Media Anime and Manga Thread MK3 - Beware Spoilers

how does everyone feel about black clover, i personally think its the best ongoing new gen anime but i'm open to an opinion change
It's a p good shonen anime. Their opening animation is 10/10. My only "problem" with new shonen anime are that the characters aren't iconic yet. Part of why I love Naruto so much is because how iconic it is.

I agree but it took 20+ years for the og big 3 to build their complete legacy so we should give these ongoing new gens the same chance

What anime’s are you all annoying you’re friends to watch? You can send that at me bc I am looking for some.
One of my favorite anime has to be World Trigger! Definitely give that a go if you haven't seen it (they are currently writing new chapters for the manga so no idea when newer episodes will happen for the anime but it's still worth the watch).

Isn’t World Trigger the one where the anime director begged people to pirate it? I can’t find the article but I feel like I remember something like that back in late 2015 or early 2016

I just caught up to a manga called Record of Ragnarok and it's fucking amazing. I'd recommend it to anyone that likes mythology and fighting anime it's extremely well written. Ongoing too

Am I jaded and sad or is BNHA extremely annoying
Nah, there are plenty of us who aren't all in on the bandwagon. BnHA does shounen very well but it also milks the hell out of all the tropes that go along with the genre. It's a top tier gateway anime IMO, but to someone already fully vested in watching anime, a mainstream appeal shounen is not what I'm looking for lol. I grew up on One Piece first (Fox Box sunday mornings) then FMA and eventually Bleach, so BnHA is milquetoast. But for a large portion of anime fans it's just right.

I found that article you were talking about Martin LOL. Wow, what a shame I didn't even know that happened. Nonetheless, I still think it is a really good watch especially considering they were confirmed for a season 2 just a few months ago. I believe it drops in 2021 iirc. I've been keeping up with the manga and honestly the story has gotten much more complex and the fight scenes are truly topnotch. Cannot wait to see the anime adaptation for it!

I just started on AoT and have been reading it for about 2 or 3 days now. It's EXTREMELY enjoyable and I finally see where all the hype is coming from. The series is very well written every pretty early on. Is the series about to end? Or is this gonna be like some one piece shit where it has 1000+ chapters.

Really sucks that AoT is getting pushed back again, hopefully that will make the quality that much higher. Anyways there is definitely some other shows to look forward to, like Noblesse and Jujutsu Kaisen.

Hey, can I get some help? I'm looking for something, I don't got a name but I was wondering if anyone knows about shonen anime/manga primarily starring kemonomimi. I love me some cat/dog/insert animal here girls but I also don't want any of that saccharine and/or creepy ecchi slice of crap, I want some high octane action with badass warrior women beating people up, you feel me?

Don't you dare bullshit me with any of that "Something like that doesn't exist" nonsense. I know someone out there has to have made it, we just need to find it. The world of independent manga especially is too vast for it not to exist. Feel free to ignore this or say "I tried my best but couldn't find anything", but I will not take the aforementioned hypothetical answer because I know at my core it is patently false.

So in short: Kemonomimi-based shonen. The less pandering to neckbeards and pedophiles the better.

Beastars and Brand New Animal are pretty popular and recent.

They have punchy kicky stuff? I'm not overly familiar with them but from what I do know I thought they were a detective story/slice of life respectively. I'm looking for something more along the lines of Hokuto No Ken or Hunter X Hunter

Also by Kemonomimi I mean like human catgirls n shit, full-on anthro I'd take but would prefer that

Ive not watched BNA but Beastars is outstanding and everyone should watch or read it. It’s not rlly an action show tho—much more a rom drama. It’s not “slice of life” tho (ts narrative is FAAAAR too prominent for that genre).

Notes
I've watched episodes of Sailer Moon sporadically but never actually completed any of the show so I started that as my casual watch way back in July. Sure it was nostalgic but also super lowbrow, monster of the week oriented and thus took me three months to finish. Casual watch, right lol.

I hit a whole bunch of stuff on Netflix again, primarily exclusives, and once again, lots of mediocre-to-bad shows with a few diamonds in the rough. Carole & Tuesday started strong but floundered around in the second half, unable to make up its mind what type of show to be. A Lull in the Sea isn't exclusive, but I couldn't find another streaming service with the rights. It was an emotional ride driven by the strong cast and lots of character development.

