CM clef sits on torn-t and slowbro and can use them to set up CM's. Tornadus-t does 42% and while knocking clef helps it it has to consistently hit hurricanes and has to get confusions in order to break through. Clefable completely sits on slowbro and its a free Calm mind for it. After one Calm mind boost clefable is basically unbreakable, and tornadus-t has to risk missing, paralysis, and sp. sttack drops

this is break this core! welcome back :blobpex:

:master ball: Threats of the Round :master ball:

:volcarona: Fiery Moth gets in the way of this core thanks to its great bulk and quiver dance, threatening with a sweep after taking koko's or melmetal's attacks with little dificulties.

:ferrothorn: Mixed Ferrothorn doing Ferrothorn things, Durian is able to break this core with its great stats and ability to punish the opponents with hazards, leech seed and iron barbs. watch out for superpower and it'll be piece of cake!

:hippowdon: Physdef Hippowdon comes all the way from the DLC 1 to check Melmetal and punish it with Rocky Helmet while also keeping Tapu Koko in check thanks to its Ground-typing and reliable recovery.

:premier ball: Additional Notes :premier ball:
:magnezone: The pair of magnets finds its way into many recent teams, this time also being able to check this dangerous core with its great typing and movepool. however, it needs good predictions vs Melmetal as Eearthquake and Superpower can dent it on the switch. magnetism for the win!

:nidoking: This powerful wallbreaker can stop Tapu Koko from spamming Thunderbolt, though it has problems to switch into Melmetal due to its frailty.

:quagsire: Finally, even though Quagsire can break this core with its typing and reliable recovery, Quagsire itself is a bit niche and is usually only available on stall teams where there are better options.

:assault-vest: :ss/tornadus-therian: Round 12: Tornadus-T + Slowbro :ss/slowbro: :colbur-berry:

This recent pair of lures forms a nice core in bulky offense and balance teams thanks to its amazing double Regenerator, being a pain to deal with for offensive teams that rely on Pokemon like Melmetal to punch holes. They can cover each other's weaknesses too, as Tornadus-T can take on Ghost-types like Dragapult and Blacephalon, and Slowbro manages threatening physical attackers like Melmetal and Weavile, while also providing its fellow wallbreakers opportunities to clean with its pivot moves. How would you break the double Regenerator core?

Kyurem @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Earth Power

Although this set has been seeing less use as of late it is still very potent especially against this core.

Kyurem basically only needs to use its Ice type coverage against this core. Since Slowbro gets cleanly OHKO'd by Freeze-Dry and Tornadus-T risks dying in one hit as well especially with rocks up. Torn cannot dodge the 2HKO from Freeze-Dry either by knocking the Specs so Freeze-Dry is overall a safe move to press if you don't mind taking the Knock.

Kyurem could potentially switch in on the attacks this core throws around since you don't really need HP to break this core. Still losing its Specs on a Knock makes you way less threatening and Body Press does a good amount of chip so it should just be pivoted in safely.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyurem Freeze-Dry vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro: 452-534 (114.7 - 135.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Dragapult @ Dragon Fang

Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 92 Atk / 164 SpA / 252 Spe

Hasty Nature
- Dragon Darts

- Hex
- Thunder Wave

- U-turn

Av torn-t is a good check to Dragapult which means this set also acts as a lure, taking advantage of the fact that this core is very status weak and not supported by tapu fini due to overlap with slowbro. this pult easily 2hkos torn-t with dragon fang boosted dragon darts while still perfectly 2hkoing slowbro with hex, which means ohko if hex is boosted. If bro has future sight, you run virtually no risk in staying in and click twave. scald burn would be annoying and ice beam hurts, but on a team with hex pult is sensible to have complementary status users to hit a broader spectrum of targets anyway.
92 atk evs with dragon fang also allow dragon darts to 2hko blissey after a single u-turn of damage, which is very handy as blissey is one of the hardest counters to the hex spam strategy and just pult in general.

in the broader context of battle, pult has an easy time when it's positioned vs slowbro with little to no reason to click anything but thunder wave on the predicted switch-in. Catching tornadus-t with thunder wave is massive for those mid speed tier wallbreakers that pair well with pult, main ones being kart and shifu.

Draco meteor > twave and shadow ball > hex are viable options to retain effectiveness in handling urshifu and kartana.

