Those GBA Zelda games weren't that hard... I beat them without guides, ever.
I agree with this here, especially the first game. Half the time you don't know what you're doing and you end up at the end of the game with only one thing unlocked or something. Crazy.

not too sound obnoxious (i consider myself an alright gamer but not an elite) or like a grumpy old gamer but does anybody else find that the current generation of games are just too darn easy? There's a trend among recent adventure/fps games where if you die, they start you again almost exactly where you died. On top of that, these games usually have an unlimited life system. There's no punishment for dying which imo is very...um...un-gameish
Oh yeah, I was playing FF1 (The original NES version on an emulator on my DS actually). Certainly harder than the newer ones. I died a lot in that marsh cave place. Although since you can always just put in a bit of level grinding, it's not truly a hard game.Old Final Fantasies
Part of it may be that Japanese gamers supposedly like their games quite easy. Also I think a big factor is that no-one likes a game they can't finish, especially if that means they can never get large amounts of content (areas, levels, characters, showy weapons etc). Of course both those are what you have difficulty levels for. And then there's the rise of online multiplayer - probably devs are focusing on making that balanced, and don't care if story mode is easy, since multiplayer is where the "real challenge" is. Oh, and there's the cynical answer - making games easy and quick to complete means gamers are likely to buy more games.It seems that finding games that are hard but fair are hard to come by recently. I mainly play action games and RPGs, but even in these genres it seems that instead of putting in time to make a game a good mix of challenge, fun and fairness, devs are just "dumbing things down" so that the game won't be too challenging and appeal to a wider range of gamers.

Good game though, the only time I've had to use a walkthrough was when I was pissed off at the detective shit.
I think you might really enjoy the Monster Hunter games, They have a high learning curve, and won't hesitate to murder you on strong bosses, but finding the perfect strategy and weapon to kill a boss is really great.
Getting to High Rank feels awesome.
