THE GONG OF KNOCKOUT
[SET]
name: Three Attacks
move 1: Freeze-Dry
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Ice Beam / Hidden Power Fire
move 4: Roost
item: Never-Melt Ice / Icium Z
ability: Pressure
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Kyurem is nearly impossible to switch into, and this set takes full advantage of its power, coverage, and ability to switch moves to beat would-be checks like Heatran and Melmetal. Freeze-Dry lets Kyurem break through common Water-types like Toxapex, Tapu Fini, Gastrodon, and Rotom-W. Earth Power has great offensive coverage with Kyurem's Ice-type moves, as it hits some of the most common Pokemon that resist Ice like Heatran, Victini, and Magnezone for significant damage. Ice Beam can break through Pokemon which shrug off Freeze-Dry, like Corviknight and Ferrothorn. Roost is necessary to help make up for its weakness to Stealth Rock. A Modest nature is preferred to improve Kyurem's offensive prowess; however, Timid is an option to outspeed Mega Garchomp, offensive Landorus-T, and Modest Zapdos. Never-Melt Ice boosts Kyurem's damage against switch-ins like Clefable and Corviknight and makes it harder for them to check Kyurem. Icium Z is another option that allows Kyurem to break through common checks like Clefable, Reuniclus, and Corviknight, and also free up a moveslot to run Hidden Power Fire to beat Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn. However, Never-Melt Ice is usually preferred since it is more consistent and does not take up the team's Z-move slot.
Kyurem fits best on bulky offense and balance teams that can supply it with the support it needs to function effectively. Defog support is required, as Kyurem is greatly hindered by entry hazards. As such, Defoggers like Corviknight, Gliscor, and Tapu Fini make for good teammates. Pivots like Slowbro, Landorus-T, Tapu Koko, and Mega Lopunny can also help bring Kyurem onto the field safely. The latter three also help lure in Grass-, Ground-, and Flying-types like Serperior, Gliscor, Gastrodon, and Zapdos, which Kyurem can threaten out. Mega Lopunny is one of the best teammates for Kyurem, as Kyurem can easily switch into most of Mega Lopunny's checks while Mega Lopunny can pressure Pokemon that try to revenge kill Kyurem like Greninja, Kartana, and Weavile. Magnezone is a solid partner, as it is able to handle Steel-types that hinder Kyure, like Corviknight, Mega Scizor, and Ferrothorn. Entry hazard support from teammates like Greninja, Heatran, and Landorus-T is greatly appreciated, as it makes it harder for foes to switch into Kyurem's attacks.
