For the Checks category, there is a tie b/w Da Pizza Man and The Metric System and Spoo wins for Counters !
Gz to all the winners!

WEEK: 8

:astrolotl:
Astrolotl @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpD / 184 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spikes
- Fire Lash
- Stomping Tantrum
- Encore / Will-O-Wisp

For our next week, we have Astrolotl, which has had a major resurge in its usage, deservedly so, making good progress vs most teams with a combination of spikes, encore and fire lash.
Let us find answers to it!!

Bonus points for non obvious answers ( like pult/fini in this case ), but make sure they fulfill other roles too that justify running it on a team. A one liner describing it's use outside of checking/countering the victim would be nice.

The deadline for submissions is January 17th 7am GMT +0. Happy submitting!!

Pajantom @ Choice Band
Ability: Comatose
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spirit Shackle
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Toxic / Ice Punch

Pajantom is a very strong check to utility Astrolotl. Not only is it immune to potential status moves Astrolotl could be running (such as Will-O-Wisp or Thunder Wave) thanks to its ability in Comatose, it also takes minimal damage from Fire Lash and Stomping Tantrum. Pajantom is not necessarily a surefire counter to utility Astrolotl, as Pajantom cannot always manually switch into it and beat it; for example, if Pajantom is at low health, the combination of Fire Lash and Stomping Tantrum can take it out. However, if Pajantom is given a free switch when healthy, it easily forces Astrolotl out with the threat of a Choice Band Earthquake OHKO.

Relevant Calcs:
252 Atk Choice Band Pajantom Earthquake vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Astrolotl: 426-502 (113.6 - 133.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Fire Lash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Pajantom: 60-72 (19.4 - 23.3%) -- possible 5HKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Stomping Tantrum vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Pajantom: 76-90 (24.5 - 29.1%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Level: 100
Modest Nature
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 32 HP / 224 SpA / 252 Spe
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Taunt

Are you running Astro as Tran Check?
Or Lando?
Flying Toad is your worst nightmare.

This is a Counter to Astro as long as air balloon is afloat. After that it still loses to Astro so be fast.
I nicked the EVs from monotype and changed it to Modest. Other evs might be preferable but I was too lazy to figure those out.

Air balloon Heatran is fun. Use it

doubleposting sry yall

Gastrodon @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain / Sticky Hold
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Toxic / Clear Smog / Scald

Gastrodon is an effective counter to utility Astrolotl. As with Pajantom (which I mentioned in my last post) Gastrodon also takes minimal damage from Fire Lash and Stomping Tantrum, even less, especially since it typically runs a fully physically defensive set. Additionally, Gastrodon is immune to Thunder Wave, and unlike other bulky Water-types like Arghonaut and Swampert, its damage output is not affected by Will-O-Wisp. To top it all off, not only can Gastrodon reliably heal off any damage taken from Astrolotl with Recover, it can also threaten significant damage back with Earth Power. All of these factors make it a great counter to Astrolotl, which it is consistently able to switch in on.

Relevant Calcs:
0 SpA Gastrodon Earth Power vs. 72 HP / 252 SpD Astrolotl: 188-224 (50.1 - 59.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Fire Lash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gastrodon: 42-50 (9.8 - 11.7%) -- possible 9HKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Stomping Tantrum vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gastrodon: 53-63 (12.4 - 14.7%) -- possible 7HKO

^those calcs really do be funny tho

Outside of countering Astrolotl, Gastrodon has some amazing utility. For example, although rain teams are relatively rare in the meta now, Storm Drain Gastrodon has a great matchup against Pokemon such as Barraskewda and Tornadus-T (though the latter to a less extent.) Gastrodon also has a good matchup into Arctozolt on hail teams, as they now mostly tend to run Blizzard rather than Freeze-Dry. But the utility doesn't stop here. Sticky Hold Gastrodon is a prime Knock Off absorber, coming in on and potentially poisoning prominent users of the move like Arghonaut and Weavile. Lastly, Gastrodon effectively checks threats like Krilowatt and Heatran. Very good mon, should be used more tbh.

Milotic @ Leftovers
Ability: Competitive
EVs: 248 HP / 208 Def / 52 SpD
Bold Nature
- Magic Coat
- Scald / Ice Beam
- Flip Turn / Toxic / Ice Beam
- Recover

I don't know much, but what I do know is that this is a more workable Astrolotl counter than Emolga was for Venomicon.

Competitive and your beefed up Defense means that Astro is actively putting itself in a worse position as it uses Fire Lash, and Tantrum does very little even at -2.

0 Atk Astrolotl Stomping Tantrum vs. -2 248 HP / 208 Def Milotic: 111-131 (28.2 - 33.3%) -- 0% chance to 3HKO

Magic Coat is what makes this very good into Astro, as you can deny it the support options it wants to use. Milotic has a lot of options I wish it could use all at once: I listed a couple that I think are justifiable for this set.

248/52 SpDef lets you take a Specs Pult Shadow Ball into -1 Shadow Ball from full and KO back with +2 Ice Beam. This situation will only happen once, but it's good to know. The rest goes into Defense because Milo needs it.

Stratagem @ Power Herb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Meteor Beam
- Paleo Wave
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power

Did you guys remember Stratagem existed? I didn't.

Stratagem is a CHECK. Stratagem comes in and doesn't care much for Astro's Fire Lashes or WoWs. It outspeeds, immediately forces Astro out and can set up its Meteor Beam. Stratagem loves having oppurtunities to do it's thing and Astro is a pretty good mon to do that on. While Strata doesn't love the occasional Twave, WoW is the status move on the set.

