[OVERVIEW]

Altaria is a solid pick on bulkier builds as a defensive Defogger and check to powerful threats such as Eelektross, Swanna, and Lilligant thanks to its good bulk, access to Roost, and Dragon / Flying typing. Altaria's also more durable than other entry hazard removers such as Silvally-Dragon, and its typing makes it immune to Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. Altaria also has Natural Cure, letting it act as a status sponge for its team and giving it an edge when facing other defensive Toxic users such as Regirock. However, Altaria is rather passive, inviting many wallbreakers such as Aggron and Stoutland in for free. Its overreliance on Toxic leaves it helpless against Pokemon such as Skuntank and Clefairy, and Taunt and Substitute users such as Oricorio-G and Alolan Sandslash can turn it into setup bait. Some teams may also prefer other hazard removers such as Hitmonchan and Skuntank their lesser passivity, ability to check faster foes with priority moves and Speed investment, and ability to check Pokemon such as Aurorus and Clefairy. Altaria's Stealth Rock weakness makes it easier to overwhelm when it's checking powerful wallbreakers such as Primeape and makes its job as a remover harder when it's switching into Stealth Rock. Altaria's 4x weakness to Ice leaves it helpless against many Ice-types such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Jynx, as well as foes that may carry Ice-type coverage such as Poliwrath and Mesprit. Additionally, Altaria fares poorly against certain hazard setters such as Clefairy, Aggron, and Froslass due to either being unable to touch them or being threatened out by their attacks. However, despite its shortcomings, Altaria's defensive utility and access to Defog are great strengths for bulkier teams looking to include it.

Moves
========

Defog lets Altaria support its team by removing entry hazards, and Altaria is a notably good user of the move thanks to its ability to switch into certain hazard setters such as Mesprit and Weezing. Toxic allows Altaria to chip away at bulkier foes such as Eelektross and Mesprit without relying on its mediocre offensive stats. It also puts a timer on attackers and sweepers such as Carracosta and Scyther. Dragon Pulse prevents Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Haunter from freely using Taunt and Substitute against Altaria while also helping to rack up chip damage overall. Roost keeps Altaria healthy, allowing it to remove hazards and check Pokemon such as Lilligant more comfortably throughout the game.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread with a Calm nature maximizes Altaria's special bulk, allowing it to comfortably wall threats such as Lilligant. 96 EVs are invested in Speed to outspeed Modest Jellicent, letting Altaria use Roost before it takes an attack. Leftovers grants Altaria passive recovery during the match. Natural Cure relieves Altaria of status, mainly Toxic poison, upon switching out, which improves its matchup against opposing bulky Toxic users such as Regirock. It also helps Altaria check threats such as Lanturn lacking Ice Beam.

Usage Tips
========

Altaria should generally be brought in against foes that it walls, such as Eelektross, and use the forced switch as an opportunity to Defog any entry hazards that are on your side of the field. If there are no hazards to remove or if they are of little concern, Altaria can instead focus on spreading Toxic poison throughout the opposing team to weaken them for late-game. Use Roost whenever Altaria's health begins to dwindle, as it otherwise may not be able to switch into Stealth Rock later in the game to use Defog. It will also have trouble checking threats such as Primeape and Lilligant if it's not at full health. If the opponent has a Pokemon that Altaria invites in for free, such as Aggron or Aurorus, double switching is a smart play, as said Pokemon can wreak havoc once on the field. Thanks to Altaria's Natural Cure and good matchup against certain Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, and Thunder Wave users such as Regirock, Weezing, and Mesprit, Altaria can be used as a status sponge and pivot into said Pokemon for teammates.

