Random Battle Lead
Welcome to Week 3 of the Random Battles Team Tour, where 8 teams will compete for the title of RBTT Champion as well as a custom avatar!

Tournament Rules
  • The tournament will consist of 8 teams battling it out in a Round Robin format over seven weeks; after that, the four best teams overall will move onto playoffs.
  • Each series will be played as a Best of 3.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokémon Showdown.
  • Do not make baseless activity posts, get in contact with your opponent and report missed times / scheduling issues only.
  • Replays of the matches must be posted to verify a win; if replays are not posted, the match doesn't count.
General Tournament Rules
  • Scheduling: Attempt to contact your opponent by posting on their smogon profile as soon as possible. It is strongly advised to schedule publicly there on Smogon so the host can make any necessary activity calls. If you cannot get in contact with your opponent, inform the host in this thread so we can make any necessary substitution. If you have made no visible contact, the host may substitute you out for another player.
  • Timer Clause and Disconnections: The timer is not required to be on during games; however, if the timer is on and a player runs out of time, their opponent wins the game via timeout. If a player disconnects and thus times out, this also counts as a loss for the player who disconnected.
  • Don't ghost.

Doing my first ever "educated guesses" over who will win a round in RBTT. This is based off what I have witnessed from each player and the best clues I have regarding each one.

If I've chosen someone else over you, this doesn't mean you're 'inferior' to them, it is just based on my experience who I think will have the better 'GXE' vs whomever they are fighting. I'm sure you're all great. I mean why else would you be drafted??

Arcanine (4) vs Hoopa (8)

Gen 8 Random Battle: teresbahji vs Zap - I used to play Zap a lot on the ladder and was a tough one. I also can't deny teres is a good player so this will be exciting to watch.

Gen 8 Random Battle: The Immortal vs Panty&Stockings - Played P & S many times on ladder. Very slow, conscientious, and takes their time. I must say TI can often pull outstanding stunts and reverse the situation.

Gen 7 Random Battle: Lunar Sloth vs Betathunder - Lunar Sloth is a decent rands player but my experience with Betathunder tells me they will take this home.

Gen 5 Random Battle: PrinceofAllTacos vs TheFranklin - I drafted him last year and he was an outstanding Gen 5 player in Team Skymin. POAT is also amazing. While this is going to be neck-in-neck, I'm placing my bets on my old fellow team member.

Gen 4 Random Battle: MaswoodShaheb vs Celever - I often watched Celly appear in the finals of room tours. He's overall a good player. I also can't deny Maswood is a thinker in battle and can be outstanding based on my fights with him in Multi Format Tour.

Gen 3 Random Battle: HeadsIloseTailsYouWin vs Glop - I saw this player near the top of the ladder and he has proven that capability in his battles with his great playstyle. Anna is also an amazing player, despite me just knowing about them this RBTT. This will be very fun to watch tbh.

Gen 8 Monotype Random Battle: Sylveon used Calm Mind vs PA - Sylv is incredible at Monotype, let alone regular rands. I drafted PA last year in Skymin and he was a superb player to have. I see sylv winning this the same way they win almost every Monotype I see them engage in.

Gen 8 Hackmons Cup: Shadowss4 vs platinumCheesecake - I played vs plat in a Hackmons Cup workshop and I must say that based on the logs, he is very cognizant about why an opponent would switch in a particular scenario and he tries to make the most sense out of every scenario to make a solid, educated guess as to how the battle should be played.

Gen 8 Random Doubles Battle: JonahRamone vs Snorlax142857 - Ramone has played doubles in a while from what I've seen.

Gen 7 Battle Factory: sigmatecture vs temp - Another former Skymin member, peapod is a great player altogether.

Gen 7 BSS Factory: ckilgannon vs soTsoT - soT has demonstrated skill in various formats from what I've seen, but ckil is no pushover so this will be a good fight.

Gen 8 Doubles Hackmons Cup: PikminWarrior vs karloco - Karloco won many tours and grand prizes in our room, but going based off of performance thus far this RBTT.

