Tutoring Tournaments

Tutoring Tournaments are going to be run concurrently with each and every round as a new addition to the Smogon Apprentice Program! These are meant to provide an opportunity for program participants to show off just how much they are learning from their mentors as well as build camaraderie between players. Apprentices are encouraged to take advantage of their tutor's team building and battling expertise throughout the tournament!

Due to time constraints, only the first 16 people who indicate interest in the Apprentice Program sign-up thread will be allowed to participate. Entire tutoring rounds last for only three weeks at a time, so do not be discouraged if you miss out. You can always try again the following round!

Please familiarize yourself with Smogon's general rules of tournament participation if you plan on entering into one of these contests. Also note the rules below that are specific to Tutoring Tournaments:

  1. Battles will be 6 on 6 D/P played on the Smogon Server of the shoddybattle program.
  2. Tournament rounds will last a maximum of 1 week. No extensions will be granted. It is up to the discretion of the tournament administrator, to determine who will advance in the event of an incomplete match.
  3. Pokemon that are considered "Uber" are banned from use on all teams. Smogon's tier list is supreme.
  4. The following is a list of battling rules.
    • Species Clause: You must use six different Pokémon on your team.
    • Self-KO Clause: You cannot use moves like Explosion or Destiny Bond on your last Pokémon if it will force a tie.
    • Sleep Clause: You can only put to sleep one Pokémon on an opponent's side at any time. For example, if you use Spore to put one Pokémon asleep, you cannot use it again to put another Pokémon asleep until the first one wakes up.
    • Freeze Clause: Only one Pokémon on each team may be inflicted with the freeze condition at any time. Subsequent uses of a move with a chance to freeze will not freeze.
    • Evasion Ban: Moves that solely increase evasion are banned. Double Team is an example of a banned move.
    • OHKO Ban: Specialty OHKO moves are banned. Horn Drill, Fissure, and Sheer Cold are examples moves banned under this rule.
  5. All participants are required to post win/loss results in the appropriate thread of the Battling 101 forum.
  6. Judgement calls of the tournament administrator may be appealed to Blue Kirby, whose authority is final.