Team Options
========

Due to Altaria's passive nature, it usually belongs on bulkier builds such as balance, bulky offense, and stall due to its ability to check otherwise troublesome threats such as Lilligant and Eelektross. Its passive nature also makes it undesirable on offensive or hyper offensive builds, which are often more momentum based. Pokemon susceptible to entry hazard chip damage such as Aurorus and Lanturn appreciate Altaria's Defog support increasing their longevity. The latter has decent defensive synergy with Altaria; Lanturn offers a check to Aurorus, while Altaria beats Eelektross and Grass-types such as Lilligant. Checks to Ice-types such as Froslass and Aurorus are greatly appreciated. Poliwrath and Lanturn can check Ice-types decently if they're wary of Freeze-Dry or secondary STAB attacks from Pokemon such as Abomasnow. They appreciate Altaria removing Spikes and Toxic Spikes in return; Poliwrath can also check Rock-types such as Aggron in exchange. Sturdier defensive answers to Ice-types also include Munchlax, Alolan Sandslash, and Assault Vest Crabominable, with the latter greatly appreciating Altaria's Defog due to its vulnerability to chip damage. Altaria's passiveness often invites many powerful physical attackers such as Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Alolan Sandslash in for little to no cost. Checks to such Pokemon are appreciated. Gurdurr does well at checking all three, as does Poliwrath. More defensive partners such as Sableye and Tangela accomplish a similar role and help whittle down the opposing team with status, Leech Seed, and Knock Off. In return, Altaria checks special attackers such as Swanna and removes Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Altaria likes a teammate to beat Clefairy, as it ignores Altaria's Toxic and Dragon Pulse and can repeatedly set Stealth Rock or set up with Calm Mind. Aggron and Alolan Sandslash beat it quite comfortably and appreciate Altaria's ability to check special attackers. Altaria synergizes well with typical stall picks such as Audino and Pyukumuku, as they appreciate its ability to remove hazards and check threats such as Kangaskhan and Aurorus. Natu or a secondary hazard remover such as Articuno or Skuntank can be used in addition to Altaria on such archetypes to give the team a better matchup against Spikes from the likes of Qwilfish and Froslass, which can otherwise annoy Altaria with Taunt.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A more physically defensive spread can ease Altaria's matchup against certain physical attackers such as Regirock and Primeape, notably allowing it to better switch into, Toxic stall, and remove the hazards of the former. However, this causes special attackers such as offensive Mesprit and +1 Lilligant to pressure Altaria more. Heal Bell is an option on bulkier archetypes that allows Altaria to function as a cleric. Altaria has a hard time finding room for it, though, and Audino already accomplishes the role of a cleric on similar archetypes. Haze and Roar give Altaria the upper hand against certain setup sweepers such as Gurdurr, Lilligant, and Pinsir. The latter is also useful for racking up entry hazard damage and annoying Substitute users. However, even when unboosted, said foes can carry coverage moves to beat Altaria regardless, such as Hidden Power Ice and Stone Edge. Flamethrower prevents certain Steel-types such as Alolan Dugtrio and Alolan Sandslash from switching into Altaria for free. However, it is otherwise poor coverage against foes such as Qwilfish and Poliwrath, which can be dangerous if they are carrying Taunt or Substitute. Hidden Power Ground functions similarly but hits certain Steel-types such as Togedemaru, Aggron, and Probopass harder and hits Qwilfish super effectively. However, it's extraordinarily weak and misses out on the ability to hit foes such as Mesprit entirely, especially if Altaria drops Toxic to make room for it. As a result, it is only passable on teams extremely weak to Aggron. Dragon Dance allows Altaria to sweep and wallbreak late-game; it can lure in its usual answers such as Aurorus, Aggron, and Clefairy and remove them with Earthquake and Iron Tail, and it can blast through unsuspecting foes with a Z-Move. Thanks to its multiple resistances and good bulk, it also has more opportunities to set up versus Pokemon such as Eelektross. Overall, though, such a set is quite weak and easy to revenge kill even after a boost.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type Coverage**: Due to Altaria's 4x weakness to Ice, Pokemon such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Alolan Sandslash can all outspeed it and OHKO it with their respective Ice-type STAB moves, caring little for Toxic and Dragon Pulse. All of the above can also run entry hazards, making Altaria's job as a Defogger quite difficult, as they threaten it out. Alolan Sandslash can notably use Altaria as setup fodder for Substitute and Swords Dance. Hitmonchan, Ludicolo, and offensive Lanturn and Mesprit can threaten Altaria in a similar fashion with Ice Punch and Ice Beam. However, Altaria beats most of them if they are not carrying said coverage.

**Rock-types**: Pokemon such as Aggron, Lycanroc, Carracosta, and Omastar can all threaten Altaria with their super effective STAB attacks or, in Omastar's case, Ice Beam. The latter three can all set up on Altaria as well, only being annoyed by Toxic or chip from Dragon Pulse. Regirock can overwhelm Altaria between Toxic and Stone Edge, easing its ability to set Stealth Rock against it and pressure it later on.

**Clefairy**: Thanks to Magic Guard and its Fairy typing, Clefairy walls Altaria completely. It can set up Stealth Rock on it Altaria repeatedly and forces it to switch out to heal off Clefairy's Toxic with Natural Cure. Altaria is also complete setup bait for Clefairy using Calm Mind.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Pokemon such as Zangoose, Stoutland, and Choice Band Skuntank all pressure Altaria on its weaker physically defensive side. All three care little about Toxic as well, as the former two carry Facade and the latter is immune.

**Taunt and Substitute**: Due to Altaria's reliance on Toxic, Taunt users such as Sableye, Oricorio-G, and Qwilfish can shut it down almost completely, leaving it with only a weak Dragon Pulse. From there, they can set up stat boosts, set entry hazards, or wear it down with attacks. The former two even have recovery, making it impossible for Altaria to wear them down. Substitute users such as Alolan Dugtrio can also chip away at Altaria with Toxic or attacks or use it as setup bait, provided Altaria is not carrying coverage such as Flamethrower.

**Bulky Setup Sweepers**: Spiritomb, Type: Null, and Munchlax all capitalize on Altaria's passiveness and use it as bait for setting up with Calm Mind, Swords Dance, or Curse. They can all shrug off Altaria's Toxic, too, thanks to Rest.

  • Altaria makes for a solid pick on bulkier builds as a defensive Defogger.
  • Good bulk, Roost, and Dragon / Flying typing allow it to check many powerful threats such as Eelektross, Lilligant, and Mesprit. This also makes it a more durable remover compared to competition such as Silvally-Dragon, and lets Altaria avoid Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web.

