Gen 3 ADV OU Charizard Rewrite [QC 2/2] [GP 0/2]

:Charizard:
[OVERVIEW]

Charizard has firmly established its role in the ADV OU metagame as a strong mixed attacker. Long gone are the days where its only seen as a gimmick belly drum or sunny day sweeper. It plays a pivotal role on many of the best mixed offense structures in the current meta of ADV. Charizard threatens some of most important defensive walls in ADV in Skarmory, Blissey and Swampert with its strong fire stab and options like focus punch, beat up and hidden power grass. It also fills an important role as a Metagross switch in, forcing switches and making progress with its powerful attacks.

Set Description
=========

The Mixed Attacker Charizard set is able to threaten most of the tier with its good coverage. Getting the most out of Charizard typically involves using it to pivot into Pokemon such as Skarmory or Metagross and taking advantage of the switches it forces. As a Skarmory switch in, it has an important job of limiting the amount of spikes Skarmory can put down by scaring it out. This is especially important on many of the spin-less mixed offense teams Charizard often finds itself on. Its a wallbreaker that ideally likes to lure in and remove blissey for its teammates with focus punch or beat up. Beat up is a large part of Charizards success since jumping up to OU, it allows Charizard to threaten a 2HKO on Blissey. Making it much less reliant on prediction or having a sub up as focus punch does. Beat up sets opt for a Timid or Modest nature since beat up only takes in account the base attack stat and isn't affected by a minus attack nature.
It serves as an excellent check to many threats such as the calm mind Jirachi and Celebi sets as well as Metagross. Tyranitar while having a fire resistance and bulk to tank hidden power grass must also be wary of focus punch and isnt a great check to the non beat up variants.
As an option,16 atk EVs on Focus Punch sets allow you to OHKO Tyranitar after 1 spike everytime.
Flamethrower and dragon claw are common options on Charizard. Dragon claw is most often found on sets along with Beat up as an option to hit Salamence and Flygon which are sometimes used to pivot into Charizards strong attacks. It can run a few different natures. Notably it has a good base 100 speed stat which is crucial in the adv metagame tying with common pokemon such as Zapdos, Salamence and Jirachi. Faster Celebi sets often run hidden power fire meaning Charizard is typically faster due to the lowered speed IV Celebi has. Charizard often likes switching into attacks from Metagross and Celebi or bringing its own health down with substitute to get into range of blaze. Blaze can be used to trade with an opposing Gengar as well since Charizard can enter on will o wisp and is typically slower meaning Gengars thunderbolt will put you in blaze and Fireblast will OHKO in return with the boost. Blaze allows Charizard to do some ridiculous things such as nab a 2HKO on the Majority of Salamence sets. This is very notable because Salamence is often used to pivot into Charizard in a check by committee approach or outright if it carries hydro pump or rock slide.

Team Options
========

Charizard is now a staple Pokemon on mixed offense teams notably taking the role that mixed Salamence used to fill on the old mixed offense structures. Charizard, unlike Salamence or Moltres, can threaten the very common core of Skarmory and Blissey without the need of spikes. Similar to Salamence however, it pairs nicely with Pokemon such as Snorlax, Metagross, Suicune, Tyranitar, Celebi and even Salamence itself amongst many others. Charizard is a key contributor to this style of team because its teammates lure in and break down Skarmory. Charizard uses Skarmory as entry to break down the other opposing Pokemon. This is key to the beat down approach of mixed offenses. Tyranitar is an important partner for Charizard because its sand allows damage to stick on its common pivots. Dragon Dance Tyranitar sets can force damage on bulky waters than pivot into Charizard. Often Charizard Teams will double up on rock resists to account for its 4x weakness. Pokemon like Metagross, Swampert and Jirachi are common alongside Charizard. Some rarer but good options for additional rock resists with Charizard are Breloom and Flygon. Charizard can come into will o wisp or Ice Punch aimed at them. Snorlax can come in on and check water types that may give Charizard difficulty such as Suicune, Starmie or Milotic. Likewise Charizard comes in on two of the most common snorlax switch ins Skarmory and Metagross. Offensive and rest Suicune is also very common alongside Charizard because it can check Salamence's trying to pivot into Charizard and in DD Salamence’s case use Charizard as a set up opportunity. Rest variants of Suicune also deal with the defensive waters that shut down Charizard. Pursuit users pair well with Charizard. Charizard is a very good at luring in Aerodactyl and Starmie reliably chipping them. Pursuit Tyranitar can come in on moves aimed at Charizard such as double edge and thunder wave and then trap them.

