NU Xatu

[OVERVIEW]

Xatu is the embodiment of Magic Bounce; it is able to keep its team safe from entry hazards and take on the likes of Steelix, Ferroseed, and Miltank outstandingly. In a tier where several top-tier Pokemon are weak to Stealth Rock, the role Xatu provides is extremely valuable, supporting Pokemon like Incineroar and Vanilluxe. Access to Roost, U-turn, and a bunch of utility options let Xatu excel at the pivoting role it's known for, and its typing stands out in giving it a 4x resistance to Fighting-type moves. A last valuable trait is Xatu's solid matchup against stall teams, being able to bounce back status moves like Toxic to targets like Pyukumuku. That being said, hazard setters like Rhydon, Diancie, and Piloswine can threaten it out with their STAB moves, making it necessary to win a bunch of mind games just to keep hazards away. Xatu is also prone to getting trapped by Sneasel and Houndoom, which could make it it tough for Xatu's team to fight against hazards. Mold Breaker ignores Xatu's Magic Bounce, allowing Druddigon to set up Stealth Rock against teams that use Xatu as hazard control. Lastly, Xatu's bulk can be rather underwhelming, meaning players have to be very cautious to let it get worn down too fast. Likewise, its typing leaves it vulnerable to common Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-types.

Moves
========

Night Shade is Xatu's main form of damage, dealing consistent damage to pretty much the entire tier bar Normal-types like Heliolisk and Braviary. Roost is imperative to keep Xatu healthy throughout a match. U-turn lets Xatu be an efficient pivot, allowing it to keep momentum and give its teammates more opportunities to come in. It also lets Xatu not be bait for Pokemon like Incineroar and Heliolisk. Toxic can put opposing walls on a timer as well as help stall opposing Pokemon out. It’s also a great tool to punish Pokemon that would otherwise switch in for free, like Rhydon, Braviary, and Heliolisk. Protect lets Xatu scout for Choice-locked moves, most notably from Heliolisk, Passimian, and Sneasel. Toxic and Protect can also be used together by giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn, letting Protect also serve as a powerful method of Toxic stalling the foe. This lets Xatu beat Pokemon such as Vanilluxe and Guzzlord one-on-one but also lets Heliolisk and Vanilluxe switch in for free due to the lack of U-turn. Defog can be used to remove Stealth Rock from Druddigon as well as from other setters that beat it, like Rhydon and Diancie.

Set Details
========

Xatu's Speed EVs allow it to be faster than Incineroar. 252 HP EVs maximize this stat, and the remainder of EVs are thrown into Defense alongside a Bold nature to better take on physical attackers like Steelix. Magic Bounce is key to let Xatu perform its role as an entry hazard deterrent. It also bounces back status moves like Toxic to severely cripple Slowbro, Milktank, Vaporeon, and opposing Xatu. Lastly, Rocky Helmet puts more pressure on Steelix while still annoying other physical attackers like Passimian or Gallade.

Usage Tips
========

The main point of using Xatu is to keep entry hazards away. It should always pivot on hazard setters it beats, like Steelix, Ferroseed, and Torterra. As for Stealth Rock users that can be a threat, it's important to ponder the risk of sending in Xatu on predicted Stealth Rock or potentially having it drop from a STAB move from Diancie, Rhydon, or Piloswine. If you have a Defog or Rapid Spin user it might be smart to not predict too much, especially if Xatu has any defensive value on the match, such as checking the likes of Passimian and Gallade. Try to keep Xatu healthy with Roost, as it can't switch into many Pokemon it would check if its HP is too low, and full health might be important to make a couple plays when dancing around Stealth Rock setters. However, it might be smart to U-turn out of potential threats to Xatu that would otherwise switch in for free, like Sneasel, Heliolisk, and Vanilluxe. Using Toxic on these is also an option, but be careful of opposing Xatu, as it will bounce Toxic back to your Xatu and severely cripple it. Protect should be used to scout against users of Choice items, like Passimian, Sneasel, and Vanilluxe. Lastly, be very careful around Pursuit users like Sneasel if Xatu lacks Protect, as they can trap and eliminate it, allowing the opponent to set up Stealth Rock. This is especially important when Xatu is your only form of hazard removal.