  • Altaria is extraordinarily passive, inviting many wallbreakers such as Aggron and Stoutland in for free. Its overeliance on Toxic leave it helpless against Pokemon such as Skuntank and Clefairy. Taunt and Substitute users such as Oricorio-G and Alolan Sandslash can also turn it into setup bait.
  • A Stealth Rock weakness makes it easy to overwhelm when checking powerful wallbreakers such as Choice Specs Pyroar, and makes its job as a remover harder when switching into the hazards it wants to remove.
  • A 4× weakness to Ice leaves it helpless against many Ice-types such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Jynx. This also leaves it susceptible to foes that may carry Ice-type coverage such as Kingler and Mesprit.
  • Altaria fares poorly against certain hazard setters such as Clefairy, Aggron, and Froslass due to either being unable to touch them or being threatened out by their attacks.
I would say that this overview does a pretty good job of hitting the right points, but overall I feel that it needs to be structured a little differently as it portrays Altaria a little too much in a negative light/have more overall negative points than positive, which feels a bit disingenuous when analyzing a Pokemon that's as high as A- rank. Since you've gotten all of the stuff right so far, I would say that a good way to circumvent this would be through a final bullet point that says something positive that players can expect out of it in general despite its flaws. Other than that, A bullet point dedicated to going into the specifics (positive and negative) of its competition with other Defog users (Silvallys, Skuntank, Swanna, Articuno, etc.) would also be nice.

evs: 252 HP / 240 SpD / 16 Spe I would like this spread to be changed to 252 HP / 200 SpD / 56 Spe with a Calm Nature as there exists a notable amount of merit in outspeeding Modest Omastar prior to it setting up. Firstly, Altaria always lives an Ice Beam from full (provided Omastar is not Life Orb) which allows it to either get off chip damage with STAB or Toxic in the event that Omastar goes for that option immediately as opposed to setting up, which could net an advantageous position when stopping Omastar for the team. You still retain the bulk that is needed to take on the threats that Altaria is intended to check otherwise. I guess the extra speed is also situationally useful in theory for when you're up against a hazard stack Crustle lead, but this is mainly about Omastar.

  • Defog lets Altaria to support its team by removing entry hazards from Pokemon such as Regirock and Weezing. Expand upon this by referring to certain hazard setters that Altaria can safely come in and take advantage of. Weezing is alright to talk about but Regirock is a little more shaky.
  • Toxic allows Altaria to chip away at bulkier foes such as Eelektross and Mesprit without relying on its mediocre offensive stats. It also puts a timer on attackers and sweepers such as Kingler and Scyther.
  • Dragon Pulse prevents Altaria from being complete Taunt and Substitute bait to Pokemon such as Pyroar, Qwilfish, and Poliwrath. It also helps rack up chip damage overall.
  • Roost keeps Altaria healthy allowing it to remove hazards and check Pokemon such as Lilligant more comfortably throughout the game.
All of Dragonbreath, Flamethrower, and Hidden Power Ground warrant mentions here. Dragonbreath's utility in spreading paralysis can be very useful in offering some sort of refuge against faster Taunt users that make it a tad more daunting for Altaria to do its job, as a paralysis on Pyroar, Qwilfish, or Weezing can allow it to net a safe Defog or Roost in situations where such opportunities would otherwise be absent. Flamethrower is still relevant in offering strong coverage against foes like Alolan Dugtrio and Alolan Sandslash to prevent Altaria from being bait against them, and Hidden Power Ground is obviously useful against Aggron while also hitting Qwilfish super effectively and maintaining coverage against most of the same Steel-types, especially Probopass and Togedemaru.

Set Details

  • The given EV spread with a Calm nature maximizes Altaria's special bulk what does this allow it to take on?, with 16 EVs invested in speed to outspeed Adamant Aggron.
  • Altaria can run up to 80 Speed EVs to be faster than Modest Aurorus; however, this comes at a remarkably worse matchup against breakers such as Choice Specs Pyroar, and even with the speed advantage Altaria is unable to do much to Aurorus.
  • Leftovers is the preferred item as it grants Altaria passive recovery during the match.
  • Natural Cure relieves Altaria of status condition, namely Toxic, upon switching out, which improves its matchup against opposing bulky Toxic users such as Regirock. It also helps Altaria's ability to check threats such as Lanturn.
Apply changes based on the new EV spread given in the previous section.

