB attacks. Breloom is one of Zapdos's best partners, working extremely well under Tailwind with its ability to incapacitate opposing Pokemon with fast Spores.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Yache Berry is an option to take an Ice-type attack such as Kyurem-B's Ice Beam better, allowing Zapdos to set Tailwind in a pinch. Similarly, Charti Berry allows Zapdos to take a Rock-type attack more comfortably, but it suffers from being activated on a weaker hit such as Rock Slide. Light Screen improves Zapdos's team's Special Defense but leaves Zapdos either much more passive without an extra coverage move or with reduced longevity if Roost is dropped. Thunder Wave is an alternative option for speed control, but most of the time, Thundurus is the better option if Tailwind is not used. Swagger is a way to potentially dodge taking hits that Zapdos wouldn't want to take but is heavily luck based and unreliable. Volt Switch allows Zapdos to switch out after setting up Tailwind and can be used to bring in a heavy-hitting teammate with more safety. Roar stops Trick Room and setup sweepers from running wild.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Typing Advantage:** Rock-types with powerful STAB attacks such as Mega Diancie and Terrakion deal massive damage to Zapdos. Dragon-types that aren't 4x weak to Hidden Power Ice such as Hydreigon and Latios beat Zapdos with their powerful attacks, though Zapdos can Roost on them if they are at -2 Special Attack due to Draco Meteor. Kyurem-B is Zapdos's best counter, as it switches into all of Zapdos's attacks taking little to no damage, sets up free Substitutes on it, and does a ton with Ice Beam. Ground-types that aren't weak to Hidden Power Ice or take little damage from it regardless, such as Mega Swampert, easily take on Zapdos.

**Utility**: Lightning Rod Pokemon such as Rhydon redirect Zapdos's Thunderbolts and nullify most of its offensive potential. Taunt users such as Thundurus and Sableye prevent Zapdos from setting up Tailwind, which is its main job.

O hey I still exist!

OV
  • Tell me why Thundurus is better, even if just a line. Also don't use the -I thingie, Spelling & Grammar Standards
  • Mention getting bopped by Mega Diansy and Drags, with a special note of Kyu-B in particular.
Set
  • Your set creeps Bisharp by two points. please removed 4 Speed EVs and put that to SpA tnx
Moves
  • "Thunderbolt is a reliable STAB move that hits Water and Flying-types for SE damage and chips away at neutral foes" - Rephrase this to "Thunderbolt gives Zapdos a reliable attack and hits yadayada" as the way it is right now, it's basically like "crux of the set" and "good stab" which we all know is bad; the difference is subtle but it's there, and ideally we should just tell what the move does. It'd be cool if you mention examples of waters and flyings too
  • You should mention that HP Ice also lets you do something against stuff like Latios and Hydrei, at least.
  • Roost doesn't help Zapdos set TW multiple times and check threats much more easily. The longevity it provides does. Semantics. Do include that point.
SD
  • "Rocky Helmet punishes physical attackers such as Mega Kangaskhan when they hit you" *Zapdos
  • Mention the Modest nature somewhere fam, preferably lump it with the SpA EVs bullet.
UT
  • Tell the reader why use this over Thund. Bulk and TW + other things you can think of if you can
  • Zap can be useful for taking advantage its bulk and functioning as a solid switch in for shit, and be a cool defensive backbone lal
  • Say something about fucking with Kang (and physical attackers in general but kanga is lol) using Rocky Helm
TO
  • Mention MegaGross over Ferro on steels because MegaGross can actually take advantage of TW and is thus a better partner and example fam
  • when you mention things that like TW, mentioning kanga, even if you already did earlier, is a no-brainer.
  • "Fighting-types such as Keldeo to deal with Ice and Rock-types" Like what Ice- and Rock-types?(not named Mega Diancie because lol)
OO
  • cool
C&C
  • Mention Ground-types last because in no way are Grounds not named Landorus-T namedrop worthy for an analysis
  • "Rock types with powerful STAB such as MDiancie and Terrakion deal massive damage with their moves" with their *STAB moves
  • Mention users of Taunt
1/3 if did