Team Options
========

Pokemon weak to Stealth Rock are prime partners. Offensive pivots like Incineroar, Vanilluxe, Sneasel, and Heliolisk really appreciate a field clear off of entry hazards. Xatu can also bring them in reliably with U-turn. Meanwhile, defensive pivots, such as Vaporeon and Mega Audino, also appreciate the hazard prevention to consistently switch in on Pokemon they check. Secondary forms of hazard removal can be useful for balance teams that don’t don't want to immediately lose to setters that beat Xatu. Silvally-Steel and Blastoise are great examples that can remove hazards for Xatu. If your team can't fit a secondary form of hazard control, offensive Pokemon that can pressure Rhydon and Diancie can be useful to keep them in check and punish Stealth Rock. Slowbro, Passimian, Vanilluxe, and Heliolisk are great options for this. Considering how Xatu pretty much nullifies Steelix's presence in a match, partners like Heliolisk and Comfey that struggle with this are great choices. Defensive Pokemon that can cover up Xatu's weaknesses are solid teammates. Steelix, Ferroseed, and Silvally-Steel take on a couple threats to Xatu, such as Vikavolt, Vanilluxe, and Diancie. Likewise, Hariyama and other Fighting-types can cover Xatu's Dark-type weakness, mainly Sneasel, as it can Pursuit trap Xatu.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Offensive moves other than Night Shade are an option as well. Grass Knot takes on Slowbro, Steelix, and Rhydon, the latter of which, Rhydon is especially important to beat as an entry hazard setter. Psychic deals reliable damage against most Pokemon that don't resist it. Most notably, it also lets Xatu hit Garbodor with a lot more strength and handles Fighting-types like Hariyama better. Signal Beam hits mostly opposing Psychic-types, like Slowbro, Slowking, and Malamar. Dazzling Gleam hits Guzzlord and Scrafty while still being able to hit Sneasel. Offensive sets of Xatu aren't bad, but they give up a lot of the reliability in hazard control that defensive variants provide. Furthermore, Xatu will more often than not prefer the constant damage output from Night Shade over other offensive moves because of the consistent damage.

Feather Dance can make Xatu more threatening to setup sweepers like Swords Dance Rhydon and Curse Steelix and avoid becoming bait considering Night Shade's low and predictable damage output. Thunder Wave can catch incoming Sneasel and Braviary and just slow down fast Pokemon in general. Another option is Calm Mind + Stored Power, giving Xatu an excellent matchup against stall, but this gives up some of its ability to deal with more offensive playstyles. There are far better users of this move in the tier, and Xatu is usually better off using the aforementioned moves. Lastly, Xatu can use Reflect and Light Screen alongside a Light Clay to support offensive partners like Weakness Policy Incineroar, Bulk Up Braviary, and Omastar on offensive archetypes.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Select Entry Hazard Setters**: Several Stealth Rock users such as Diancie, Rhydon, and Piloswine can scare away Xatu with super effective STAB moves, severely limiting its role and usefulness. Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog, because of Mold Breaker.

**Dark-types**: Sneasel and Houndoom can trap Xatu with Pursuit and let teammates set entry hazards without many worries. Xatu can try to avoid being Pursuit trapped with U-turn, but it should be careful of being outplayed and becoming unable to use Roost. That being said, it can still scout with Protect and take these foes down one-on-one if they are locked into Pursuit. Other Dark-types like Guzzlord and Absol, despite not outright trapping Xatu, can be a big threat to it.

**Electric-types**: Heliolisk doesn’t take any damage from Night Shade and is only really scared of U-turn or Toxic. Other Electric-types like Rotom and Vikavolt are also notable despite getting by Night Shade. After coming in on Xatu, all three can safely force it out and grab momentum with Volt Switch or fire a strong STAB-boosted hit.

**Ice-types**: Vanilluxe, Cryogonal, Regice, and Articuno can switch in for free and force Xatu out, but none of them appreciate a Toxic.

**Ghost-types**: In a similar vein, Decidueye, Dhelmise, Haunter, and Mismagius can also force Xatu out and switch in for free. Haunter is also immune to Toxic.

  • And even then, Druddigon can be used to ignore Xatu's Magic Bounce and really break down most Xatu teams thanks to their usual over reliance on Magic Bounce to keep hazards away. I'd just lump this bit in with the previous. It's a Stealth Rock user that can force hazards against Xatu.
  • Lastly, Xatu's bulk can be rather underwhelming, making it so players have to be very cautious when using it not to let it get worn down too fast.

  • Toxic can put opposing walls on a timer as well as help stall opponents out.
  • Protect lets Xatu scout for moves, most notably Passimian and Sneasel's. specify that you're scouting Choice item users. Heliolisk can also be listed here.
  • Toxic and Protect can also be used together by forfeiting U-turn, letting Protect also serve as a powerful method of toxic stalling the opponent, but giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn expand on how this trades out Xatu being able to pivot out of poor matchups for improving the direct 1v1. examples are Pokemon like Vanilluxe, Guzzlord, and more

  • Xatu's EV spread lets it get the jump on Incineroar while maximizing its physical bulk with the remaining EVs.
  • Magic Bounce is key to let Xatu perform its role as a hazard deterrent. it also lets you bounce back status moves like Toxic, useful against mons like Slowbro, Miltank, even opposing Xatu.
  • Lastly, Rocky Helmet punishes and puts more pressure on Steelix while still annoying other physical attackers like Gallade or Passimian on a predicted U-turn. might wanna reword this. right now it sounds like Gallade can use U-turn.
Usage Tips

  • The bread and butter of playing with Xatu is to keep hazards away. It should always pivot on hazard setters it beats, like Steelix, Ferroseed, and Torterra.
  • As for Stealth Rock users that can be a threat it’s important to try to be on top of the mind games. Always ponder the risk of making a play of sending Xatu on predicted Stealth Rock or potentially having it drop from a STAB move coming from Diancie, Rhydon, or Piloswine.