Team Options
========
  • Due to Altaria's passive nature, it usually belongs on bulkier builds such as balance or stall. This is more so my preferred style of prefacing this rather than any requirement per say, but I think it would be great if you were able to expand upon this by providing a general statement for why teams of these archetypes would appreciate what Altaria has to offer (what it does, what it offers important checks of this archetypes to, etc.)
  • Pokemon susceptible to hazard chip such as Pyroar and Lanturn appreciate Altaria's Defog support increasing their longevity. The former values Altaria wearing down checks such as Lanturn and Regirock, whereas the latter has decent defensive synergy with Altaria; Lanturn offers a check to Aurorus, while Altaria beats Grass-types such as Lilligant. While Altaria can potentially be in a position to Toxic Lanturn or Regirock, these are really not solid example of things that Altaria is meant to try to wear down due to the potential issues it can face when trying to deal with them. In fact, it's often the other way around in that Altaria tends to struggles vs them and you could talk about how Grassinum Z Pyroar could lure them well and how Lanturn appreciates a check to Eelektross, among other things.
  • Checks to Ice-types such as Froslass and Aurorus are greatly appreciated. Poliwrath and Lanturn can check Ice-types decently and appreciates Altaria removing Spikes and Toxic Spikes; Poliwrath can also check Rock-types such as Aggron in exchange. Good examples so far but I'd also like to see more GSI-level examples of what you're talking about here as that is often what Altaria really demands in the case of threats like Aurorus or Alolan Sandslash. Stuff like Munchlax, Alolan Sandslash, AV Crabominale, etc. could fit the bill well while more offensive checks as examples can be referenced in the case of Togedemaru or Lycanroc.
  • Altaria's passiveness often invites many powerful physical attackers in for little to no cost. Checks to such Pokemon, namely to Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Alolan Sandslash, are appreciated. Gurdurr does well at checking all three, as does Poliwrath. In return, Altaria checks Mesprit and Swanna, amongst others. Sounds good but what if my Altaria team demands a more defensive route? This is where you talk about good defensive blanket checks to physical attackers (regirock, tangela, sableye, etc.) and how they compliment altaria and vice versa.
  • Altaria likes a teammate to beat Clefairy, as it ignores Altaria's Toxic and Dragon Pulse and can set up repeated Stealth Rock or Calm Mind. Aggron and Kingler beat it quite comfortably, and appreciate Altaria's ability to check special attackers. The latter also appreciates Altaria's ability to remove entry hazards given its susceptibility to offensive pressure.
  • On stall builds, Natu or a secondary remover such as Articuno or Skuntank can be used in addition to Altaria to give the team a better matchup against Spikes from the likes of Qwilfish and Froslass, who can otherwise annoy Altaria with Taunt. When engaging the topic of Altaria's merit in team options for stall-oriented builds, I'd really rather you start off by explaining how it pairs well with the standard stall staples in general (Audino, Pyukumuku, etc.) before going down to the more niche options
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • A more physically defensive spread can ease Altaria's matchup against certain physical attackers such as Kingler and Primeape, but simultaneously makes it more pressured by Pokemon such as Choice Specs Pyroar and +1 Lilligant. Phys Def also makes it dramatically easier at taking on Regirock, allowing it to more safely Toxic it and disrupt its ability to safely keep its hazards up
  • Heal Bell is an option on bulkier archetypes that allows Altaria to function as a cleric. Altaria has a hard time finding room, though, and Audino already accomplishes the role of a cleric on similar archetypes.
  • Haze and Roar give Altaria the upper hand against certain boosters such as Kingler, Lilligant, and Oricorio-G. However, Altaria either beats them most of the time anyways, or, in Oricorio-G's case, is shut down regardless by Taunt. Perish Song has a similar effect, forcing sweepers to switch out, as well as other Pokemon, but in practice it's ineffective at actually eliminating any threats. Honestly just mention better examples, like Haze vs Gurdurr etc.
  • Dragon Dance allows Altaria to sweep and break late-game, as well as lure usual answers such as Aurorus, Aggron, and Clefairy with Earthquake and Iron Tail. Overall, though, such a set is quite weak and easy to revenge kill even after a boost. I would talk about its offensive presence with certain z moves and make a point of its overall bulk and set of resistances that give it ease in setting up vs some threats
  • Cotton Guard can be used to wall foes such as Kangaskhan after a boost, but Altaria still has trouble switching into physical attacks initially, especially factoring in Stealth Rock. Z-Toxic can do the same without taking up an extra moveslot, but doesn't boost Altaria's defense as drastically. It can also only be used once, making it useless after switching out, takes up a Z-Crystal, and sacrifices the passive recovery of Leftovers.
Z-Draco warrants a mention here somewhere

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types**: Due to Altaria's 4× Ice-type weakness, Pokemon such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Alolan Sandslash can all outspeed and OHKO it with their respective Ice-types STAB moves, caring little for Toxic and Dragon Pulse. All of the above can also run entry hazards, making Altaria's job as a Defogger quite difficult, as they threaten it out. Alolan Sandslash can notably use Altaria as setup fodder for Substitute and Swords Dance.
I would expand this section to include certain Pokemon with Ice-type coverage that can switch into Altaria comfortably and beat it, such as Hitmonchan (this is also not a wallbreaker, so it doesn't really belong into the Physical Wallbreakers category either way), Ludicolo, offensive Lanturn, and occasionally Mesprit. It would also likely require a renaming of some sort to reflect that this issue is not necessarily limited to just Ice-type Pokemon, like **Ice-type Pokemon and Coverage**.

A section for Rock-types needs to be here as they are among the best at heavily pressuring Altaria and capitalize on it in varying ways. Aggron, Lycanroc, Carracosta, Omastar, etc. all either pose an immediate threat to it or can find opportunities to set up on it at a reasonable amount of health. There's also Regirock to an extent, who can pressure it enough between its STAB and Toxic to be able to get its Stealth Rock up by the time Altaria is forced to switch out.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Pokemon such as Zangoose, Stoutland, and Aggron (Move this to the Rock-types section) all pressure Altaria on its weaker physically defensive side. All three care little for Toxic, as the former two carry Facade and the latter is immune. Hitmonchan takes little from Dragon Pulse, and retaliates with Ice Punch. It can also take the forced switch as an opportunity to Rapid Spin.

**Clefairy**: Thanks to Magic Guard and its Fairy typing, Clefairy walls Altaria completely. It can set up Stealth Rock on it repeatedly, and forces it to switch out to heal off Clefairy's Toxic with Natural Cure. Altaria is also complete setup bait for Clefairy using Calm Mind.

**Taunt and Substitute**: Due to Altaria's reliance on Toxic, Taunt users such as Pyroar, Oricorio-Sensu, and Qwilfish can shut it down almost completely, leaving it with only a weak Dragon Pulse. From there, the aforementioned can set up stat boosts, hazards, or wear it down with attacks. Substitute users such as Alolan Dugtrio can also chip away at Altaria with Toxic, attacks, or use it as setup bait.
The validity of a Pyroar mention on this section is very questionable considering that it is getting chipped down too much by repeated hits of Dragon Pulse to the point where it can't beat it 1v1 if the Altaria is healthy enough. Qwilfish is an alright mention though, seeing as it's simultaneously doing this while stacking up hazards and can threaten with a potential Destiny Bond outright if Altaria tries to get aggressive. Sableye is another passable mention, as it outright beats Altaria 1v1 after Taunting it.