Charizard is not seen exclusively on mixed offense although that is its bread and butter, It's also a very strong option on spikes and calm mind pass teams. Typically those that lean toward a faster pace and are more offensive in nature. Charizard still does its break Skarmory, Blissey, Swampert role on these teams however with spike support or a calm mind boost it can even pressure some of the bulkier waters on switch in. Due to how threatening Charizard is once its in, it forces a lot of defensive pivots racking up spike chip damage. Teammates on these structures can include Skarmory or Cloyster typically as the spiker, calm mind Blissey for Suicune help or electric types such as Zapdos or Jolteon, Tyranitar for sand but also to help break Charizard's checks and other various Pokemon like Swampert, Metagross, Gengar, Aerodactyl, Celebi and Jirachi. On calm mind pass Charizard is one of the most dangerous boost recipients in the metagame and is a staple on such teams. Celebi makes a great partner for Charizard as it can use the water types that switch into Charizard as a set up opportunity. Calm mind pass with Charizard can sometimes be sandless though the majority of Charizard teams will have Tyranitar.

Other Options
=============

Flamethrower, Hidden power ice, toxic and brick break are rare options sometimes used on Charizard. Flamethrower can be used as a more accurate albeit weaker alternative to fire blast. However using flamethrower will miss out on one hit Kos on Skarmory and Metagross and Charizard wont be able to trade with Pokemon like Gengar and Zapdos as easily. Hidden power ice is used because of how often Charizard lures Pokemon like Salamence and Flygon nabbing a OHKO or putting them at very low health. Toxic can be used to punish potential pivoting around Charizard's coverage. Brick break is seen sometimes alongside beat up as a way to also threaten Tyranitar more and have a move that deals decent damage to Blissey if your team isn't healthy and beat up is weakened. Sunny day sets with Petaya Berry is a niche choice you can use on Charizard. A Fire blast or Blast Burn boosted by Sun, Blaze and a Petaya berry can allow charizard to force through even its toughest checks like Milotic.
Belly Drum is also a rarely seen option on Charizard in the current meta mostly regarded as a gimmick set from the past. The lack of quality coverage alongside belly drum and the inconsistency of setting it up to sweep being the main reasons for its scarcity. Dragon Dance is an option on Charizard sets alongside Brick break to pressure Tyranitar and Blissey.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water Types**: Bulky water types especially those with recovery such as Milotic and Starmie are very strong answers to Charizard. Shrugging off its attacks and threatening it back with stab water moves. Milotic in particular is essentially Charizard’s worst nightmare with its tremendous bulk even when paired with spikes Charizard will have a hard time getting through it without a critical hit. Other waters such as Suicune can use Charizard as a set up opportunity and force it out. Even Swampert, if at high enough health to live a hidden power grass can be very threatening to Charizard retaliating with a likely torrent boosted water move.

**Rock Types**: Tyranitar, particularly pursuit sets can pose a major problem for Charizards without fighting coverage. Hidden power grass is at best a 3HKO and its often best to switch out of Tyranitar resulting in Charizard getting pursuit trapped. Aerodactyl likewise resists Charizard's main stab move and can take any of its common coverage moves decently well. Aerodactyl threatens to absolutely destroy charizard making it very easy to click moves such as double edge to break Charizard's teammates.

