First off ONLY, and I mean ONLY, use a Dugtrio with the Arena Trap trait. This prevents the enemy Pokémon from switching out. Dugtrio relies entirely on your ability to predict. It makes it great to switch in on recovery moves and Electric attacks that are not made by Jolteon. With your wide variety of moves you should be able to take down nearly everything. It makes a great Blissey counter, too, though if the Blissey is packing Ice Beam it's not such a great idea to fight it. Dugtrio is an excellent choice to send out and finish off already weakened Pokémon after one of your own faints. Like I said before, Dugtrio can be exceedingly useful or not very helpful at all. Aerodactyl-Dugtrio Sacrifice StrategyTo do this, you must have both a Dugtrio and Aerodactyl on your team. This strategy sacrifices Aerodactyl to kill a Pokémon you may have trouble with or that your team can't exactly counter. It works nearly 100% of the time. Lets say you are fighting a 6 Calm Minded Raikou with a Substitute up. Send in Aerodactyl, Earthquake its Substitute and then send Dugtrio to finish it off. If you are unsure about sending in Dugtrio directly into Raikou but you are willing to sacrifice Aerodactyl, you can recklessly switch it in to Thunderbolts or Substitutes or such. This also works against such fiends as Alakazam, Espeon, Mr. Mime, Tyranitar, Metagross and Jirachi. While it can work on Blaziken, Medicham and Heracross, watch out for Reversal sets as they WILL beat this strategy every single time. With Endure, it will take Aerodactyl's hit and Reversal it and Dugtrio to hell. Substitute is even worse, as the end result will be that you will fight a Salaced Reversaler with a Substitute up. To make this absolutely foolproof, add Tyranitar's Sand Stream to the mix. Other OptionsHidden Power Flying, possibly, but I would still go with Aerial Ace to keep the IVs maxed, as it's only used on Heracross and Breloom (things like Machamp are hit harder by Earthquake than HP Flying, anyway, and Sludge Bomb / Hidden Power Bug hit Grass types as hard/harder). Toxic maybe, it's not recommended. Sludge Bomb can work in some situations, but only damages Grass-types a little more than Aerial Ace/Hidden Power Bug, and most of them take more damage from your other attacks (Venusaur—Earthquake, Celebi—Hidden Power Bug, Breloom—Aerial Ace). Beat Up is also usable if for some reason you're not using Hidden Power Bug or Aerial Ace. Most people use Adamant Dugtrio to beat Blissey, but if you need to use Jolly Dugtrio for Raikou reasons, Beat Up still 2HKOs Blissey given teammates with good base Attack while Earthquake doesn't. Beat Up is also a good defense against Counter Blissey, regardless of nature. Just be sure to nickname your Pokémon, or Beat Up will give away your team. Protect can stall if you have Perish Sung something and it stayed in when you went to Dugtrio. Substitute can do this as well, in addition to getting you down to Liechi Berry if you're into that, though that takes away a lot of direct power. EVsYou have two options for a nature: Adamant and Jolly. Adamant Dugtrio should have minimally 332 Speed, for outspeeding max Speed Adamant Tyranitar after it Dragon Dances once. Jolly Dugtrio should have 365 Speed, to beat Timid Raikou and Jolly Tyranitar after it Dragon Dances once. Both of these Speeds require 228 EVs with Hidden Power Bug. Put 44 EVs in Special Defense (48 with Hidden Power Bug). Putting it in Special Defense guarantees survival against Hidden Power Ice / Grass Timid Raikou. Put all remaining EVs in Attack. The advantage of Adamant is that it does a buckload more damage against Metagross, Tyranitar, Jirachi, Celebi, and especially Blissey, who can survive 2 Earthquakes from Jolly Dugtrio if it has max Defense and max HP. The advantage of Jolly is, that while it doesn't hurt as much, it stands a chance against Starmie, Raikou and other things that have more than 332, but less than 365 Speed. It depends on your team and preference. OpinionDugtrio can be an extremely useful Pokémon because of its high Speed and Arena Trap, letting it take out many opponents without fear of their fleeing to an unfavorable matchup. Unfortunately, it can't trap Flying-types and Pokémon with Levitate. Additionally, its base Attack is a mediocre 80, which doesn't faze many sturdy Pokémon. CountersThings like Salamence, Skarmory, and the like will counter it. Pokémon with Levitate such as Weezing and Claydol as well. Water-types with good Defense such as Milotic and Suicune are your friends against Dugtrio as well. Wobbuffet/Porygon2/Gardevoir can also trap Dugtrio back and OHKO it. |
