UU Az's Elf [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Azelf is a premier offensive threat in the current UU metagame due to its elite Speed, high Special Attack, and large movepool. U-turn and Knock Off make it a great offensive pivot that cripples checks like Mandibuzz and Chansey, while coverage moves like Flamethrower, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow it to threaten staples like Celesteela, Slowking, and Hydreigon. Meanwhile, Nasty Plot Azelf is a dangerous wallbreaker that threatens specially defensive Pokemon like Chansey, Celesteela, and Assault Vest Tangrowth. It's fast enough to outspeed and KO many other speedy Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego, only being naturally outsped by Noivern, Crobat, and the niche Salazzle. Though Azelf is powerful, its frailty means that it has to pivot out or make outright KOs if it wants to last long-term. Common Choice Scarf users like Hydreigon and Diggersby can KO or use U-turn against Azelf. Azelf also takes considerable damage from priority attacks such as Lycanroc-D's Accelerock and Scizor's Bullet Punch. Azelf's great coverage is limited by its moveslots, as a pivot set will have to often choose between Knock Off for support, Energy Ball to threaten Hippowdon, Swampert, and Primarina, and Dazzling Gleam to better handle Dark-types like Hydreigon and Mandibuzz. Nasty Plot faces a similar conundrum, often choosing between Energy Ball and Dazzling Gleam. Thundurus-T gives Azelf stiff competition as both an offensive pivot and a Nasty Plot sweeper. While Azelf is faster and is better equipped to handle threats like Nihilego, Thundurus-T has a better defensive typing, higher Special Attack, and Electric-type STAB moves for threatening common defensive Pokemon that Azelf struggles to beat like Mandibuzz and Slowking.

[SET]
name: Pivot
move 1: Psychic
move 2: Flamethrower
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Knock Off / Energy Ball / Dazzling Gleam
item: Heavy-Duty Boots / Expert Belt
ability: Levitate
nature: Naive
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Psychic is Azelf's strongest and usually preferred STAB move, dealing big damage to the likes of Thundurus-T and Amoonguss, but Psyshock is an option to OHKO Nihilego and deal more damage to Tentacruel and Calm Mind users like Primarina and Keldeo. Flamethrower hits a wide range of defensive Pokemon like Scizor, Skarmory, and Tangrowth, while Fire Blast is a stronger option to help finish off Celesteela and Tangrowth, but the difference in damage is often not worth the accuracy drop. U-turn is Azelf's key move on this set, as its high Speed allows it to pivot out of danger from Pokemon like Mandibuzz and bring in a teammate safely. Knock Off is the preferred final move to remove items from common switch-ins such as Chansey and Mandibuzz. Energy Ball is an alternative to better threaten Pokemon like Slowking, Hippowdon, and Mamoswine. Dazzling Gleam is an option for Dragon-types and bulky Dark-types like Hydreigon, Salamence, Mandibuzz, and Umbreon. Heavy-Duty Boots can be used to avoid Stealth Rock chip damage throughout the battle. Expert Belt should be used with Energy Ball or Dazzling Gleam to give Azelf a good chance of OHKOing Pokemon like Mamoswine with Energy Ball and Tangrowth with Flamethrower, as well as 2HKOing Slowking with Energy Ball and Mandibuzz with Dazzling Gleam. Naive is the preferred nature, as the loss in Special Defense barely affects Azelf and maintaining chip damage from U-turn and Knock Off can be beneficial. Timid is also an option if you drop Knock Off and are not concerned about U-turn chip damage. 4 Defense EVs ensure Azelf takes a Thousand Arrows from Zygarde-10%.

This set fits best on fast-paced balance and offense teams, where its pivot support can assist in getting other hard-hitting Pokemon like Mamoswine onto the field. Azelf is already a strong offensive presence, but wallbreakers like Keldeo, Hydreigon, Conkeldurr, and Mamoswine overwhelm shared checks such as Slowking, Chansey, and Mandibuzz. Stealth Rock setters like Nihilego and Spikes users like Skarmory put even more stress on the opposing team. Nihilego also can pressure Mandibuzz and wear down Slowking. Excadrill compresses setting and removing entry hazards, enabling Expert Belt Azelf to come in and break through the enemy team more easily. Azelf works best in combination with other pivots such as Zarude; Azelf threatens Zarude's Grass-type checks, and Zarude beats special walls like Slowking. Thundurus-T can pivot while also beating Mandibuzz and Slowking, while Slowking can be used as a slower, defensive pivot to bring in Azelf against Pokemon like Tangrowth. Knock Off absorbers like Tangrowth and Amoonguss help Azelf escape dangerous Pokemon like Thundurus-T, Scizor, and Azumarill, while Azelf can threaten Steel-types like Skarmory and Celesteela. These teammates also help against most Choice Scarf U-turn users like Zarude. Primarina can handle many threats to Azelf, including Mandibuzz and Choice Scarf Hydreigon, while Azelf can threaten Grass-types. In addition to Primarina, bulky Pokemon like Slowking and Salamence can make up for Azelf's frailty by defensively answering threats to it.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Psyshock
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Energy Ball / Dazzling Gleam
item: Expert Belt / Life Orb
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

+2 Azelf can dismantle nearly the entire tier, depending on what coverage moves it chooses. Psyshock is usually preferred for STAB to OHKO Nihilego and Tentacruel before a boost and better threaten Chansey and Calm Mind Primarina. However, Psychic is an option to do more neutral damage to Pokemon like Salamence and Mamoswine if Azelf is not running super effective coverage for them. Fire Blast covers Grass-types like Tangrowth and Steel-types like Celesteela, OHKOing all after Nasty Plot. Azelf's other coverage depends on the team's needs. Energy Ball is an option for Swampert, Hippowdon, and Slowking. Dazzling Gleam hits Dark- and Dragon-types like Hydreigon, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, and Salamence. Expert Belt is usually the preferred item on this set, as it allows Azelf to fire off attacks without consequence while still dealing enough damage to OHKO defensive Pokemon like Celesteela after Nasty Plot. Life Orb can be used for even more damage, in particular against Pokemon Azelf lacks coverage for like Chansey and Hatterene. Unfortunately, Life Orb wears down Azelf fairly quickly and leaves it susceptible to priority attacks like Bullet Punch from Scizor and Aqua Jet from Azumarill.