  • Lastly, be very careful around Pursuit users like Sneasel, as they can trap and eliminate Xatu making Stealth Rock free for the opponent. This is especially enforced when Xatu is your only form of hazard removal. specify non-Protect variants of Xatu have to be much more careful. if you have Protect you beat Sneasel 1v1 if it uses Pursuit thanks to Rocky Helmet damage and I can't imagine its much better for stuff like Houndoom that's much weaker.
  • mention U-turning out of bad matchups or if predicting wallbreakers that threaten Xatu like Vani or Diancie
  • Toxic targets and the caution you must exert if the opponent has a Xatu
  • Protect scouting choice item users
  • these don't have to be in this order, just the order I thought about them. put them where you think they make the most sense in regards to your other points

Xatu can also bring them in reliably with U-turn. Meanwhile, defensive pivots, such as Vaporeon and Mega Audino also appreciate this likewise. why do defensive pivots appreciate U-turn support? so they can be brought into Pokemon they check that Xatu can't deal with?
  • Secondary forms of hazard removal can be useful for Balance teams that don’t want to immediately lose to hazards that beat Xatu. Silvally-Steel and Blastoise are great examples. it's also that they can clear any entry hazards that make it by Xatu
  • If your team can’t fit a secondary form of hazard control however, offensive Pokémon that can pressure the likes of Rhydon and Diancie can be useful to keep them in check and punish Stealth Rock. Slowbro, Passimian, and the aforementioned Vanilluxe and Heliolisk are great options for this.

  • Feather Dance can make Xatu more threatening to set up sweepers, not becoming bait considering Night Shade’s low and predictable damage output. it also helps against SD Rhydon and Curse Steelix
  • Thunder Wave can catch incoming Sneasel and Braviary and just punish fast Pokémon in general.
  • Offensive moves other than Night Shade are an option as well:
  • Psychic deals reliable damage against most Pokémon that don’t resist it. let's Xatu bop Garbodor more reliably and gives it extra insurance against Fighting-types
  • Grass Knot takes on Slowbro, Steelix, and Rhydon.
  • Heat Wave also hits Steelix while catching incoming Vanilluxe, Sneasel, and Klingklang. can list other Steel-types here too
  • Shadow Ball and Signal Beam hit mostly opposing Psychic-types, the former handles Delphox, Sigilyph, and Mismagius better while the former takes on Malamar.
  • Dazzling Gleam hits Guzzlord while still keeping Sneasel as a target.
  • That being said, Xatu will more often than not prefer the constant damage output from Night Shade, hitting all of the above targets for consistent damage.
  • Calm Mind is also an option but there are far better users of this move in the tier. Xatu can run a CM + 3 attacks set if it wants, it's just the defensive utility provided by the standard set is usually more beneficial for a team. and yeah I'd run CM Bro before CM Xatu unless I wanted both the wincon and hazard control

**Anti-Xatu Entry Hazard Setters this is a god awful name for this section lol. I have no idea what a better one would be though.**: Several users of Stealth Rock can scare away Xatu with Super Effective STAB moves, severely hurting Xatu’s role and usefulness, Diancie, Rhydon, and Piloswine are notable examples. Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog. make sure to mention why: Mold Breaker

**Dark-types**: The likes of Sneasel and Houndoom can trap Xatu with Pursuit and let teammates set hazards without many worries. Xatu can try to dodge them with U-turn, but it still can get worn down with the mind games and getting constantly pressured and unable to Roost. mention how Protect lets it scout them if they're Choice Band/Scarf and can beat them 1v1 if they lock into Pursuit

**Miscellaneous Wallbreakers**: the likes of Heliolisk, Vanilluxe, Diancie, and Guzzlord can come in on Xatu for pretty much free and hit Xatu’s team with quite a punch. Of course, they don’t like switching in on Toxic, U-turn, or multiple Night Shades on the former three cases, but nonetheless Xatu invites them in a little too much.

give electric-types their own bullet and address mons like Lisk, Rotom, and Vikavolt down here. remove lisk from the wallbreakers section just to not be too repetitive. I would even argue for Ice-types to get their own section with mons like Sneasel, Vani, and friends, although you cover the mons in other sections

Protect lets Xatu scout for choice-locked moves, most notably from Heliolisk, Passimian, and Sneasel. Toxic and Protect can also be used together by forfeiting U-turn, letting Protect also serve as a powerful method of toxic stalling the opponent, but giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn. This lets Xatu beat the likes of Vanilluxe and Guzzlord one on one but let’s the likes of Heliolisk and Vanilluxe for free thanks to the lack of U-turn. Defog can be used to let Xatu remove Stealth Rock from, most notably, Druddigon but also from other setters that beat it, like Rhydon and Diance once they're out of the battlefield.

