New Move:
Dragon Energy:
Twister - Dragon-type
|
Dragon Energy: Special Move
| 150 BP | 100% Acc | 5 PP | The lower the user's HP, the lower the power.

New Ability:
Dragon's Maw: The power of Dragon-type moves is increased by 1.5x.

Pros:
- Immense HP stat complements well with Dragon Energy and can potentially help Regidrago set up with Dragon Dance thanks to high-HP Substitutes.
- Dragon's Maw's strong boost to Dragon-type moves allows Regidrago to blast through walls, especially with Dragon Energy at full HP.
- Access to decent coverage options means that Regidrago doesn't need to always rely on Dragon-type moves, most specifically being able to target Steel-types with either Thunder Fang or Hammer Arm.

Cons:
- Average Attack, Special Attack, and Speed stats mean that Regidraco may have trouble breaking through certain Pokemon even after boosting with Dragon Dance.
- Poor Defense and Special Defense leaves Regidraco fairly fragile despite its HP stat.
- An incredibly shallow movepool leaves Regidrago fairly predictable (for reference, the next strongest special move it has after Dragon Energy and Draco Meteor is Round).
- A lack of coverage for Fairy-types allows them to easily wall Regidrago.

Sets:
Setup:
Regidrago @ Leftovers
Ability: Dragon's Maw
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Fang
- Substitute
- Dragon Dance

With this set, Regidrago is able to set fairly bulky Substitutes and boost with Dragon Dance for a sweep. Fire Fang is chosen as a coverage move in order to hit Steel-types harder, but Hammer Arm is usable if you don't mind its Speed drop effect.

Trick Room:
Regidrago @ Dragon Fang
Ability: Dragon's Maw
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Dragon Energy
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Fang / Hammer Arm

With this set, Regidrago is able to take advantage of Trick Room and primarily spam Dragon Energy without fear of losing HP. The other moves are mostly niche in case Dragon Energy is less optimal; Draco Meteor is for when Regidrago is at low HP, while Dragon Claw is for the same reason if up against a more specially defensive foe. While Hammer Arm is useful for its Speed drops under Trick Room, Fire Fang helps a lot versus specifically Genesect.

A Choice Specs or Choice Scarf set could potentially be used for Regidrago as well. However, its mediocre Speed can leave it being attacked first and thus losing power from Dragon Energy when running Choice Specs, and a Choice Scarf set may not have the same amount of power as a Trick Room set due to being unable to invest into HP in order to keep Dragon Energy as powerful as possible. If any of you have successful experiences with such sets, though, please share them here!

On sets with bulk, it's better to invest in its defenses than HP because Regidrago's HP is so much higher. I doubt 128 Def / 128 SpDef is optimal (you want to tailor them to be able to live some hit that is to be determined), but for illustrative purposes:

252 SpA Life Orb Zapdos Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Regidrago: 395-465 (65.3 - 76.9%)
252 SpA Life Orb Zapdos Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 128 SpD Regidrago: 320-376 (59.1 - 69.5%)

252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Poltergeist vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Regidrago: 492-580 (81.4 - 96%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Poltergeist vs. 0 HP / 128 Def Regidrago: 399-471 (73.7 - 87%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Regarding Dragon Energy:
- Dragon Energy is stronger than Dragon Pulse when Regidrago is at 57% or higher HP
- Dragon Energy is stronger than Draco Meteor when Regidrago is at 87% or higher HP (but of course, it won't miss or drop your Special Attack)

I don't really think this thing will see much use in OU but the raw power is hard to ignore. It has the equivalent of about base 175 attack and sp attack when using Dragon moves. Unfortunately it can't really hurt Fairies which are very common in OU.

Also in terms of raw bulk 200 / 50 / 50 is kind of hard to quantify as very few Pokémon have that kind of stat spread, but it takes hits uninvested about as well as something with 100 / 90 / 90 stats. Not a wall, but it's tanky enough to eat a hit or two. But back to Regidrago offensively... as with all Pokemon you can just slap the right numbers into a damage calc and it will look nice on paper but not as good in practice. Ah well, here's some fun Draco calcs.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Blissey: 387-456 (54.2 - 63.8%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 248 HP / 92 SpD Amoonguss: 543-639 (125.9 - 148.2%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 252 HP / 228+ SpD Corviknight: 205-242 (51.2 - 60.5%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 275-324 (97.8 - 115.3%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Jirachi: 250-295 (73.3 - 86.5%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Ferrothorn: 220-260 (62.5 - 73.8%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Mandibuzz: 375-442 (88.4 - 104.2%)

You get similar enough results just dumping Draco Meteors onto the field once your HP drops. Also LO DD Outrage can deal similar "outrageous" damage. Seems neat as a gimmick or on Trick Room. Some fun calcs to compare it to...