Add a final section of Checks and Counters in the form of Bulky Setup Sweepers. While this category does not involve Pokemon that impede Altaria's ability to do its job, they all take full advantage of Altaria's passiveness and are completely oblivious to Toxic (Crotomb, Munchlax, and Type: Null, to be exact).
Implement this and 1/3. Kacaw! :pimp:

Poliwrath and Lanturn can check Ice-types decently (hesitant to say this bc they both take a tonne from aurorus' freeze-dry and struggle versus STAB moves from other ices like abomasnow and jynx.) and appreciates Altaria removing Spikes and Toxic Spikes; Poliwrath can also check Rock-types such as Aggron in exchange. Sturdier defensive answers also include Munchlax, Alolan Sandslash, and Assault Vest Crabominable, with the latter greatly appreciating Altaria's Defog due to being prone to chip damage
  • Altaria's passiveness often invites many powerful physical attackers in for little to no cost. Checks to such Pokemon, namely to Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Alolan Sandslash, are appreciated. Gurdurr does well at checking all three, as does Poliwrath. More defensive partners such as Sableye and Tangela accomplish a similar role, and help whittle down the opposing team with status, Leech Seed, and Knock Off. In return, Altaria Checks special attackers such as Swanna and removes Spikes and Toxic Spikes.
  • Altaria likes a teammate to beat Clefairy, as it ignores Altaria's Toxic and Dragon Pulse and can set up repeated Stealth Rock or Calm Mind. Aggron and Alolan Sandslash beat it quite comfortably, and appreciate Altaria's ability to check special attackers.
  • Altaria synergizes well with typical stall picks such as Audino and Pyukumuku, as they appreciate Altaria's ability to remove hazards, and check threats such as Kangaskhan and Aurorus. Natu or a secondary remover such as Articuno or Skuntank can be used in addition to Altaria on such archetypes to give the team a better matchup against Spikes from the likes of Qwilfish and Froslass, who can otherwise annoy Altaria with Taunt.

Other Options
=============
  • A more physically defensive spread can ease Altaria's matchup against certain physical attackers such as Regirock and Primeape, notably allowing it to better switch into, Toxic stall, and remove the hazards of the former. However, it simultaneously makes it more pressured by special attackers such as Offensive Mesprit and +1 Lilligant.
  • Heal Bell is an option on bulkier archetypes that allows Altaria to function as a cleric. Altaria has a hard time finding room, though, and Audino already accomplishes the role of a cleric on similar archetypes.
  • Haze and Roar give Altaria the upper hand against certain boosters such as Gurdurr, Lilligant, and Pinsir. However, even when unboosted, said foes can carry coverage to beat Altaria regardless, such as Hidden Power Ice and Stone Edge. Perish Song has a similar effect, forcing sweepers to switch out, as well as other Pokemon, but in practice it's ineffective at actually eliminating any threats.
  • Dragon Dance allows Altaria to sweep and break late-game, as well as lure usual answers such as Aurorus, Aggron, and Clefairy with Earthquake and Iron Tail, and blast through unsuspecting foes with a Z-Move. Thanks to its multiple resistances and good bulk, it also has more opportunities to set up versus Pokemon such as Eelektross. Overall, though, such a set is quite weak and easy to revenge kill even after a boost.
  • Draco Meteor along with Dragonium Z leave a massive dent in unsuspecting foes such as Skuntank, but it leaves it susceptible to being setup bait after the Z-Move has been used due to Draco Meteor's Special Attack drop.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type Coverage**: Due to Altaria's 4× Ice-type weakness, Pokemon such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Alolan Sandslash can all outspeed and OHKO it with their respective Ice-types STAB moves, caring little for Toxic and Dragon Pulse. (i feel like emphasizing that altaria would otherwise be able to handle them could be done, it helps drive the point home or smth.)

**Rock-types**: Pokemon such as Aggron, Lycanroc, Carracosta, and Omastar can all threaten Altaria with their super effective STAB attacks, or, in Omastar's case, Ice Beam. The latter three can all set up on Altaria as well, only being annoyed by Toxic or chip from Dragon Pulse. Regirock can overwhelm Altaria between Toxic and Stone Edge, easing its ability to get up Stealth Rock against it and pressure it later on.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Pokemon such as Zangoose, Stoutland, and Choice Band Skuntank all pressure Altaria on its weaker physically defensive side. All three care little for Toxic as well, as the former two carry Facade and the latter is immune.

**Taunt and Substitute**: Due to Altaria's reliance on Toxic, Taunt users such as Sableye, Oricorio-Sensu, and Qwilfish can shut it down almost completely, leaving it with only a weak Dragon Pulse. From there, the aforementioned can set up stat boosts, hazards, or wear it down with attacks. (the former two also boast recovery, meaning that dragon pulse isn't wearing them down like it is with qwil.) Substitute users such as Alolan Dugtrio can also chip away at Altaria with Toxic, attacks, or use it as setup bait, provided Altaria is not carrying coverage such as Flamethrower.

**Bulky Setup Sweepers**: Spiritomb, Type: Null, and Munchlax all capitalize on Altaria's passiveness and use it as bait for setting up with Calm Mind, Swords Dance, and Curse, respectively. They can all heal off Altaria's Toxic, too, thanks to RestTalk.