0 Atk Astrolotl Fire Lash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Stratagem: 66-78 (20.5 - 24.2%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

252 SpA Stratagem Meteor Beam vs. 72 HP / 252 SpD Astrolotl: 386-456 (102.9 - 121.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Noivern @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- U-turn/Defog
- Defog/Roost
- Flamethrower/Focus Blast/Hurricane

This is a Counter to Astrolotl. It resists Fire Lash and is immune to Stomping Tantrum. Draco Meteor is not always a guaranteed ohko, but when it doesn't it leaves Astrolotl in range of U-Turn to be able to switch out, and Defog can clear Spikes set by Astrolotl, or Roost can let it heal, although it can't live forever because of Fire Lash. Flamethrower and Focus Blast both hit Noivern's biggest weakness, Ice, and Focus Blast also hits Rock, while Hurricane is a strong Stab. Heavy-Duty Boots stops Stealth Rock from being a problem, and with Defog it can even clear them for teammates. U-Turn also removes the Defense drops on itself, and it is a Special attacker so Will-O-Wisp does not matter much. With Draco Meteor and high speed it hits a lot of other Dragon types extremely hard, and Focus Blast ohkos Adamant Weavile while Flamethrower ohkos Syclant, 2 Pokemon that beat it.

252 SpA Noivern Draco Meteor vs. 72 HP / 252 SpD Astrolotl: 360-426 (96 - 113.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Fire Lash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Noivern: 54-65 (17.3 - 20.9%) -- possible 5HKO
0 Atk Astrolotl Fire Lash vs. -6 0 HP / 4 Def Noivern: 220-260 (70.7 - 83.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Noivern U-turn vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Astrolotl: 24-29 (6.4 - 7.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Magnezone @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 112 HP / 248 Def / 148 SpA
Bold Nature
- Iron Defense
- Thunderbolt
- Body Press
- Magnet Rise

Iron Defense Magnezone functions as a Counter to Venomicon-Epilogue. Magnezone having an immunity to Gunk Shot and a double resistance to Flying means that its one of the few Pokemon in the game, and basically the only viable on at the moment, that is able to essentially bypass Venomicon-Epilogue's Tinted Lens. The given ev spread allows Magnezone to always avoid a 2HKO from +2 Brave Bird after Leftovers recovery while being able to OHKO Venomicon-Epilogue back with Thunderbolt. You could also do 160 HP / 252 Def / 96 SpA if you wanted to accomplish something similar while holding some other item like Rocky Helmet as that also avoids the 2HKO, although it does miss out on the chance for Thunder to always OHKO (It still has a 75% OHKO chance though which is pretty good).

Calcs:

+2 252 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 112 HP / 248+ Def Magnezone: 136-162 (44 - 52.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
148 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 8 HP / 0 SpD Venomicon-Epilogue: 314-372 (100.3 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 160 HP / 252+ Def Magnezone: 136-160 (42.3 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
96 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 8 HP / 0 SpD Venomicon-Epilogue: 302-356 (96.4 - 113.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Zeraora @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Volt Switch
- Play Rough/Bulk Up/Knock Off
- Close Combat/Drain Punch

This is a Check to Venomicon-Epilogue. Plasma Fists always ohkos Venomicon-E, and Volt Switch does a minimum of half. Zeraora can just barely switch into Venomicon's Brave Bird or Gunk Shot, but with a Swords Dance boost it can't, and a Gunk Shot poison would kill Zeraora right away. Zeraora also always outspeeds Venomicon-E. The other moves are all just coverage and things to be viable in general against other Pokemon, and the item is just what is best in general since there is not really an item that helps Zeraora's matchup against Venomicon-E.

252 Atk Zeraora Plasma Fists vs. 8 HP / 0 Def Venomicon-Epilogue: 338-398 (107.9 - 127.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
248 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zeraora: 264-312 (83.2 - 98.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0- SpA Zeraora Volt Switch vs. 8 HP / 0 SpD Venomicon-Epilogue: 158-188 (50.4 - 60%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 248 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zeraora: 528-622 (166.5 - 196.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Melmetal @ Protective Pads / Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Adamant Nature
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 88 HP / 228 Atk / 80 SpD / 112 Spe
- Double Iron Bash
- Superpower
- Thunder Punch
- Thunder Wave

Melmetal is a check. This set's a variation of the 3 Attacks + Thunder Wave one that adds more physical bulk at the cost of some Attack. Total SpDef is almost equal to the original sample set, and is reduced so that we can retain as much Attack as possible. Thankfully, Melmetal still hits quite hard even with the cut to Attack.

The additional bulk means you can switch into Jolly EBook even with 2 layers of Spikes up and tank the next hit, without needing Leftovers recovery. It also can come in on +2 after a sack or pivot. Bash is always a 2HKO on 8/0 from full. You could definitely go lower since it's rarely at max due to recoil and SR, but Melm wants the high Attack in general so it's not a big deal.

Item slot is customizeable for what your team needs. Helmet can help wear down Venomicon even more if you really want to ruin its day.

248 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Melmetal: 152-180 (35.1 - 41.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after 2 layers of Spikes

+2 248 Atk Vile Vial Tinted Lens Venomicon-Epilogue Brave Bird vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Melmetal: 306-360 (70.6 - 83.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

228+ Atk Iron Fist Melmetal Double Iron Bash (2 hits) vs. 8 HP / 0 Def Venomicon-Epilogue: 314-372 (100.3 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
