Other 5 Years of National Dex

Welp, I guess its time for me to cut through the unserious one liners and post a semi-sentimental, very much late, personal yap essay. Its been a bit, truly. Ive been around for a while, on and off, coming back after announcing my supposed department for the 2nd time in the span of a month. Anyways, Id like to drop a few lines (more than a few, honestly) of my experience within the tier and it's community as means to commemorate five long years of this trashy hellhole weve all got sucked into, and eventually developed feelings for.

As many others have expressed, I started to get into showdown nearing the end of USUMs life span as current gens OU. I didnt play much, usually just had it as a time killer after getting atrociously bored of the mainline games battle AI being so stupefyingly simple and unengaging most of the time. I played on an off, building a few bad sixes, but never committed. It wasn't until the dexcut was announced that turned what was once a small slow burning flame into a rapidly spreading hellish bonfire. With this, I turned to USUM as a means to cope. I discovered samples, the chatrooms (as I was on mobile I didnt know about them), and metagames as a whole.

A few months later, an announcement was made, the introduction of a new tier focused on bringing the dexited mons back into the game along with the previous gen mechanics. I felt inspired, it was just what I needed! And I proceeded to not play a single game of NatDex (Beta), and totally dip. Some time later with the beginning of Covid, when we the world had no other option but to cave into itself for its own good, I joined. I played my fair bit of games, around the time The Big 5 were still running around rampant. I spent about a solid 20% of my time being a hardstuck 1500s ladder goon, and another solid 80% lurking in the chatroom.

School moved to online, and with more than enough time in my hands, I decided I should start mingling with a few regs from around the time. Notably, Sam Sand Man (the GOAT) stood out from the rest of the bunch. For starters, he regularly started pming me throughout the day with random pastes of ideas and... "cooks". With him, and along with other people (some of which are still around, others, well, banned), we established a few side communities for us to mess around in. Building crappy ideas, laddering, beating each other up. Mingling with some of the higher ups, shitting out 5 hard lines of yap justifying or denying any ideas or mons proposed by the other regs, getting shit on by my friends on a daily basis. Gen 8 was the most fun Ive had in any game for any amount of time ever. That was relatively shortlived (3 years), cause of some personal issues I decided it was best to cut myself off from the community for some time to work on myself.

After coming back from my year long break around august, I lurked thru the NatDexcord and ndroom while learning what was what at the moment, trynna get a hang of Tera and its wackyness. I lurked for about a month before I met IRONM0NK3Y808, and later on, boppydop!. After meeting them and messing around, I finally got the courage to take the game seriously, joining a fair share of tours. I even got the chance to play in NDOUFL, my first team tour. I was excited to recognize some faces from my days back in SSND, and some new ones as well whove been very awesome people.

All tho Ive never been more involved in a tier, that enjoyment was also relatively shortlived (but like, actually, like 4 months). Ironm0nk3y dipped, Tera was a hot topic once again after cries for a third suspect, which eventually was conceded. For a whole month the community felt very hostile and uninviting, with people left and right confessing how they dont see Natdex as a serious tier and thus it shouldnt be tiered seriosly. Heated debates on what should and shouldnt be done, where the tier should go, even going as afar as making very harsh accusations towards council. As well as a certain individual singledhandly dipping the quality of the discussion with, quite frankly, very awful takes and with streams of stawmans and adhominems. It felt quite awful. And so, I started exploring other tiers, something I was never willing to do.

So ive been having some pretty decent success down in the fairy old gens, occasionally participating in their teambuilding comps and other such projects. Eventually i got the green light to even revamp ORAS' speed tiers which was honestly a very fun experience. I even got the chance to play in Medieva PL, which on one hand i dont think i should be in bcuz im honestly not good enough, but on the other hand, its really pushing me to give it my best. In the end, it was a wild ride. I dont have a single regret, well, not joining tours back then. But regardless, I had mountains of fun, but after the banning of Tera, Ive grown cold towards the tier as a whole. Ironic, but what can I do about it. Im more than happy that the ban has sparked so much activity tho, and has reignited a passion for others. But unfortunately, I cant say the same for myself.

