Curselax

Leftovers
Moveset
~ Curse
~ Double-Edge
~ Rest
~ Earthquake

The old Curselax. Probably one of the most famous sets in Pokémon history. Curse patches up Snorlax's sub-par Defense and bolsters his already-high attack. From there, Double-Edge will probably kill just about everything that doesn't resist it. Earthquake Rhydon, Tyranitar, Gengar, and other normal resistors for loads of laughs.

Name Item

Starterlax

Leftovers / Quick Claw
Moveset
~ Fire Blast
~ Body Slam
~ Selfdestruct
~ Earthquake

This moveset is capable of taking down half of a team if it is played right. Fire Blast keeps Steel-types at bay, and will put a good dent in Exeggutor. Body Slam is for the paralysis, as without Rest, Double-Edge recoil will not be good. It is really hard to find anything to switch in to this moveset. After you are done causing havoc, you can Selfdestruct on something that bothers you. Lovely Kiss is a good alternative to any of the moves except Body Slam.

Name Item

Belly Drummer

Leftovers
Moveset
~ Lovely Kiss
~ Belly Drum
~ Return
~ Earthquake

This moveset is a very dangerous one. If they send in a pseudo-hazer, you can use Lovely Kiss, Belly Drum, and get to sweeping. This is definitely one of the best stall killers in the game. You can bring it in after you paralyze a few things, or even early on in a match. This guy destroys stall tactics such as Charm Umbreon and Growl Blissey. It is very easy to lose to one of these if you don't hit Snorlax when it switches in. For a safer route, you can opt for Rest over Lovely Kiss or Earthquake.

Name Item

Sleep Talk Curselax

Leftovers
Moveset
~ Curse
~ Double-Edge
~ Rest
~ Sleep Talk

It's pretty hard to take this Snorlax out. After a couple of Curses there really isn't anything that can match up too well with it, and Snorlax is a good sleep absorber since most of the sleep-inducers don't really have an upper hand on Snorlax. Snorlax usually always wins Cursing matches because of his astronomical HP and Special Defense, and Curse boosts his Defense. However, while very dependable, this set is absolutely useless against Gengar, Misdreavus, and any Rock or Steel-type with Curse—and there happens to be a few of those.

Name Item

Mixlax

Leftovers
Moveset
~ Double-Edge
~ Rest
~ Surf
~ Thunder

This set is a bit different, but it can soften up Snorlax's counters. Surf will hit those Rhydon, Steelix, and Tyranitar, while Thunder takes care of Skarmory, Cloyster, Suicune, and friends. The disadvantage of this set is that Snorlax's Special Attack is decent, but not stellar.

Other Options

Counter is quite an unpleasant surprise when used alongside Belly Drum for would-be pseudo-hazers who are faster than Snorlax (basically all of them except for Steelix) and for strong physical attackers (Rhydon, Heracross etc.). Snorlax also learns Shadow Ball to hit Ghosts and Psychics, but you're better off covering those with Earthquake. It learns Reflect, which can be passed around and helps soften the blow of physical attackers.

Opinion

Without a doubt the best Pokémon in GSC, on par with the ubers. EVERY effective team should be able to counter Snorlax. He hits hard and he takes all kinds of hits. He learns just about every move in the game, and there are a lot of useful things he can do with those moves. There really is no bona fide Snorlax counter because of his awesome versatility, attacking power, and Special Defense. Don't be afraid to experiment with different things—you might find something awesome.

Counters

Like I said, there really isn't such a thing as a complete Snorlax counter. Your best bet is to just pound on it with strong physical attacks, since most Special attacks do relatively little to the big lug. It really depends on what set Snorlax is running, but some of the better counters are Skarmory, Steelix, Rhydon, and Golem. Most Explosions will do a great deal, but you have to sacrifice a Pokémon to do it. Another thing is sticking Counter on something unexpected, and when you can bounce back that attack for a KO, do it! Having a damage calculator on hand and a knowledge of damage statistics helps a lot here.