**Salamence & Gyarados**: Salamence resits Charizard's main stab move and its common fighting and grass coverage so is often used to pivot into Charizard and check it short term. Threatening to OHKO Charizard with options like rock slide and hydro pump. Although Salamence must be weary of dragon claw or hidden power ice. Gyarados, albeit more rare, is also a very good Charizard check resisting or neutral to all its common attacks only fearing the rare toxic and uses Charizard as setup opportunity.

**Zapdos & Moltres**: Zapdos can switch into Charizard and force it out. Since they are tied in base speed and Zapdos Threatens to OHKO with thunderbolt the interaction is not in Charizard's favor, however it can force through Zapdos over time, even bulkier sets. Moltres resists Charizards fire stab and common coverage like hidden power grass. Charizard has to be weary of using its Fire blasts to break through both birds because due to their Pressure ability and chance to miss you can quickly run out of pp.

**Flygon**: Flygon is sometimes used to pivot into Charizard because it resists its stab fire moves and is neutral to hidden power grass. It must however be careful of dragon claw and hidden power ice from Charizard. Flygon can threaten Charizard with moves like rock slide which is a roll to OHKO or toxic which weakens Charizard's beat up.

While not conventionally thought of as a Zard check, I would mention Flygon as it is often the best way some teams stopgap Zard. Could also mention Moltres in the same vain for Checks and Counters. I am not sure whether or not I would divide Zard in 2 sets instead (SubPunch and Beat Up) since I feel they play quite differently and some options you see on Beat Up are not seen at all on SubPunch (Toxic, Dclaw, Brick Break). I would maybe put higher emphasis on Zard Spikes than currently but tbh its good enough the way it is. I like the analysis

We have pretty thoroughly discussed this analysis in the C&C Discord and Zpanther has added a lot from the notes that were made there already. I think this analysis now is in a pretty decent spot, but I will add in a couple other small notes.

I'd still like to see some clean up/additions/possible restructuring in the Team Options section. I'd likely start with stressing the importance of Tyranitar alongside Charizard. Sandless Charizard is quite rare because if you're using it on spikeless (which you pretty often are) you want any damage to stick to whatever sand-immune mons that are checking it or pivoting against it. Beyond that, and perhaps near as importantly, Tar has sets that assist in chipping or removing Zard's checks. Pursuit can chip or remove opposing Aerodactyl, Starmie, and Zapdos. Dragon Dance can force damage onto bulky waters. The one common Charizard team that is sometimes sandless is on Calm Mind pass teams which is sorely lacking in mention currently. Zard is one of the most dangerous CM receivers in the metagame and has reached staple status on such teams. Celebi in general is not mentioned as a potential partner, despite being a very common one as Celebi switches into water and electric type attacks aimed at Zard and continues an offensive gameplan. I'd like to see some stressing of the importance of strong rock resists (perhaps even suggestion of doubling up on resists) with Zard as Tar/Aero are such common pivots. Metagross, Swampert, Jirachi, Claydol, and Breloom are all very strong Zard partners because they help shore up against rock types defensively and continue the offensive pressure. You could also even give a special mention to Flygon as Charizard can pivot into Skarmory and Gengar that check Flygon and use them as opportunity for breaking. Zard being a switch in to Metagross is also something Flygon appreciates.

I think there should be mention of Flamethrower as an option, just be sure to mention what the lack of power means (less breaking power, missing out on OHKOs vs Skarm/Meta, etc).
Toxic is seen alongside hidden power ice as a way to pressure the waters that switch into Charizard particularly Swampert which would otherwise be a pretty great switch into Charizard lacking hidden power grass
I'd probably just change this to say Toxic can be used as a way to punish potential attempted pivoting around Zard's coverage.

I like what Shitrock enjoyer said about mentioning Moltres/Flygon in checks/counters and Zapdos could probably be added to that as well. All 3 are mons that Zard can potentially overwhelm, but Zard has to be weary of in the short term or as pivots.