Xatu's EV spread lets it get the jump on Incineroar. 252 HP EVs maximize this valuable stat for any wall whereas the remainder of EVs are thrown into Defense alongside a Bold nature to let it better take on physical attackers like Steelix. Magic Bounce is key to let Xatu perform its role as a hazard deterrent. It also bounces back status moves like Toxic, that can severely cripple the likes of Slowbro, Milktank, Vaporeon, and opposing Xatu using Toxic against it. Lastly, Rocky Helmet punishes and puts more pressure on Steelix while still annoying other physical attackers like Passimian on a predicted U-turn or Gallade.

Usage Tips
========

The bread and butter of playing with Xatu is to keep hazards away. It should always pivot on hazard setters it beats, like Steelix, Ferroseed, and Torterra. As for Stealth Rock users that can be a threat it’s important to try to be on top of the mind games. Always ponder the risk of making a play of sending Xatu on predicted Stealth Rock or potentially having it drop from a STAB move coming from Diancie, Rhydon, or Piloswine. If you have a Defog or Rapid Spin user though, it might be smart to try not to predict too much, specially if Xatu has any defensive value on the match, such as checking Passimian, Gallade etc. Try to always keep Xatu healthy with Roost, as it can’t switch into many Pokémon it would check if it’s HP is too low, and full health might be important to make a couple plays when dancing around Stealth Rock setters. However, it might be smart to U-turn on potential threats to Xatu that would otherwise switch in for free, like Sneasel, Heliolisk, and Vanilluxe. Using Toxic on these is also an option, but be careful of opposing Xatu as if it comes in on a predicted Toxic it will bounce back to your Xatu and severely cripple it. Protect, if packed, should be used to scout against users of Choice items, like Passimian, Sneasel, and Vanilluxe. Lastly, be very careful around Pursuit users like Sneasel, as they can trap and eliminate Xatu making Stealth Rock free for the opponent, specially if Xatu lacks Protect. This is especially enforced when Xatu is your only form of hazard removal.

Team Options
========

Obviously, partners weak to Stealth Rock are prime partners. Offensive pivots like Incineroar, Vanniluxe (Vanilluxe), Sneasel, and Heliolisk really appreciate a field clear off hazards on their side. Xatu can also bring them in reliably with U-turn. Meanwhile, defensive pivots, such as Vaporeon and Mega Audino also appreciate the hazard prevention, to consistently come in on Pokémon they check. Secondary forms of hazard removal can be useful for Balance teams that don’t want to immediately lose to hazards that beat Xatu. Silvally-Steel and Blastoise are great examples. They can also removes hazard for Xatu, as the totem bird is ironically very prone to getting worn down by Stealth Rock that make it through Xatu’s ability. If your team can’t fit a secondary form of hazard control however, offensive Pokémon that can pressure the likes of Rhydon and Diancie can be useful to keep them in check and punish Stealth Rock. Slowbro, Passimian, and the aforementioned Vanilluxe and Heliolisk are great options for this. Considering how Xatu pretty much nullifies Steelix’s presence on a match partners that exploit this condition like Heliolisk and Comfey are great choices. Defensive Pokémon that can cover up Xatu’s weaknesses are solid picks. Steelix, Ferroseed, and Silvally-Steel each take on a couple threats to Xatu, such as Vikavolt, Vanilluxe, and Diancie. Likewise, Hariyama and other Fighting-types can cover the Dark-type weakness, mainly Sneasel, as it can pursuit trap Xatu.

Other Options
=============

Offensive moves other than Night Shade are an option as well: Grass Knot takes on Slowbro, Steelix, and Rhydon. The former is specially important to beat as a hazard setter. Psychic deals reliable damage against most Pokémon that don’t resist it. It most notably also lets Xatu hit Garbodor with a lot more strength and handles Fighting-types like Hariyama better. Heat Wave also hits Steelix, Ferroseed, and Silvally-Steel harder while catching incoming Vanilluxe, Sneasel, and Klingklang. Shadow Ball and Signal Beam hit mostly opposing Psychic-types, the former handles Delphox, Sigilyph, and Mismagius better while the former takes on Malamar. Dazzling Gleam hits Guzzlord while still keeping Sneasel as a target. That being said, Xatu will more often than not prefer the constant damage output from Night Shade, hitting all of the above targets for consistent damage. (Remove Shadow Ball and Heat Wave, add Scrafty to Dazzling Gleam targets)

Feather Dance can make Xatu more threatening to set up sweepers like Swords Dance Rhydon and Curse Steelix, not becoming bait considering Night Shade’s low and predictable damage output. Thunder Wave can catch incoming Sneasel and Braviary and just punish fast Pokémon in general. Another option is Calm Mind but there are far better users of this move in the tier and Xatu is usually better off using the aforementioned moves. (Elaborate on Calm Mind by discussing Stored Power and the fantastic matchup it has versus Stall and fatter teams in exchange for being much less practical versus balance and offense) Offensive sets aren’t bad, but they give up a lot of the reliability in hazard control that defensive variants provides.(This should be said in the beginning when you talk about offensive options) Lastly, Xatu can use Reflect and Light Screen alongside a Light Clay to support offensive partners in offensive archetypes. (Such as?)

