I'd say the best way to go about things is maximize his use in one of those roles to its fullest extent. He has a monopoly on being able to choose who he traps (and do damage), even if it's only temporary. Make use of that to the fullest extent as to what your team needs.

This man gets exactly how decidueye is supposed to function. I once saw a comment that suggested Decidueye is Celebi 2.0. No one uses that onion fairy for damage, but rather utility. Same concept here. If you're using Decidueye to sweep, you're doing it wrong.