[OVERVIEW]

Altaria makes for a solid pick on bulkier builds as a defensive Defogger. Good bulk, Roost, and Dragon / Flying typing allow it to check many powerful threats such as Eelektross, Lilligant, and Mesprit, assuming the latter two aren't carrying Ice-type coverage (if this is the case then maybe they aren't the best choice for header examples. you could shrink it down to just the types as well...so instead of lilligant its "grass types" or other threats like that.). This also makes it a more durable remover compared to competition such as Silvally-Dragon, and lets Altaria avoid Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. Natural Cure lets Altaria act as a status sponge for its team, and gives it an edge when facing other defensive Toxic users such as Regirock. However, Altaria is rather passive, inviting many wallbreakers such as Aggron and Stoutland in for free. Its overeliance on Toxic leave it helpless against Pokemon such as Skuntank and Clefairy. Taunt and Substitute users such as Oricorio-G and Alolan Sandslash can also turn it into setup bait. Other removers such as Hitmonchan and Skuntank are preferred on certain teams over Altaria due to being less passive, packing forms of speed control in Mach Punch and Sucker Punch and being faster overall, and an ability to check certain Pokemon such as Aurorus and Aggron. A Stealth Rock weakness makes it Altaria easier to overwhelm when checking powerful wallbreakers such as Primeape, and makes its job as a remover harder when switching into the hazards it wants to remove. A 4× weakness to Ice leaves it helpless against many Ice-types such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Jynx. This also leaves it susceptible to foes that may carry Ice-type coverage such as Poliwrath and Mesprit. Altaria fares poorly against certain hazard setters such as Clefairy, Aggron, and Froslass due to either being unable to touch them or being threatened out by their attacks. Despite its shortcomings, Altaria's Defog and defensive utility are great strengths for bulkier teams looking to include it. (this is mainly a GP gripe i think but basically i feel like these sentences dont link up very well. they feel like bullet points still)

Defog lets Altaria to support its team by removing entry hazards, and allows it to benefit from its ability to switch into certain setters such as Mesprit and Weezing (how does defog help it switch in on mesprit and weezing?). Toxic allows Altaria to chip away at bulkier foes such as Eelektross and Mesprit without relying on its mediocre offensive stats. It also puts a timer on attackers and sweepers such as Carracosta and Scyther. Dragon Pulse prevents Altaria from being complete Taunt and Substitute bait to Pokemon such as Qwilfish, while also helps rack up chip damage overall. Roost keeps Altaria healthy allowing it to remove hazards and check Pokemon such as Lilligant more comfortably throughout the game. Dragon Breath can let Altaria spread paralysis throughout the opposing team, and also give it a speed advantage against Taunt users that would otherwise annoy it such as Qwilfish, or simply Roost or Defog against an otherwise faster foe. Dragon Pulse, though, is usually preferred as the extra chip on foes such as Qwilfish can often prove to be valuable. Hidden Power Ground functions similarly, but gets a stronger hit against certain Steel-types such as Togedemaru, Aggron, and Probopass, and hits Qwilfish super effectively as well. However, it's extraordinarily weak and misses out on the ability to hit foes such as Mesprit entirely, especially if it drops Toxic to make room for it. Hidden Power Ground is only passable on teams extremely weak to Aggron. (talked with yogi and we both agree that these moves should be moved down to OO. if they arent good enough to be slashed then they arent good enough to be in set comments)

Set Details

The given EV spread with a Calm nature maximizes Altaria's special bulk, allowing it to comfortably wall threats such as Lilligant. 56 EVs invested in speed is to outspeed Modest Omastar, which can be crucial in certain scenarios to get off a Toxic or Dragon Pulse. Leftovers is the preferred item as it grants Altaria passive recovery during the match. Natural Cure relieves Altaria of status condition, namely Toxic, upon switching out, which improves its matchup against opposing bulky Toxic users such as Regirock. It also helps Altaria's ability to check threats such as Lanturn without Ice Beam.

Usage Tips
========

Altaria should generally be brought in against foes that it walls, such as Eelektross, and use the forced switch as an opportunity to Defog away any hazards that are on your side of the field. If there are no hazards to remove, or if they are of little concern, Altaria can instead focus on spreading Toxic throughout the opposing team to weaken them for late-game. Use Roost whenever Altaria health begins to dwindle, as it otherwise may not be able to switch into Stealth Rock later in the game to remove it. It will also have trouble checking threats such as Primeape and Lilligant if it's not at full health. If the opponent has a Pokemon that Altaria invites in for free, such as Aggron or Aurorus, double switching is a smart play as said Pokemon can wreak havoc once on the field.

========

Due to Altaria's passive nature, it usually belongs on bulkier builds such as balance, bulky offense, or stall due to its ability to check otherwise troublesome threats such as Lilligant and Eelektross. Its passive nature also makes it undesirable on offensive or hyper offensive builds, who are often more momentum-based. Pokemon susceptible to hazard chip such as Aurorus and Lanturn appreciate Altaria's Defog support increasing their longevity. The latter has decent defensive synergy with Altaria; Lanturn offers a check to Aurorus, while Altaria beats Grass-types such as Lilligant, as well as Eelektross. Checks to Ice-types such as Froslass and Aurorus are greatly appreciated. Poliwrath and Lanturn can check Ice-types decently if they're wary of Freeze-Dry or secondary STABs from Pokemon such as Abomasnow. They appreciate Altaria removing Spikes and Toxic Spikes; Poliwrath can also check Rock-types such as Aggron in exchange. Sturdier defensive answers also include Munchlax, Alolan Sandslash, and Assault Vest Crabominable, with the latter greatly appreciating Altaria's Defog due to being prone to chip damage. Altaria's passiveness often invites many powerful physical attackers in for little to no cost. Checks to such Pokemon, namely to Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Alolan Sandslash, are appreciated. Gurdurr does well at checking all three, as does Poliwrath. Aggron and Alolan Sandslash beat it quite comfortably, and appreciate Altaria's ability to check special attackers. Altaria synergizes well with typical stall picks such as Audino and Pyukumuku, as they appreciate Altaria's ability to remove hazards, and check threats such as Kangaskhan and Aurorus. Natu or a secondary remover such as Articuno or Skuntank can be used in addition to Altaria on such archetypes to give the team a better matchup against Spikes from the likes of Qwilfish and Froslass, who can otherwise annoy Altaria with Taunt.

