It wasn't the first time I tried competitive team building and battling. But ORAS OU was the first meta I enjoyed enough to really get into playing Pokemon in a competitive environment.
So, I'm proud to present my first team to reach 1400+ ELO !
(Okay... For most of you it's no big deal, but I'm proud anyway...)
You might want to know that even if I get my ranking on the regular OU ladder the team was designed for Aegislash suspect test.
Sorry for my strange English... I'm french.
Overview
Ferrothorn is my bud. I really like playing it and I have to start my defensive core somewhere. He is a Good mixed wall and a SR setter. I wanted to use ferrothorn as my main pivot so my offensive core needed to be fire resistant.
I needed a strong special fire STAB in my team to deal with Aegislash. First, I tried Heatran who cover Ferrothorn fire weakness. But two pokemon week to earthquake/power in the same defensive core wasn't bearable.
I read the recent WIP on Volcarona strategydex entry. Despite the awfull weakness to SR I have to give her a try.
When I first tried ORAS I wanted to test mega-evolution and fairy type. So Diancie was my first mega and I really enjoyed playing it. I picked her because because magic bounce really help volcarona and she has a wonderful base speed.
(And she is prettier than Mega-Sableye...)
I have to deal with SR and both of my sweeper are weak to earth. Latios has levitate and defog and he is an amazing revenge killer.
I wanted a physical and a special wall to complete my defensive core with ferrothorn. Rotom-W has levitate and seems to recive so much love in the good core tread. I had to give him a try.
I really like having a lot of utility in my team. Chansey has access to wish and I wanted to try eviolite.
Eviolite is fun but seimic toss is useless aginst ghost. So I changed chansey to a blissey with a flamethrower.
Exadrill hit my team so hard I had to change my physical wall. I had faced a Manaphy during my test and he was an amazing wall breaker. When I saw his name on a list of OU viable bulky water, he earn his place.
Roaster analysis
Most of the sets are pretty standard. If they don't directly come from the strategydex I found them in WIP. Given this fact, I would rather explain why I choose this particular set or how I use it than badly reword great analysis.
Carbage (Ferrothorn) @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect
Ferrothorn is a great pivot. He lures in so many pokemon wich are great set up to manaphy such as Talonflame. I found suprising that Ferrothorn is actually a good lead versus Garchomp. He is my main answer to bulky fairy pokemon trying to set up (cf Game 9 & 6). Protect is really useful to scout before switching. I chosed Steakth Rock over spikes mainly because I don't have ohter hasard setter. And most of the time manaphy has better use of free move to set up.
Call me May Bee (Volcarona) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain
- Bug Buzz
Not much to say about volcarona. Giga drain give her coverage and recovery on attempt to stop a sweep (cf Game 3). Fiery Dance over Fire Blast might be better idea (cf Game 2). But I might miss some precious OHKO. Sitrus Berry is an attempt to protect Volcarona from priority move (cf Game 6). She really need support against SR but odd HP + Magic Bounce + Wish Pass + Latios seems enough.
I Scream (Diancie) @ Diancite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 208 Atk / 48 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast
- Earth Power
- Protect
I first tried Protect to ensure a safe mega evolution. Now my main use is to scout if opponent SR setter, like Heatran, has physical or special offensive moves to choose between Manaphy or Blissey. She is max speed because she has no set up move. Most of the time she start to sweep with a revenge kill (cf Game 8). I really like how Mega-Diancie can trick predicted statuts moves with magic bounce (cf Game 6).
A Dios (Latios) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Trick
Trick + Choice Scarf is a great combo whan you see that Latios don't need max speed to RK. Trick a utility pokemon ensure futur easy switch in or set up (cf Game 7). Sometimes suicide Latios choice locked on defog grants enough momentum to sweep or kill the hazard setter (cf Game 5). When a fairy is still a live I try to avoir using Draco Meteor. But sometimes the risk of seeing the opponent dragon setting up is too high.
Whale Down (Manaphy) @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Rain Dance
- Rest
- Scald
He was supposed to be a physical wall. But he is a very reliable set up sweeper. In most match up he is my main win condition. He is a bit vulnerable during the last turn of rain so you need to plan using rest a bit forward (cf Game 1 & 5). But he is so tanky he doesn't always need the weather and can win some CM war with PP stall (cf Game 7).
Cotton Cindy (Blissey) @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Flamethrower
- Protect
- Heal Bell
Wish is really usefull. This move enable really risky switch in (cf Game 3). You can even help volcarona ignore SR to gain momentum or if Defog can't be used (cf Game 1). Heal Bell + Hydratation + Magic Bounce really hinder status move user. There is not so much to say. I don't have a recorded exemple of flamthrower utility but it can be usefull against taunt from Gengar or Sableye.
Annexes
I learned a lot building this team. The main teaching was very simple. The reason why I felt unlucky in past gen meta was my use of really offensive build. Which doens't fit my playstyle.
I'll be glad if some people will playtest a bit and give me some feedback.
I hope my grammar and syntax error weren't unbearable...