This set fits best on hyper offense teams, whose teammates can support Azelf. An entry hazard setter like Scolipede helps facilitate an Azelf sweep, and Excadrill can both set hazards and remove them. Azelf is naturally fast, but a Sticky Web setter like Ribombee invalidates Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Zarude, letting Azelf easily sweep most teams. Sticky Web also allows Azelf to attack Starmie and Zygarde-10% without risking a Speed tie. Strong physical sweepers, like Gyarados and Diggersby, can work as secondary sweepers against teams that carry multiple stops to Azelf. Azelf can set up on most checks to these physical sweepers, including Tangrowth and Skarmory. A wallbreaker like Mamoswine can break through many checks to Azelf, such as Mandibuzz and Chansey, to allow Azelf to more easily sweep. Thundurus-T can also help threaten Pokemon like Mandibuzz, as Azelf struggles to break through it even with Dazzling Gleam. Nihilego can serve as a secondary sweeper with Meteor Beam and important coverage in moves such as Sludge Wave and Thunderbolt, while Azelf can assist in removing or weakening Nihilego's checks like Slowking, Chansey, and Jirachi.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Choice Band set takes advantage of Azelf's high Attack stat to act as an incredibly strong pivot with U-turn, Knock Off, and solid options in Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick. While this can be effective on some teams, other Choice Band users like Zygarde-10% and Zarude offer more spammable high-power attacks in Thousand Arrows and STAB Darkest Lariat. Choice Scarf can be used to surprise other Choice Scarf users like Zarude and Jirachi, as well as faster threats like Crobat. However, this set is very situational and will oftentimes not have much utility compared to other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi, which can spam Iron Head and use Healing Wish in addition to pivoting. Azelf is also naturally fast and doesn't need Choice Scarf to outspeed most unboosted foes. Azelf can act as a Stealth Rock setter, but it should only be used if the team has no other viable options. While Azelf also gets Taunt to prevent Defog, the prevalence of Pokemon like Excadrill that can both spin on Azelf, threaten it with Earthquake thanks to Mold Breaker, and also set up Stealth Rock itself, makes Stealth Rock Azelf less optimal. A Pokemon like Cobalion, Nihilego, or the aforementioned Excadrill is generally a better option for setting up Stealth Rock.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Pokemon like Umbreon and Mandibuzz stop most Azelf sets and can easily threaten to KO it in return, although having their item removed with Knock Off makes them much less effective in their defensive roles. More offensive Pokemon like Choice Scarf Zarude and Hydreigon outspeed and OHKO Azelf, and Hydreigon can also switch into non-Pivot Azelf if it is not running Dazzling Gleam.

**Faster Threats and Priority**: Choice Scarf users such as Zarude, Hydreigon, Jirachi, and Diggersby deal significant damage to Azelf with U-turn or simply OHKO it with a strong attack. Noivern, Crobat, and Salazzle outspeed Azelf naturally and also threaten heavy damage. Priority move users like Scizor, Mamoswine, and Azumarill can pick off a chipped Azelf.

**Special Walls**: Pokemon with high Special Defense like Chansey, Celesteela, Hippowdon, and Slowking can withstand Azelf's attacks and hinder it with chip damage or status, and Chansey and Slowing can often use Teleport to bring in an offensive check. However, the former two hate Knock Off and the latter three fear coverage options like Flamethrower and Energy Ball. Even Chansey is 2HKOed by +2 Psyshock with Life Orb.

- Azelf is a premier offensive threat in the current UU metagame due to its elite Speed, high Attack and Special Attack, and access to a large movepool.
- Moves like U-Turn and Knock Off allow Azelf to function as a great pivot support option, crippling checks like Mandibuzz and Chansey, while coverage moves like Flamethrower, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow it to threaten nearly many UU threats likes Celesteela, Slowking, and Hydreigon for Super Effective damage.
-bring up nasty plot set as a scary wallbreaker that can beat chansey, Celesteela, and AV tang at +2
- Only Salazzle and the niche Noivern niche options like Salazzle and Noivern (salazzle is set to rise higher this VR update, niche undersells it) are naturally faster than Azelf, and its Speed tier allows it to outspeed and KO other speedy Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego.
- While Azelf is powerful, it's also frail. Most attacks from any decently strong Pokemon will significantly damage Azelf, meaning it has to either KO its opponent or U-Turn away to last.
- Common Choice Scarf users like Hydreigon Zarude and Jirachi can KO or U-Turn out from Azelf, causing major damage while doing so. scarf hydra is more common than zarude, also bring up vulnerability to priority
- Azelf's great coverage is also limited by its moveslots, as a pivot set will have to often choose between Knock Off for support, Energy Ball to threaten Mamoswine, Swampert and Primarina, or Dazzling Gleam to better handle Dark-types like Hydreigon and Mandibuzz. Other sets like Nasty Plot face the same conundrum, often choosing between Energy Ball and Dazzling Gleam for the same reasons.
- Thundurus-T gives Azelf stiff competition as both an offensive pivot and a Nasty Plot sweeper. While Azelf is faster and better equipped to handle threats like Nihilego, Thundurus-T's access to Electric-type STAB gives it a large advantage over otherwise stubborn Pokemon in the tier like Galarian Moltres and Slowking that Azelf fails to threaten even with Super Effective coverage. I'd say it's more along the lines of better bulk, higher special attack, and typing for why thundurus can be better over azelf, be sure to reflect this instead

