hello smogon!!

i've been meaning to create this thread for a while, as the subject matter has continued to grow near and dear to my heart over time!

TATTOOS

this article does a great job at saying most of what I would want to say on the topic as an intro, but I'll include the first thing you need to know here:

"Tattoos are permanent markings on the skin made by way of ink and needles.
Once the ink is deposited into the second layer of skin known as the dermis,
the wound scabs over and the skin heals to expose a design under the new layer."

there's no denying it: getting a tattoo is painful!! inked art on our bodies can look so incredible, but it is totally valid being unable to achieve a vision if the pain is too much. a friend of mine had a huge virgin Mary piece that was only outlined on her stomach for several years, because tattooing over the abdomen is miserable. but, she finished eventually!!! and if she never did, who cares!

tattoos are for you, regardless of what anyone else says. so let's review tattoo etiquette on and off this thread:
  • DO NOT TOUCH ANOTHER PERSON'S TATTOO WITHOUT THAT PERSON'S CONSENT.
I don't know what it is about people having tattoos on their skin, but sometimes people interpret this as an open invitation to grab your tattooed body part and examine it. This is never, ever okay. Unless you say so! Despite you using your body as a canvas and art piece, and you going out and existing in this world, this does not mean your body has any less autonomy, nor does it mean that you are public property available for scrutiny any more than a non-tattooed person. This has happened to me a few times, and it's jarring every single time. Usually old women, but that's my experience! (I think narrow minded-people in general are the most "impressed" by such radical acts as tattooing, which causes them to lose all common sense when they lunge at you to look at your ink)

  • DO NOT PRY INTO WHY SOMEONE GOT THEIR TATTOO.
This should be self-explanatory. Same way you wouldn't ask someone why their face looks the way it does, if someone doesn't offer the background of their tattoo on their own, don't go snooping! Lots of people could be embarrassed at a bad tattoo, or they've chosen to get an image on them to express a feeling they'd rather not express vocally. Maybe the tattoo is still new so they're sick and tired of explaining why they got it, having answered the same question several times already. All of that to say again, people get tattoos for themselves, not you!—please respect the information people choose to share with you about themselves.

  • DO NOT ASK TO SEE SOMEONE'S TATTOO(S).
This rule is more for IRL, but applies here too. Regardless of your best intentions, it's inherently rude to stop someone and ask that they take the time to show you more of their body for no better reason than you wanting to see it. I think people's brains don't interpret tattooed skin the same way, only in that it doesn't register as skin on some basic biological level, so for whatever reason the fact that it is still attached to your body doesn't phase people when they stop to make demands about you showing them your body, or allowing them to touch your body. All of this sounds crazy to do if it didn't involve tattoos, right? So, it's just as uncomfortable when tattoos are involved! Respect people's bodies!
tattoos are amazingly fun expressions of self, so PLEASE absorb the fun ways you should use this thread after adhering to the rules!!:

  • SHARE PHOTOS OF YOUR TATTOO/TATTOO IDEAS!
This could be a tattoo you just got at the shop, an image that inspires your tattoo idea, or it could be the first tattoo you ever got years ago. Please share!! Tattoos have existed for ages throughout several cultures, and it's incredible to see the different styles of tattoo out there based on country or region. I want to get tattooed in another country but haven't yet. ( **The only rule I'll add here likely already exists for smogon dot com, which is no explicit content! use [spoiler tags and your best judgement when posting potentially suggestive images as they may or may not be deleted at mod discretion.**) Also, feel free to blur or otherwise cover any part of your image that you don't want displayed to preserve your privacy when showing off your ink. That's all we want to see in this thread: tattoos and tattoo inspirations! ((please also share images of existing tattoos available to you that you like, even if you don't intend to get the tattoo yourself! you might inspire someone else~))

  • PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS!
I grew up hearing that tattoos hurt the worst over certain parts of the body, and have found my own experiences to differ in some cases. Some assessments are spot on (the abdomen is the hell-dimension for tattoos!!!) but everyone's experience is ultimately unique. And it's not just about pain! Please ask questions about preparing for a tattoo, aftercare, experiences with tattoos healing, etc. Anything you might want to ask about tattoos or getting them—do it! I will do my best to answer questions from my personal experiences (I have uhhh 8 tattoo visits?? so far hehe) but I encourage anyone to share their own anecdotal advice, or any vetted sources of information they want to provide to help answer a query. A popular misconception for instance, is that melanated skin (highly pigmented/containing more melanin/darker) cannot take colored ink. Fortunately for eyeballs everywhere, this is beautifully false.

  • TALK ABOUT TATTOOS!
I mean, this is the thread to do it in, right? Please also feel free to discuss what constitutes a bad tattoo, as it is a painful and expensive process to get something removed (literally lasers). Typically a tattoo is only bad if the person whose body it resides on decides that it's bad, but there are certain things you can be mindful to AVOID in your tattoo venture. I'd have to google the timeline for this, but (hopefully) all tattoo shops nowadays have an explicit line on the tattoo agreement that you initial, wherein you UNDERSTAND THAT THE SPELLING OF YOUR TATTOO IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!! Imagine if your "based" tattoo comes out a bit too "bassed." Crazier things have happened! Any reputable tattoo shop will put a stencil of your intended tattoo on your skin, this has always been purple in my experience. Trust the stencil—this is harder than the tattoo in most cases. The tattooing is just the act of tracing the stencil after it's been applied to your skin. Whatever the stencil looks like is what your tattoo will look like! Don't be afraid to ask them to reposition the stencil—I have done this twice, and was both times happy I did! They just rub it off with a few swipes of alcohol and try again.
I could talk about tattoos forever... probably why I made this thread... .... hmmm... !!