Checks and Counters
===================

**Anti-Xatu Entry Hazard Setters**: Several users of Stealth Rock can scare away Xatu with Super Effective STAB moves, severely hurting Xatu’s role and usefulness, Diancie, Rhydon, and Piloswine are notable examples. Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog, courtesy of Mold Breaker.

**Dark-types**: The likes of Sneasel and Houndoom can trap Xatu with Pursuit and let teammates set hazards without many worries. Xatu can try to dodge them with U-turn, but it still can get worn down with the mind games and getting constantly pressured and unable to Roost. That being said, it can still scout with Protect and take these down one on one if locked into Pursuit. (Mention Absol)

**Electric-types**: Heliolisk doesn’t take any damage from Night Shade, and is only really scared of U-turn or Toxic. Other Electric-types like Rotom and Vikavolt are also notable despite getting by Night Shade. All three after coming in on Xatu can safely force it out and grab momentum with Volt Switch or fire a strong STAB boosted hit.

**Miscellaneous Wallbreakers**: the likes of Vanilluxe, Diancie, and Guzzlord can come in on Xatu for pretty much free and hit Xatu’s team with quite a punch. Of course, they don’t like switching in on Toxic, U-turn, or multiple Night Shades but nonetheless Xatu invites them in a little too much. (Remove this section and divide it into Ice-types and Ghost-types. You can move Guzzlord to Dark-types and Rock-types like Diancie are already included in the Anti-Xatu setters section so we wont need a separate heading for that.)

[OVERVIEW]

Xatu is the embodiment of Magic Bounce, keeping its team safe from hazards, and thereby allowing it to (Odd transition, so connector to smooth the flow) takeing on the likes of Steelix, Ferroseed, and Miltank outstandingly. In a tier where several top tier (Avoiding repetition of "tier") Pokémon are weak to Stealth Rock, the role Xatu provides is extremely valuable, supporting, for example, the likes of Incineroar and Vanilluxe, for example (Possibly a bit subjective, but I feel this flows better, with "for example" preceding the examples to be given). Xatu also has a couple other traits to its advantage, (Referring to "couple other" and only including one of these in the same sentence reads a bit awkwardly, so I took this little bit out and combined this and the proceeding sentence) Access (capitalized "a") to Roost, U-turn, and a bunch of utility options lets it excel at the pivot role it's known for. As another advantage, while it's typinge stands out in giving it a quadruple resistance to Fighting-type moves. A last valuable trait is Xatu’s solid matchup against Stall teams, due to it being able to bounce back status moves like Toxic to targets against Pokemon ("targets" sounds somewhat weird, given that the move is being used against (targeting) Xatu, and is being bounced back, although this is probably just an odd nitpick) like Pyukumuku. That being said, hazard setters like Rhydon, Diancie, and Piloswine can threaten it out with their STAB moves, making it necessary to win a bunch of mind games and fifty-fifties just to keep hazards away. Xatu is also prone to getting trapped by Sneasel and Houndoom, to an extent which can makeing ("to an extent" sounds somewhat odd in the middle of a sentence as it is, although possibly subjective again) it tough for Xatu’s team to fight against hazards. And even then, (This connector is out of place, because the previous sentence was more about the fact that Sneasel and Houndoom trap Xatu, while this one focuses on how Druddigon can get up hazard even when facing Xatu) Furthermore, Druddigon can be used to (Since this is about Xatu, it's a bit odd to be saying Druddigon "can be used") ignores Xatu's Magic Bounce and really breaks down most Xatu teams thanks due ("thanks" is an odd word for a negative) to their usual over-reliance on Magic Bounce to keep hazards away. Lastly, Xatu's bulk can be rather underwhelming, making it so players have to be very cautious when using it not to let it get worn down too fast. Likewise, its typing leaves it vulnerable to Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-types moves (weak to moves, not types), which are quite common in the tier.

Night Shade is Xatu's main form of damage, dealing consistent damage to pretty much the entire tier bar Normal-types like Heliolisk and Braviary. Roost is imperative to keep Xatu healthy throughout a match. It’s also a great tool to punish Pokémon that would otherwise come in for free, (RC) like Rhydon, Braviary, and Heliolisk. Protect lets Xatu scout for Choice-locked (capitalized "c") moves, most notably from Heliolisk, Passimian, and Sneasel. Toxic and Protect can also be used together by forfeiting U-turn, letting Protect also serve as a powerful method of toxic stalling the opponent, but giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn. This lets Xatu beat the likes of Vanilluxe and Guzzlord one on one but lets the likes of Heliolisk and Vanilluxe come in for free thanks due (Again, "thanks" is an odd word for describing a negative) to the lack of U-turn. Defog can be used to let Xatu remove Stealth Rock from, most notably, Druddigon, (AC) but also from other setters that beat it, like Rhydon and Diancie, (AC) once they're out off the battlefield.