Paragraph 1 (mention Timid, Psyshock, and TwistedSpoon)
- Psychic is Azelf's strongest and preferred STAB move, dealing big damage to the likes of Thundurus-T and Amoonguss, but Psyshock is an option to OHKO Nihilego and deal better damage to Tentacruel and Calm Mind boosters like Primarina and Keldeo.
- Flamethrower covers a wide range of stubborn defensive Pokemon like Aegislash, Skarmory and Tangrowth.
- U-Turn is Azelf's key move here, as its high Speed stat allows it to pivot out of danger from Pokemon like Galarian Moltres and bring in a teammate. or simply Pivot to gain momentum generally.
- For the final moveslot, Knock Off is preferred as the better support move to remove items from common switch-ins like Chansey. emphasize how knock off is typically 4th on boots sets, while energy ball or dazzling gleam are better for expert belt
- Energy Ball can be moved as an alternative to Knock Off to better threaten Pokemon like Slowking, Swampert and Mamoswine.
- Dazzling Gleam is an option for better coverage against Pokemon like Hydreigon and Salamence, but bulky Dark-types like Mandibuzz and Galarian Moltres will easily withstand a hit and threaten Azelf in return.
- Heavy-Duty Boots can be used on any Azelf pivot set to avoid Stealth Rock chip keep it healthy throughout battle, but Expert Belt in combination with a third coverage move allows Azelf to hit a large portion of the tier extremely hard, giving it a good chance to OHKO Pokemon like Mamoswine with Energy Ball and Tangrowth with Flamethrower. bring up 2HKOing physically defense slowking
- Naive is the preferred nature, as the loss in Special Defense barely affects Azelf and the increase chip damage from U-Turn and Knock Off can be more beneficial against Zarude. Timid is also an option if you drop Knock Off and are not concerned much with U-Turn chip damage.

Paragraph 2
- This set fits best on fast paced balance or offense teams where the pivot support can aid in getting other hard hitters like Mamoswine on the field.
- Azelf is already a strong offensive presence, but a wallbreaker like Aegislash, Diggersby or the aforementioned Mamoswine can work in conjunction with Azelf to dent the majority of the opponent's defensive backbone. be specific, say how they can beat and overwhelm stuff like chansey umbreon and mandibuzz that beat azelf together
- A hazard setter like Nihilego for Stealth Rock or Skarmory and Roserade for Spikes puts more stress on the opposing team to withstand Azelf's continued attacks. bring up exca who's role compression with spin lets it run expert belt without fear of rocks chip
- Azelf best works in combination with another pivot such as Zarude, as both Pokemon can support each other and bring in Azelf against Grass-types that stop Zarude, or Zarude in on Special walls like Slowking. bring up thundurus-t who can beat mandibuzz and slowking for it as another pivot
- Azelf's ability to threaten defensive Pokemon like Skarmory and Tangrowth make it a great teammate for a Pokemon like Conkeldurr or Zygarde-10% that otherwise struggle to break through these
. feels repetitive to the earlier wallbreaker point, I'd cut it and replace diggersby with conk
- A Knock Off absorber like Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu, or Amoonguss helps Azelf escape dangerous Pokemon like Krookodile, Crawdaunt, and Azumarill, and Azelf can also threaten Steel-types like Aegislash and Celesteela that normally would stop these same teammates. These teammates also help against most Choice Scarf U-Turn users like Zarude and Jirachi that Azelf must switch away from in battle.
- On a bulky offense build, a Pokemon like Primarina can handle many threats to Azelf, including Galarian Moltres and Mandibuzz, while Azelf can threaten Grass-types for Primarina. I'd expand on this by saying how Pokemon like Primarina, slowking, and salamence make up for azelf's shortcomings by defensively answering threats to it

Paragraph 1
- Azelf can dismantle nearly the entire tier after one Nasty Plot, depending on what its coverage moves are.
- Psychic is Azelf's strongest attack and will still easily KO Specially Defensive Pokemon like Nihilego and Tentacruel after one Nasty Plot boost.
- Psyshock can be used over Psychic to be able to OHKO Nihilego before a boost, as well as better threaten Chansey and Calm Mind Primarina. switch these two to reflect change in slash order
- Fire Blast covers Grass-types like Tangrowth and Steel-types like Aegislash and Celesteela, OHKOing all both after a Nasty Plot.
- For the last slot, what Azelf uses depends on what the rest of the team needs covered. Energy Ball is an option for Swampert and Slowking, while Dazzling Gleam hits Dark- and Dragon-types like Hydreigon, Galarian Moltres, and Salamence.
- Expert Belt is the preferred item here, as it allows Azelf to fire off attacks without consequence while still dealing enough damage to OHKO defensive Pokemon like Celesteela after one Nasty Plot.
- Life Orb can be used for even more damage, in particular against Pokemon which Azelf lacks coverage movees for like Chansey and Hatterene. bring up downside of getting worn down and vulnerable to priority

Paragraph 2
- This set fits best on Hyper Offense teams that can support Azelf.
- Stealth Rock or Spikes damage helps facilitate an Azelf sweep, and a setter like Excadrill can both set hazards and remove them. since you say spikes I'd bring up suicide lead scolipede here
- Azelf is naturally fast, but a Sticky Web setter like Ribombee allows Azelf to no longer fear Choice Scarf users (like? Give examples. Also say how it no longer risks a speed tie with zydog) and easily sweep most teams completely after a Nasty Plot boost.
- A strong physical sweeper like Gyarados and Swords Dance Aegislash can work as a secondary sweeper for teams that carry multiple stops to Azelf, such as Chansey.
- A wallbreaker like Mamoswine can also break through many checks to Azelf, such as Mandibuzz and Chansey, to allow Azelf to more easily sweep.
- Thundurus-T can also help threaten Pokemon like Galarian Moltres and Mandibuzz, as Azelf struggles to break through these even with Dazzling Gleam.
- Nihilego is also a good teammate as it can offer Stealth Rock support or serve as a secondary sweeper with diversified coverage for the team.