[OVERVIEW]

Charizard has firmly established its role in the ADV OU metagame as a strong mixed attacker. Long gone are the days where its only seen as a gimmick belly drum or sunny day sweeper. It plays a pivotal role on many of the best mixed offense structures in the current meta metagame of ADV. Charizard threatens some of most important defensive walls in ADV in Skarmory, Blissey, (AC) and Swampert with its strong fire Fire-type moves STAB and options like Focus Punch, Beat Up, (AC) and Hidden Power Grass. It also fills an important role as a Metagross switch in switch-in, forcing switches and making progress with its powerful attacks.

Set Description
=========

The Mixed Attacker Charizard This set is able to threaten most of the tier with its good coverage. Getting the most out of Charizard typically involves using it to pivot into Pokemon such as Skarmory or and Metagross and taking advantage of the switches it Charizard forces. As a Skarmory switch in switch-in, it has an important job of limiting the amount number of Spikes layers Skarmory can put down by scaring it out. This is especially important on many of the spin-less Rapid Spin-less mixed offense teams Charizard often finds itself on. Its It's a wallbreaker that ideally likes to lure in and remove blissey Blissey for its teammates with focus Focus Punch or beat up. Beat up is has been a large part of Charizards Charizard's success since jumping up to OU, as it allows Charizard to threaten a 2HKO on Blissey (RP), (AC) Making making it much less reliant on prediction or having a sub Substitute up as focus Focus Punch does. Beat up sets opt for a Timid or Modest nature, (AC) since beat up only takes in account the base attack Attack stat and isn't affected by a minus attack an Attack-reducing nature. It don't keep this on a new line Charizard serves as an excellent check to many threats such as the Calm Mind Jirachi and Celebi sets as well as Metagross. Tyranitar, (AC) while having a Fire resistance and the bulk to tank hidden Hidden Power Grass, (AC) must also be wary of Focus Punch and isnt isn't a great check to the non beat up non-Beat Up Charizard variants. As an remove new line An alternate spread with option (RC) 16 atk Attack EVs on Focus Punch sets allow you Charizard to always OHKO Tyranitar after 1 spike everytime one layer of Spikes. remove new line Flamethrower and dragon Dragon Claw are common options on Charizard (RP); (ASC) Dragon claw is most often found on sets along with Beat up as an option to hit Salamence and Flygon, (AC) which are sometimes used to pivot into Charizards Charizard's strong attacks. It Charizard can run a few different natures (RP); (ASC) notably, (AC) it has a good base 100 speed Speed stat, (AC) which is crucial in the ADV metagame, (AC) as it lets Charizard speed tie tying with common Pokemon such as Zapdos, Salamence, (AC) and Jirachi. Faster Celebi sets often run hidden Hidden Power Fire, (AC) meaning Charizard is typically faster due to the lowered speed Speed IV Celebi has. Charizard often likes switching into attacks from Metagross and Celebi or bringing its own health down with substitute Substitute to get into Blaze range of blaze. Blaze. (AP) Charizard can be used to also trade with an opposing Gengar, (AC) as well since Charizard can enter on will o wisp switch into Will-O-Wisp and is typically slower, (AC) meaning Gengars Gengar's thunderbolt will put you Charizard in blaze Blaze range, (AC) and Fireblast Fire Blast will OHKO Gengar in return with the boost. Blaze also allows Charizard to do pull some ridiculous things feats such as nab a 2HKO on the Majority majority of Salamence sets. This is very notable because Salamence is often used to pivot into Charizard in a check by committee approach or outright if it carries hydro Hydro Pump or Rock Slide.