Xatu's EV spread 60 Speed EVs lets it Xatu get the jump on Incineroar (Only the Speed EVs pertain to this remark, so probably better to be specific here, given you go into details for bulk afterwards). 252 HP EVs maximize this valuable stat for any wall whereas while ("whereas" implies a somewhat notable contrast, but given that both are defensive stats, there isn't really the sort of contrast one would expect from "whereas") the remainder of remaining EVs are thrown into Defense alongside a Bold (You've listed Impish above?) nature to let it better take on physical attackers like Steelix. Magic Bounce is key to let Xatu perform its role as a hazard deterrent. It also bounces back status moves like Toxic, (RC) that can severely cripple the likes of Slowbro, Milktank, Vaporeon, and opposing Xatu using Toxic against it. Lastly, Rocky Helmet punishes and puts more pressure on Steelix while still annoying other physical attackers like Passimian on a predicted U-turn or and Gallade. ("attackers" is plural, so the follow-up must be too)

Usage Tips
========

The bread and butter of playing with Xatu is to keep hazards away. It should always pivot in (just to be 100% clear on the direction of pivot (in vs out)) on hazard setters it beats, like Steelix, Ferroseed, and Torterra. As for Stealth Rock users that can be a threat, (AC) it’s important to try to be on top of the mind games. Always ponder the risks of making a play of sending Xatu in on a predicted Stealth Rock or and potentially having it drop from a STAB move coming from Diancie, Rhydon, or Piloswine. If you have a Defog or Rapid Spin user though, it might be smart to try not to predict too much, especially if Xatu has any defensive value on in the match, such as checking Passimian, Gallade etc. (Not really sure about how "etc." is treated, but "checking Passimian or Gallade." probably sounds better here.) Try to always keep Xatu healthy with Roost, (RC) as it can’t switch into many Pokemon (removed aigu on the "e") it would check if its HP is too low, and full health might be important to make a couple of plays when dancing around Stealth Rock setters. However, it might be smart to U-turn on potential threats to Xatu that would otherwise switch in for free, (RC) like Sneasel, Heliolisk, and Vanilluxe. Using Toxic on these is also an option, but be careful of opposing Xatu as if it comes in on a predicted Toxic it will bounce back onto your Xatu and severely cripple it. Protect, if packed, should be used to scout against users of Choice items, (RC) like Passimian, Sneasel, and Vanilluxe. Lastly, be very careful around Pursuit users like Sneasel, (RC) as they can trap and eliminate Xatu making Stealth Rock free for the opponent, especially if Xatu lacks Protect (the syntax here is a little bit confusing. Do you mean that if Xatu lacks Protect that one should be especially careful around Pursuit trappers? Might want to do a bit of shuffling if so, since the separation of the two points makes it really hard to tell their relation. If I misread this, however, ignore me). This is especially enforced when important if Xatu is your only form of hazard removal.

Slowbro, Passimian, and the aforementioned Vanilluxe and Heliolisk are great options for this. Offensive moves other than Night Shade are an option as well: Grass Knot takes on Slowbro, Steelix, and Rhydon. The former latter (Given what you have said so far, I'm going to imagine you meant Rhydon, but feel free to ignore me if I'm wrong) is especially important to beat as a hazard setter. Psychic deals reliable damage against most Pokemon (removed the aigu on the "e") that don’t resist it. It most notably also lets Xatu hit Garbodor with a lot more strength (possibly add "than its other moves") and handles Fighting-types like Hariyama better. Signal Beam hite mostly opposing Psychic-types, (RC) like the Slowbrothers (While this is the best made-up name for a duo I've heard in a while, I must confess I doubt it will be allowed :v) and Malamar. Dazzling Gleam hits Guzzlord and Scrafty while still keeping Sneasel as a target. Speaking of other offensive moves, offensive sets of Xatu aren’t bad either, but they give up a lot of the reliability in hazard control that defensive variants provides. That being said, Xatu will more often than not prefer the constant damage output from Night Shade over other offensive moves, hitting all of the above targets for consistent damage.

Another option is Calm Mind, (AC) giving it an excellent matchup against Stall courtesy of together with ("courtesy of" sounds a little odd, given you've not mentioned SP before, and SP only really works because of CM in this case) Stored Power, but this gives up some of its ability to deal with more offensive playstyles. (Added period) and (Sentence got a little convoluted and confusing, so I separated the pieces to be a bit clearer) Furthermore, there are far better users of this move in the tier and Xatu is usually better off using the aforementioned moves. Lastly, Xatu can use Reflect and Light Screen alongside a Light Clay to support offensive partners like Weaknesses Policy Incineroar, Bulk Up Braviary, and Omastar in offensive archetypes.

**Anti-Xatu Entry Hazard Setters**: Several users of Stealth Rock can scare away Xatu with super effective (de-capitalized the "s" and "e") STAB moves, severely hurting Xatu’s role and usefulness, (RC): (Introducing a list, so a colon is preferable here) Diancie, Rhydon, and Piloswine are notable examples. Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog, courtesy of Mold Breaker.

