Arctozolt [QC 1/2]

Mariannabelle

chill guy
[OVERVIEW]

In hail, Arctozolt distinguishes itself as a monster capable of outspeeding the unboosted metagame, landing mind-boggling KOs with its fearsome STAB options including Bolt Beak, which will casually OHKO many neutral targets, including Tauros and even uninvested Copperajah. Icicle Crash completes the STAB BoltBeam combo, ensuring that Grass-types like Rotom-C, Dragon-types like Dragalge, and Ground-types like Flygon are KOed after little or no prior damage. However, the sweep ends when the hail stops, as Arctozolt's average bulk is supported by a bad defensive typing with a plethora of weaknesses and mediocre resistances; between that and its low Speed, a sea of Pokemon like Salazzle, Sirfetch'd, and Exploud will KO Arctozolt. In addition, common Choice Scarf users like Flygon will outspeed and KO Arctozolt, hail or no hail. Further, Arctozolt's sweeping is hindered by mediocre hail setters and by the difficulty of getting Arctozolt into battle safely.

[SET]
name: Hail Attacker
move 1: Bolt Beak
move 2: Icicle Crash
move 3: Blizzard
move 4: Hail / Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Slush Rush
nature: Naive
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Details
====

Blizzard has the best mileage against certain physically defensive Pokemon, such as Mudsdale and Vileplume, having a fair chance to OHKO either after hazard damage. In the last moveslot, Arctozolt can opt to set Hail for itself; otherwise, it can use Protect to scout the moves of Pokemon like Choice Scarf Flygon and to block First Impression from Sirfetch'd. A Speed-boosting Nature is needed so that Arctozolt under Hail can get the drop on Choice Scarf versions of Pokemon like Passimian and even Rotom-C.

Arctozolt needs partners that can set Hail for it; users like Dragalge and Vaporeon have good type synergy with Arctozolt and can even pivot out with Flip Turn. Arctozolt cannot OHKO Mudsdale with Blizzard or outspeed Choice Scarf Flygon, so Arctozolt appreciates partners that can deal with their STAB attacks, such as Rotom-C and Dhelmise; these Pokemon can also remove entry hazards, which is important as long as Arctozolt opts for Life Orb over Heavy-Duty Boots. Arctozolt works well with other Slush Rush users like Arctovish and Sandslash-Alola, as they share many checks and can pick up the sweep for each other if a member faints.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====

Volt Absorb Arctozolt can be used on non-Hail teams, as Bolt Beak backed up by Ice STAB moves is still capable of threatening slower builds with the likes of Vaporeon, Copperajah, and Dragalge, and Arctozolt gains a useful immunity to Electric moves this way. However, this kind of set misses out on a lot of potential, as Pokemon that would otherwise be KOed in Hail will be KOing Arctozolt instead.

Checks and Counters
====

**Revenge Killers**: If Hail isn't up, then Arctozolt's typing leaves it open to being KOed by the STAB moves or coverage of many faster targets, such as Tauros, Sirfetch'd, or Salazzle. Some Pokemon, such as Ninjask and Choice Scarf users like Flygon and Heliolisk, can boost clean through Arctozolt's Speed advantage even in Hail.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: While many of them do not want to switch directly into Bolt Beak, Pokemon like Diancie and Bronzong can stay in to take a hit and retaliate with moves like Body Press. Mudsdale has the added benefit of deterring Bolt Beak, and, with some investment in Special Defense, can take one Blizzard to KO Arctozolt with Earthquake.

Mariannabelle The QC team agreed that Arctozolt's Volt Absorb set is too niche in comparison to its Slush Rush set. This analysis would have to be swapped with the hail sweeping set first and the Volt Absorb one only mentioned as an OO.
This would be the set:
Arctozolt @ Life Orb
Ability: Slush Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Bolt Beak
- Icicle Crash
- Blizzard
- Protect / Hail

Let us know if you have any questions or concerns and I'll give this a QC once this is ready again.

[OVERVIEW]

In Hail, Arctozolt distinguishes itself as a monster capable of outspeeding the unboosted metagame, landing mind-boggling KOs with its fearsome STAB options including Bolt Beak, which doubles in power if Arctozolt moves first (Fluff; instead list examples of OHKOes). (Move the bolt beak and icicle crash sentences from the set details to here. STAB attacks don't need sentences in the set details, as that's fluff. Instead, try to redirect your first sentence + those STAB sentences to show off zolt's power in hail and what targets it can KO and sweep past.) However, the fun (little too informal. Maybe say the sweep ends?) ends when the Hail stops, as Arctozolt's average bulk is supported by a bad defensive typing with a plethora of weaknesses and mediocre resistances; between that and its low Speed, a sea of Pokemon are capable of threatening to like Salazzle, Sirfetch'd, and Exploud KO Arctozolt (Examples, brevity). In addition, common Choice Scarf users like Flygon will outspeed and KO Arctozolt, Hail or no Hail. (Also end with mentioning that hail is very niche due to mediocre hail setters and how Arctozolt's frailty makes it hard to get into play in the first place)

When under Hail, Arctozolt's Bolt Beak backed up by Life Orb will casually OHKO many neutral targets, including Tauros and even uninvested Copperajah. Icicle Crash completes the STAB BoltBeam combo, ensuring that Grass-types like Rotom-C, Dragon-types like Dragalge, and Ground-types like Flygon are KOed after little or no prior damage (See above). Blizzard is used mainly for Mudsdale, and has perfect accuracy under Hail (Mudsdale isn't OHKOed by Blizzard. Instead, stress "doing more damage to physical walls like Mudsdale and Vileplume and can OHKO the latter after Stealth Rock") .

(mention other hail sweepers like Arctovish and Alolan Sandslash to wear down shared checks and sweep together)

**Faster Pokemon Revenge Killers (more accurate)**: If Hail isn't up, then Arctozolt's typing leaves it open to being KOed by the STAB moves or coverage of many faster targets, such as Tauros with Close Combat, Sirfetch'd, and or Salazzle with Flamethrower.

QC 1/2! Weather is not capitalized, so change Hail to hail. Good work, sorry for the rewrite but this looks pretty good!

Archiving this thread because the new VR update made Arctozolt unviable. Mari, if Arctozolt ever reappears on NU's VR, then we can revive this thread for you if you wish to continue.
