This is the basic Exeggutor. Don't Sleep Powder until you've scouted out the opponent's team; otherwise you're going to just put a Sleep Talker to sleep. Psychic and Giga Drain get STAB and use Exeggutor's Special Attack. Giga Drain is also useful against Ground, Rock, and Water Pokemon. If Tyranitar doesn't have Crunch, Flamethrower, or Fire Blast, Exeggutor will beat it with Giga Drain one on one while sustaining very little (if any) net loss of HP. When something your opponent has is being annoying or if Exeggutor gets low on health, Explode and you're bound to take something down with you, as long as it doesn't resist or is immune to Normal. Therefore, the key to using Explosion is to use it at a time when your opponent is not expecting at all.
Other Options
Stun Spore is very useful for spreading paralysis support around the field. You can put Stun Spore over Giga Drain if it suits you for some double powder action. Leech Seed is another popular move and can be paired with Moonlight, Protect, Reflect, or Substitute to stall out things like Snorlax and Blissey. There's also Hidden Power Fire for Skarmory and Forretress if that's your type of thing.
Opinion
Exeggutor is one of the best Grass-types and Pokemon in the game. Its resistances to Thunderbolt, Surf, and Earthquake suit it wonderfully, and it is good at both attacking and speading status around via Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. Exeggutor is also one of the only Grass-types that can attack well and still have decent Defense. It has many different options and can play a few different roles on a team, so be prepared.
Counters
Skarmory and Forretress are resistant to both of Exeggutor's STAB moves and don't care about Explosion either (Hidden Power Fire is a concern though), and can hit it back super effectively. Houndoom fears Explosion, but can Pursuit Exeggutor on the switch or hit it with Fire Blast for the OHKO. Umbreon's high Special Defense allows it to lock Exeggutor in with Mean Look and pass to a more suitable counter. Zapdos and Raikou counter Exeggutor with Drill Peck and Crunch, respectively.
Watch out, though, as most Exeggutor carry Explosion, so some of these counters might go down with it.