Other Dark-types like Guzzlord and Absol, despite not outruight trapping Xatu, can also be a big threats ("Dark-types" is plural) to it.

**Electric-types**: Heliolisk doesn’t take any damage from Night Shade, (RC) and is only really scared of U-turn or Toxic. Other Electric-types like Rotom and Vikavolt are also notable despite getting hit by Night Shade. After coming in on Xatu, all (de-capitalized the "a") three after coming in on Xatu (Previous syntax was a tiny bit odd since I was pretty sure the "after coming in on Xatu" part required nesting between commas; I might be wrong, though, so ignore this change if I misread this) can safely force it out and grab momentum with Volt Switch or fire a strong STAB boosted hit.

**Ice-types**: The likes of Vanilluxe, Cryogonal, Regice, and Articuno can come in for pretty much for free and force Xatu out, but neither none (pretty sure "neither" only ever works with two cases, so "neither" --> "none") of them appreciate a Toxic.

**Ghost-types**: In a similar vein, Decidueye, Dhelmise, Haunter, and Mismagius can also come in for free and force Xatu out and come in for free (They come in first then force Xatu out, I imagine, so the sequencing here was odd). Haunter also benefits from an immunity to Toxic.

Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog, courtesy because of Mold Breaker.

**Dark-types**: The likes of Sneasel and Houndoom can trap Xatu with Pursuit and let teammates set hazards without many worries. Xatu can try to dodge them avoid being Pursuit-trapped with U-turn, but it still can get worn down with the mind games and getting constantly pressured be careful of being outplayed and unable to Roost. That being said, it can still scout with Protect and take these down one-on-one (hyphenated) if locked into Pursuit. Other Dark-types like Guzzlord and Absol, despite not outrught outright trapping Xatu, can be a big threat to it.

**Electric-types**: Heliolisk doesn’t take any damage from Night Shade, (RC) and is only really scared of U-turn or Toxic. Other Electric-types like Rotom and Vikavolt are also notable despite getting by Night Shade. All three after coming in on Xatu can safely force it out and grab momentum with Volt Switch or fire a strong STAB boosted hit.

**Ice-types**: The likes of Pokemon like Vanilluxe, Cryogonal, Regice, and Articuno can come switch in for pretty much free and force Xatu out, but neither none of them appreciate a Toxic.

**Ghost-types**: In a similar vein, Decidueye, Dhelmise, Haunter, and Mismagius can also force Xatu out and come switch in for free. Haunter also benefits from an immunity to Toxic.
There is a lot of fluff in this analysis that I took out. I do not think I got everything. I tried to reword some things so it would still make sense. I also consulted a couple of QC members (quziel and kay) to make sure if I removed anything that the analysis wasn't missing anything important. A lot of sentences were worded awkwardly so I did my best to make them sound more natural.

lyd regardless of the grammar, I still feel like I learned how to use Xatu. My changes were just to make the sentences flow better.

Xatu has Access to Roost, U-turn, and a bunch of utility options that let it Xatu excel at the pivoting role it's known for, (comma) As another advantage, its type and its typing stands out in giving it a quad 4x resistance to Fighting-type moves. A last valuable trait is Xatu’s Xatu's solid matchup against stall teams, being able to bounce back status moves like Toxic to targets like Pyukumuku. That being said, hazard setters like Rhydon, Diancie, and Piloswine can threaten it out with their STAB moves, making it necessary to win a bunch of mind games and fifty-fifties just to keep hazards away. Xatu is also prone to getting trapped by Sneasel and Houndoom, which could make it it tough for Xatu’s Xatu's team to fight against hazards. Mold Breaker ignores Xatu's Magic Bounce, allowing Druddigon to set up Stealth Rock against teams that use Xatu as hazard control. Lastly, Xatu's bulk can be rather underwhelming, making it so meaning players have to be very cautious to let it get worn down too fast. Likewise, its typing leaves it vulnerable to common Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-types, which are quite common in the tier.

Moves
========

Toxic can put opposing walls on a timer as well as help stall opponents opposing Pokemon out. It’s also a great tool to punish Pokemon that would otherwise switch in for free, like Rhydon, Braviary, and Heliolisk. Protect lets Xatu scout for Choice-locked moves, most notably from Heliolisk, Passimian, and Sneasel. Toxic and Protect can also be used together by forfeiting giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn, letting Protect also serve as a powerful method of Toxic stalling the foe, but giving up some of Xatu's mobility with U-turn. This lets Xatu beat Pokemon such as Vanilluxe and Guzzlord one-on-one but also lets Heliolisk and Vanilluxe switch in for free due to the lack of U-turn. Defog can be used to remove Stealth Rock from Druddigon but also as well as from other setters that beat it, like Rhydon and Diancie.

