Question about Metagross in this generation

has it lost popularity or something because before it was on every team but since then its been like a ghost town. Did something happen:confused: ?

It's just that his new options aren't exactly exciting, and right now, everyone wants to try out new stuff (e.g. Garchomp, DDgatr)...

With Pursuit/Reminiscent Headbutt, he still just as good as ever, though. :)

I used to use Metagross almost religiously, until I realized a substantial problem with it - it has terrible moveset syndrome. Meteor Mash, Earthquake, Thunderpunch, Ice Punch, Agility, Explosion, Grass Rope, Pursuit... it really likes having all of these around, and unfortunately, it just can't.

It also doesn't fill many holes... if you scan the threats list, how many of them wield Earthquake or a Fire move, or just plain blast Metagross (see: Heracross)? There's also problems with both Jibacoil and Dugtrio...

Rhyperior seems to have stolen this thunder somewhat, most thanks to it's better STAB moves.

It's not just his moveslots I have issues with it's his item too. You already mentioned how badly he can be screwed by both Jibacoil and Dugtrio. Beautiful Skin solves this, but he loses the power he had with Choice Band or the stability he got from Leftovers. You could try using Sleep Talk and Rest but limiting him to two attack moves seems almost obscene.

Another thing is that you haven't seen many uber team rates yet. Expect to see a Metagross in almost every one of those; with new physical Pursuit it becomes even better for DP ubers than it was in advance ubers. The lack of physical Shadow Ball hurts, but Pursuit really makes up for it.

Well, he does get Reminiscant Headbutt to nail some stuff on the switch, and with Agility (especially passed to him), he can be a total monster.

Rem Headbutt is terrible. Meteor Mash basically does the same as Reminiscent Headbutt, COUNTING STAB ON BOTH.

On the other hand, It does get Grass Rope, which can mess up Swamperts, or even other water types not called Manaphy if it's Special Attack is high enough

Actually thats a good moveset for Metagross to use in Wi-Fi, it covers Skarm who otherwise will wall you to death always.

But I agree with you guys, Metagross has lost popularity in DP, I haven't seen one in all those RMT's.

I do not own an Action Replay nor would I want one and two just because i have that doesnt mean either of the 2 things u said i just got incredibly lucky.

I dont like when ppl say they have stuff they dont have thats all.

HP Ground is for Jibacoil, since im planing on doing a variation of Mixgross that is more special based, but not completly. and I dont really think having EQ makes it be more special based :S

to awnser you Pyr0 ill be happy to battle you when Diamond and pearl comes out and also where did you get the idea that that is a mixgross?

100 BP from 135 base attack is better than 70 from 95 special attack, despite Jibacoil's higher defense. The only things I can see being useful special moves for Metagross are Grass Rope and possibly HP Fire.

Metagross would need more of a diverse moveset to gain lots of popularity. Other pokemon have unfortunately stolen its Thunder though.

Personally I'm torn if I would have a Metagross or a Rhyperior on a Baton Pass team (the main case that I would possibly use either of them), Rhyperior has vastly superior (har) STABs in Earthquake and Stone Edge and has excellent coverage in its movepool, whereas Metagross just has good resistances but is otherwise lackluster in comparison, especially in the STAB department.

It really helps that Rhyperior has superior attack and HP, along with the same defense IIRC, as Metagross, but Earthquake / Stone Edge / Megahorn / Swords Dance sounds amazingly good.

Ive tried building a team round it anyone got any ideas what the new standard is,it has so many good options.

Pursuit/Thunder punch/Grass rope/MM/Earthquake/Explosion/Rock slide/Zen Headbutt/Arm Hammer.

Pursuit would be nice as the best gengar can do is thunderbolt it,and flamethrower-less azleafs get owned.

This thing has too much going for it with its fairly good typing great stats and movepool to not be OU.Once all the hype of the new pokemon and the improved older ones dies down, i think this will go back straight to the top of OU.It also beats the piss out of Weavile who cannot really do fuck all to it.

Gengar's Shadow Ball actually does more than Thunderbolt, it might be carrying Will-O-Wisp too.

It is quite tough to come up with a moveset for him now as he's got the potential to screw up so many things. He can survive a DD Earthquake from Gyarados and hammer it with Thunderpunch, so I'd consider that. Meteor Mash/Thunderpunch/Earthquake/Grass Rope sounds good. One problem is that it may need to invest in Speed to beat Magnezone before it uses Magnet Rise.

Strange as it may sound, I'd leave his moveset until after you've finished the rest of his team and use him to cover any weaknesses you might have. Something to lure in Dugtrio would be nice, then you can send in Weavile to revenge kill it.

No offence to anyone but if i am battling someone who uses fucking magnet rise magnezone im gonna say i already have them beat.

But why magnet rise on magnezone is a stupid as fuck idea is another topic altogether.

LOL taking a 4x weakness and making it an immunity for 5 actions (aka an eternity in an offensive metagame), combined with Jibacoil's 70/115/90 Defenses and 13 other resistances is stupid as fuck? Guilty as charged. Fucking up Earthquake leaves Fire and Fighting moves, which are fairly popular on physical sweepers, but not possessed by something like Swampert or Metagross, which get crapped all over by MR Magnezone.