- Choice Band takes advantage of Azelf's high Attack stat to act as an incredibly strong pivot with U-Turn and Knock Off. Azelf can also run moves like Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick to round off coverage well. While this can be effective on some teams, another Choice Band user like Zygarde-10% offers more spammable coverage in Thousand Arrows.

- Choice Scarf can also be used to surprise other Choice Scarf users like Zarude and Jirachi as well as faster threats like Salazzle, dealing decent damage with U-Turn or Knock Off respectively. While this is effective against these types of foes, as well as against faster Pokemon like Salazzle, it is very situational and will oftentimes not have much utility compared to other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi which can spam Iron Head and use Healing Wish in addition to pivoting. made it less wordy. I would also note azelf is just naturally fast enough to not really need a choice scarf and the other sets are better

- Azelf can act as a Stealth Rock setter, but this should only be used if the team has no other viable options to set up rocks. While Azelf also gets Taunt to prevent Defog, the prevalence of Pokemon like Excadrill make a classic lead Azelf less optimal.

- Yo check this out - Grassy Seed w/ Recycle + Calm Mind + Draining Kiss + Stored Power LOL would you hit it?

- Alright how about this: Dual Screens w/o Light Clay and then explode to set up an auto-win with GMolt.

- Thunder Wave support on pivot set? Anyone try that yet?

- Sunny Day back-up setter - I've seen this one be used on ladder actually.

- Adrenaline Orb is always a classic one. Actually saw tour usage in early 2021 circuit!

- Power Up Punch, Knock Off, and Last Resort. I call this one Fred the Azelf.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Pokemon like Mandibuzz and Galarian Moltres stop most iterations of Azelf and can easily threaten to KO it in return. Zarude and Hydreigon with a Choice Scarf will also OHKO Azelf, and even a less defensive Pokemon like Crawdaunt can give Azelf problems unless it runs coverage for it. bring up how these hate dazzling gleam. I'd also like a mention of umbreon here

**Faster threats and Priority Choice Scarf Users**: The aforementioned Zarude and Hydreigon can threaten Azelf with a Choice Scarf, as well as other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Diggersby, all of which can simply U-Turn on Azelf and deal significant damage in the process, or just outright KO Azelf with a strong attack. bring up how priority users like lycanroc-d, mamo, and azu can pick off a chipped azelf

**Special Walls**: Pokemon with high Special Defense like Chansey will withstand Azelf's attacks. Even though Azelf carries fire coverage, a Pokemon like Celesteela can shrug off Flamethrowers from a pivot Azelf and deal massive damage with Heavy Slam in return. While Azelf can Knock Off both of these Pokemon to hinder them, it often does so at the expense of taking significant damage, and even an itemless Chansey can continue to switch in on Azelf. this point can be reworded a fair bit for simplicity. I'd bring up slowking in here too and say something along the lines of "Pokemon with high Special Defense like Chansey, Celesteela, and Slowking can withstand Azelf's attacks and hinder it with chip damage, but the former two hate Knock Off and the latter two fear coverage options like Flamethrower and Energy Ball, respectively." Up to you how you word it but this is how I'd do it

- Flamethrower covers a wide range of stubborn defensive Pokemon like Aegislash, Skarmory and Tangrowth. is fire blast worth a mention at all? does get some dmg rolls eg. vs like tang.
- U-Turn is Azelf's key move here, as its high Speed stat allows it to pivot out of danger from Pokemon like Galarian Moltres and bring in a teammate.
- For the final moveslot, Knock Off is preferred as the better support move to remove items from common switch-ins like Chansey.
- Energy Ball can be moved as an alternative to Knock Off to better threaten Pokemon like Slowking, Swampert and Mamoswine.
- Dazzling Gleam is an option for better coverage against Pokemon like Hydreigon and Salamence, but bulky Dark-types like Mandibuzz and Galarian Moltres will easily withstand a hit and threaten Azelf in return. yea this should probably be worded to stress that it can 2hko pdef mandi attempting to swtich-in and stress how it shouldn't be fired point blank against full i guess. Both of these coverage moves work well in combination with an Expert Belt, while Knock Off is preferred on a Heavy Duty Boots set. I feel this line sorta gets repeated into next line, would try and merge these two points together, also stressing in particular imo that it doens't just work well but that ebelt should really 100% be run with the coverage moves.
- Heavy-Duty Boots can be used on any Azelf pivot set to avoid Stealth Rock chip throughout battle, but Expert Belt in combination with a third coverage move allows Azelf to hit a large portion of the tier extremely hard, giving it a good chance to OHKO Pokemon like Mamoswine with Energy Ball and Tangrowth with Flamethrower, as well as 2HKO Slowking with Energy Ball.

- Azelf is already a strong offensive presence, but a wallbreaker like Aegislash, Diggersby, Conkeldurr, or the aforementioned Mamoswine can work in conjunction with Azelf to dent the majority of the opponent's defensive backbone by overhwelming Chansey, Umbreon, and Mandibuzz, which otherwise stop Azelf. would probably bring up slowking over Umbreon here (and potentially reorder the list when doing so to make it make more sense) gives a more important thing for aegi to pressure considering it otherwise doesn't pressure much on this list, and Umbreon teams tend to have a slowking who is gonna bet he more natural azelf answer on those teams anyway since you don't want your umb getting knocked.
- A hazard setter like Nihilego for Stealth Rock or Skarmory and Roserade for Spikes puts more stress on the opposing team to withstand Azelf's continued attacks. something about overwhelming checks like Slowking wouldn't go amiss as a direct mention Excadrill's role compression allows to set hazards and remove them with Rapid Spin, enabling an Expert Belt Azelf to come in freely and break more easily through the enemy team.
- Azelf best works in combination with another pivot such as Zarude, as both Pokemon can support each other and bring in Azelf against Grass-types that stop Zarude, or Zarude in on Special walls like Slowking. Thundurus-T can also pivot while also beating Mandibuzz and Slowking, while Slowking can be used as a slower defensive pivot to bring in Azelf against Pokemon like Tangrowth.
These teammates also help against most Choice Scarf U-Turn users like Zarude and Jirachi that Azelf must switch away from in battle. zarude is kinda eh as a scarfer but the mention makes sense here i guess. i think just generally commenting on zarude for these is relevant in first place, azelf is a great offensive check to it but absolutely no switch-in.
- Primarina can handle many threats to Azelf, including Galarian Moltres and Mandibuzz, while Azelf can threaten Grass-types for Primarina. In addition to Primarina, Pokemon like Slowking and Salamence can make up for Azelf's shortcomings by defensively answering threats to it.