the secret to my high volume of parlor visits is that most of my tattoos are tiiiiny

this will eventually be covered up with a newer tattoo idea. it might have just dawned on me who should be the one to tattoo it, too. i love when that happens!!! this was 1 of 2 tattoos i had started trying to get lasered off. a GOOD place that does this would have obliterated this smudge of ink in one session, but this is the appearance after 3. do more research than i did!!!

it is what you think it is! good ol' FF symbol. the little bit of negative space really does it for me. and i like triangles. minimalism. base of my throat: this way i trick the eye into thinking i'm always wearing a choker of sorts. also it didn't hurt!

i find my tiny tat sessions soothing more often than not... the "X" tattoo actually had me dozing off, despite the action of the needle right by my eardrum! woops!

this one is more emotional. a) i'm in love with SZA, full stop. and 2,) i was in a bad relationship before where i was pressured to bomb a hill on a longboard despite my protests both inside and out! this resulted in me breaking my wrist. it wasn't a bad break, just a fracture, but the type it was required surgery!!! this infuriated me. ultimately i was upset at myself for doing something i hadn't been comfortable doing, and then injuring myself. forfeiting my control and directly suffering for it. i had to wear a sling followed by a to-my-elbow hard cast for a collective 3 months. this drove me fucking nuts. i am an incredibly tactile person, so literally having one of my arms disabled was a nightmare!!

the day i got my arm back was similarly: fucking nuts. i felt like superman. anyway, I got "CTRL" over the faint scar on my wrist where i was sliced open for surgery, a reminder of a crucial time in my life where I relinquished control and it was a bad time. SZA knows whats up.

Got this one many moons ago on my 18th birthday while blackout drunk. Don't regret a thing.

At the time of getting that tat, there was no sentimental significance beyond 'it looks cool' but over the years it's evolved into something I treasure and think of as an integral part of me.

Been wanting to get some more ink for a while, probably the muted post horn from The Crying of Lot 49, one of my favourite books.

I've been putting it off though as I'm not sure where on my body I'd want it.

i want this artist to tattoo me, but i haven't quite decided what i want put on me yet....

i'm obsessed with the simplicity of lines, so once i found this artist it blew my proverbial top off, and i was hooked scrolling through all the fantastic work he's done! his whole shtick is truly appreciating your body and the way it is shaped when he applies his ink, which is how i imagine he captures such smooth looking lines on such an uneven, malleable surface!!!! each of his tattoos are truly works of art

their instagram is called @dotstolines and they frequently travel between Berlin, Germany and Los Angeles, CA/USA!

hi!!

finally took a good picture of my (biiig) tattoo as best i could teehee, it wraps around my torso and all around my right arm/shoulder so this is the best i could do to capture the majority of it in one frame~
tattooooo.jpg

one of my favorite things about this tattoo is that the clouds aren't filled in entirely!!! so even though the tattoo has "claimed" those parts of my body for the interior of the clouds, it's a negative space vibe because it's still my bare skin. also, if the clouds were colored in along the way i probably would have only had like, half as many finished in the same amount of time. during that 8th hour i was in pretty constant pain regardless of where the needle was!!! but sooo worth it. the art style is definitely japanese inspired, too!

My second (and third) tattoos, my grandparents names as a reminder of them and my happy childhood.

Andd my first, the purple ribbon for my epilepsy and Carpe Diem rather than seize the day because latin is so much classier. Has ended up a little more faded than I’d hoped and the colour isn’t even throughout (though perhaps some of that could be due to my somewhat negligent aftercare at that age). Have thought about getting it touched up maybe but have other things to spend money on at the moment.

Sorry for how long I took Fishy but as promised, tattoo pics!

Taking a photo of all 7 tattoos individually is gonna be a pain in the arse, so I'm gonna just post three photos to try and cover all my ink.

the ribs definitely had to hurt the most right?? i feel like the belly/chest must be so sensitive since some of the skin there is especially soft >_<

there's a certain satisfaction to getting all sorts of different tattoos but all in black ink, something classic about it i think is what it is

i think i like your chest/arm progression the most because i really like wrapping tattoos that span two or more body parts, but not in a totally-encompassing way (kind of like my clouds hehe) ((thank you for sharing!!!))

The ribs were brutal, especially because at the time of that tattoo I had hip problems, so I was getting smashed by both the tattoo pain and the pain from having to lie on my injured hip for hours!

Thank you! Chest arm progression is definitely my favourite part because it just kind of happened organically like that. My first tattoo was the mountain and phoenix on my right bicep / shoulder, and then my next 4 tattoos all flowed from there.

It's only the last two tattoos (ravens on my ribs and script under my left pec) that haven't fit with that, but I plan to get my right tricep done later this year too so tattoo #8 will flow with the first five.

Love your clouds by the way, they're very well done!

PS definitely a fan of the classic black aesthetic, but with different variations. One of my tattoos (Mjolnir at the bottom of my bicep / top of my forearm) is almost entirely dot work for instance!

I finally got this one done the other day, slightly different design, hand drawn as opposed to geometric. Very pleased with the results

Spirited Away is my favorite movie of all time and got me through extremely dark times in my life. Chihiro's courage is very inspiring and I love the movie's aesthetic and score so I decided to get her tatted on me as a birthday gift for myself this March.

I found the drawing on imgur some years back and found it to be really cool, cleaned it up in photoshop, and just saved it. I hadn't really planned to do anything with it back then, but now it helped me decide on what I wanted to get as my first tattoo.
