Exeggutor

Exeggutor has a good chance at taking two Pokémon out of the battle, one with Sleep Powder and another with Explosion. Exeggutor is one of the most reliable sleepers in the game, with a fairly accurate Sleep Powder, great defenses, and highly useful resistances. Aside that, it's the best Ground Pokémon counter that exists. Mega Drain keeps you stocked up on health against Grounds and Starmie. Stun Spore spreads the love of paralysis and hits the Grounds who usually absorb Thunder Waves. Double-Edge is for other Exeggutors, Jynx switch-ins, and the occasional paralyzed Alakazam.

Other Options

Hyper Beam is another physical attack option—the high power can surprise physically weak Pokémon like Alakazam and there's no recoil. Rest lets it stick around and it has the defenses, HP, and resists to survive the nap quite easily. Leech Seed aids in switch wars and is a decent deterrent to Chansey without being forced to Explode on it.

Opinion

Exeggutor has high stats, great resistances including the rare Ground one, and powerful STAB Psychic. It can both sleep and paralyze its opponents and doesn't mind being paralyzed itself. Exeggutor can be a strong starter looking for the two-for-one and it can be a strong switch-in later on with the ability to threaten status and absorb almost everything it isn't weak against. Exeggutor is one of the best Pokémon in the game and a staple in virtually every standard team.

Counters

Jynx, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Dodrio—basically, any of the few Pokémon with powerful STAB attacks that exploit Exeggutor's type weaknesses. Double-Edge Exeggutor simply doesn't care about status and will out-muscle other Exeggutor using its strong Normal attack instead of a resisted STAB Psychic. Tauros and Starmie dislike Stun Spore, but can three-hit KO with Blizzard, so Exeggutor can take them decently (and Starmie only works against varieties without Mega Drain) unless they score a critical hit. Exeggutor just doesn't go down easily. Few Pokémon kill it in fewer than three hits, and it can fire back hard with its monster Special (or Double-Edge on Jynx). It can Explode at any time. In fact, the easiest way to kill Exeggutor may well be to have it kill itself by using Explosion.