Team Options
========

Charizard is now a staple Pokemon on mixed offense teams, (AC) notably taking the role that mixed Salamence used to fill on the old mixed offense structures. Charizard, unlike Salamence or Moltres, can threaten the very common core of Skarmory and Blissey without the need of spikes Spikes. Similar to Salamence, (AC) however, it pairs nicely with Pokemon such as Snorlax, Metagross, Suicune, Tyranitar, Celebi, (AC) and even Salamence itself, (AC) among amongst many others. Charizard is a key contributor to this style of team mixed offense because its teammates lure in and break down Skarmory. Charizard uses Skarmory as entry to break down the other opposing Pokemon (RP); (ASC) this is key to the beat down approach of mixed offenses. Tyranitar is an important partner for Charizard because its sand allows damage to stick on its Charizard's common pivots. Dragon Dance Tyranitar sets can force damage on bulky waters Water-types than pivot into Charizard. Often Charizard teams often will double up on rock resists Rock-resistant foes to account for its 4x weakness (RP); (ASC) Pokemon like Metagross, Swampert, (AC) and Jirachi are common alongside Charizard. Some rarer but good options for additional rock resists with Charizard Rock-resistant teammates are Breloom and Flygon (RP), (AC) and Charizard can come into will o wisp Will-O-Wisp or Ice Punch aimed at them. Snorlax can come in on and check water types Water-types that may give Charizard difficulty such as Suicune, Starmie, (AC) and or Milotic. Likewise, (AC) Charizard comes in on two of the most common snorlax Snorlax switch-ins switch ins Skarmory and Metagross. Offensive and rest or Rest Suicune is also very common alongside Charizard because it can check Salamence's Salamence trying to pivot into Charizard, (AC) and in DD Salamence’s Dragon Dance Salamence's I swapped this because the apostrophe was curly case, (AC) it can use Charizard as a set up setup opportunity. Rest variants of Suicune also deal with the defensive waters Water-types that shut down Charizard. Pursuit users pair well with Charizard (RP) Charizard, (AC) since it is a very good at luring in Aerodactyl and Starmie reliably chipping them. Pursuit Tyranitar can then come in on moves aimed at Charizard such as double edge Double-Edge and Thunder Wave and then trap them these foes.

Charizard is not seen exclusively on mixed offense, (AC) although that is its bread and butter (RC). (AP) It's also a very strong option on spikes Spikes and calm Calm mind Mind pass teams. Typically, (AC) teams those that lean toward a faster pace and are more offensive in nature. <-- this line seems useless Charizard still does its break Skarmory, Blissey, or Swampert role on these teams; (ASC) however, (AC) with spike Spikes support or a calm Calm Mind boost, (AC) it can even pressure some of the bulkier waters Water-types on the switch in. Due to how threatening Charizard is once its it's in, it forces a lot of defensive pivots racking to rack up spike Spikes chip damage. Teammates on these structures can include Skarmory or Cloyster typically as the spiker (RC) Spiker; (ASC) calm Calm Mind Blissey for Suicune help; (ASC) Electric-types or electric types such as Zapdos or and Jolteon (RC); (ASC) and Tyranitar for sand but also and to help break Charizard's checks and other various Pokemon like Swampert, Metagross, Gengar, Aerodactyl, Celebi, (AC) and Jirachi <- are these meant to be the Charizard checks? if so, you could remove the "Charizard checks and other various" to just compress. On calm Calm Mind pass teams, (AC) Charizard is one of the most dangerous boost recipients in the metagame and is a staple on such teams. Celebi makes a great partner for Charizard, (AC) as it can use the water types Water-types that switch into Charizard as a set up setup opportunity. Calm mind Mind pass with Charizard can sometimes be sandless sand-less, (AC) though the majority of Charizard teams will have Tyranitar.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Flamethrower, Hidden power Power Ice, toxic Toxic and brick Brick Break are rare options sometimes used on Charizard. Flamethrower can be used as a more accurate albeit weaker alternative to fire blast. However, (AC) using flamethrower will miss out on one hit Kos on OHKOing Skarmory and Metagross, (AC) and Charizard wont won't be able to trade with Pokemon like Gengar and Zapdos as easily. Hidden Power Ice is used because of how often Charizard lures Pokemon like Salamence and Flygon, (AC) nabbing a OHKO or putting them at very low health. Toxic can be used to punish potential pivoting around Charizard's coverage. Brick break is seen sometimes alongside beat Beat Up as a way to also threaten Tyranitar more and have a move that deals decent damage to Blissey if your team isn't healthy and Beat Up is weakened. A Sunny day Day + sets with Petaya Berry set is a niche choice you can use on Charizard (RP); (ASC) a Fire blast or Blast Burn boosted by Sun, Blaze, (AC) and a Petaya berry can allow charizard Charizard to force through even its toughest checks like Milotic. remove new line Belly Drum is also a rarely seen rarely-seen option on Charizard in the current meta metagame, (AC) mostly regarded as a gimmick set from the past (RP) The— (ASC) this will turn into — later but make sure no space before and after the lack of quality coverage alongside belly Belly drum Drum and the inconsistency of setting it up to sweep being the main reasons for its scarcity. Dragon Dance is an option on Charizard sets alongside Brick break Break to pressure Tyranitar and Blissey.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water Types Water-types**: Bulky water types Water-types, (AC) especially those with recovery such as Milotic and Starmie, (AC) are very strong answers to Charizard (RP) Shrugging, (AC) as they shrug off its attacks and threatening it back with stab water Water-type moves. Milotic in particular is essentially Charizard’s Charizard's replaced curly apostrophe worst nightmare; (ASC) with its Milotic's tremendous bulk even when paired pressured with spikes Spikes, (AC) Charizard will have a hard time getting through it without a critical hit. Other waters Water-types such as Suicune can use Charizard as a set up setup opportunity and force it out. Even Swampert, if If at high enough health to live survive a hidden Hidden Power Grass, (AC) even Swampert can be very threatening to Charizard, (AC) retaliating with a likely torrent boosted water Torrent-boosted Water-type move.