Set Details
========

Xatu's Speed EVs allow it to be faster than Incineroar. 252 HP EVs maximize this stat, (AC) and the remainder of EVs are thrown into Defense alongside a Bold nature to better take on physical attackers like Steelix. Magic Bounce is key to let Xatu perform its role as an entry hazard deterrent. It also bounces back status moves like Toxic that can to severely cripple Slowbro, Milktank, Vaporeon, and opposing Xatu using Toxic against it. Lastly, Rocky Helmet puts more pressure on Steelix while still annoying other physical attackers like Passimian or Gallade.

Usage Tips
========

The main point of using Xatu is to keep entry hazards away. It should always pivot on hazard setters it beats, like Steelix, Ferroseed, and Torterra. As for Stealth Rock users that can be a threat, (AC) it’s it's important to ponder the risk of sending in Xatu on predicted Stealth Rock or potentially having it drop from a STAB move from Diancie, Rhydon, or Piloswine. If you have a Defog or Rapid Spin user it might be smart to not predict too much, especially if Xatu has any defensive value on the match, such as checking the likes of Passimian (RC) and Gallade, or others. Try to keep Xatu healthy with Roost, as it can’t can't switch in to into many Pokemon it would check if it’s its HP is too low, and full health might be important to make a couple plays when dancing around Stealth Rock setters. However, it might be smart to U-turn on out of potential threats to Xatu that would otherwise switch in for free, like Sneasel, Heliolisk, and Vanilluxe. Using Toxic on these is also an option, but be careful of opposing Xatu, (AC) as if it comes in on a predicted Toxic it will bounce Toxic back to your Xatu and severely cripple it. Protect, if used, should be used to scout against users of Choice items, like Passimian, Sneasel, and Vanilluxe. Lastly, be very careful around Pursuit users like Sneasel if Xatu lacks Protect, as they can trap and eliminate it, allowing the opponent to set up Stealth Rock. This is especially important when Xatu is your only form of hazard removal.

Team Options
========

Secondary forms of hazard removal can be useful for balance teams that don’t don't want to immediately lose to hazards setters that beat Xatu. Silvally-Steel and Blastoise are great examples that can remove hazards for Xatu. If your team can’t can't fit a secondary form of hazard control, offensive Pokemon that can pressure Rhydon and Diancie can be useful to keep them in check and punish Stealth Rock. Slowbro, Passimian, Vanilluxe, and Heliolisk are great options for this. Considering how Xatu pretty much nullifies Steelix’s Steelix's presence in a match, partners like Heliolisk and Comfey that struggle with this are great choices. Defensive Pokemon that can cover up Xatu’s Catu's weaknesses are solid teammates. Steelix, Ferroseed, and Silvally-Steel take on a couple threats to Xatu, such as Vikavolt, Vanilluxe, and Diancie. Likewise, Hariyama and other Fighting-types can cover Xatu's Dark-type weakness, mainly Sneasel, as it can pursuit-trap Pursuit trap Xatu.

Other Options
=============

Offensive moves other than Night Shade are an option as well. (period) Grass Knot takes on Slowbro, Steelix, and Rhydon, (AC) the latter of which, Rhydon is especially important to beat as an entry hazard setter. Psychic deals reliable damage against most Pokemon that don’t don't resist it. Offensive sets of Xatu aren’t aren't bad, but they give up a lot of the reliability in hazard control that defensive variants provides provide. That being said Furthermore, Xatu will more often than not prefer the constant damage output from Night Shade over other offensive moves because of the consistent damage.

Feather Dance can make Xatu more threatening to set up setup sweepers like Swords Dance Rhydon and Curse Steelix (RC) not and avoid becoming bait considering Night Shade’s Shade's low and predictable damage output. Thunder Wave can catch incoming Sneasel and Braviary and just slow down fast Pokemon in general. Another option is Calm Mind + Stored Power, giving it Xatu an excellent matchup against stall because of Stored Power, but this gives up some of its ability to deal with more offensive playstyles. There are far better users of this move in the tier, (AC) and Xatu is usually better off using the aforementioned moves. Lastly, Xatu can use Reflect and Light Screen alongside a Light Clay to support offensive partners like Weaknesses Weakness Policy Incineroar, Bulk Up Braviary, and Omastar in on offensive archetypes.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Anti-Xatu Select (or smth else less awkward) Entry Hazard Setters**: Several Stealth Rock users such as Diancie, Rhydon, and Piloswine can scare away Xatu with super effective STAB moves, severely limiting Xatu’s its role and usefulness. Druddigon also sets Stealth Rock for free on Xatu lacking Defog, because of Mold Breaker.

**Dark-types**: Sneasel and Houndoom can trap Xatu with Pursuit and let teammates set entry hazards without many worries. Xatu can try to avoid being Pursuit trapped (RH) with U-turn, but it should be careful of being outplayed and becoming unable to use Roost.

All three after coming in on Xatu, all three can safely force it out and grab momentum with Volt Switch or fire a strong STAB-boosted (AH) hit.

Haunter also benefits from an immunity is also immune to Toxic.