Altaria can run up to 80 Speed EVs to be faster than Modest Aurorus; however, this comes at a remarkably worse matchup against Pokemon such as Lilligant (remarkably is a pretty strong word, how is it remarkably worse?), and even with the speed advantage Altaria is unable to do much to Aurorus. A more physically defensive spread can ease Altaria's matchup against certain physical attackers such as Regirock and Primeape, notably allowing it to better switch into, Toxic stall, and remove the hazards of the former. However, it simultaneously makes it more pressured by special attackers such as Offensive Mesprit and +1 Lilligant. Heal Bell is an option on bulkier archetypes that allows Altaria to function as a cleric. Altaria has a hard time finding room, though, and Audino already accomplishes the role of a cleric on similar archetypes. Haze and Roar give Altaria the upper hand against certain boosters such as Gurdurr, Lilligant, and Pinsir. However, even when unboosted, said foes can carry coverage to beat Altaria regardless, such as Hidden Power Ice and Stone Edge (cant help but feel like this misses the point. the point of roar is to get rid of setup and stack up hazard damage. haze does the same thing without the hazard damage. its less "getting the upper hand" and more of "providing utility to prevent setup". it also lets altaria beat sub users, but not taunt users). Perish Song has a similar effect, forcing sweepers to switch out, as well as other Pokemon, but in practice it's ineffective at actually eliminating any threats. Dragon Dance allows Altaria to sweep and break late-game, as well as lure usual answers such as Aurorus, Aggron, and Clefairy with Earthquake and Iron Tail, and blast through unsuspecting foes with a Z-Move. Thanks to its multiple resistances and good bulk, it also has more opportunities to set up versus Pokemon such as Eelektross. Overall, though, such a set is quite weak and easy to revenge kill even after a boost. Cotton Guard can be used to wall foes such as Kangaskhan after a boost, but Altaria still has trouble switching into physical attacks initially, especially factoring in Stealth Rock. Z-Toxic can do the same without taking up an extra moveslot, but doesn't boost Altaria's defense as drastically. It can also only be used once, making it useless after switching out, takes up a Z-Crystal, and sacrifices the passive recovery of Leftovers. **Bulky Setup Sweepers**: Spiritomb, Type: Null, and Munchlax all capitalize on Altaria's passiveness and use it as bait for setting up with Calm Mind, Swords Dance, and or Curse, respectively. They can all heal off Altaria's Toxic, too, thanks to RestTalk.

[OVERVIEW]

Altaria makes for is a solid pick on bulkier builds as a defensive Defogger and check to powerful threats such as Eelektross, Swanna, and Lilligant thanks to its good bulk, access to Roost, and Dragon / Flying typing allowing it to check many powerful threats such as Eelektross, Swanna, and Grass-types such as Lilligant. Altaria's also a more durable entry hazard remover compared to competition than other entry hazard removers (conciseness) such as Silvally-Dragon, and its typing makes it immune to Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. It also offers a useful ability in Altaria also has Natural Cure, ("offer" is the incorrect verb as it is not offering the ability to any person or thing, it has the ability and uses it itself. Also, the usefulness of the ability is detailed in the rest of the sentence so it's not necessary to mention it again here) letting Altaria it act as a status sponge for its team and giving it an edge when facing other defensive Toxic users such as Regirock. Other Some teams may also prefer other hazard removers such as Hitmonchan and Skuntank may also be preferred on certain teams over Altaria due to being less passive, keeping faster foes in check via Mach Punch, Sucker Punch, and greater overall Speed, and an ability to check certain Pokemon such as Aurorus and Aggron their lesser passivity, ability to check faster foes with priority moves and Speed investment, and ability to check Pokemon such as Aurorus and Clefairy. (clarity, parallelism, and changing passive voice into active voice for conciseness and increased readability. Also used clef>agg because an example of a mon skuntank checks was needed.) A Altaria's (Attribute traits to Pokemon instead of starting out with "A [trait]" in sentences like this, as it's more clear to the reader when they don't have to read midway through the sentence to understand the subject fully) Stealth Rock weakness makes Altaria it easier to overwhelm when it's checking powerful wallbreakers such as Primeape and makes its job as a remover harder when it's switching into the hazards it wants to remove Stealth Rock. A Altaria's 4x weakness to Ice leaves it helpless against many Ice-types such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Jynx. (RP) This also leaves it susceptible to, (AC) as well as foes that may carry Ice-type coverage such as Poliwrath and Mesprit. Additionally, Altaria fares poorly against certain hazard setters such as Clefairy, Aggron, and Froslass due to either being unable to touch them or being threatened out by their attacks. However, despite its shortcomings, Altaria's Defog and defensive utility and access to Defog are great strengths for bulkier teams looking to include it.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Dragon Pulse prevents Altaria Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Haunter (needed example of a sub user, asa gave me one) from being complete freely using Taunt and Substitute bait to Pokemon such as Qwilfish against Altaria while also helping to rack up chip damage overall. Roost keeps Altaria healthy, (remove doublespace)allowing it to remove hazards and check Pokemon such as Lilligant more comfortably throughout the game.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread with a Calm nature maximizes Altaria's special bulk, allowing it to comfortably wall threats such as Lilligant. 56 EVs are invested in Speed (remove doublespace)to outspeed Modest Omastar, which can be crucial in certain scenarios to get off a Toxic or Dragon Pulse. Leftovers is the preferred item, as it grants Altaria passive recovery during the match. Natural Cure relieves Altaria of status, mainly Toxic poison, upon switching out, which improves its matchup against opposing bulky Toxic users such as Regirock. It also helps Altaria's ability to Altaria check threats such as Lanturn without lacking Ice Beam.