As for the BNA vs Beastars argument, I lean in favor of Brand New Animal. Both shows have a lot of merits and plenty of nits to be picked. I'll admit I was predisposed towards BNA as a long time fan of Trigger's work and I ended up enjoying it more. I wasn't a fan of the forced sexual tension in beastars, and a couple of the rabbit's tendencies/instinctual acts had me cringing at my TV. Meanwhile, BNA had almost nothing sus in it, but also took very few risks and thus came across more bland than just about everything else made by the studio previously. Both shows had top notch animation, Trigger doing it's usual stuff and studio Orange putting out another excellent CGI series. It seems to be a big debate on a lot of forums and fan sites but I can appreciate each show separately, the furries be damned.

There were also quite a few movies I watched worth looking into. MFKZ, Okko's Inn and Children of the Sea are all available on Netflix (US) and are all deserving of praise for very different reasons. MFKZ is co-directed by a French dude and Shoujirou Nishima; mostly famous for his key animation in the 2004 studio 4 degrees Celsius film, Mind Game. The movie is a trip and a half and the story holds up imo. Okko's inn was a comfy heartwarming story in the ghibli vein, and Children of the Sea was a visual delight for the eyes. Black Fox is available on Crunchyroll and all I'll say is most of the budget was in the visuals... sometimes. Dragon Dentist is a two-part OVA 'exclusive' to HiDive. It's definitely hit or miss; I could see detractors picking it apart or fans picking it for awards. I enjoyed the ride but didn't invest myself to much. The animation was top tier at times.

Finally got around to Mushi-shi after it nearly rotted away on my PTW list and lemme tell ya, it didn't disappoint. Looking for something chill and inviting to the eyes? Look no further than Mushi-shi and it's much later continuing seasons. I was pleasantly by the relaxed nature of the show, both the visuals and the directing and sound. It can still manage to instill long lingering emotions over the fates of various side characters. First season is a must watch.

To be continued.

I’m bored and can’t game in this caravan bc I forgot to pack my switch’s AC, and my 3x3 is woefully out of date, so I figured I might as well take advantage of the fact I’ve not watched any anime over the past few months to make a recency bias-free 3x3 that represents the shows that I like the most and had a lasting impact on me.

Couple of notes going in:
  • This is not strictly the shows I think are the best. If it was, you’d see both Ping Pong and TTG on there as they are both 10/10 masterpieces.
    • That said, every show listed is something I would give an “objective” rating of 7/10 or higher (more realistically 8-10 for most) and would recommend people watch.
  • For the purposes of this, I am only including TV shows, movies, and OVAs. If I included music videos, ads, anime sequences in video games etc. I’d be here all day.
  • Separate seasons are being counted together.
  • Items are in no particular order
With that out of the way:

Left to right, top to bottom:
  • Spirited Away (movie)
  • BEASTARS
  • She and Her Cat: Everything Flows
  • From the New World
  • ERASED
  • Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (OVA)
  • Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan
  • Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
  • Chivalry of a Failed Knight

Honourable mentions:
  • Noein: Toward Another You
  • Jin Roh (movie)
  • Lupin III: Part IV
  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Amanchu! (specifically season 2)
  • Cardcaptor Sakura
  • Ping Pong: The Animation
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica
  • A Place Further Than the Universe
  • 3-gatsu no Lion
  • Other stuff I forgot probably
I’m gonna refrain from going into too much detail bc I’m on my phone, but I’ve given some cursory justification below. If you want me to better explain why I like anything here (or if you wanna hear about any of the honourable mentions) just lmk and I’ll be happy to go into more detail when I’m on a laptop or smth.
Spirited Away: Normie-ass pick for first item. Spirited Away is a film both myself and my mum hold close to our hearts, and it really deserves all the praise it gets. It’s as well-crafted a film as Ocarina of Time is a game—it has extensive subtext-driven worldbuilding, an outstandingly simple yet multi-faceted narrative, and is just utterly gorgeous to look at.

BEASTARS: Beastars really stands out among anime drama in how it’s written. It takes itself seriously, doesn’t get bogged down in tropes or forced gags like most other high school anime/manga do, and it has one of the most totally compelling character arcs I have ever encountered. A really unique show and something I strongly recommend to everyone.