Blacephalon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Shadow Ball
- Overheat
- Trick

Overview:
Blacephalon is a strong breaker against this core, threatening both Tornadus and Slowbro with its STAB's. Slowbro easily folds to Shadow Ball, and Tornadus-T is always 2HKO'd by Overheat, and can potentially be OHKO'd from full if Stealth Rock is up. The main weakness it has in breaking this core is having to guess who is coming in on the switch. Even then, Overheat always does over 50% to Slowbro, and Flamethrower has a 33.2% chance to 2HKO Tornadus. Plus, most Blacephalon teams have heavy hazard support, meaning that the Slowbro/Tornadus player is getting their pokemon worn down into range of Blacephalon by Spikes/Stealth Rock, meaning they can lose their defensive backbone even if they guess right.

Relevant Damage Calcs:
252 SpA Choice Specs Blacephalon Overheat vs. 252 HP / 88 SpD Assault Vest Tornadus-Therian: 235-277 (64.9 - 76.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock)

Ability: Psychic Surge

- Psyshock

- Thunderbolt/Focus Blast

Torn-Bro core thinks that it can handle Lele well by pivoting around to scout for its Choice-Locked Moves that each mon takes advantage of - Torn can take anything but Psyshock and proceed to Knock the choice item, while Bro takes Psyshocks that force out Torn really well and uses the opportunity to set up a Terrain-boosted Future Sight.

However, this pivoting tactic will fail if the Lele is not choiced-locked. Hence, CM Lele proceeds to deceive the core into believing that they scouted for a move successfully, only to get set up on and faint to Lele's moves.

Lele can switch into Slowbro easily as it doesn't take much damage from it (Torn too, but need to be a bit careful of Hurricanes and Knock), setups and breaks the core.

Right off the bat this thing gets in vs those 2 without any worry, ice beam slowbro? does up to 50 only and gets 2hko, and AV torn usually never goes into another torn worrying about knock, and once torn-t gets a plot up (super easily btw) av torn cannot switch in savely, and EVEN if you are in with the AV torn vs the NP torn, u arent guarantee to 2hko with cane, so it just gets out of control. this thing gets in, gets a free plot up on so many mons fearing the knock, toxic or taunt, and its no difference here, and another thing that boosts this is that NP torn is a set that is from the days of old, where crown tundra was still young. nowadays noone expects it and usually will write it off as "oh it will do a little damage, so i should just pivot into my knock absorber or special tank, and cripple it with knock" which in this case is A. Slowbro and B. AV Torn-T, which warrants it a free +2.

An alternative to beating torn-t in one shot is having knock over heatwave

Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Triple Axel
- Beat Up
- Knock Off

- Ice Shard

A quick sum-up about our sharp-clawed friend, Weavile has gotten two buffs that were quite huge for it! Triple axel and Heavy-Duty Boots have allowed Weavile to function as such an excellent breaker forcing insane pressure on Offense and Bulky teams alike as the combination of its excellent stabs, seemingly infinite longevity thanks to Boots and its self-Knock Off support, and strong priority Ice shard it has proven itself to be quite the metagame threat, being ranked on A+ or S- on people's tierlists depending on who you ask!
Weavile is not a stranger to trying out new things: Life orb, Never-Melt Ice and Choice Band are all viable options! But Choice Band was never Weavile's style-- Not because it would look ugly on it or it's a bad item for it but because it has always preferred Swords dance sets thanks to its excellent offensive typing being able to force a lot of switches combined with it's alright special bulk and defensively potent Dark typing-- However! This is still a very fun set to use as it frees up the Swords dance moveslot allowing to experiment with moves like Poison jab, Low kick, Assurance and the bread and butter of this lure-- Beat up.

For those unfamiliar, Beat Up is quite the move!: This is a move that allows Weavile to hit its target 1-5 times depending on how many party healthy members (No status conditions!) are alive and kicking, The catch is that each hit will use a Pokémon's attack; This is the formula: (User's Base Attack ÷ 10) + 5
While calculating the move's power can be a chore since it depends on the team-- I've found that typically it'll probably have around 110 Base Power total on average on the teams where you'd use it.

Weavile's Beat Up damage will take place first, and it's always base 17 power, this allows Weavile to waste Slowbro's Colbur berry then retaliate with a full-on onslaught with an effectively 93 base power move (Almost identical to a boosted Knock Off!)
(Beat Up is not a contact move! I always thought it was-- This means that it's quite risk-free to click vs Rocky Helmet Corviknight, Slowbro and Ferrothorn etc.!)