Paragraph 1
- Azelf can dismantle nearly the entire tier after one Nasty Plot, depending on what its coverage moves are.
- Psyshock can be used over Psychic to be able to OHKO Nihilego before a boost, as well as better threaten Chansey and Calm Mind Primarina.
- Psychic is stronger than Psyshock and will still easily KO Specially Defensive Pokemon like Nihilego and Tentacruel after one Nasty Plot boost, though Psyshock is preferred to not be completely walled by Chansey
- Fire Blast covers Grass-types like Tangrowth and Steel-types like Aegislash and Celesteela, OHKOing all after a Nasty Plot.
- For the last slot, what Azelf uses depends on what the rest of the team needs covered. Energy Ball is an option for Swampert and Slowking, think its important here to stress that without it Slowking really easily just pivots in -> teleports to scarfer / offensive check and your azelf does nothing. while Dazzling Gleam hits Dark- and Dragon-types like Hydreigon, Galarian Moltres, and Salamence. tbf offensive mence gets killed by a +2 psychic stab anyway, mention is fine although i'd maybe consider mentioning either mandi or umb in this list.
Unfortunately, this wears down Azelf fairly quickly and leaves it susceptible to priority attacks likes Accelerock from Lycanroc-D and Aqua Jet from Crawdaunt.

- This set fits best on Hyper Offense teams that can support Azelf.
- Stealth Rock or Spikes damage helps facilitate an Azelf sweep, and a setter like Excadrill can both set hazards and remove them. Scolipede can also act as a suicide Spikes lead.
- Azelf is naturally fast, but a Sticky Web setter like Ribombee allows Azelf to no longer fear Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Zarude and easily sweep most teams completely after a Nasty Plot boost. This also allows Azelf to attack Starmie and Zygarde-10% without risking a Speed tie.
- A strong physical sweeper like Gyarados and Swords Dance Aegislash can work as a secondary sweeper for teams that carry multiple stops to Azelf, such as Chansey. can potentially mention how these could give azelf set up opportunities: eg. by letting azelf set up on say a skarmory or pdef tangrowth that was used to check them.
Would note how azelf can weaken/remove checks to beam nihi (drop the meteor beam mention directly too) like chansey / slowking / jirachi.

Azelf can also run moves like Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick to round off coverage well. While this can be effective on some teams, another Choice Band user like Zygarde-10% offers more spammable coverage in Thousand Arrows.

- Choice Scarf can also be used to surprise other Choice Scarf users like Zarude and Jirachi as well as faster threats like Salazzle, it is very situational and will oftentimes not have much utility compared to other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi which can spam Iron Head and use Healing Wish in addition to pivoting. - Azelf can act as a Stealth Rock setter, but this should only be used if the team has no other viable options to set up rocks. While Azelf also gets Taunt to prevent Defog, the prevalence of Pokemon like Excadrill make lead Azelf less optimal.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Pokemon like Umbreon, Mandibuzz, and Galarian Moltres stop most iterations of Azelf and can easily threaten to KO it in return. Zarude and Hydreigon with a Choice Scarf will also OHKO Azelf, and even a less defensive Pokemon like Crawdaunt can give Azelf problems unless it runs Dazzling Gleam coverage for it. mention how these first 3 mons you bring up all hate taking knocks, crippling either their own ability to reliably check azelf due to taking rocks dmg or effecting their ability to reliably take on other pokemon like aegislash.

**Faster threats and Priority**: The aforementioned Zarude and Hydreigon can threaten Azelf with a Choice Scarf, as well as other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Diggersby, all of which can simply U-Turn on Azelf and deal significant damage in the process, or just outright KO Azelf with a strong attack. Priority users like Lycanroc-d, Mamoswine, and Azumarill can also pick off a chipped Azelf.

**Special Walls**: Pokemon with high Special Defense like Chansey, Celesteela, and Slowking can withstand Azelf's attacks and hinder it with chip damage, but the former two hate Knock Off and the latter two fear coverage options like Flamethrower and Energy Ball, respectively. Mention teleport on slowking too.

Be sure to remember that it's "U-turn" not" U-Turn" and super effective is not capitalized. I only corrected these once and the rest are in bold.
Also, some of these points are too wordy

[OVERVIEW]