She and Her Cat: Everything Flows: This series of four 7-minute (inc. OP/ED) shorts snuck into the Spring 2016 season unnoticed by anyone other than myself, and it hits me really hard every time I watch it. A very grounded look at what life is like when you’re young, out of work, and lost in life, all told through the lens of a house cat. In the space of around 20 minutes, his show tells a better, more complete story and character arc than many 1-2 cour shows and movies do in their entire run, and it resonates with me in a way that nothing else does. This is my all-time favourite anime.

From the New World: Digibro says this is worse than SAO, I say Digibro’s review is mostly idiotic and could look up some spark notes I found on why it is but I cba. SSY is a very good narrative-driven fantasy/soft sci-fi series that has just stuck with me. Don’t really feel confident I can explain this one properly until I watch it again but trust me on this. Only real gripes are with its characters. It also has a bit of a tendency toward exposition, but that’s kinda expected when the book its adapting features contextual world building as opposed to subtextual world building.

ERASED: Another show that me and my mum bonded over. ERASED is my favourite manga and the “past” segments are extremely well adapted. Very well directed and well written on the whole. It was also the show that got me into anime proper, so I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for it in that regard too. As an aside, the London FGC seems to universally like it based on convos I’ve had, which is funny bc the FGC generally only unites over Dragon Ball.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (OVA): I’ve not seen the director’s cut movie so I’m just going off of the original OVA. A beautifully told and presented story of love and loss, and a brilliant contextualisation of Kenshin’s character. A triumph of both writing and direction, this is one of the absolute best things I have ever watched.

Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan: I don’t typically see myself in fictional characters because I just don’t fall into any of the common character archetypes, but Hisone is an exception. She constantly streams every thought she has, she observes the world and states things as she believes they are in a very literal way, she often puts her foot in her mouth and has difficulty expressing her emotions in a controlled manner, and she doesn’t really know what she wants to do with her life. She is a really excellent representative for autism within an industry that typically caricatures and stereotypes it, and it was such a breath of fresh air to watch. The rest of the show is also really fucking good + holy fuck it’s a BONES original, but frankly Hisone is the main reason I love it so much.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: This is an extremely well written and heartfelt character drama—there is a reason everyone raves about it and I’m sure they can explain it better than I ever will.

Chivalry of a Failed Knight: It feels extremely weird me putting an ecchi show on here considering pornography and erotica make my stomach churn more often than not, but Rakudai is actually pretty damn good. It pokes fun at other battle school ecchi shows through a number of funny, harshly critical gags (especially early on—pay attention to the dialogue and keep genre tropes in the back of your mind) and features a compelling relationship-focussed romance narrative. It goes out of its way to fix a few of its genre’s issues and pretty much just serves as a way to illustrate what a similar show could be like if these character tropes were expanded upon and had actual depth and competently written. The action is well conceived and executed, the central characters are compelling and well written, and it’s weirdly well directed for a mid budget LN adaptation too.
Feel free to post your 3x3s. Make em here if you don’t wanna use MS Paint or whatever else. It’s been a while since we last had a 3x3 topic itt and I’d love to see some of yours!

* these are strictly the shows that i think ar best. i don't really get the 'objective/subjective' thing. the thing i like best is the thing that is th ebest

FLCL - i love denpa shit and i think it's mostly Mamimi's fault; she might be my singular favorite character ever. anyway a lot of this feels like Evangelion but optimistic. it's a masterpiece of an animation exhibition but people often overlook FLCL's excellent writing because of it. it's a highly chaotic mesh of aesthetic, music, meta-narrative, main narrative but it all comes together for a story that tackles puberty like no other. there's so much you can take out of this show and for every person it'll be a different key. i've noticed that when FLCL hits for people, it really hits.

End of Evangelion - I had a big 'this edible aint shit' moment w/ this one. i was infatuated with the series but didn't get into this one until 3 weeks later i had a panic attack playing Minecraft at 5am thinking of this movie. it feels like a big bleak obliteration of the psyche that shreds you apart and leaves you on the least optimistic optimistic ending ever. i could write a million words about this - probably eventually will - but it's going to take a while before i can muster up the emotional strength to rewatch it

Spirited Away - i cry at every second of this movie because it's all just so gorgeous. the vibrant coloring, the level of detail in every background, the fluidity of the movement. every frame is treated as if it were the movie's most important moment. words can really not describe the beauty of the spirit world, but most impressive is the ethereally familiar vibe that lingers over it. maybe it's because i've watched it several times, but Spirited Away really captivates a lost nostalgia for me. as if like you were 8 years old and woke up at 10pm and walked in the living room filled with your parents and their friends. what sets this apart from the rest of Miyazaki's repertoire is Chihiro's growth, trying to find her place in a world that feels far too big for her, and eventually succeeding. she's a really affectionate main character more so than any of the other i've seen.

