From the Start

Well, today, I tried explaining how the game works EV/IV-wise etc, to a couple of friends.

So, really they asked how you EV, etc, and I tried telling them, but they didn't seem to understand anything other than "Getting to Level 100 means you can beat anything."

So, how do you think that I could teach them how to play, properly, with EVs, IVs, and Competitive Battling.

Lol. I've beaten them all a hundred-and twenty times. They just don't understand why my level 30 EVed Pokémon beat their level 50s ¬_¬

To show them results, have them catch a roselia near the survival area. Next, take it to old chateuo and have it mindlessly beat up gastly's with a macho brace attached. When they level up it should grow about ~20 points. explain to them now that when you level up a poke, its stats usially go up only about 2 to 3 points while this method will bring it up supstansually in the field a pokemon needs it in. this should show them that EV training is the best method to make a powerful pokemon.

That's how I learned :D

if they aren't willing to listen to you about EVs and how they work then they are hopeless. yes, it is up to you to be able to elucidate what EVs are and how many you're allowed to use on a pokemon, etc., but if they get bored or tune you out because "RAR MY CHARIZARD IS LV100 IT CANT BEAT ANYTHING!!!!" then don't waste your time. they need to grow up/listen

Ahh... I remember the days when i used to think a level 70 rayquaza, freshly caught, was the best thing on earth.
Ooh boy.

Yeah, try and show them like The Mantyke said.

I remember randomly killing Floatzels and Purugly's with an Altaria, and seeing that my speed went up by 7! =P

Nevertheless, That's how I stumbled across EV'ing, and competative pokemon play in general.

there should be a picture of this somewhere. or not, I pretty sure someone posted it before though.

If they know nothing about Pokemon, show them serebii.net.

If they are more experienced, get them to get ShoddyBattle, then they'll have to use good EVs and IVs to win, then they'll realize how important they are, then they'll put more of an effort into learning about them.

Of force them to (or show them how to) EV train, and then when their stat increases by 20 on a level up, you can explain to them why it's useful.

Or, even better, both catch identical Pokemon, then train for 10 minutes, and say that whoever gets the highest in a chosen stat wins. You'll be using vitamins, power items, Pokerus and you'll know where to get the relevant EVs, and when your stat is twice as high as their's, then they'll really want to know, and will probably work harder to try and understand it.

Basically, the best way to help them to learn is to show the EV training process to them, rather than tell them about it.

I battled someone on wifi the other day whose Mewtwo was outsped by my Roserade. Ah, the wonders of EVs.

Just tell them to get any pokemon they are raising and kill a bunch of Spindas. Then when they see the amount of hp it increases, they will be in shock.

It still contains a lot of mistakes though, imo. Swampert is not a sweeper, Rhyperior is not a wall, Skarmory is not THE best Physical wall (Forretress and Hippowdon are different, but not any worse - they didn't even get a mention), using ubers is not pointless (they have their own metagame), Wobbuffet is not only uber because of its HP but more because of its trait, Wurmple and Caterpie do not count as NU because they're not fully evolved, and NFE Pokemon are afaik banned from NU... the list goes on.

Nevertheless, it's a decent guide that should help newbies get started I guess...

The first competitive guide I found was http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/925601/48500

Very good for people new to competitive battling.

I had a lot of success just showing my friend shoddybattle. He hadn't played since rby, so we ended up making a team of some of his favorites (with a little executive oversight by me) and seeing how it did. The process of making the team, explaining why I used certain hidden power, movesets, ev's etcetera and also explaining why I made certain battle decisions was very helpful (I think).

as everybody else said, i found the most effective way was to show them. basically i hacked a latios to level 98, killed gastly's until it levelled up, and got +68 special attack on the level up. i showed it to my friends and
they were like, WTF????!!!! then explain it to them in simple words and show them serebii.net. however, if they respond to your lecture with "I have an eevee." then your wasting your time. i would know.

EDIT: oh yeah, i tossed the latios since he had max iv's and i didnt use hacked pokemon back then.

LOL, thats how I showed my bro. He killed Spindas for hours, and kept gaining 15 or more special attack. After I learned about this, I maxed attack on everything. it's so satisfying to gain so much stats per level, :P

If they're stubborn follow Jumpman's advice and give it up as a lost cause. Or you can switch Pokémon and "let" them "beat" you with your Lv. 30's to "teach" them the whole EV importance thing. That's how I got my friends to learn. It worked, too. Of course, only if you're that desperate.

My best advice is to explain to them that there's a difference when fighting level 100 to level 100 (or and level x to level x), not level x to level y, and that when you reach level 100, its different if you EV trained. Tell them to compare Apples to Apples instead of Apples to Oranges.

If they don't want to learn even though you continually stomp them then it's probably hopeless. I would make them read a FAQ personally, but maybe thats not their thing...

If they are not learning you are obviously not beating them enough.

But yea, show em serebii to start with i guess. I learned about the competitive side of pokemon from Gamefaqs surprising as that may seem. (TY Spanky :P)

It's almost scary when your friends get smart... then you can't beat them...

Well, jsut because I'm bored, I'll post the dumbest things non-educated players have said.

-"Well of course Timid is a good snorlax nature!! It lowers his great attack, and helps it's poor speed. It needs speed really badly" (when told that Sassy was a better nature for his snorlax. He had both natures in his box)

-"Rayquaza can OHKO Regice with extremspeed. You would'nt even egt to ice beam me. On the slim chance that you survived, Rayquaza can take an Ice Beam anyway."

-Shedinja Moveset: Toxic, Solarbeam, Aerial Ace, Shadow Ball. Held item is Leftovers

BTW, I am serious. My friends actually siad this stuff to me.

more to come as I remember them.

LOL I ran into a ninjask on wifi tower that was slower than my modest Specsmence. I was like, O.o is that even possible???

But yeah, if they won't listen they're hopeless.

Rather irrelivant, but my best is 48 :)