Azelf is a premier offensive threat in the current UU metagame due to its elite Speed, high Special Attack, and access to a large movepool. Moves like U-Turn U-turn and Knock Off allow Azelf to function as a great pivot support option, crippling checks like Mandibuzz and Chansey, while coverage moves like Flamethrower, Energy Ball, and Dazzling Gleam allow it to threaten nearly many UU threats likes Celesteela, Slowking, and Hydreigon for Super Effective this is not capitalized damage. Nasty Plot allows Azelf to function as a dangerous wallbreaker that threatens specially defensive Pokemon like Chansey, Celesteela, and Assault Vest Tangrowth. Only Salazzle and the niche Noivern are naturally faster than Azelf, and its Speed tier allows it to outspeed and KO other speedy Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego. While Azelf is powerful, it's also frail. Most attacks from any decently strong Pokemon will significantly damage Azelf, meaning it has to either KO its opponent or U-Turn away to last. You can condense these two with "Though Azelf is powerful, it's frailty means that it either has to pivot out or look for KOs if it wants to last longterm." Common Choice Scarf users like Hydreigon and Jirachi Diggersby (ew) can KO or U-Turn out from Azelf, causing major damage while doing so. Azelf also takes considerable damage from priority attacks like Lycanroc-D's Accelerock or Scizor's Bullet Punch. Azelf's great coverage is also limited by its moveslots, as a pivot set will have to often choose between Knock Off for support, Energy Ball to threaten Hippowdon, Swampert and Primarina, or Dazzling Gleam to better handle Dark-types like Hydreigon and Mandibuzz. Other sets like Nasty Plot face the same conundrum, often choosing between Energy Ball and Dazzling Gleam for the same reasons. Thundurus-T gives Azelf stiff competition as both an offensive pivot and a Nasty Plot sweeper. While Azelf is faster and better equipped to handle threats like Nihilego, Thundurus-T's has better defensive typing, higher Special Attack, and access to Electric-type STAB which gives it a large advantage over otherwise stubborn problematic Pokemon in the tier like Mandibuzz and Slowking, all of which Azelf fails to significantly threaten even with Super Effective coverage.

move 3: U-Turn
move 4: Knock Off / Energy Ball / Dazzling Gleam
item: Heavy Duty Boots / Expert Belt
ability: Levitate
nature: Naive
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Psychic is Azelf's strongest and preferred STAB move, dealing big damage to the likes of Thundurus-T and Amoonguss, but Psyshock is an option to OHKO Nihilego and deal better damage to Tentacruel and Calm Mind boosters like Primarina and Keldeo. Flamethrower covers a wide range of stubborn defensive Pokemon like Scizor, Aegislash, Skarmory and Tangrowth. Fire Blast is an option to help finish off Celesteela and the aforementioned Tangrowth, but the difference in damage is often not worth the accuracy drop. U-Turn is Azelf's key move here, as its high Speed stat allows it to pivot out of danger from Pokemon like Mandibuzz and bring in a teammate. For the final moveslot, Knock Off is preferred as the better support move to remove items from common switch-ins like Chansey. Energy Ball can be moved as an alternative to Knock Off to better threaten Pokemon like Slowking, Hippowdon and Mamoswine. Dazzling Gleam is an option for better coverage against Pokemon like Hydreigon and Salamence, and damage bulky. Bulky Dark-types like Mandibuzz and Umbreon will still force Azelf out usually, but Azelf can use Dazzling Gleam on the switch to damage them. Both of these coverage moves work well in combination with an Expert Belt, while Knock Off is preferred on a Heavy Duty Boots set. this feels kind of awkward to mention here before u go over the items in general, and u already mentioned that belt is preferable with the additional coverage later on Heavy-Duty Boots can be used on any Azelf pivot set to avoid Stealth Rock chip throughout battle. Expert Belt should be used in combination with a third coverage move to allow give Azelf to hit a large portion of the tier extremely hard, giving it a good chance to OHKO Pokemon like Mamoswine with Energy Ball and Tangrowth with Flamethrower. (AP) , as well as 2HKO Slowking with Energy Ball. It also allows Azelf to 2HKO Pokemon such as Slowking with Energy Ball and Mandibuzz with Dazzling Gleam on the switch. you didn't add this from the last check so im incorporating it here Naive is the preferred nature, as the loss in Special Defense barely affects Azelf and the increase maintaining you don't really increase its damage since ur not using a boosting nature or anything chip damage from U-Turn and Knock Off can be more beneficial against Zarude. Timid is also an option if you drop Knock Off and are not concerned much with U-Turn chip damage. 4 Def EVs ensure Azelf lives a Thousand Arrows from Zygarde-10% from full health.

This set fits best on fast paced balance or offense teams where the pivot support can aid in getting other hard hitters like Mamoswine on the field. Azelf is already a strong offensive presence, but a wallbreaker like Aegislash, Diggersby, Conkeldurr, or the aforementioned Mamoswine can work in conjunction with Azelf to dent the majority of the opponent's defensive backbone by overhwelming Slowking, Chansey, and Mandibuzz, which otherwise stop Azelf. A hazard setter like Nihilego for Stealth Rock or Skarmory and Roserade for Spikes puts more stress on the opposing team to withstand Azelf's continued attacks. Both of these can also help pressure usual checks to Azelf like Mandibuzz and Slowking. Excadrill's role compression allows to set hazards and remove them with Rapid Spin, enabling an Expert Belt Azelf to come in freely and break more easily through the enemy team. Azelf best works in combination with another pivot such as Zarude, as both Pokemon can support each other and bring in Azelf against Grass-types that stop Zarude, or Zarude in on Special walls like Slowking. Thundurus-T can also pivot while also beating Mandibuzz and Slowking, while Slowking can be used as a slower defensive pivot to bring in Azelf against Pokemon like Tangrowth. A Knock Off absorber like Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu, or Amoonguss helps Azelf escape dangerous Pokemon like Krookodile, Crawdaunt, and Azumarill, and Azelf can also threaten Steel-types like Aegislash and Celesteela that normally would stop these same teammates. These teammates also help against most Choice Scarf U-Turn users like Zarude and Jirachi that Azelf must switch away from in battle. Primarina can handle many threats to Azelf, including Choice Scarf Hydreigon and Mandibuzz, while Azelf can threaten Grass-types for Primarina. In addition to Primarina, Pokemon like Slowking and Salamence can make up for Azelf's shortcomings by defensively answering threats to it.