Ping Pong the Animation - legendary character drama w/ stunning freeform visuals. its artstyle is incredibly expressive allowing for both flowing ping pong matches as strong character moments. you could write an article about every single person in this series but even if you set the big thinking aside there's just a gripping drama about a boy learning to make the most of his talent. it never fails to make me cry at "The hero has no weakness."

Madoka Magica - this shit made me a girl. my gateway into anime etc etc. visually it's a masterpiece w really stageplay-like directing. its theatrics are nice as is the drama and gradual descent into despair. if pepole say this isn't "that well written" u just tell them to shut up because how many shows succeed at getting u so attached to five different characters in a mere 12 episodes. i love you happy birthday madoka

Demon Slayer - this is Battle Shonen refined to a tee. i joke a lot that this is just optimized Bleach but it holds true in a lot of faucets. it's a very drippy battle shonen but it carries extra emotional weight because the MC protects his sister instead of a romance interest. and she can fight!!! Demon Slayer is good at ridding everything that made shonen so annoying: no damsel-in-distress, no filler, no overload of uninteresting characters (the writer realized nobody liked seeing Arrancar 10 in Bleach so she killed off half of the 12 Kizuki). i'm so happy it blew up because i want it to influence the animescape to come

Baja no Studio: Baja no Mita Umi - i'm a sucker for really 'pure' stuff. in the sense that i like child-like optimism that believes the power of friendship can overcome even the wildest storms. the two Baja no Studio OVAs are exactly that, but Baja no Mita Umi adds another layer by upgrading its visuals. it's even prettier than Spirited Away... anyway part of why it's so emotional is because this was Yoshiji Kigami's last completed project before the KyoAni arson attack. it breaks my heart to think someone could do that to people who tried their best to put as much joy and healing in the world as KyoAni did/does. with that, every line about being friends together forever doubles like bittersweet meta commentary. i'm glad Baja no Mita Umi could be Kigami's last project, because it feels with it he says that even though he's not here anymore, he'll forever be together with us in the form of this gorgeous 30 minute movie

Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight - its mahou shoujo. its lesbian. need i say more? ok, if i do then let me talk about how you get so rapidly invested in its expansive cast without it ever sacrificing a second. it's exceedingly well-directed by an Ikuhara protege (and so a LOT of stageplay designs with meaningful symbolism) + it throws you a big fucking wrench halfway through that keeps you on the edge of your seat. and its lesbian as fuck

Haikyuu!! - typically i don't really like boys stuff but wow this is such an extremely well-directed sports shonen that balances the humor perfectly. it's easy to quickly get invested in every single one of these boys as they gradually improve. everyone in this series is just so damn likeable and i typically loathe anime boys if that doesnt speak volume to the character writing here idk what will convince u. but Susumu Mitsunaka delivered one of the most impressive directing performances of the whole decade w/ his team its just mwah smooch i love it

Hah, upon closer inspection this list is pretty normie, but I guess some of these shows are highly rated for a reason. Order of enjoyment goes from left to right, top to bottom.

1. Monster: I can barely even call this show anime. A beautifully written cat and mouse game in world not unlike our own. Some of the most well written and fully-developed characters of any anime I have ever seen. Side characters are developed past the point of leads in some shows I have watched. A slow burn that takes you on a journey unlike anything else you will find. Dr. Tenma is a fantastic character who feels extremely real. Starts out a little slow, but once it gets going, it is non-stop entertainment.

2. Code Geass: While I see many people complain about how ridiculous Lelouch and Suzaku are as characters, and how the show has so many unexplained loose ends, I raise them one point. This show is so damn entertaining. There is action around every corner, the animation is flashy, and the drama is well written and feels extremely real. The second season was a even better follow-up to a great show. Lelouch gets much further developed and does a lot of shit you wouldn't expect him to. So many thrilling twists and turns in this show, all the consequences of people's actions weigh very heavily. Amazing ending as well, not to spoil anything.

3. Hunter x Hunter: This is about as well as you can do a shounen in my opinion. A plethora a well crafted arcs that flow together very naturally. A vibrant cast of characters that are really easy to get attached to. A show that feels light-hearted at the beginning, but undergoes multiple tonal shifts for some of the best shounen arcs in any show (Yorknew & Chimera Ant). The show undermines shounen tropes by having the MC (Gon) fail a whole lot more than he succeeds. Fights in this show are well choreographed, involving a lot of strategy. Will be hard for any shounen to ever top this on my list.

4. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: This show here would be my second favorite shounen series, a close second to HxH. This show tops many lists and is consistently very highly rated for a reason. FMA:B has aged extremely well for something from 2009, animation is on par with some stuff coming out today. One of the best main/supporting casts of any show, with characters well fleshed out. Every episode in this show has meaning. Every scene adds to the larger, overarching plot. A lot of the pitfalls of long-running shounen shows like Naruto & Bleach are not present here. Ling Yao is one of my favorite supporting characters of all time, his presence adds a lot to the show, something I missed when going back and watching the original FMA anime.

5. Toradora!: Despite this list having only one rom-com, I actually really like the genre. Unfortunately, I have a hard time rating most of them very highly for a few reasons. Rom-coms tend to attract really boring/standard MCs for some reason. You know, the type of MC who is completely lifeless, and makes awful decisions for seemingly no reason? I hate that, despite it running rampant in rom-coms. Something else I can't stand is when two characters just start dating from episode two, with absolutely no backbone to their relationship, and lacking chemistry. Toradora! avoids all these pitfalls. The characters feel extremely real and have a ton of chemistry with each other. Series starts off light-hearted but gets much more serious and emotional as it goes along. Just a well written story where the relationship actually makes sense. Rewarding ending as well.

6. Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - II. Lost Butterfly: Holy shit. This right here is everything fate is meant to be. I'll avoid spoiling this movie, because anyone who has not seen this, needs to drop everything they are doing now and watch it. There is a reason HF is considered the best fate route. Heaven's Feel just feels so much more gritty than any other route. The characters all transcend to the point where they are unrecognizable from previous adaptations. For all the shit Shirou gets from fate fans, he is more than bearable here. The servants are done listening to their "masters". They do what they want, when they want, as they should. The animation from ufotable is godlike. The fight scenes from this movie might be some of the best pieces of animation I have ever seen. I am anxiously awating the final movie in the trilogy to be subbed so I can watch it. So damn good.

7. Attack on Titan: Season 3, Part 2: This was without question the best season of AoT released to date (final season pending). S3P2 manages to tie up everything from the previous three seasons in a nice little package for your viewing experience... and holy shit, it was amazing. Everything that happened in previous seasons all came to a head here, and I was not sorry that I binged this in one night. The character development of Erwin and Levi in this season was fantastic. Anyone who has not seen AoT needs to get themselves caught up for the final season in December.

8. Tower of God: This one is a lil' tough. I understand why this show got a lot of shit. The directing is pretty questionable at points. The narrative is a little choppy. Bam is a pretty lifeless and easy to hate MC. I don't disagree with any of that, but I still loved Tower of God. From the go, this show had huge scale, not unlike HxH. And maybe that was what drew me in, this show reminded me of one of the greatest shounens of all time. Aside from Bam, the main/supporting cast is very well written and fleshed out. The tests everyone endured were all extremely entertaining and had very high stakes. On another note, the art style of this anime is very unique (in a good way), and ToG was blessed to have Kevin Penkin on their payroll for this one. Despite its shortcomings, this show was incredibly enjoyable for me.

9. From the New World: I struggled with what to put on the tail end of this list. A lot of shows could have made the cut, but I decided to go with a show I feel does not get the love it deserves. You would be hard pressed to find a long list of anime with better character development than in this show. Over 25 episodes, the once innocent kids of Kamisu 66 are forced to grow up to face the reality of their world, and then they literally grow up. I am usually not a fan of little kid protagonists, but From the New World did it pretty well. The camping trip arc where the gradually begin uncovering how shitty their world is was a treat to watch. Really underrated show that everyone should at least give a go.

The Made in Abyss movie was everything I expected from a sequel. Amazing music, great characters, a huge sense of depth to the world, and of course a healthy dose of body horror that borders on fetishistic.

I finally got around to framing the animation cell I bought in Tokyo last year. It’s from Cardcaptor Sakura episode 43.

Unfortunately the genga was stuck to the ink when I bought it, otherwise I would’ve got it framed separately. You can see it’s slightly misaligned with the cell. Still a really cool thing to own though.