Usage Tips
========

Altaria should generally be brought in against foes that it walls, such as Eelektross, and use the forced switch as an opportunity to Defog away any entry hazards that are on your side of the field. If there are no hazards to remove, (RC) or if they are of little concern, Altaria can instead focus on spreading Toxic poison throughout the opposing team to weaken them for late-game. Use Roost whenever Altaria's health begins to dwindle, as it otherwise may not be able to switch into Stealth Rock later in the game to remove it use Defog.

========

The latter has decent defensive synergy with Altaria; Lanturn offers a check to Aurorus, while Altaria beats Eelektross and Grass-types such as Lilligant as well as Eelektross. Altaria likes a teammate to beat Clefairy, as it ignores Altaria's Toxic and Dragon Pulse and can set up repeated Stealth Rock or repeatedly set Stealth Rock or set up with Calm Mind.

Other Options (From jlkioe: remove unviable other options; other options section is supposed to contain sets with an actual tournament or ladder niche and should be tested in some manner.)
=============

Altaria can run up to 80 Speed EVs to be faster than Modest Aurorus; however, this comes at the cost of a noticeably worse matchup against Pokemon such as Lilligant, and even with the Speed advantage, Altaria is unable to do much to Aurorus. A more physically defensive spread can ease Altaria's matchup against certain physical attackers such as Regirock and Primeape, notably allowing it to better switch into, Toxic stall, and remove the hazards of the former. However, it simultaneously makes it more pressured by this causes special attackers such as offensive Mesprit and +1 Lilligant to pressure Altaria more. Perish Song has a similar effect, forcing sweepers to switch out, as well as other Pokemon, but in practice it's ineffective at actually eliminating any threats. Dragon Breath lets Altaria spread paralysis throughout the opposing team and can give it a speed advantage against Taunt users that would otherwise annoy it such as Qwilfish or simply let it Roost or Defog against an otherwise faster foe. Dragon Pulse, though, is usually preferred, as the extra chip on foes can often prove to be valuable. Hidden Power Ground functions similarly(remove doublespace) but gets a stronger hit against hits certain Steel-types such as Togedemaru, Aggron, and Probopass harder and hits Qwilfish super effectively. However, it's extraordinarily weak and misses out on the ability to hit foes such as Mesprit entirely, especially if Altaria drops Toxic to make room for it. As a result, it is only passable on teams extremely weak to Aggron. Dragon Dance allows Altaria to sweep and break late-game, as well as lure wallbreak late-game; it can lure in its usual answers such as Aurorus, Aggron, and Clefairy and remove them with Earthquake and Iron Tail and, (AC) and it can blast through unsuspecting foes with a Z-Move. Z-Toxic can do the same without taking up an extra moveslot, but it doesn't boost Altaria's defense as drastically. It can also only be used once, making it useless after switching out, takes up a Z-Crystal, and sacrifices the passive recovery of Leftovers. Draco Meteor along with Dragonium Z leaves a massive dent in unsuspecting foes such as Skuntank, but it leaves Altaria susceptible to being rendered setup bait after the Z-Move has been used due to Draco Meteor's Special Attack drop.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type Coverage**: Due to Altaria's 4x Ice-type weakness to Ice, Pokemon such as Aurorus, Froslass, and Alolan Sandslash can all outspeed it and OHKO it with their respective Ice-type STAB moves, caring little for Toxic and Dragon Pulse.

Regirock can overwhelm Altaria between Toxic and Stone Edge, easing its ability to get up set Stealth Rock against it and pressure it later on.

**Clefairy**: Thanks to Magic Guard and its Fairy typing, Clefairy walls Altaria completely. It can set up Stealth Rock on it Altaria repeatedly (remove doublespace)and forces it to switch out to heal off Clefairy's Toxic with Natural Cure. Altaria is also complete setup bait for Clefairy using Calm Mind.

**Physical Wallbreakers**: Pokemon such as Zangoose, Stoutland, and Choice Band Skuntank all pressure Altaria on its weaker physically defensive side. All three care little for about Toxic as well, as the former two carry Facade and the latter is immune.

Substitute users such as Alolan Dugtrio can also chip away at Altaria with Toxic or attacks (remove doublespace)or use it as setup bait, provided Altaria is not carrying coverage such as Flamethrower.

**Bulky Setup Sweepers**: Spiritomb, Type: Null, and Munchlax all capitalize on Altaria's passiveness and use it as bait for setting up with Calm Mind, Swords Dance, or Curse. They can all heal shrug off Altaria's Toxic, too, thanks to RestTalk Rest.