[SET COMMENTS]

Azelf can dismantle nearly the entire tier after one Nasty Plot, depending on what its coverage moves are. Psyshock is usually preferred can be used over Psychic to be able to OHKO Nihilego and Tentacruel before a boost, as well as better threaten Chansey and Calm Mind Primarina. Psychic is stronger than Psyshock and will still easily KO Specially Defensive Pokemon like Nihilego and Tentacruel after one Nasty Plot boost, though Psyshock is preferred to not be completely walled by Chansey Fire Blast covers Grass-types like Tangrowth and Steel-types like Aegislash and Celesteela, OHKOing all after a Nasty Plot. this doesn't really go over why I would use psychic over psyshock if the additional power isnt necessary, either find some examples or cut this For the last slot, what Azelf uses depends on what the rest of the team needs covered. Energy Ball is an option for Swampert and Slowking, as Slowking can simply pivot in and teleport out at will to an offensive check without it. Dazzling Gleam hits Dark- and Dragon-types like Hydreigon, Mandibuzz, and Salamence. Expert Belt is the preferred item here, as it allows Azelf to fire off attacks without consequence while still dealing enough damage to OHKO defensive Pokemon like Celesteela after one Nasty Plot. Life Orb can be used for even more damage, in particular against Pokemon which Azelf lacks coverage movees for like Chansey and Hatterene. Unfortunately, this wears down Azelf fairly quickly and leaves it susceptible to priority attacks likes Bullet Punch from Scizor and Aqua Jet from Azumarill.

This set fits best on Hyper Offense also not supposed to be capitalized teams that can support Azelf. Stealth Rock or Spikes damage helps facilitate an Azelf sweep, and a setter like Excadrill can both set hazards and remove them. Scolipede can also act as a suicide Spikes lead. these two seem very easily condensible, especially since here it almost makes it seem like exca is a spikes setter. If you have trouble just fit that exca can also remove hazards in a different sentence Azelf is naturally fast, but a Sticky Web setter like Ribombee allows Azelf to no longer fear Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Zarude and easily sweep most teams completely after a Nasty Plot boost. This also allows Azelf to attack Starmie and Zygarde-10% without risking a Speed tie. A strong physical sweeper like Gyarados and Swords Dance Aegislash can work as a secondary sweeper for teams that carry multiple stops to Azelf, such as Chansey. Azelf can then set up Nasty Plot on most checks to these same Pokemon, like Tangrowth and Skarmory. A wallbreaker like Mamoswine can also break through many checks to Azelf, such as Mandibuzz and Chansey, to allow Azelf to more easily sweep. Thundurus-T can also help threaten Pokemon like Mandibuzz, as Azelf struggles to break through it even with Dazzling Gleam. Nihilego is also a good teammate as it can offer Stealth Rock support you're almost never fitting that set in on hyper offense cause Exca and even krook can do the job better or serve as a secondary sweeper with Meteor Beam and diversified coverage for the team, while Azelf can assist in removing or weakening Nihilego's checks like Slowking, Chansey, and Jirachi.

I implemented this check, but there were quite a few meta changes between the second and third checks so I am wondering if maybe a quick 4th check should be done before sending to GP. If not it's fine I will send it right away.

Psychic is Azelf's strongest and preferred STAB move, dealing big damage to the likes of Thundurus-T and Amoonguss, but Psyshock is an option to OHKO Nihilego and deal better damage to Tentacruel and Calm Mind boosters users like Primarina and Keldeo. Flamethrower covers a wide range of defensive Pokemon like Scizor, Skarmory, and Tangrowth. , while (remove period add comma) Fire Blast is an stronger option to help finish off Celesteela and the aforementioned Tangrowth, but the difference in damage is often not worth the accuracy drop. U-turn is Azelf's key move here on this set, as its high Speed allows it to pivot out of danger from Pokemon like Mandibuzz and bring in a teammate. For the final moveslot, Knock Off is preferred as the better the preferred support move to remove items from common switch-ins like Chansey and Mandibuzz. Energy Ball is an alternative to Knock Off to better threaten Pokemon like Slowking, Hippowdon, and Mamoswine. Dazzling Gleam is an option for better coverage against Pokemon like Hydreigon and Salamence and damage bulky Dark-types like Mandibuzz and Umbreon. Heavy-Duty Boots can be used on any Azelf pivot set to avoid Stealth Rock chip throughout battle. Expert Belt should be used in combination with a third coverage move to give Azelf a good chance to OHKO Pokemon like Mamoswine with Energy Ball and Tangrowth with Flamethrower, (AC) as well as 2HKO Slowking with Energy Ball and Mandibuzz with Dazzling Gleam on the switch. Naive is the preferred nature, as the loss in Special Defense barely affects Azelf and maintaining chip damage from U-turn and Knock Off can be more beneficial against Zarude overall. Timid is also an option if you drop Knock Off and are not concerned much with U-turn chip damage. 4 Def EVs ensure Azelf lives a Thousand Arrows from Zygarde-10% from full health.