But yeah, its been fun. I bid yall adieu. It was fun. Great to come back to seeing Lupla (bye bye, hmph), Ganjafin and Sam Sand Man, meeting ironm0nk3y and boppydop! (medasus, spookycooke, ineros, runicpower419, chilidewd, sh0shin, and wildfree as well.) If yall wanna reach out, ill be hanging around ORAS stuff.
5 years and ur still bad

we seriously, don’t care :/.

I'll never forget the days of Covid playing in the roomtours all day against great players and getting better together. A lot of the people I played are still doing well in both official tours and nd tours and I'm very happy for them.

Shoutout to the krooks for being super inviting and adding me on your cpl team even though I'd never played in a tour on smogon. I was a ladder/roomtour player but the fact that astralidya and Avery (rip) and idk possibly others thought that I was good enough for actual tours was a huge confidence boost and eye opener. My response when Avery pmed me on showdown saying they wanted me on their cpl team was something like "idk what that means idk what a smogon tournament is," and I've come so far since then. Unfortunately half the people in that server are banned but the other half is super cool and are good people.

ssndou is the best mickey mouse tier in pokemon history and if you disagree it's okay to be wrong, we wouldn't have correct opinions if there were no incorrect opinions. Seeing the number of people participating in suspect tests and tours in svndou is incredibly satisfying for me to see after coming back from a few years of being pretty inactive. I think it's safe to say natdex is the most official/active of the unofficial mickey mouse tiers which is pretty damn cool. Looking forward to another strong 5 years

Saw some people put their throwback replays/teams and this is the first one I built that was good and I spammed this shit so much in dragapult meta

I've been gone for a pretty good while now, but honestly playing ND during mid 2024 was probably one of my favorite experiences ever. Being just a general room troll and shitmon advocate as well as being able to use my proficiency for debate was honestly awesome. It's honestly sick to see that I did make an impact on the few people who I did become friends with over that period of time (looking at you sluGGy , my goat) and although I know that my presence was probably considered dubious by many in the ND room at the time, it was fun being able to chill with a bunch of chill guys regardless. It's also really cool to see some of my teams get usage (even if it's not the best outcome due to being partially outdated) in tournaments even after I'm gone, so thanks sh0shin

I doubt many people really care by now, but if anyone is wondering what I've been up to since quitting mons- I've been focusing a lot more on my martial arts and am hoping to be able to go pro in the future, I've joined college after being out of education for a year and a half where I am now a member of the student council, and I've been absolutely killing my studies with grade 8s (american equivalent of A+) in every mock exam in every subject so far. Although it's sad that I couldn't play for NDFL or participate in the post-tera ban metagame, quitting was definitely the right decision as I've been completely pressed for time.

Even though my time in the ND community was relatively short lived (about 6-8 months), I can't emphasise how much I appreciate everyone who I spoke to back then - as someone who struggles to make friends due to autism, you guys made me feel like I belonged somewhere. Quick rapid fire of thank yous to everyone I was friends with! boppydop! sluGGy Ineros Chilli Dewd RunicPower413 Dead by Daylight Medasus Flames Of Elixir birqzz Lupla Spookcooke

I'm sure there are plenty more that I'm forgetting, but it's been a while. I never really made a "goodbye" post, so take this as my very delayed thank you and goodbye to the ND community. Love you guys.

Dw you'll be back in a while :3 no one ever leaves

I joined PS! in 2020. And my first ever played format was Gen 8 National Dex. At that time, I knew nothing of teambuilding, and till today, National Dex has left an impression on my heart. My peak ladder rating in Gen 9 National Dex was 1910 around June-July, and I have considered that as a big accomplishment by me. I loved the fact that you can use Megas, Z-moves and terastallization all in one team. But now, I am rather deviating from National Dex since my favourite gimmick, Terastallization, got banned from SV NDOU recently. I am hoping that tera comes back soon to Nat Dex, so that I can start playing it as a mainer again. Nevertheless, a very big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to National Dex!