**Rock TypesRock-types**: Tyranitar, particularly Pursuit sets, (AC) can pose a major problem for Charizards Charizard without fighting Fighting-type coverage. Hidden power Power Grass is at best a 3HKO, (AC) and its it's often best to switch out of Tyranitar, (AC) resulting in Charizard getting pursuit Pursuit trapped. Aerodactyl likewise resists Charizard's main STAB move and can take any of its common coverage moves decently well. Aerodactyl also threatens to absolutely destroy charizard Charizard, (AC) making it very easy to click use moves such as double edge Double-Edge to break Charizard's teammates.

**Salamence & and Gyarados**: Salamence resits resists Charizard's main STAB move and its common fighting Fighting and grass Grass coverage, (AC) so it is often used to pivot into Charizard and check it short term. Threatening short-term and threaten to OHKO Charizard it with options like Rock Slide and Hydro Pump. Although Though, (AC) Salamence must be weary wary of dragon Dragon Claw or Hidden Power Ice. Gyarados, albeit more rare rarer, is also a very good Charizard check and uses it as a setup opportunity, (AC) resisting or taking neutral to damage from all its common attacks and only fearing the rare Toxic and uses Charizard as setup opportunity.

**Zapdos & and Moltres**: Zapdos can switch into Charizard and force it out. Since they are tied in base Speed and Zapdos Threatens to OHKO with thunderbolt Thunderbolt, (AC) the interaction is not in Charizard's favor (RC); (ASC) however, (AC) it can force through Zapdos over time, even bulkier Zapdos sets. Moltres resists Charizards fire Charizard's Fire-type moves STAB and common coverage like Hidden Power Grass. Charizard has to be weary wary of using its Fire blasts Blast to break through both birds because it can quickly run out of PP due to their Pressure ability and chance to miss you can quickly run out of pp.

**Flygon**: Flygon is sometimes used to pivot into Charizard because it resists its stab fire Fire-type moves and is neutral to Hidden Power Grass. It must however be careful of Dragon Claw and Hidden Power Ice from Charizard. Flygon can threaten Charizard with moves like Rock Slide, (AC) which is a roll to OHKO, (AC) or Toxic, (AC) which weakens Charizard's Beat Up.