Winner
: Hoopa

Kyogre (4) vs Galarian Zapdos (6)

Gen 8 Random Battle: chemcoop vs BoRida. - Anybody's game really. Excellent Gen 8 players and this will be a colossal fight. Bolding BoRida due to his consistent record and bringing two accounts in the top of Gen 8 ladder - one with 92 GXE.

Gen 8 Random Battle: odr vs Prosaic - Anybody's game really, once again. I bolded Prosaic just because of my experience with him in this format and how much thought he puts into his plays.

Gen 7 Random Battle: GaryAjax vs apologies - Based on my tryouts with this user, I think he has what it takes, really good.

Gen 5 Random Battle: ajhockeystar vs mc56556 - aj is great. Won a few tours in the room though haven't seen him play Gen 5 but judging based on his previously seen playstyle.

Gen 4 Random Battle: bugzinator vs Jytcampbell - Very consistent Ws last year in RBTT, bugzinator is quite good.

Gen 3 Random Battle: Roginald vs xGang - xGang is a popular old gens figure and has proven so in his recent RBTT battles. Very solid.

Gen 8 Monotype Random Battle: Anthonyy23 vs CMDoge - No levitate Gengar in this gen so Anthonyy will take this home. Jokes aside, I saw him play more and he'd have what it takes to win.

Gen 8 Hackmons Cup: TheCoastsofToast vs lvl100Blaziken - Josh has rocked me in Hackmons and CC 1v1. TCOT has a good record thus far in Hackmons this time around and I wonder if Josh will have what it takes to end his run.

Gen 8 Random Doubles Battle: Memoric vs LoSconosciuto - A solid Gen 8 (and other gens) player I'm familiar with. Probes his plays and finds a way to win.

Gen 7 Battle Factory: TJ vs ORAS-Mega - I know TJ is great at tiered formats from what I've heard. I don't know about ORAS-Mega in BF but I know he's a decent Gen 7 /8 rands player.

Gen 7 BSS Factory: Z-Strats vs Lambovino - Based on record thus far.

Gen 8 Doubles Hackmons Cup: Andyboy vs Pirate Princess - Based on /rank, Pirate has a comparatively good GXE and played a lot of Hackmons Cup.

Winner: G-Zapdos.

Yveltal (8) vs Marshadow (4)

Gen 8 Random Battle: pokeblade101 vs swift mons - I mean, I started ever playing rands when blade did and have watched the most of his battles. I'm most familiar with his playstyle than any other player. swift mons is also a high ladderer so I expect a gargantuan clash in this one.

Gen 8 Random Battle: MichaelderBeste2 vs i want a lamp - Lamp pulls amazing stunts, but Michael has given me as equal a competition as blade on the Gen 8 ladder. He's exemplary, makes a lot of predicts, and is overall really fun to play with as a high ladderer.

Gen 7 Random Battle: MJ vs velvet - Mostly familiar with MJ and I can say he's a decent Gen 7/8 rands player.

Gen 5 Random Battle: Damm u Captcha vs Trade - This was honestly hard. There's less bias here since Damm u was in my team last year, but with the battles I recall doing with Trade before, I'd say they're great and can take this one home. But Damm u is solid as well so I expect a good series here.

Gen 4 Random Battle: SMB vs neycwang - Another former Skymin who many of us would consider for old gens. He's taking this home.

Gen 3 Random Battle: Dragonillis vs Abyssal Ruins - Though I've seen Dragon mostly do BF and BSSF, I can say it's safe he can apply his excellent playstyle in other gens as well.

Gen 8 Monotype Random Battle: adjustments vs Cheese555 - I've battled Cheese a few times in Gen 8 and he's one of the 'good players of Gen 8' that I have in my mind.

Gen 8 Hackmons: Lucas2543 vs Nudepantsman - Battled lucas a lot in doubles, including Doubles Hackmons Cup. He's quite great as long as luck works in his favour.