Quite late but doing this as my special 100th Post!

I started to play NatDex around the April-May period of 2024. At the time, I knew very little about teambuilding and competitive play. NatDex now has a made itself a soft spot in my heart. My first and oldest memories were Oculars Helping me in Teambuilding. I ultimately took him as my mentor and learnt a lot from him. I later met with many other people who helped me improve quite a lot specifically Lupla (my goat) Solaros & Lunaris and Ineros. As I kept improving, I got the motivation to sign up for tours and did quite well in them. I then started getting into the NatDex Other Tiers mainly, which was extremely fun in exploring all the new tiers. As time passed by, I made progress into what I am now, and met many new people and made a ton of friends. From what I see myself now, I've grown a lot as a competitive player, and this couldn't have happened due to my hardwork, and the help from my close friends.

As per now, National Dex as a whole has grown a lot, in just a period of 6-7 months. I've been loving this tier from the start, and will continue to do so. With that, I wish National Dex a very Happy Birthday and wish that this tier will turn into a bigger and more serious tier in the years coming by.

These were people with who's time I deeply cherish. I may have not mentioned a few since I wrote this on top of my head.

Have been procrastinating making a post here for way too long, but finally got to it. There is honestly too much that i'd like to talk about but i want to keep this post relatively short

I played natdex and was part of its community for 4 years, maybe spent a bit too much of my free time on this website lol but honestly i don't regret it. It's not just about the game - which by the way i think is absolutely amazing, even though it is easy to trash on it cuz Oh No RNG, Oh No Matchups, Oh No The 70% Accurate Move Misses 30% Of The Time - but also meeting people coming from all walks of life, not only with their own way to look at the game of course but also at life in general. After all, anyone you meet knows things you don’t, has seen things you haven’t, and has thought of ideas that never crossed your mind. Of course this is not to say people don't do really dumb things on a regular basis - everyone does, personally i'm quite good at being a moron - however i do think sometimes we humans get caught up in our own opinions and don't take the time to understand each other. Critical thinking is also about considering the possibility that something that seems dumb at first might actually make sense!

Natdex was also the place where i got the opportunity to spend time with a ton of truly amazing people, and i wanted to say i am truly grateful for all the memories i made during this time, whether we just played/built, contributed to natdex/ndots or just shitposted together, or whatever else i'm forgetting. Everything didn't always go super smoothly, and i'm not leaving without regrets (like for things i think i could have handled better during my time as a leader) but even the bad times were part of the whole adventure, you see what i mean?
I'm not brave enough to make a shoutouts - and honestly there is just way too much people that would deserve a shoutout here - but i do think that at least some of the folks will recognise themselves, maybe even the ones i lost touch with.

If anyone out there is wondering, i've been doing great. Retiring was great for my mental health not only because i really wanted to do New Things but also since i slowly started to burn out from staffing/contributing here - even though being so invested until then was a very fulfilling hobby - and it became more a source of stress than anything else, and the n°1 rule of contributing in my opinion is that if it's not fun for you anymore it's probably time to quit - we are here to have a good time anyway aren't we?
I'm still a student in mathematics, and with my newfound free time i invested myself more in one of my favourite antics being getting into random stuff, currently being japanese cuisine (you might have to be stuck in the kitchen for 3 hours to make miso ramen but i tell you it's SO worth it) and improv theatre. I also got more time to compose music although finding inspiration can be challenging sometimes xd. I actually still play mons a little bit though (part because modern gen 2 is the best metagame of all times) but i don't think i'll ever be as invested in mons again as i was during my natdex era.

Anyway, thank you for everything, it has been a blast. Belated happy new year, lot of love NatDex :)
