SS OU Thundurus-T Rain (1350 on ladder)

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum as I think I need some help. I'm a relatively novice-ish player so this is my first time trying to seriously ladder somewhat.

The team:

Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunder
- Psychic
- Weather Ball

This is what I want the star of the team to be as I mostly built it around being able to use Thundurus-T. Offensive it breaks a ton of pokes and chunks stuff, and can also setup on walls using Nasty Plot while being able to pivot around without much fear thanks to HBD. Defensively it negates electric types and most importantly Regieleki entirely but not much else.

Pelipper @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Scald
- Defog

The weather setter and hazard control. Considering how many pokemon have HBD on my team I've considered switching defog over U-Turn but basically it does everything you expect a Pelipper to. Sets weather, can deal some nice damage with Hurricane and burns stuff with Scald. Defensively invested to help deal with Blaziken and Cinderace in case I run into them.

Barraskewda @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Liquidation
- Close Combat
- Flip Turn
- Drill Run

One of my weather abusers, eviscerates almost anything with life orb boosted liquidations under rain and has close combat to deal with stuff like Chansey, Ferro, and Drill Run for Pex. Haven't run into too many Pex on the low ladder so I'm thinking of giving it Crunch to help with regenerator Slowbro which has given me quite a bit of trouble.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 152 Def / 104 SpD
Careful Nature
- Leech Seed
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
- Protect

Ferrothorn serves as a wall to electric and grasses who would otherwise threaten the team and helps chip physical attackers that try to u-turn on it. Leech seed so it can win the stall 1v1 vs Pex and Knock Off to cripple switches by taking away their item.

Magearna-Original @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 30 Atk
- Dazzling Gleam
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
- Iron Defense

This thing is ridiculous and rain helps neuter one of the weakness it has. I built her to give me basically another wincon but I know this mon is so versatile there might be other sets that would do better than it. It also helps check Pheromosa defensively.

Pheromosa @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Close Combat
- Triple Axel
- Lunge

A fast pivot that can also outspeed and revenge kill a lot of things while also being partially immune to being revenge killed by the likes of Garchomp. Triple axel to help deal with Tornadus-T, Zapdos, and Tangrowth. Maybe protective pads would be better to evade rocky helmet/static but not sure yet.

On thunderous replace psychic for defog and get rid of pherosmas HDB for LO/Expert belt/CB on pelipper replace HDB to damp rock

Not sure why 30 atk on magearna?
Magearna original has to run 30 attack IVs due to it being from an event
On thunderous replace psychic for defog and get rid of pherosmas HDB for LO/Expert belt/CB on pelipper replace HDB to damp rock
I tried to run the team with these differences but I found HDB are way too important for Pelipper to not take any chip damage and psychic on Thundurus helps it break through a few things that would wall it otherwise like Amoonguss. I did end up replacing Pheromosa's HDB for Protective Pads since iron barbs and rocky helmet were an issue with Triple Axel

So slightly late, but I have one small suggestion that might help. This however comes from personal experience. I personally like running banded barraskewda just because it helps not taking 1/10 damage every turn. Especially in this meta where rocky helmet and contact abilities are so large, I just don't like taking extra damage. Banded skewda also plays better with flip turn, since you aren't taking even more damage when you are swapping out. Flip turn also gets a bit stronger since band gives a 1.5 boost, compared to life orb 1.3 boost.

On cm iron defense magearna draining kiss is the best fairy type move to use as it recovers hp while hitting fairly hard after the cm/soul heart boosts. Also, lunge on pheromosa is kind of useless as it already has a bug type move in u-turn, which is a better move. I can kind of see the merit in beating slowbro better but idk still seems kind of redundant. In my opinion on phero you should go eithet drill run, throat chop, or rapid spin, as they are more useful moves overall on the set.

I love seeing new players in the scene, so I am going to try to help you out. You are on the right track for a rain team. Rain teams, especially now, are very momentum based, meaning you will be clicking u-turn or flip turn or volt switch a lot. First of all, you are a full rain team, so there really is no other choice other than to run damp rock. I understand you say stealth rocks do to much chip to pelliper, but we will fix that down the road. U-turn is also a necessity on pelliper, so you can bring in your rain sweepers safe, ditch defog or hurricane for it.
Pelipper @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Scald
- U-turn
If you have to use thunderous-t, then the set is fine. Usually offensive Zapdos is a better option, but thunderous-t has a nice niche as well.
Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunder
- Psychic
- Weather Ball

Barraskewda is one of the best choice band rain abusers out there. Having such a powerful momentum move (flip turn) is really great. Life orb makes barraskeda kill itself to fast, when you should be bringing it in multiple times to click flip turn.

Barraskewda @ Choice Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Liquidation
- Close Combat
- Flip Turn
- Drill Run

Currently you lose to spectrier if rain isn't up, which it might not always be. Ferrothorn seems to be a momentum sink on this team, so I recommend replacing it with Mandibuzz. This also provides a consistent defogger, which you team desperately needs. This is just a set I took from smogon, you can read up on it more:

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 160 Def / 44 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Defog
- U-turn

Now with Ferrothorn gone, you have no stealth rocker. Replacing magearna with a more defensive fairy will really help you out. Immediately Clefable comes to mind. It provides stealth rocks, consistent healing, and knock off support. There are many ways you can run a clef, but I think a more utility set will help you:

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off

Now you have a really nice defensive backbone, this by no means is a stall team, but it has a defensive pivot and support. Pheromosa works pretty well on this team, just change lunge for rapid spin to provide another way to get rid of rocks and spikes. Lunge is not good for the reasons other people said.
Pheromosa @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Close Combat
- Triple Axel
- Rapid Spin

Cool team overall, and its always great for the Pokemon community to get new perspectives! Here is the pokepaste, but please read over all the reasons of the changes:
