Tournament Anything Goes Premier League V - Format Discussion

Not open for further replies.
Hi everyone! AGPL V is coming in the near future and we would like to hear input on the structure of the tour and tiers selected.

We would like to do something similar to last year - 6 teams, and 10 players minimum per team (8 starters + 2 subs) with 8 slots. There will be a 5-week round robin with the top team advancing straight to finals, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams play each other for the other spot.

Tentative Schedule

Manager Signups - 5th June
Player Signups - 12th June
Auction - 24th / 25th June
Week 1 - 26th June

Tiers

This year we are planning to pick the following slots:

- Multigen Bo3 (SV / SS / SM)
- SV AG
- SV AG
- SV AG
- SV AG / SS AG / Other**
- SS AG
- USUM AG
- ORAS AG

Every slot except the bolded one is pretty much locked. Here are the options for that slot:
- 4 SV slots work fine but oversaturate the tour with SV which may not be desirable to some.
- 2 SS slots is the main alternative to this but we were worried about the quality of games in this slot + that we're giving priority to SS over the other old gens for no real reason.
- Other formats that are being considered are DPP AG and Natdex AG DLC 1 but it's difficult to justify them over SV or SS. A Bo3 slot similar to last year (SS / SM / ORAS) or a Bo3 SV slot was also brought up. Lastly, some randomized slot was also being discussed last year which I thought was pretty interesting so I would like to see what people think of it this year.

Feel free to give input on what you'd like to see with this slot, or AGPL in general, such as retains, trades, all-star week, etc.

Like last year, AGPL will award a custom avatar this year as well!

This is what CHATGPT says!!!!
To make the tournament more interesting, you can consider adding a stipulation or an additional slot. Here are some suggestions:

1. "Restricted Team Composition" Slot: In this slot, you can introduce a stipulation where participants must build their teams with certain restrictions or guidelines. For example, you could limit the number of Legendary Pokémon allowed on each team, restrict the use of certain strategies, or require participants to include Pokémon from specific generations. This would add an extra layer of strategic planning and creativity to the tournament.

2. "Legacy" Slot: This slot could focus on a specific older generation or tier that hasn't been included in the main lineup. For example, you could introduce a slot dedicated to RBY (Red, Blue, Yellow) or GSC (Gold, Silver, Crystal) AG battles. This would provide an opportunity for participants to explore the origins of competitive Pokémon battling and showcase their skills in those specific metagames.

3. "Wildcard" Slot: Introduce a slot where participants can choose any format they desire, whether it's a different generation, a custom tier, or a unique rule set. This would allow players to bring their favorite format to the tournament and encourage diversity in team compositions and strategies.

4. "Limited Resources" Slot: In this slot, you can impose a restriction on the availability of certain Pokémon or items. For example, you could limit the number of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon allowed, restrict the use of specific held items, or create a draft format where participants have a limited pool of Pokémon to choose from. This would challenge participants to adapt their strategies and make the most of the limited resources available to them.

By incorporating one of these stipulations or adding an extra slot with a unique format, you can enhance the diversity and excitement of the tournament, providing participants with fresh challenges and encouraging them to think outside the box.
Personally i liked the "Limited Resources" one.
I personally think we should have 8 teams this year so that many new players can actually get the opportunity to play.

the cleanest choice is just a fourth sv slot, i understand this is also boring and a bit oversaturating but it makes the most sense as a contemporary gen that will also be brand-new due to the impending home release, and thus in need of experimentation & development

as the op states, double ss is odd. the metagame, while fairly competitive, is also very stale and frankly, boring to build / spectate and should logically not get preferential treatment over usum / oras: an oldgen is an oldgen

if we want more ss, it should come in the form of a bo3 ss / usm / oras slot. we have the starpower for such a slot (ice, bacon, fc & potential returning players like skarph / pg / cata) and this way, no oldgen gets preferential treatment. the downside is that having two bo3 slots is intensive for managers and involved players since its a pretty big commitment building-wise + it might sap away potential players from the 'actual' bo3 slot

gen 8 natdex ag dlc 1 is a clownish choice, not only is it a select time-window of a format that doesn't fall under ag's purview anymore, it's also hard to realize due to numerous obscure legality-based differences between dlc 1 and dlc 2 (eg. baton pass diancie is only legal in dlc 2). dlc 2 makes much more sense to include logistically, but is generally pretty detested for its matchup-based nature

dpp ag is something that keeps coming up prior to every teamtour, but gets shut down due to not really having a playerbase. leadership hasn't done much to change this so, as much as i personally would like to have it included, it realistically shouldn't be. we do have a dpp ag minitour coming up this year, so hopefully that will spur some growth before the next teamtour

a randomized slot is a cool idea, but it also makes drafting more difficult and unnecessarily convoluted since you have to draft someone that knows their stuff in all of sv / ss / usm / oras

tldr: the best option is 4 sv slots, the next logical one is dlc 2 gen 8 natdex ag but its far worse than the first option

Hello, after extensive discussions, we have reached a final decision regarding the 8 slots:

SV
SV
SV
SV
SS
SM
ORAS
Bo3 (SV/SS/SM)

We believe that allocating the fourth slot to SV is the most reasonable choice compared to other options. Our intention is to encourage individuals to engage with and construct strategies within the new SV meta.

Manager signups will go up tomorrow!
