Substitute + Toxic Aegislash is one of the primary defensive Pokemon on Steel teams thanks to its fantastic defensive typing providing an immunity to Fighting and good bulk in its Shield forme. Shadow Ball is useful for wearing down various foes such as Slowking, Tapu Lele, and Jirachi. Toxic puts many of Aegislash's checks, such as Mandibuzz and Porygon2, on a timer. Substitute lets Aegislash stall out Toxic turns more easily, while setting up in front of foes like Tapu Lele and Mantine. King's Shield lets Aegislash scout the foe's moves, gain Leftovers recovery, stall out Toxic turns, and weaken contact moves from physical attackers like Zeraora and Weavile. Aegislash takes part of a renowned immunity core along with Heatran and Celesteela, Corviknight, or Skarmory, as they can cover each others's weaknesses. Bisharp takes on troublesome Ghost-types for Aegislash, such as Gengar and Dragapult. Ferrothorn is a useful defensive partner to check threatening Water- and Electric-types like Kingdra and Tapu Koko. Entry hazard setters such as Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory also appreciate Aegislash's ability to spinblock.