check's check
implement if you want/if someone stamps. Idk how this works exactly
[OVERVIEW]
  • "Faces heavy competition from Thundurus as a support Electric-type, with Thundurus having Prankster and Taunt over Zap"
    • mention "prankster thunder wave and taunt"? the reason it'd be competition is because both are speed control
  • Beat by common metagame threats such as Mega Diancie and Kyurem-B
    • it's offensively beaten by these, maybe mention some things that wall it, ie grasses (amoonguss) or dragons such as latios and hydreigon? I know you have hp ice but that isn't exactly a big damage dealer, also it's already mentioned later but things its walled by is overview worthy imo
Usage Tips
========
  • Zapdos's bulk allows it to be easily brought in during the middle of the game to swing the speed into your favor
    • maybe elaborate that it can also be used as a lead into seeing kang if you have rocky helmet
  • "...out in order to keep zap zap healthy"?
  • Zapdos gives a solid defensive backbone to a team with its excellent bulk and recovery, so utilize that if possible
    • mention things it likes to switch into? talonflame, kang fake outs, fighting moves

Team Options
========
  • Charizard Y provides Zapdos sun for heat wave, allowing it to break Kyurem-b's substitutes, while also appreciating the TW it provides
    • zapdos beats talonflame, common sun check. Also breaks subs on heatran (idk if this is too much elaboration for an analysis)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • do all these deserve mentions? excluding roar. Roar is kinda neat, also maybe mention protect. I would get rid of yache, screens, swagger, dischrage
Checks and Counters
===================

Typing Advantage:
  • mention grasses such as amoonguss/ferro as walling zappy

hope that helps n_n

^do that, lots of good stuff in there. Couple of other things:

Moves:
  • Your sentence about Tailwind reads strangely - maybe change to say "Tailwind allows Zapdos to support its team" instead of "...to control the speed of its team"
  • Roost also removes Zapdos' Flying-type, allowing Zapdos to stay in on Rock- and Ice-type attackers that it outspeeds without fear of a super effective hit
Usage Tips
  • "Use Roost liberally against on Pokemon..."
  • Mention that Tailwind is far from the only option to click even if Zapdos is out and it's not set, I'm tired of seeing Turn 1 TW when attacking makes way more sense
Team Options
  • Redirectors like Jirachi to improve the ability to set TW
OO
  • Leave Yache and Light Screen, I'm fine with removing Discharge though
  • Add Charti and Drill Peck lol
  • Thunder if you're using it on Rain for some reason
Do check's check (save for the removal of Yache and Light Screen) and mine and then let me know so I can ok it to be written up n_n

Do for 3/3! :P

Moves
  • "Roost also removes the Flying-type of Zapdos, allowing it to fearlessly stay in on Rock and Ice-types that it outspeeds." - you don't exactly "stay in fearlessly" on Rock- and Ice-types with Roost, especially since Kyurem-B still freely Subs up. Remove the word "fearlessly" and change "types" to "type moves" to fix this. Also the first part is a bit clunky, change "the Flying-type of Zapdos" to "Zapdos's Flying-type".
Set Details
  • "2 Ludicolo Ice Beams" - change "2" to "two" (haha) and add that it's Modest.
Other Options
  • Don't mention Thunder, I've never heard of Zapdos rain, probably because of how outclassed it is by Thundurus :B (also spoke to tree about it who had suggested it originally - musta been drunk y/n).
  • Move the Charti Berry mention to right after Yache Berry for better flow.
Checks and Counters
  • Remove mention of Mamoswine as it's unviable.

Hey qsns you got Yoda's 3rd check about 2 weeks ago... is it implemented? I'd like to get this sent to GP asap

Also, one last thing I noticed: you talk about Zapdos being able to take two Lando-T Rock Slides or two Ludicolo Ice Beams, but you should specify that you mean without the help of a Sitrus Berry. With a Sitrus Berry, the spread allows Zapdos to take two Mega Metagross Zen Headbutts or two LO Aegis Shadow Balls.

Fix that and then send this to GP when you get the chance - I know you have SPL going on so I understand if it's taking a while but this isn't too much so hopefully you can find the time n_n

holy shit i thought i had to write this up and i was just really not looking forward to that and i've been very busy lmfao sorry other qc members for being a huge pain in the ass

took 2 minutes and implemented, ready for gp

Hidden Power Ice allows Zapdos to hit Landorus-T and 4x weak Dragon-types technically it hits all Dragon-types harder other than some rare exceptions and 4x-weak should be a compound adjective....I think?