This set fits best on fast paced balance and offense teams where the pivot support can aid in getting other hard hitters hitting Pokemon like Mamoswine on the field. Azelf is already a already has a strong offensive presence, but wallbreakers like Keldeo, Hydreigon, Conkeldurr, and the aforementioned Mamoswine can work in conjunction with Azelf to dent the majority of the opponent's defensive backbone by overhwelming Slowking, Chansey, and Mandibuzz, which all of which would otherwise stop Azelf. Stealth Rock setters like Nihilego and Spikes users like Skarmory puts more stress on the opposing team to withstand Azelf's continued attacks. , (remove period, add comma) while in addition, Nihilego also can can also pressure Mandibuzz and wear down Slowking. Excadrill's role compression allows to set hazards and remove them with Rapid Spin, enabling an Expert Belt Azelf to come in freely and break more easily through the enemy team more easily. Azelf best works in combination works best with another pivot such as Zarude, as both Pokemon can support each other and bring in Azelf against Grass-types that stop Zarude, or Zarude in on Special walls like Slowking by bringing in the other to threaten out Pokemon which would normally beat them, such as Grass-types for Zarude and special walls for Azelf. Thundurus-T can also pivot while also beating Mandibuzz and Slowking, while Slowking can be used as a slower defensive pivot to bring in Azelf against Pokemon like Tangrowth and Slowking perform in the same vain, as Thundurus-T threatens the Mandibuzz and Slowking which reguarly switch into Azelf, while Slowking acts as a slower defensive pivot that brings in Pokemon like Tangrowth for Azelf. A Knock Off absorber like Tangrowth and Amoonguss helps Azelf escape dangerous Pokemon like Thundurus-T, Scizor, and Azumarill, and Azelf can also threaten Steel-types like Skarmory and Celesteela that normally would stop these same teammates would normally cause trouble for those same teammates. These teammates also help against most Choice Scarf U-turn users like Zarude that Azelf must switch away from out of in battle. Primarina can handle many threats to Azelf, including Mandibuzz and Choice Scarf Hydreigon, while Azelf can threaten Grass-types for Primarina. In addition to Primarina, Pokemon like Slowking and Salamence can make up for Azelf's shortcomings by defensively answering threats to it.

[SET COMMENTS]

Azelf can dismantle nearly the entire tier after one Nasty Plot, (Remove Comma) depending on what its coverage moves are. Psyshock is usually preferred to be able to OHKO Nihilego and Tentacruel before a boost, as well as better threaten Chansey and Calm Mind Primarina. However, Psychic is an option to do more neutral damage to Pokemon like Salamence if Azelf is not running super effective coverage for it. Fire Blast covers Grass-types like Tangrowth and Steel-types like Celesteela, OHKOing all both after a Nasty Plot. For the last slot, what Azelf uses depends on what the rest of the team needs covered Azelf's last move is usually dependent on what the rest of the team needs. Energy Ball is an option for Swampert, Hippowdon, and Slowking, as otherwise Slowking can simply pivot in and teleport out at will to an offensive check without it switch into Azelf and safely bring in an offensive check with Teleport. Dazzling Gleam hits Dark- and Dragon-types like Hydreigon, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, and Salamence. Expert Belt is the preferred item here, as it allows Azelf to fire off attacks without consequence while still dealing enough damage to OHKO defensive Pokemon like Celesteela after one Nasty Plot. Life Orb can be used for even more damage, in particular against Pokemon which Azelf lacks coverage movees moves for like Chansey and Hatterene. Unfortunately, this wears down Azelf fairly quickly and leaves it susceptible to priority attacks likes like Bullet Punch from Scizor and Aqua Jet from Azumarill.

This set fits best on hyper offense teams that can support Azelf. A hazard setter like Scolipede helps facilitate an Azelf sweep, and a setter like Excadrill can both set hazards and remove them with hazard setters like Scolipede, who sets Spikes and Toxic Spikes (I think?), and Excadrill, who can also remove hazards. Azelf is naturally fast, but a Sticky Web setter like Ribombee allows Azelf to no longer fear Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Zarude and easily sweep most teams completely after a Nasty Plot boost Sticky Web setters like Ribombee are also helpful, as Sticky Webs allow Azelf to outspeed Choice Scarf users like Zarude and Jirachi, allowing it to sweep easier. This also allows Azelf to attack Starmie and Zygarde-10% without risking a Speed tie. A strong physical sweeper like Gyarados or Diggersby can work as a secondary sweeper for teams that carry multiple stops to Azelf, such as Chansey. Nihilego is also a good teammate as it can serve as a secondary sweeper with Meteor Beam and diversified coverage for the team, while Azelf can assist in removing or weakening Nihilego's checks like Slowking, Chansey, and Jirachi.

Other Options
=============

A Choice Band set takes advantage of Azelf's high Attack stat to act as an incredibly strong pivot with U-turn and Knock Off. Azelf can also run moves like Zen Headbutt, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Trick to round off coverage well. While this can be effective on some teams, another Choice Band user like Zygarde-10% offers more spammable coverage in Thousand Arrows. A Choice Scarf can also be used to surprise other Choice Scarf users like Zarude and Jirachi as well as faster threats like Crobat, but it is very situational and will oftentimes not have much utility compared to other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi which can spam Iron Head and use Healing Wish in addition to pivoting. Azelf is also naturally fast and usually not in need of a Choice Scarf. Azelf can act as a Stealth Rock setter, but this should only be used if the team has no other viable options to set up rocks setters. While Azelf also gets Taunt to prevent Defog, the prevalence of Pokemon like Excadrill make lead Azelf less optimal.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Pokemon like Umbreon and Mandibuzz stop most iterations of Azelf and can easily threaten to KO it in return, though having their item removed with Knock Off makes them much less effective in their defensive roles. Choice Scarf Zarude and Hydreigon outspeed and OHKO Azelf, and even a less defensive Pokemon like Crawdaunt can give Azelf problems unless it runs Dazzling Gleam coverage for it.

**Faster threats and Priority**: The aforementioned Choice Scarf Zarude and Hydreigon can threaten Azelf with a Choice Scarf, as well as other Choice Scarf users like Jirachi and Diggersby, all of which can simply U-turn on Azelf and deal significant damage in the process, or just outright KO Azelf with a strong attack. Noivern, Crobat, and Salazzle outspeed Azelf naturally and threaten heavy damage onto it. Priority users like Scizor, Mamoswine, and Azumarill can also pick off a chipped Azelf.

**Special Walls**: Pokemon with high Special Defense like Chansey, Celesteela, Hippowdon, and Slowking can withstand Azelf's attacks and hinder it with chip damage, and Chansey and Slowing Slowking can often Teleport to an offensive check. However, the former two hate Knock Off and the latter three fear coverage options like Flamethrower and Energy Ball, respectively.

(optional)