Gen 8 Random Doubles Battle: fitzy72 vs HeroicTobias - I was going to draft HT for doubles. fitzy will pose a good competition but HT always specialized in dubs so he'll win this.

Gen 7 Battle Factory: Hamhamhamhamham vs King Leo V - Based on performance thus far in RBTT. I heard a lot of things about ham.

Gen 7 BSS Factory: 85Percent vs Maki - A recent replacement who came in and did quite well. Not sure about how they do in BSS, but they can apply recently demonstrated skills here as well.

Gen 8 Doubles Hackmons Cup: LandFrogg vs My Big Diggersby - I've seen LandFrogg around for a while and he has comparatively higher rank in Hackmons Cup, but MBD is no pushover. A fun competition this will be to see.

Winner: Yveltal.

Pretty funky, this is because the game rounds to integers when calculating damage.

You'd think given the first calc that the max roll for +2 Blaziken is 199 x 2 = 398. But because multiplying by +2 attack happens at an internal step within the damage calculation, you get a small rounding error that propagates as you move through the rest of the formula, ending at 395 instead. A bit of corroborating evidence that this is due to the Swords Dance boost can be seen from how the HP/dmax state doesn't matter here:
+2 Lvl 78 84 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. Lvl 80 84 HP / 84 Def Tapu Koko: 335-395 (137.8 - 162.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Possible damage amounts: (335, 339, 343, 347, 351, 355, 359, 363, 367, 370, 374, 378, 382, 386, 390, 395)

+2 Lvl 78 84 Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. Lvl 80 84 HP / 84 Def Dynamax Tapu Koko: 335-395 (68.9 - 81.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Possible damage amounts: (335, 339, 343, 347, 351, 355, 359, 363, 367, 370, 374, 378, 382, 386, 390, 395)

If you're interested,
The actual damage calculation formula is

Damage = { [ ( 2 * Level ) / 5 + 2 ] * [ Power ] * [ Attacking Stat ] / [Defending Stat * 50] + 2 } * Modifier

where each multiplication is rounded, and division is rounded down, to the nearest integer.

Let's use this to calculate the max rolls for +0 and +2 Atk Blaziken.
Again notice how HP doesn't matter, only the Atk/SpA and Def/SpD are used. Here the Modifier = STAB * Max Roll * Life Orb = 1.5 * 1.0 * 1.3 = 1.95
since we're using STAB, looking at max roll, and get the Orb boost.

Now let's simplify the damage formula with integer rounding in the +0 Atk case, for Level = 78, Power = 120 BP, Attack = 232, and Def = 182:
Damage = { [ ( 2 * Level ) / 5 + 2 ] * [ Power ] * [ Attacking Stat ] / [Defending Stat * 50] + 2 } * Modifier
= { [ ( 2 * 78 ) / 5 + 2 ] * [ 120 ] * [ 232 ] / [182 * 50] + 2 } * 1.95
= { [ 156 / 5 + 2 ] * [ 120 ] * [ 232 ] / 9100 + 2 } * 1.95 we'll apply division rounding here

= { [ 33 ] * [ 120 ] * [ 232 ] / 9100 + 2 } * 1.95 again, division rounding
= { 918720 / 9100 + 2 } * 1.95 "
= (100 + 2) * 1.95 multiplication rounding

= 199
This matches the damage calc!

Finally for +2 Atk Blaziken,
Damage = { [ ( 2 * Level ) / 5 + 2 ] * [ Power ] * [ Attacking Stat ] / [Defending Stat * 50] + 2 } * Modifier
= { [ ( 2 * 78 ) / 5 + 2 ] * [ 120 ] * [ 464 ] / [182 * 50] + 2 } * 1.95
= { 1837440 / 9100 + 2 } * 1.95
Here's the main difference from the previous calc -- division on a bigger number due to +2 Attack:
= (201 + 2) * 1.95
= 395

And this is why you should always calc.