NOTICE: Please be mindful that it's impossible to properly calculate Beat Up damage as far as I know using the Calculator- Thus I've edited Ice shard to become a Dark type move with 17 base power replicating Weavile's first Beat up hit
And I've edited Throat Chop to be 93 base power representing the rest of party's average damage
For the sake of convenience I'll edit the calculation a little to properly display the move but do note this is how I calcualted it.

252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Beat Up (17 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Colbur Berry Slowbro: 30-36 (7.6 - 9.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Maximum damage:

Before getting into this round's analysis and next round's core, co-hosts (Tyson and me) would like to make two quick announcements! Those being:

1. We're looking for extra help when we both are busy with irl stuff. If you're interested dm us here on Smogon or Discord (Windingsss#8996 and Tysonslayer#8583)!

2. As a way to let community get involved with the project, we will be accepting cores from posters from this round and onwards! Just make a post telling us which core would you like to see in the project or just a core you like and leave sets. We'll take these into consideration for next rounds.

With that out of the way, lets start with this round!

:master ball: Threats of the Round :master ball:

:zeraora: As an Electric-type, Zeraora is able to break this core with its powerful Plasma Fists when boosted by Bulk Up. However, it might need to set up against Tornadus-T as Slowbro can burn it if it doesnt OHKO...

:polteageist: What a teapot! Polteageist joins this week's threats of the round because of its effective Shell Smash set that can blank Tornadus-T and break through Slowbro easily.

:tapu-lele: Calm Mind Tapu Lele is a dangerous sweeper that takes advantage of these types of cores that dont deal much damage to it. Moonblast the core away.

:premier ball: Additional Notes :premier ball:
:clefable: We think Clefable has the tools to break this core; however, we found it to be hard to fit into a serious team.

:tapu-koko: Electric-types are still very strong and capable, and Koko is not an exception. However, it might need to watch out for Knock Off as loosing Heavy-Duty Boots may cripple its pivot role.

:kyurem: Kyurem has to think twice before clicking a move because Slowbro can take on pretty much all of its moves besides Freeze-Dry, but Tornadus-T can tank one of those and knock Specs off. Overall, solid Pokemon, just needs right predictions.

:heavy-duty-boots: :ss/tapu-koko: Round 12: Tapu Koko + Victini :ss/victini: :heavy-duty-boots:

This pivot core has shown what its capable of, as this core together can pressure common defensive cores and give each other opportunities to punch holes after removing their checks, with Victini sporting a powerful V-Create and Glaciate to nail Ground-types and Koko providing Speed control, a boost to Victini's Bolt Strike and longevity. Gastrodon @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
Ability: Sticky Hold / Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Clear Smog / Toxic

Gastrodon stops this core with its godly typing and defensive stats. It can always come in on both of these pokemon and threaten them with a super-effective STAB Earthquake. Scald can cripple switchins that are put into the field by Tapu Koko and Victini's U-Turn. Clear Smog can help versus setup sweepers such as Volcarona, while Toxic can cripple them and other pokemon so they are put in on a timer. With recover, it doesn't care about chip damage done from their repeated attacks. Boots allows Gastrodon to not be chipped by hazards, but leftovers can be helpful to regen off the damages from U-Turns and other form of chip damage. Sticky Hold can be helpful whenever Koko and Victini's teammates try to knock its item off. Pretty straight forward.

(set stolen from Abhi's ttar post from the metagame discussion)

Tyranitar is able to break through this core since even though Dazzling Gleam doesn't 2HKO Tyranitar due to the Special Defense boost form sand, and Victini can't do much to it damage due to its Fire resistance. Stone Edge is massively powerful as it can OHKO Tapu Koko. Crunch is good since against Victini so it doesn't rely on the on Stone Edge's inaccuracy.

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 8 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 315-372 (111.3 - 131.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Swampert @ Leftovers

EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Flip Turn
- Earthquake
- Toxic

Even tho Swampert dropped down in usage, it still serves as a good Pokemon against this core, as it can pressure both Tapu Koko and Victini with its STAB move in Earthquake and it can gain momentum via Flip Turn on them. Furthermore it can lay out Stealth Rock on both of these Pokemon without trouble. With Toxic it is able to pressure both Tapu Koko and Victini and it is also able to pressure their teammates. Swampert can also come in on them and tank hits and threaten them. Both, Tapu Koko and Victini also cannot make use of their Electric-type moves in Thunderbolt and Bolt Strike, as Swampert is immune to them due to it being part Ground-type. So Swampert makes up for a good Pokemon against this core.