252+ SpA Choice Specs Regidrago Dragon Energy vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 504-594 (147.8 - 174.1%)

252+ Atk Choice Band Strong Jaw Dracovish Fishious Rend (170 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 532-627 (156 - 183.8%)

252+ SpA Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew in Rain: 448-528 (131.3 - 154.8%)

252 SpA Choice Specs Regi-Electric Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew in Electric Terrain: 556-655 (163 - 192%)

252 SpA Choice Specs Solar Power Charizard Weather Ball (100 BP Fire) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew in Sun: 486-573 (142.5 - 168%)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 554-652 (162.4 - 191.2%)

I can get some replays at ~1700 with Scarf (Naive nature with max speed, so Genesect doesn't get an even stronger U-Turn) Regidrago, it's been decent.

Dragon Energy still nearly OHKOs Slowbro (if you're at full of course) and while base 80 speed isn't much to write about, with a Scarf you're outspeeding everything short of Pheromosa and punching holes in most of them. I use it mostly to punch through Ground types to make way for Regielecki (boosted from Koko's Terrain), and I run it with VoltTurn to get Regidrago in safely.

Losing HP to Rocks and having no hazard removal makes it questionable, but the power is still really quite nice. Of course it's very team dependent since Fairies are still omnipresent.

I was experimenting with regidrago and found that it had much better attacking moves.
I think a good moveset would be:
Regidrago @ Life Orb
Ability: Dragon's Maw
EVS: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 hp
Adamant Nature
Dragon Dance
Substitute/Thunder Fang
Dragon Claw
Hammer Arm/Thunder Fang

(This set is experimental)

I’m kind of feeling Assault Vest a little bit...

It’s HP stat let’s it just invest in Attack and Sp. Defence and Dragon typing has useful Fire, Water, Grass and Electric resistances.

It can sponge a +1 Ice Beam from Scarf Genesect and KO with Fire Fang, among other things.

Some calcs (stats changed accordingly and +1 to mimic Transistor/Dragon’s Maw boost):

+1 252 SpA Choice Specs Raichu Rising Voltage (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Druddigon in Electric Terrain: 220-259 (40.6 - 47.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ Atk Druddigon Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Raichu: 310-366 (102.9 - 121.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 SpA Choice Specs Genesect Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Druddigon: 330-390 (60.9 - 72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Moltres Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Druddigon: 208-246 (38.4 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Moltres Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Druddigon: 104-123 (19.2 - 22.7%) -- possible 5HKO

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Pheromosa Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Druddigon: 315-372 (58.2 - 68.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Just something I thought about.

So the new sample teams thread got a team featuring TR+Regidrago, I think this mon is worth discussing more

The team:
Credits to: sugarhigh, both for the team and showing that Regidrago isn't garbo

Here are some mid-high ladder replays showcasing it:

(As posted in the Metagame Discussion Thread)

Regidrago destroying webs Offense
In this replay as noted there is no fairy so Regidrago gets as many kills as it wants. In combination with Lunar Dance Cresselia it is able to get back to full to continue the assault and sweep.

Regidrago 6 kills against Offense
In this replay Regidrago gets 6 kills it should be noted that it is able to even kill porygon2 that was above 70% with dragon energy. Furthermore it is able to take a +3 sucker punch from Libero Cinderace to take it out and eventually clean with Dragon Energy again in combination with Lunar Dance Cresselia.

Regidrago cleans TR w/ Ancient Power
In this replay Regidrago takes advantage of its natural speed to out speed and clean at the end with Ancient Power (just a fun replay of it using a move other than Dragon Energy haha!)

The team doesn't look bad at all, though I'd probably switch those 252 HP Evs on Regidrago and redistribute them to defenses, as its HP is so much higher than its defenses, you'd get better bulk investing on defenses directly.

This is not to say that Regidrago only fits on Trick Room, I think 80 Speed is already decent enough to outspeed most walls, and I guess good enough to run it Scarfed, though the overwhelming power of its Dragon STABs while running Specs is way too attractive to turn down. I cannot see DD sets being good, though, physical dragon STABs are way weaker than their special counterparts, while also being prone to stuff like burns, rocky helmet damage, or being locked while clicking Outrage (which by the way, cannot reliably 2HKO stuff that the Special set can, such as PhysDef Ferro and Corviknight), though if any of you found any success with either Band or DD sets, I'm curious to check them out
